A bike can still be dropped using the waddle method. All it takes is one small puddle or slippery spot to step on and down it goes. Unfortunately, a lesson learned that resulted in a cracked fairing on my mint Repsol CBR1000RR.
Drop bike on side, drag with rusty chain in any direction. Now that your bike has scratches and damage you can get over the anxiety of moving it about and you feel freedom and happiness as you get a good work-out. 🧠
As a small girl with a relatively heavy bike. I always put the kickstand down, walk around the bike and tilt it a little towards me on the other side. The Kickstand is high up in the air and doesn't bother me while moving the bike. If it tilts towards me I can catch it early enough. In the unfortunate event, it falls to the other side my kickstand saves my bike from falling over. Since I do it like that I never had it fall over. 6 Years and counting :)
btw, "Method #2" is part of license exam in europe - you need to maneuver the bike into a perpendicular "parking spot". If you drop the bike - exam's failed

Hey same here, until I discovered that if my feet were on the bars I could use both hands to stop the fall on the ground if I twisted the waist and hit the ground with my hands clasped together 🤗🤘
For us shorter folks, it’s easier with method 2 to grab both bars and lean the bike against your hip slightly. Or grab part of the frame or similar towards the back of the bike. Just laying your hand on the seat doesn’t give you a lot of leverage if it starts to fall.

You should use your foot to apply pressure forward on the kickstand when doing the “kickstand turn”. This way it helps insure that your kickstand doesn’t fold in while pivoting.
We spent about 1 to 2 hours just moving the bike around like this at the MSF class. Mainly using the kickstand down "technique". Instructor told us to pick a different bike every so often during that particular class to get used to different weight so that we'd have an idea on how to handle diffrent kinds of bikes. I've never dropped my 390 Duke and can move it around the garage with ease and confidence.
Or girls can just do it themselves and thank you, but "I'm good." I'm kidding, but seriously I get bothered by common courtesy. Why? Cause it's kinda bullshit. It promotes gender stereotypes and while getting the door for anyone is nice, I like the idea of people being able to take care of themselves. Maybe instead of getting the door for "a lady" ahem. The kickstand turn just blew my newbro learner mind! I'm already using all the other techniques, In fact they are the first thing taught before jumping on a bike at the MSF here in Australia. Time to give that kickstand turn a try!
I love and have been using the kickstand pivot method for 20 years. Before trying this, inspect your connecting point for the kick stand. Some are just not strong enough. I've personally had it go bad, and I've seen it go bad. It's never been the kick stand that failed, its always been at the mounting point. I've seen cracked engine block bosses, bent/broken mounts, even a twisted frame tube. Again, I use this technique but it comes with vigilance and judgement.
Another useful maneuver is dragging the rear tire around. Holding the bike while standing next to it, lock the handlebar and grab the tail section of the seat. Lean the bike toward yourself pretty far and you can drag the back end, pivoting on the front tire. Works well on loose or smooth surfaces but does take some muscle.
kickstand pivot, I think, that will be more easy to catch the right side of handlebar. You have more room for your body to be closer the bike this way, providing more control
I also use the method of standing in front of the bike facing backwards and holding the handlebars. Really helpful when there isn't much space either side.
I would recommend a motorcycle dolly just in case any of these methods do not work for you. I bought one from harbor freight (for the US market) for $100. These range between $100 - $500 depending on your budget. One of the the best motorcycle accessories in my garage.
I'm a shorter/smaller rider and have a 450 or so pound Versys 650, aka Yam's favorite motorcycle, and find that it's better to stand and hold from the right side of the bike with the kick stand down. That way I have the front brake in hand, can catch the bike if it tips toward me, and don't have to worry as much about it falling away from me since the kickstand will catch it as well. PS: Why can't New Yorkers like myself participate in the giveaway?
I have narrow space in my garage cuz I keep bike in between my car and the wall, so I stand in front of bike, facing it, with front wheel in between my legs and tow it back outside of the garage, works great when there's no space to either side of the bike. Doing this broke the kickstand on my first bike - a 2014 KTM rc390 ... I've done it on my xsr900 twice since and it's been fine, but there is always that lingering worry that it'll break again
Yeah, it's a foolish way to turn a bike. I was specifically taught on my lessons not to do this. Stands are designed to hold a portion of the bike weight when leaning, but also on its wheels, they are not designed to take the full bike weight.
Don't do the kickstand turn with aluminum side stands, they will break eventually. I've had both my MV Agusta Brutale and KTM Super Duke GT aluminum kickstands break after about 20 kickstand turns.
As for the kick stand pivot, I do it on my 2010 Multistrada 1200S, but it isn't recommended if the kickstand is atttached DIRECTLY to the engine cases. You run the risk of cracking the engine case
It works but do it enough times and it will snap your side stand. Also if it catches a crack on ground it’s sitting on. I only do it in the garage where it’s smooth.
What can I do to win a bike Im a local fan here In El Salvador I got a ninja 650 that need a allot of work and parts lol would love to win one of those awesome bikes love your Videos bro
Hey Yammi, there's another way too... stand in front, kick stand up or down, face the bike grab both handles, from over the top and balance upright, then walk it along, backwards. Good for tight spaces. 👍
When pushing next to the bike I like always having a tiny amount of pressure on the front brake. Pull the lever just enough that it would light the brake light if the bike were on but doesn't prevent you from moving it. I don't know why, but I find it easier to go from a little brake to a little more brake than going from no brake to a little brake. And grabbing too much front brake while not on the bike is highly likely to end up with the bike on the ground.

You need a license to ride tho lol but in most states you don't have to take a class. I took the class and it was literally the easiest thing, got 0 points added in the test. The class does however make it it obvious that someone people should be no where near a bike, people dropping their bike 3 plus times in a day, and even crashing during the slightest faster turn. Overall the class In America is basically useless other then finding out if you're one of those people that should never go near a bike.

I move my bikes opposite the kickstand with the kickstand down leaning it toward me. With my method all you have to do is push it to the kickstand. I have more strength in my legs to prevent the bike from falling toward me then to prevent it from falling away from me. Plus you are on the side of the front break if It wants roll away from you.
Standing in front of the bike and using the bars to guide it's direction is the best method for tight spaces. I have to fish my bike between two vehicles often and reversing the bike using the handle bars is the safest way IMO.
Good video Yams, we literally have to do the standing and holding method that you demonstrated as part of our Mod 1 test in the UK. We have to maneuverer the bike using this method from one "parking bay" to another. I am surprised that it isn't in the American motor bike licence test.
Yep...over here if you can get on a 125cc motorcycle, start it, ride it a little and stop it without dropping it you can get your license and buy a Busa all in the same afternoon. It's crazy, but American freedom for better or for worse.
One easy way to put your bike in a tight space without you being on the side or on top of it is to walk it backwards holding it up from the handlebars from the front of the bike. This is best suited for backing your bike into a space with the kickstand already down (as you're walking backwards, the kickstand may scrape but won't come up)
A friend used to do Kickstand turns on his KTM SM990 - The welds at the kickstand hinge bracket slowly weakened then cracked causing the bike to fall over onto others nxt to it, while parked one fine day I guess that method works best when the surface friction is not too high, i.e. mb on loose sand (which brings abt other problems/issues) 😅
My dad did the kickstand turn with my 220kg Kawasaki Versys 650. This was the first time I saw it. Was very impressed and baffled what he did. Needed to turn the bike around on my own a few days later in our tight garage. Couldn't even lift it on the kickstand 😂 I'll be playing yammies vid in slow motion and try again.
I always use a different method, dont know if it is necessary the absolute safest... but I haven't gotten into trouble with it so far. Thanks Yam. This video totally saved me a thirty point turn in my too tiny backyard. That last sidestand trick will be heavily abused going forward,
The advance method is really helpful, my dad uses it every time.
Yup! I dont know why more people don't do this. A little sketchy on my Bonneville T120 cause the center of gravity is so low, but still...
I stopped doing the kickstand turn as some riders that also have a Duke 390 mentioned they had broke it. Aparently there's a bolt that holds the kickstand that's prone to breaking after múltiple attempts
Liking the death grips hoodie
Cool video. Thank you for this knowledge. I hope everyone is doing well down there.
Awesome video Yammie ❤️

Hello Yammie Noob, 2 weeks ago I got a 2015 W800 in Mint Condition, not ridden it yet as the weather where I am has been bad/good/bad etc. As I haven't ridden any Bike in over a decade and am small, moving it around to start with was scary as fuck. If/when I drop this stunning Bike I am going to cry like a Baby.
Thanks for the tips, will stick with Option 2 thank you.
Thanks for what you do, need all the Tips I can get at the moment & yes I did re-buy a Twist of the Wrist, I need all the of The Knowledge I can get at the moment :)
Ive done the kickstand pivot in a parking spot when two roadkings parked behind my ninja 650. I didnt want to risk scatching the chrome of two hefty leather daddies.
Also did it on accident while using the kickstand for popping the bead during a tire change.
Thanks buddy it's really helpful.
I can pivot my r3 with one hand(righthand) Just stand near your left headlight and hold the right handle bar and start pulling while walking backwards
I didn't know this was a trick. I grew up on dirt bikes and we always used the kick stand for turning a bike around
I used to do that last trick while lubing my chain. I’d pull the bike back on the kickstand while turning the rear wheel with my right hand.
Hold the 2 handles, Kick Stand Off. ALWAYS Lean the bike against your hip, it will never go anywhere.
Just imagine this kickstand turn technique with hayabusa..OMG😱😱😱
I can’t wait to try the kick stand turn with my Harley heritage classic.
Yammer would be a death grips fan
Aaww papa yam. This was very helpful thank you!
