I'm absolutely a hip hop person in all it's sub genres that exist but don't exist, but in HS I defiantly messed around with Deamons and Wizards, Blind Guardian, and Iced Earth. I also jumped over to some prog metal with of course Dream Theater, I really loved dream theater. Fun to see you guys switch over, Lost in Vegas does hip hop from time to time too. That tempo change in this song is pretty sick, very Iced Earth.

You guys are dope. I love hearing different prospectives on music. You guys should do a song and video review for “on and on” by Sheheim. He was the youngest person affiliated with Wutang , I think he was like 14 at the time.
Also, can you recommend other bands similar to Pantera, and more specifically the cowboys from Hell album. Much appreciated!

      Slig
      Sorry for the lenght.
There are quite about 12(kinda) main genres of Metal. If I would divide them, based on their "heaviness" I would go like this:
      - Non-Extreme Metal(Power,Symphonic, Heavy, Neo-Classical, Progressive, Folk, Alternative)
      - Low-Extreme Metal(Gothic, Thrash, Doom(Again, there are many sub-genres which can be really heavy and others that are not)
      - Top-Extreme Metal(Death,Black, but there are many sub-genres or bands of these, which may not be that heavy as would normally be expected, like it is with Viking Metal,Atmospheric Black Metal which fall under Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal or Progressive Death Metal which are not that Extreme, depends…).
      mapofmetal.com/ - very useful thing.
www.music-map.com/ - best for finding new bands
Traditional Heavy Metal are bands like Iron Maiden,Black Sabbath,DIO,Led Zeppelin,Judas Priest and more...Basically old legends of Metal, that popularized and also started(Black Sabbath) the genre. The term Traditional is more labelled to bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple and such, where for Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and such, it is more NWOBHM - New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which was the movement in the late 70s combining some Punk speed with Heavy Metal.
Lyrics tend to be about society problems, also fantasy, mythology, personal problems...

Power Metal is very uplifting, mostly fast, consisting of high-note clean vocals and guitar solos. But this is not always the case. Metal Ballads are very calm and slow.Bands mostly sing about Fantasy,Sci-fi,history,mythology,heroes,battles etc.Bands mostly take inspiration from authors like Tolkien(Blind Guardian has even made the whole album,Nightfall in Middle Earth about his book Silmarillion).Or they create their own epic stories.Power Metal is very melodic and quite often it uses the symphonic sound (Symphonic Power Metal especially). It is very nerdy and over the top,but that makes it so great :D It is pure fun.
      Bands like Twilight Force,Stratovarius,Helloween,Rhapsody,GloryHammer,HammerFall,Blind Guardian,Sabaton,Powerwolf,Wisdom,Manowar,Dark Moor,Bloodbound...

Symphonic is type of Metal influenced by Classical music and Gothic Rock and also Power Metal. It may use instruments that are common in Classical like violins for example. But it also very much relies on keyboards. It mostly uses female Opera vocals(Soprano). Lyrical themes may also be Fantasy, mythology or even poems and opera plays, like Phantom of the Opera. Bands like Kamelot,Xandria,Nightwish,Epica,Therion...

Neo-Classical Metal. Not totally a genre, mostly it is combined with other genres of Metal,so it is not like the legit genre really...But this Metal basically combines the European Classical music with Metal.Bands like Dark Moor,Rhapsody,Symphony X,Yngwie Malmsteen...

Folk Metal.Basically it is influenced by Folk music and Folklore and such, uses the instruments that are common in Folk music... and many times is singed in the native language of the bands, mostly some European Nordic language like Finnish. Bands like Korpiklaani,Eluivetie,Arkona,Týr..

Progressive Metal which tends to be more complex in terms of sound and the musical structure. It is influenced by Classical music, I believe also by Jazz(some bands),but I think here it is more seen in the musical structure than sound, unlike in some Progressive Rock and it tends to combine other styles of music with itself. The playing is complex, mostly has many sudden changing melodies and such many times thoughout a song, the songs can range from 5+ minutes to even 40+ minutes it has more broad styles of singing tones etc..But vocals are mostly "clean".The lyrics are very diverse - mythology(Symphony X),horrors and dark stuff in a more poetic way(Opeth),Sci-fi story-telling(Ayreon) and more. It is kinda hard to define really...each band does more things, really...Bands like Symphony X,Opeth(Start with their later work),Ayreon,Tool,Dream Theater,Animals as Leaders...

Alternative Metal - It is the Metal of 90s pretty much...Mainstream one at that. Came from Alternative Rock and mostly combines other genres of music with Metal, that mostly are not associated with it,like rap, funk for example. Nu-Metal is one of its sub-genres,which mostly does this, but it combines more Extreme Metal and Hardcore Punk with it. Well...basically bands like Korn,Disturbed,Slipknot,System of a Down, early Linkin Park...

Thrash Metal like Metallica,Megadeth,Anthrax,Annihilator,Testament and Slayer(one of the more extreme Thrash Metal bands). Thrash of course is mostly aggressive and fast. Lyrics are mostly about social issues and such. It was influenced by Punk and came from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Speed Metal(not that long term genre,Thrash later took its place along with Power). Thrash is a good way of getting into more Extreme Metal. It is a gateway basically. Start with Metallica,Megadeth.

More Extreme Metal featuring Growling and Shrieking(quite all of it is melodic tho).
Few tips for vocals....you need to be open-minded about the vocals. The best way of getting into the vocals is to view them as a form of an instrument. That "screaming" is called Growling for Death and Shrieking for Black.
Growling and Shrieking it self is not screaming really. It is very demanding and unlike in screaming, they do not rely on their throat that much, therefore,if done right, the damage to the throat is minimal to non-existant and that is why they can do it so long.
It is all just about the time spent listening to it and about understanding of it. If done right, it can add a lot on the atmosphere.
Gothic Metal, which is kinda a bit like Symphonic, but it combines more Extreme Metal like Doom or Death and it uses the Beauty and the Beast style of singing, which was first used by Theatre of Tragedy, where there is mostly female opera singing and then there is the male growling. Also the lyrical themes and the melody mostly tend to be darker. But that may not always be the case.
Bands like Theatre of Tragedy,Within Temptation,Epica,Tristania,After Forever...

Viking Metal or perhaps you could call it Blackened Folk Metal(I have not seen this to be very much used, sometimes it is just that Viking Metal is not a good name for this).
It is taken as a Black Metal subgenre, but it is like chaotic Folk Metal with Black Metal vocals and instruments, mostly Black Metal guitar riffs, sometimes more Viking themes, sometimes more Pro-Pagan and such. Some say Viking Metal is not a genre, because it can be Black,Folk, maybe Death and genres should never be made upon lyrics and such, which with my perception of Viking Metal is not the case...However it is hard to define this stuff in depth, cause there are many bands doing totally different kinds of Metal that could be considered as Viking. Bathory was the first Viking Metal band(when they released their 5th album, which is considered to be the first Viking Metal album) and one of the first Black Metal bands and it had no characteristics of what I have said here about Viking Metal. This is just the very simple explanation of Viking Metal and also what I personally perceive as Viking Metal, cause someone says that it is not really a sub-genre,someone says it is...if someone tells you that Viking Metal is not a genre, he is slightly right.
But there is Wintersun, Ensiferum,Manegarm,Heidevolk, Equilibrium,Skálmöld,Finntroll...

      /watch?v=fyvPe0uqjjY
Progressive Death Metal. Ofc. It is Progressive Metal and Death Metal. Bands like Opeth,Gojira, Ne Obliviscaris,Jinjer(Also Metalcore and Djent and such, but they are really good). Opeth is the best for start here, because of how they mix growling with clean singing and same goes for melodies.
      /watch?v=acNqbZkEwEQ
      /watch?v=aMorAdnCixg
      /watch?v=_-XaaTqOICU
      /watch?v=SQNtGoM3FVU
Melodic Death Metal can be similar to Power Metal when it comes to melody and song structure, however it obviously uses growling and more “brutal” themes and is not that clear.
      Bands like Amon Amarth,Arch Enemy,Children of Bodom,Kalmah...
      /watch?v=ARnBgW5XgSo
      /watch?v=lk2-bgwA0Ro
      /watch?v=NpSR8MWHs_k
      /watch?v=RcxlexAJycY
Doom Metal is actually the only original genre of Metal I have not yet explored. Yeah...Black Sabbath and its debut album Black Sabbath had the first Doom Metal template and it also was the first Metal album. The first song Black Sabbath took the inspiration from Gustav Holst - Planets - Mars,Bringer of War,so Metal was from its beginning heavily influenced by Classical music. Doom Metal tends to be slow,gloomy,dark,horror-like,sad perhaps sometimes when it comes to melody...But there are many sub-genres of it,where this totally may not be the case...But there...you could also check Candlemass, Paradise Lost...

Atmospheric Black Metal. I think the name kinda speaks for it self. It tends to invoke Atmospheric feeling. Many works are just solo projects.

Woah haha. This is a lot to digest! I was gonna reply to you yesterday but I wanted to check out some metal I already have in my playlist first. Might as well throw it out there now. I know I enjoyed Black Sabbath's first album, as well as Iron Maidens...and I like Motorhead quite a lot. Also I dunno if you'd exactly call it metal but I enjoy Rammstein a great deal. I've listened to tonnes of Avenged Sevenfold at the request of a friend, but I never really liked any of it unfortunately.
But yeah, thanks a lot for this! No need to apologise for the length, I appreciate the detail a lot. I'll get through this all and throw a reply out there with my thoughts when I'm done. :D

    • @mordraug
      @mordraug 6 років тому +1

Glad to help. Indeed all those bands are Metal. Rammstein are Industrial Metal which is a sub-genre of Alternative and combines Industrial music with it. Avenged Sevenfold are Metalcore, aka modern kind of Metal, one of the most mainstream Metal genres out there nowadays I would say, especially in America, even tho it technically is not Metal as it stands for Metallic Hardcore which is more that Hardcore Punk than Metal, but that depends on the band, Avenged Sevenfold are more Metal,but...there are some good bands too,but I do not listen to that much. In my opinion it hardly gives the impression of what Metal is capable of,but for some more mainstream fans, it is maybe a good way to go for...
Best is to then probably check some best albums of the bands you like. You started very well with Metal. Those classics are great to start with.
Shame that majority of other people mostly encounter with the most Extreme Metal and then immediately hate and dump whole genre because of that. I am obviously talking about how is Metal viewed in the general public, even tho that most Extreme Metal is not to be taken seriously. But this also kinda protects Metal.
Which is a shame as Metal is one of the most rewarding and then enjoyable genres of music ever, as it speaks to your soul in a totally different way...

Blackened Folk Metal. It is like chaotic Folk Metal with Black Metal vocals, sometimes Growls and instruments, mostly Black Metal guitar riffs, sometimes more Viking themes, sometimes more Pro-Pagan and such. I used to call it Viking Metal, but some say Viking Metal is not a genre, because it can be Black,Folk, maybe Death and genres should never be made upon lyrics and such, which with my perception of Viking Metal is not the case...It is hard to define this stuff in depth, cause there are many bands doing totally different kinds of Metal that could be considered as Viking. Bathory was the first Viking Metal band(when they released their 5th album, which is considered to be the first Viking Metal album) and one of the first Black Metal bands.
But there is Wintersun, Ensiferum,Manegarm,Heidevolk, Equilibrium,Skálmöld,Finntroll...

The point is to pretty much follow the melody and see the changes in it, it just takes time in the beginning, after few songs, you might get it, not to mention the audio was not of the best quality.

Syed Ayaan I believe I can give you my Metal guide, perhaps that might help..

      /watch?v=Ou5ZZR7WcrQ
      /watch?v=7hzyRxDiwo8

Of course, if you are looking for some Canadian content, you could always react to Maestro Fresh Wes's "Let your backbone slide". He too was heavily influenced by Big Daddy Kane, but in terms of Canadian Hip Hop, that is the tune to go with.

Have you ever listened to Italian Power Metal band Rhapsody? Its like fantasy metal where they sing about goblins, dragons and orcs. Listen to Emerald Sword or Unholy Warcry. Christopher Lee narrates their albums.

    • @mordraug

Andy Vickery I bet they did, when they have talked about the singer, they mentioned Rhapsody and Fabio.

We do like Rhapsody, as we mentioned in the video. Christopher Lee only narrated their later albums, but it's still super-cool!

if you're suggesting any R.A. track it has to be Uncommon Valor or Every Record Label Sucks Dick

Why are people always requesting tracks that they're clearly not ready for. They're still novices to rap. Let them build up to it.

Besides if any R.A track should be reacted to, it should be Still Get Through The Day.

Please do Cannibal Ox, song - Pigeon, album - The Cold Vein.
It's beautiful slightly abstract rap that doesn't conform to what you have listened to yet. It is somewhat of an underground classic.

Hey, cool videos you have there! :)
I was wondering if you could listen to some hip-hop legends again, like for example Krayzie Bone - We ain't really living or 2Pac - Do for love.
They are a bit more serious songs but not as dark as the suicidal one from Biggie. Now I have long stopped listening to hip-hop but those two have a lot of songs that make me come back and listen to like every blood moon or so.

i liked this reaction, and i'm not a big fan of power metal. i love the instrumentals, but i can't get into the vocals when it comes to power metal. i would love to see you guys do more metal, though. i would like to hear you be more critical, i think it's interesting to hear about what you two (as long time metalheads) are listening for and what grabs you as well as what you dislike. also think maybe a little more critique or breakdown of the lyrics would be good to hear.
just my two cents. was a great video regardless. look forward to more in the future.

It would be awesome if you guys would react to something by Rittz. He has excellent flow and raps much faster that the rap you have been listening to so far. Crown Royal is a great song. White Rapper, Fuck Swag, For Real, Switch Lanes, Turning Up the Bottle and Ghost Story would all be good options too.
