    Just go with the standard range if you only drive 40-100 miles per day your good. I take road trips to Orange County which is 100miles from home and it’s more than enough range. You can charge to 100% as much as you like and you will still have less battery degradation. Also you can have a better Conscience driving lfp battery because they don’t contain cobalt which is mined from democratic of Congo and the mining process makes people sick in those areas.

    I got the LFP RWD model Y, and enjoy it. Although I wouldn't mind extra acceleration and range, I like charging to 100%. The LFP also have more charging cycles on it (lasts longer) and if ever was to buy a used Tesla, I would feel safe buying a LFP where I would know that the former owner hadn't overcharged it on a regular basis, thereby degrading the battery, like they could on a Nikkel battery.

      a few things you should know about LFPs:
      1. All lithium ion batteries, including LFPs, degrades faster at high SOC (state of charge; aka, range) and high C-rates (charge/discharge).
      2. LFP has much lower energy density and is heavier.
      3. LFP lasts much longer in stationary energy storage systems with low-C and low-SOC (eg, Tesla's PowerWall), but ages poorly in EVs with high C and high SOC -- which is why LFP is strictly limited to entry-level, low-range EVs.
      4. Cleanwatt, citing Tessie's tracking data, reports that Tesla LFPs lose first 10% of battery capacity twice as fast as non-LFP models, ie - to 90% SOH. Recurrent, a EV rental company, has similar data supporting this finding -- ie, LFP"s faster degradation.
      5. Tesla recommends charging to 100% full because BMS needs to be recalibrated frequently to be able to estimate accurate range and avoid cell imbalance issue. Other EV OEMs, such as Ford, recommends 90%.
      6. we don't know a lot about Tesla's LFP real world long-term lifespan under Tesla's recommendation. It would probably outlast the 8-year warranty, which is also same for non-LFP models, but not nearly as long as most Tesla drivers would like to believe.

    Great review Robert. My wife bought the M3 LR and I dig the car so much that I just bought a Tesla for myself as well. I was debating between the LR and RWD, and your video really helped me make the decision to go with the RWD trim. The $11K price difference kind of factored into the equation as well. Keep up the great work.

    LFP for a wonderful second vehicle for those in normal to warm climates with a home charger and another ICE vehicle for long trips. No brainer. Don’t need 4.2 seconds 0-60, 5.8 gets me around most people, and 15-50 is lightning fast for when I need it. Stereo is great but wish they just would have hooked up all the speakers in the car.

    Simple answer is - of course LFP! I charge my LFP to 100%, 20.000 miles so far , battery is not degraded at all. still showing 271 miles. They will be switching all models to LFP in future.

    Nice job on the review. For us living in the snowbelt with 4-5 months a year of sketchy weather/driving conditions, rear wheel drive is a deal breaker. So LR/Performance is the only one we can practically use.

    I have a 2019 SR+ Love the playfulness of RWD and lighter front. Can’t get over the slower heavier standard car for 2022. I hardly need extra range but I’m going for Long Range because of the speed, audio system and possibly resale value as LR seems to have the most orders right now where I live.

      I think the resale value should be much better for LFP, they last a lot longer, so they shouldn't lose too much value.

    I test drove them, the performance is the best if you’re coming from a sports car…even the 2k power boost it doesnt work the same way. The acceleration is still better with the performance

    I've searched for days on end and I can't find a better video on the LFP vs. Long Range than yours. Really incredible stuff and keep up the good quality work... As for me, I've been torn and keep going back and forth between the LFP and the LR. I did NOT want to get the LR because the extra $10K is a lot on an already steep price for a purchase. However, in the end, I ultimately did go with the LR because I found the LFP too slow (at least for the new '22 models). It's really disappointing how Tesla sacrificed the performance on the Standard model in '22 from previous years. Had they kept the same performance with the 0-60 times, I would've gone with the LFP but it's gotten too slow and added weight doesn't help so went with the Long Range at the end of the day.

      How is 0.4s "too slow"? Are you driving it on a circuit everyday or what? Why would you even need 0.4s extra speed? It makes 0 sense to pay 10k for this, sorry

    80% or 50% for maximum battery life v/s 100% every day (every time you can charge) - think about it.

    Only doing 8k miles a year the Model SR+ LFP is a no brainer for me. I live in the UK. From the north coast of Scotland to the south coast of England is 1000 miles. Great car, I collected mine last week.

    I've had a LR AWD, switched to a LR RWD. LR is really what you want if you take your car on holidays. LR AWD is faster and has more stability over the LR RWD. LR AWD is more fun to drive. However, LR RWD hits the perfect sweet spot for me. More than enough range, cheaper, fast enough.

    Just made the decision to go with the 2022 RWD over the LR. Mass. folks get a 2500 rebate for EVs under 50K so that increases the spread between SR and LR to 11.5K!

      @Srikar R It's done by state. I live in Massachusetts. It mght be different depending on where you are. Tesla is offering 7500 credit for December delivery though!

    In New Zealand I think they've even stopped selling the Long Range AWD because the subsidy limit (NZ $80k) is between the RWD (NZ $74K ) and the Long Range (~$90k), so the price difference ended up being about $25k! (after the subsidy) (that's about US$15k) and if you're going to shell out 25k extra you're probably going to add 35k for the Performance. I went for the RWD because there are better things to spend $35k on than 3 seconds of acceleration.

    LFP can withstand more charging cycles than the previous pack, but they do degrade by charging them to 100% faster than if they were charged to 80%.. To be clear, the LFP cells don't 'like' being charged to 100%. The reason why Tesla says to charge them to 100% is so the BMS can better judge the remaining battery range/capacity in use, due to the much flatter voltage decrease over the energy cycle of the battery. If you don't charge to 100%, the BMS can get a bit lost as to what percentage the battery is at.
    To be fair though, it can withstand that many more charging cycles that you may as well charge it right up anyway!

      yeah for the average person keeping at 100 seems like a good idea as tesla calls out in their recommendations. not exactly optimal, but easiest for most people most of the time

    I’ve been reading LFP owners who drove very extensively over the past year (50k miles or above) had very little degradation. It boosts my confidence to buy one used. I’m planning to get a used 2022 LFP RWD next year hopefully under 25k to qualify for the $4000 tax credit. My wife got the new 2023 RWD it comes with the LFP and CCS compatibility. I have a dealership nearby that has a free 50kW CCS charger. Only drawback is that I can’t get the battery to precondition for charging elsewhere unless I’m navigating to a Tesla Supercharger.

    I think the slower degredation of LFP is a real plus. But I would only choose LFP in a warm climate.

    yea you can upgrade the sound system in the standard RWD my guy u can get everything that the long rang have except the speed but everything else is upgradeable

    I have a M3RWD on order, due in late July to mid August, and originally considered the M3LR, but for me, I couldn't justify an extra $6K (then) on range I'd need MAYBE 1% of the time, extra off the line speeds that eat range anyway, and fog lights/sound system upgrades I can do aftermarket at a much higher quality for far less than $1K total, combined. That, and charging to 100% all the time and not having to worry about battery health/longevity so much made it a no-brainer for me.

    Great video! As a Tesla Employee, I would also like to know that the rear wheel drive version doesn’t come with floor mats and the warranty is 100,000 miles a year versus a long range is 120,000 miles a year. Another difference would be that the rear wheel drive version doesn’t have the option to do acceleration boost through the operates, and it doesn’t have the fog lights that the long range model three has. Right now I’m contemplating getting a model three since I do Uber and enjoyed your video. You got some really great points.❤

    Round trip I do 84 miles a day four days a week. Waiting on my LFP 3. I intend on driving this car 20k miles a year for 20 years. I’m definitely putting it to the test. If FSD was in a better place I’d probably buy it.

      The RWD will exceed the range of the Long Range after 2 or 3 years...due to NCA degradation in the LR model.

    Excellent and clear presentation, and wise to emphasis the choice differs on preferences. We need to tow therefore I think the extra traction, stability, power and range of the LR will help. Also, I'll probably buy used and then the price difference seems less.

    Do yourself a favor if you live in a place that gets snow buy a LR. The range and reassurance you get from having that extra battery in case of a highway shutdown or some emergency you can't move is worth it.

    Thanks. I am in NZ and received my M3 LFP about a month ago and couldn't be happier (especially given the slow family cars we have in last few years!). For us we can get a NZ$8,625 (USD $5,832) rebate on the RWD M3, but not the LR so in affect it makes the LR NZ$23,125 (USD$15,636) more expensive sadly. So most of the M3s around here are RWD (although there a few Performance models around too). Fortunately the RWD is a great car already, as you have pointed out.

      I’m also from NZ and I ordered a standard model 3 in April, I’m expecting its arrival in August. I’m so excited. While the government rebate has reduced to $7500NZD, I’m still lucky to have ordered my Tesla 4 days before Tesla raises the standard model 3 price for another $4000 NZD

    The better value is the long range without question because it has all wheel drive and while having much better performance it still has better range. If you ever need even more range just drive it to a standard’s limits and the range difference will be even greater. At least you have that option with the LR. With the standard you cant beat the long range performance, or range for that matter, no matter what. The long range is also a better value than the performance that does have better performance but less range, but only slightly better performance than a long range with acceleration boost upgrade.. another option the long range has the others don’t. Also Tesla recommends 90% daily charge for 3 long range and performance. Not sure why so many think it’s 80%.

      at certain temperatures at 90% the stress in battery is higher than 80 although still fine for most drivers

      I’m buying the SR 3. We have a MY3 LR and we’re absolutely shocked by how fast and how badly the battery has degraded! Being able to charge to only 80% negates the supposed “extra range”. Charging to 100% with the LFP is the equivalent range what our Y is getting at 80% (!).

      @@dwh75 I thought about this too. I have a -22 M3LR and like you say, I do only charge to 80% or 90%, and never use the extra range.
      Now I want to buy a MY and is considering a MY RWD since it also has battery that I can charge to 100% on a daily basis.
      What range do you get in your LR charging to 90% and what range does the SR+ give in 100%?

      They changed them to just standard now which makes sense the plus didn't really change anything when there is no nonplus car available. It's still the same car just a name change from sr+ to m3 rwd

    Totally agree, both brilliant. I went for the RWD+ as for me 7k wasn’t worth it for 1.6 secs of faster acceleration to 60mph and a sub woofer. I do wish though that you could pay for a sub as an optional extra. There are 3rd party people out there that do it but I’m nervous about ripping the car apart!

    I have a 2019 Honda Insight that's a hybrid.. it's zippy but only 152HP. A M3SR would be a major upgrade with almost 300HP. my car is 0-60 in like 9 seconds lol. i'm just afraid I'd regret it and want the M3LR

    I had Tesla model 3 LR 2021 but sold it because of too much panel gaps and ordered 2022 SR , I charge daily to 100% no worry about degrading of battery. And it is a lot efficiency than LR.

    Anyone that lives in a country with a rough winter should buy AWD if they can. Also the extra performance and range adds too much value to pass. And if you don't have a home charger you obviously can't buy the LFP. And also if you go on a lot of long trips where you have to use superchargers you also shouldn't get the LFP. I'd only consider the LFP RWD if I had a home charger, didn't live in a winter country and didn't have the budget for the long range or the performance model.

    I dont't own a Tesla... yet. I will saying having bought my first EV, a Bolt 2 years ago that upgraded sound systems are a much bigger deal in an EV. The lack of noise really makes the audio experience center stage when driving.

    After having a few cars without the upgraded sound system the I went long range. But then noticed the range wasn’t that much different between the LR with 19” wheels and the performance so, that’s what I did 😅

    Performance if you value actually stopping your car 💀. The duel LR stops like a Toyota Camry. The Brembos on the performance make it much more of a “sports sedan.” 99 feet 60-0.

    I just got the 2022 LFP 60 kw car and reviewed it on my channel. It is awesome IMO. I’ve found cold weather performance to be excellent- maybe because of the heat pump in now? Anyway it’s better than it was on my Model S.

    After driving a Tesla for a week and thinking the range was quite good. I then filled the tank in my cx5 and remembered that most gas cars have 400 plus mile range per tank, and it can be filled in a few minutes lol. The fuel tank also never gets smaller with temperature, or does it mater how full one fills the tank.

      true though you're missing a lot of other benefits I think overcome that
      1. if you add up how long you spend at a gas station (including driving there) vs waking up with enough charge each day... you'd spend less time over course of a year not going to gas stations
      2. cost of gas bs electricity
      3. idling with ev vs idling with gas car
      4. preconditioning the cabin
      5. safety
      6. driving experience vs Mazda w the torque
      7. seat comfort
      8. security monitoring
      9. dog mode
      10. used value
      11. included autopilot
      12. sound system

      @@RobertSchmitt The biggest thing that turns me off about EV's is being told you have to buy one, or else. EV's will not save the world so, what is the real reason?
      Also, after sitting at a supercharger station for 1hr I realize EV's won't work unless you have a home charger, or a charger at your place of employment.
      It was an interesting experience but, I'll save my 10-20000 and not go EV... until the government makes me anyway. or, perhaps ill go Mad max in the future, roaming the wastes for fuel.
      but, very good information none the less.

      @jtkrpm1 agreed on your points that evs will not save the world and I do not recommend one without a home charger.
      I will same driving experience all around for me is really nice.
      at the end of the day whatever vehicle that best fits your lifestyle and budget will be most important regardless of fuel type. many evs are very poor and overpriced still today

    The LR will only get you further faster on a road trip on the 1st leg. Both cars will add 100 miles of range at a supercharger at about the same time.

      that bring said LR will get more miles overall bc of overall max capacity i.e. 15 min at 15% SOC for both will add a lot more for LR

      So if the trip takes more than the charge you leave with and you can''t stop to recharge. The LR won't save you more than a handful of mins over a 300+ mile trip.

    Thank you for the Video. I am about to buy a model 3 and I am trying to make a sound decision regarding a long or standard range. I don't understand the big deal regarding the speakers and subwoofer. Can't you just go to a car stereo place and have new speakers and a subwoofer put in? I am watching UA-cam videos on the subject all day regarding speaker replacement.
    Down side is, I have noticed technicians taking out all the seats and panels to do so. I don't know if that's necessary or not and it seems that it could get expensive. However, I don't know if replacing your 6 speakers with Alpines or JBL's (I'm sure what Tesla uses) would cost an arm and a leg. Especially since a lot of places have now seen many Teslas come in and out.

      it's a benefit for sure but shouldn't be main buying decision imo.
      I like it for AWD because it's a nice drive to flagstaff snow each winter.
      also the range helps me get to San diego on one charge.
      I get faster home charging and supercharging speeds
      i also really like the acceleration
      not everyone may require or need those differences

    Comparing the ranges it doesn’t worth to buy the LR. You’ll never gonna charge the batter at 100%, basically you’ll be getting the same range as the RWD (Base model). So why do we still call it Long Range model?

      the 80 to 90% is a big deal you're right. many will charge to 90% which is about 320 miles.
      we don't know what the new price will be for 2023 model when it comes back..... for now for used market have to decide.... what is this worth?
      - MUCH faster performance and acceleration with dual motor (this is a bigger deal than range for some)
      - about 50 more mile daily range and power
      - cold weather performance (if applicable)
      - subwoofer ' Amp and more speakers
      - ambient lighting
      - faster home and supercharging rates
      - AWD
      - option for acceleration boost ( 3.7 sec 0 to 60)

    Maybe I missed it but you didn’t mention how the LFP is a much slower 0-60 speeds versus the LR. That’s a big deal for a lot of buyers who are considering between the two. I believe it’s like 5.8 vs 4.2 seconds plus LR gets an option for acceleration boost. Also AWD vs RWD is underrated. Power to all 4 wheels is a big difference.

      I’d disagree on 4WD, I had a S dual motor and think the RWD 3 is a better drivers car as it is lighter at the front. Yes the acceleration is faster but I came from a fast S and you eventually stop launching all the time as it’s pretty pointless and eats battery. The RWD LFP has plenty enough oomph for most.

    I’m trying to decide between getting the 2023 Model 3 SR with Enh. Autopilot or a used 2020 Model Y LR. So torn. I want the Model Y more, but at the same time, I know I’d be happy with the model 3. Like I want the storage space of the Y but at the same time, I wanna save some money, lol. Wish they’d just lower the prices again so I can actually just get what I want and not go broke.

      what you're saying comes down to storage, slightly more comfort for guest seating, better sound vs overall better driving experience day to day with EAP if you commute. m Y will drop more in value as Giga Austin ramps up. highest selling car also means used market will flood more over the next year as 4680 cells get better. you'll experience similar range too.
      You may also qualify for tax credit next year with new. 2023 should also have much superior build quality vs the 2020 Y
      imo I'd go with that.

If I were to purchase a new M3 Perf. and swap out the 20' Uberturbines and 235/35/20 tires with 19' OEM rims (I like the version 1 from 2018-2020) with stock 235/40/19 tires, would my range improve and be close to the 315 range reported on the M3 Long Range? (I really hate the heavy and attention seeking 20' ubertuberbines )

    It’s a $12k USD price difference
    I average 150-200 miles a day driving.
    About one day out of every week I do about 250-300 miles in a day
    Should I go for the LFP and save money or go for the AWD for better overall experience?
    I value practicality over performance by a small margin.
    I plan to keep the car for a minimum of 5 years and trying to figure out what would be the better decision?
    I’m leaning towards the LR AWD… and my justification is it’s only $7 more per day for 5 years lol
    Given you have both trim levels, what would be best in my position? Thanks in advance!

      hey there! not an easy decision for sure.
      you have a lot of miles to drive however either battery will suffice.
      that being said it may seem the LFP rwd is a better option simply because the battery cycle life is 750k+ miles.
      you're averaging most 50k miles a year and 250k miles over 5 years may see the battery degrade faster.
      thay being said AWD isn't for sale until an unknown time next year.
      of you need the car now then lfp is no choice. you can also upgrade the sound as needed later.
      LFP I would say edges out as of today.
      your one day of 300 miles will require charging for sure at your destination

    Was surprised about the lower home charging speed of the RWD vs LR. As far as i know the Model 3 can charge with up to 11 kW at home, in the standard three phase configuration that any normal home has (well, at least here in germany). Is there really a difference in the USA?
    On second thought, probably i shouldn't be surprised, after all european Model 3 have a CCS port as well, not the standard Tesla non-standard port.

The Tesla wall connector's charging chart for europe states 7,4 kW on 230V (standard home voltage in europe) at 32 A, or 11 kW on three phase connections (16A, 120 degrees between phases means 400V, each phase at 230 V). The Model S and X actually achieve up to 16.6 kW, but only with the dual charger. I know there are some difference, but at least in germany normal homes are connected to three phases 230V per phase, up to 60A per phase.

After my research it turns out the reason tesla limits the RWD is because their inverter that converts AC energy to DC energy for level 2 chargers is cheaper and can only convert 32A.       I have not seen any studies published on this data. given LFP has higher cycle life, I would not be surprised if LFP was a better route for frequent supercharging.
      That being said, since LFP wants to be at 100% SOC, you may find yourself at a supercharger longer to get it to 100% vs NCA stopping at 80-90%
      I generally would not recommend getting an EV in an apartment with winter temps that low if you don't have access to any outlet.
      I took a trip that got to low teens overnight and even when plugged into a wall, the "defrost" mode took 9% of the battery while plugged into a standard outlet on my Long Range.

      if by longer battery life, you mean the lifecycle in total of the battery. it can last 3-4x as many charge and discharge cycles. i mention this later in the video. this is essentially a million mile battery

      @@max4557 that will depend on what kind of battery it using. I thought that Tesla used LFP batteries in one it’s models.
