    Jon- you did Dingwall a huge service by explaining all the benefits and features of a Dingwall. So many folks are just stuck on the multiscale, and the funky looking frets. Glad you were open minded. Ive been playing Dingwals since 2000, and haven't looked back, and sold of my parallel fret basses, because the B & E string just sound so much clearer. Awesome review.

      You been playing Dingwall since 2000?😮 I didn’t even know about dingwall till about 4 years ago, I got a Black NG3 5 and absolutely love it!

    Very thorough demonstration. I would add that although the pickups look like soap bars, each one has two split coils staggered like a P pickup but in reverse, with the treble coil closer to the neck and the bass coil closer to the bridge.

    Hey Jonathon, I liked your Review and indeed Sheldon Dingwall has great design and engineering incorporated into each and every Bass. I can attest that the 5 String Dingwall Combustion N2 Bass I own with a 37 Inch B String, really does the 5 String low range justice. Dingwall Bass String lengths are based off Baby Grand Piano or Upright Piano Sound Board String lengths, if you did not know that Jonathon. Sheldon is Brilliant to have come up with his unique Multiscale design.

    I can't think of a better analogy for the benefits of scale length differences in the lower strings than having a grand piano on set too! Perfect! Love the review Jonathan! @dingwallguitars 👍

    Perfect video
    Excellent explanation of the whole design, nice to explain how it can be really good even beeing made in China (with Canadian material actually and the new custom bridge and tuners now).
    The NEVE preamp has made its debut on the Dingwall custom shop too and the Fast Lane prototype. I think you just missed the frets that are Banjo frets actually.
    Also, pickups are wired in either serie or parallel together which make the big tonal difference you get, but also in serie or parallel individually (because those custom pickups are split coil)

    The best thing about pick-up blend control is that you can fine tune the sound you want. Rather than just pick-up on, pick-up off. It's also a shame that the middle pick-up is not able to be used on its own.

    • @francoishtzl157
      @francoishtzl157 Місяць тому

      It's is no a shame, you can order a custom selector and get any combinations you want. A blend doesn't sound as good and don't offer as much different tone

    *Multi-scale for a 5.*
    *Sure...*
    *...but for a 4 string?*

      The multiscale design is great for both 4 and 5 string basses!

    These are over $3000. For made in China. It's hard to even care about the bass itself because the economic problems that this signifies are so concerning.

    • @xmanual
      @xmanual Місяць тому

      I understand how that looks on the surface however world economics are extremely complex. New York City used to be a center of guitar manufacturing until rent and labor got too expensive. Then Chicago became a center for guitar manufacturing until rent and labor got too expensive. Then Japan became a center of guitar manufacturing etc, etc. It sucks, I know but last I checked, New York and Chicago were doing fine.

      *1) Of the hundreds of 4 strings I've played...*
      *...not once did I say "The E needs more tension."*
      *2) If I pay $3k for something made in China, it better have a heli-pad and a stocked bar.*
      *3) You'd think someone would make an accompanying pedal instead of throwing all those on-board tone adjustments on a bass.*
      *Try messing around with those on a dimly lit stage.*
      *4) The people who buy these will be wealthy, massive JT fans and will only get it as a collector's item.*
      *It'll be a case queen.*

    2k+ for a Chinese made bass is really a no go. Regardless of how good they are…

    • @mrpositronia
      @mrpositronia 2 місяці тому +2

      Really? If the build quality and materials are second to none, you'd still only want to give the expert team a pittance. The Neve pre-amp is worth a few hundred on its own.

      @@davesolo5984 c'mon.... "Snarkily typed on his 1000 dollar phone"....? Some people go for different price points. This is outside of his. In any event, the cost of phones are subsidized by your contract. You pay off the phone over a two year period, not a good comparison.

      Dingwall is a Canadian manufacturer, but a similarly spec'd model made in their Canadian shop would be about $4200.
