    A plug in hybrid doesn’t really need fast charging capability because it can operate as a hybrid for distance driving. And will only be used as an EV locally where it will be plugged in overnight.

    Definitely an interesting development. The 50 miles of electric only range would easily cover most commutes, while still allowing extra range for emergencies or vacations. All without the hassle of having to go rent something else as some would suggest doing. I hope to see more content on this one as it becomes available.

      Agree. It's just a tough sell to convince people this approach is all they need, when it's the long EV range and fast charging that gets all the attention in pure EVs.
      The added weight of big batteries (that you carry around all the time) detracts from the overall efficiency of the vehicle.
      I'd like to go full EV (e.g., Kia EV6), but $50K?? Hopefully the MX-30 R-EV is priced right to be bottom-line competitive.

    My first reaction to this was that it is a crazy idea. But when you think about it a bit more it actually makes a great deal of sense. The rotary engine can be very small and light and generate a lot of power for its size. And it will be very, very smooth and silky quiet. Yes, it will still be much less efficient than a traditional gas engine, and yes the engine seals will still eventually wear out and grenade the engine down the line. But for a vehicle that is a city car 90% of the time and rarely runs the engine at all, neither of those downsides much matter. You are getting all of the major benefits of a gas electric hybrid without nearly as much weight penalty, particularly if you leave that large gas tank 1/4 full unless you are going on a road trip. It is basically the idea of the Volt, but with a gas engine design significantly better suited for that backup purpose. It wouldn't surprise me if the internal combustion components in this setup weigh about half of what they did in the Volt. Unlike the first MX-30, this is potentially a very interesting offering.

    • @worldtrav72
      @worldtrav72 Рік тому +3

      IMO, unless there was a packaging constraint, they should have used more battery and a smaller gas tank to target 275 miles range. 50 miles EV range is not much…I’m living with 60 miles on i3 and routinely have to run the Rex on the way back from the airport 25 miles away when at typical highway speeds and temps 75-85F. Suspect these will sell poorly, but in future years those who pick them up cheap will be able to battery swap for 150 miles of range from next gen battery tech. Once they depreciate to be under the IRS cap for used cars, they could be a fabulous buy. One option is to lease where contracted resale is high, then buy it at end of lease at actual value.

    • @trustbuster23
      @trustbuster23 Рік тому +1

      @@worldtrav72 Yes, I would have swapped some gas range for a bit more EV range, but I suspect that $$$ constraints were more the issue. When you add more battery the cost goes up a lot. I've lived with a Volt and its 40 odd miles of range for a while now, and I agree with you that particularly in cold weather and when the batteries get some age/cycles on them, you want a bit more even for a city car.

      The rotary is more efficient in power/weight. The rotary is a part time engine, so will last. It is lighter so less weight for the batteries to pull. It is the annual cost of fuel that counts.

    Super smart use of the rotary, because as a generator, it can be tuned for max efficiency and low emissions at one particular rpm to charge the battery pack. I would guess that a direct injection 800cc rotary could easily make more than 75 HP.

    Honestly, I was very interested in the pure electric mx30 when it first came out, but I decided against it not because of the range -- my Mini SE also only had about 100 miles range -- I was disappointed by the MX-30's abysmal efficiency and capabilities.
    It had a 35.5kWh battery, but still only gets about 100 miles range? Mini had a roughly 32.5kWh battery (about 28.5kWh user accessible), it was able to get 110miles or so range.
    Then there was the charging speed. while it advertised the same 50kW peak charging speed as Mini, but it typically charges at about 32-36kW, where as the Mini typically charges at 45-48kW. The Mazda significantly slower.
    I'm not really comparing the MX-30 with the SE per-se , but merely what other manufacturers can do -- go further and charge faster -- with similar battery size or less.
    So I was very disappointed at MX-30's capabilities -- it just feel like Mazda could have done better.

      When running a generator, output power is the whole aim of the setup. Torque doesn't really factor into the game except as far as keeping revs to a sensible level. After generating losses are deducted, what power is left of the original amount translates directly to what energy in is going into the battery. More 'HP' means more output charge.

      @dimitriosfotopoulos3689 Рік тому

      Agreed. It's a little known fact that the proper way of measuring a rotary's displacement is to measure all three chambers of each rotor, all three of which are producing power. Mazda has been lying about this for decades, and measuring just one chamber on each rotor. Which explains why an RX8 1.3L only gets 20 MPG on a good day. It's not really 1.3L, more like 3.9L. The real genius of the Wankel is that they packaged the equivalent of a 6 cylinder engine into a much smaller & lighter package, but opened themselves up to other issues like seals wearing out.

    • @robertrobinson3861

      Only one rotor 'face' fires on each revolution of the main shaft. The rotor is obviously revolving at only one third the speed of the output shaft. Therefore, in a twin rotor engine, there are two firing per revolution. For example, a Mazda 12A (600cc per chamber - 1200cc total) engine is comparable to a 1200cc two-stroke in terms of displaced capacity per revolution.

    The horsepower of the rotary is of no concern as the wheels won't see any of it. The rotary is only going to charge the battery while spinning at around a constant 2000-2200 rpm. Mazda has stated that this setup will enable the car to reach mileage estimates of 1L/100km. The car will also feature a charging mode which will keep the rotary engine running to recharge the battery while idle/parked.

    The BMW i3 range extender output is 34 hp and it simply doesn’t have enough output to stay above 70 mph over long distances & hold the charge. Thinking 75 hp for rotary in a much heavier vehicle like MX-30 will be similar. Will watch for top sustained speed without losing charge, but guessing this isn’t the road-tripper I was hoping it would be. 😢

    i mean a regular person driving 40-60 miles a day, if you have a 300-ish miles battery car, you need to charge it not that often...
    but with a small battery like this which is "constantly" charged up by the "small" petrol based rotary motor, the battery will loos range compared to the "big boy's" fast...

I love EVs and I'll never buy another oz of gas because my car and my yard equipment are all electric. I had a Volt which I brought in 2016. It was a great introduction to EVs because it had many of the benefits of an EV and at the time the Supercharger network was inadequate. But the Volt had the downsides of an ICEV, it needs regular service and it was much less reliable than the Tesla I replaced it with. It was also frustrating because 53 miles of range wasn't enough. It was so much better as an EV than an ICEV, I dreaded hearing the noise from the engine so I did every hypermileing trick to extend the battery range. With a Tesla I don't have to pick back roads instead of highways because I have enough range. And I can go everywhere I could go in the Volt because the Supercharger network is 100% reliable and there are chargers everywhere.

I can't afford to wait hours to be able to keep driving. I also want better efficiency so I don't have to pay so much for gas. The best option would be a plug-in hybrid, but the battery range is so low, it doesn't justify the cost over a traditional hybrid. Going to an EV with a generator is the next best option. You get the range of the battery for fuel efficiency and the range of an oil powered car for extended mileage. It's literally the best of both worlds.
      It's great that you like your Tesla, but I have not heard good things about them. They are a status symbol, like the Prius was when it first came out. There are better options out there and everyone is going to have a different opinion; think of iPhone v. all of Android.
