The human and robotic enemies made me think this was like a cyberpunk/Blake Stone inspired thing for a while. When you mentioned Quake II I was like, "Whoa, that came outta nowhere. I like Q2 so that's cool, it's Quake2Doom." :) -Mad Wolf
the non-hostile NPCs in this mod remind me of the Informants in Blake Stone Aliens of Gold/Planet Strike: they usually give you hints and either weapon charge packs (ammo for your other weapons), vending machine tokens, or both
How can you not like the strogg? The entire drive of this cyborg zombie species is to wage war and turn its enemies into one of them or grind foes into paste used to fuel troops, weapons, and machines
Thanks for giving me so many mods to try on Doom and Doom 2. I even took Doomseeker and made an ultra server using almost every single mod you've ever reviewed positively in a brutal co-op survival mode. Lots of people loved it, and I'm thinking about making another one when I get my new gaming laptop. 2nd channel I subbed to back in 2017.
At first this mod wasn't really on my radar, now marathoning Icarus's videos 5 years later, the idea of a Quake 2 prequel with massive inspiration from SiN is now something I am _VERY_ interested in!
I mean, that's a really good choice, considering that SiN was ALSO a sci-fi dystopia about shady genetic experiments. I wish the game was more popular among the retro FPS scene, it really is an overlooked gem.
The problem with Sin is that the appearance of the game doesn't fully portrait how good it feels playing it. After much time delaying it I finally played the game and yeah what an awesome terrific game. One of the few games that doesn't make me turn off the music. Dialog is awful and the story don't even waste your time on it, but gameplay more than makes up for that.
Just so you know, that sort of droning Tension building music is actually from System Shock 2. It's the theme for i want to say either Recreation or the Shuttlebay area. Or at least it sounds VERY similar to it, but i am mostly sure that i am correct and that it IS System Shock 2 music. So it might've been made back when System Shock 2 was still considered "Vapor Ware"
Oh fuck, that Recreational Deck gives me the creeps everytime, but the worst must be Hydroponics, there's no place to hide and lots of respawns. What a great game, such a shame that it makes me have anxiety attacks out of sheer tension, therefore I cannot play it casually like other games.
now THIS is fucking impressive. Truly a unique idea to bring to gzdoom. Sure it borrows alot of resources but it all ties together very consistently. I'm loving the charming 'civilian' npcs. Gives me alot of perfect dark 64 and red faction vibes
Watching this again after having watched the Shrine and Shrine 2 videos, I realize that the Bloodgun/Railgun/thing in those two mods is pretty much an organic version of the Railgun in this mod.
I loved Quake ll as well, I actually just picked up quake 4 for the 360 a couple days ago so I could play the HD remake of quake 2. It's freaking awesome. Brings me back to playing quake 2 back in middle school...ahh good times.
+Guillaume Perez Turok on playstation trash?oh yes why not! i agree.....cause Turok DH, Turok 2, RageWars, and turok 3 exist only for N64 and PC, even wiki say that....you (and Kyros D?) are so wrong (or babytroll?) there 's only turok evolution on 2003(not a good game, bugs and bad production), fifth and last iteration from Acclaim, for ps2, but no same developers nor same producer(the senior ones, left around turok3, and become firstparty dev RetroStudios for Nintendo).
Gotta give those GeneTech technicians or scientists some salty props though; although they don't have any weapons and have chance to run away, they still charge at the armed-to-the-teeth player character without second thoughts as to pledge their bond to Stroggs.
I mean... conspiring with aliens to take over Earth is probably an extremely clear-cut and literal case of 'crimes against humanity'. I imagine the moment that the truth comes out, they all get executed. They know that the moment you get to the truth, they're all dead.
The one question I have at the end of all this is if this mod is worth playing if you've never played Quake II, as it sounds like a lot of the enjoyment comes from nostalgia being reimagined or something like that.
One mod that I think deserves a Doom Mod Madness episode is one that just came out a few days ago called Interstellar Enforcer. However, it's only a demo right now and the full version might not come out for a long while. But I think it looks pretty damn impressive so far. Here's the link: www.moddb.com/mods/interstellar-enforcer/downloads/ie-demo-1
I don't think subdued has to equal bad, or mean something negative. Just because it's a mod for doom doesn't mean it has to play with the same high octane, super fast paced gameplay of doom.
I believe GZDoom still uses the same base original idTech1 engine, it's not technically Quake 2's engine, it's just been modified to accept models from other engines as well.
As far as I have been able to understand it, GZDoom has become something of a FRANKENSTEIN-Id-tech, yes? With snippets of code, and programming-solutions, and tricks, from every ID-game that's been made Open Source, yes? So, yeah, it's IDtech1, but it's got code from Quake1-2-and ESPECIALLY, 3. H*ll, I believe there's some code from BUILD these days, even... So, saying it's IDtech1, isn't quite correct - models weren't even a thing back in IDtech1 - that entire, BIG chunk of the code, is straight out of one of the other IDtech iterations.
Wow, pretty impressive... looks fun, even. BUT... I really must ask myself... WHY? Why make a 3d-model mod for the original Doom...? And a 3d-mod that's a prequel to QUAKE2?! I mean... Quake 2 is right there - fully open source and with a few enhanced source-ports as well - why wouldn't you make this for Q2 instead? Isn't the chance of the right people seeing and playing the mod, the big fans that will enjoy it the most, bigger if you MAKE it for Q2? I just don't get it... Don't we all play Doom-mods to experience Doom-style graphics and stuff? Or from that era? I'm probably also the only one btw, but it's almost a bit odd seeing the Quake2 stuff pared with the GEOMETRY-STYLE of Doom - that sort of blocky, SQUARE dominance of how things look - I've played so much Q2, that I feel as if the geometry is different... and there's a small disconnect, a curiousness to it. Overall though, I'd say it's a small thing, most people probably won't notice or care about that.
Yeah, probably the time saved when using such easy tool as Doom map editors allows for including 3D models on it in less time it would take to do the same in native 3D engines. But I imagine it must use much more CPU power for the simplest of things?
Doesn't mention Sin in the review? It's quite a hidden gem, I get it. The problem with Sin is that the appearance of the game doesn't fully portrait how good it feels playing it. After much time delaying it I finally played the game and yeah what an awesome terrific game. One of the few games that doesn't make me turn off the music. Dialog is awful and the story don't even waste your time on it, but gameplay more than makes up for it.
I know the textures are from their original counterparts but they could've pushed them to the point how they looked in original form. My eyes are mostly on the Q2s weapons. They seem to be extracted from... the software renderer. :D
... Uh, no, that's not how it works. These are the REAL textures, how they really look under the hood. They get nice and soft once you turn texture filtering on, which blends the texture pixels. Icarus didn't play it with filtering, because almost no one plays Doom with texture filtering on. The reason it looks weird is that Q2 textures aren't really designed to be viewed without filtering - while Doom and Quake 1 textures look good/better without filtering (which is why Icarus and many others play Doom without filtering). That's probably the reason why it feels weird to you, these textures weren't really designed to be seen like that. If you ask me, the BEST solution would be not to give them high-res textures, but to give them NEW low-res textures more in style of Quake 1 that are designed to look good even without filtering. Currently, they look like a pixelated photo. Also, Icarus might have not mentioned that issue because as he says in the video, he first experienced Q2 on Playstation. To my understanding, PSX didn't have texture filtering, so for Icarus, this looks normal - while you probably experienced Q2 on PC in hardware accelerated mode, WITH texture filtering.
Q2 was the first PC game I played and it looked nice on VooDoo :D. So yeah, it all makes sense now that you clarified it. I did play and enjoy Q2 on PSX too but for PSX it's normal to look like that and it didnt bother me at all when I played it so you understand its a bit weird for me to see this running pixelated on PC. All I wish is that this mod had more playtime. Man do I miss those times when games used to be much more fun... Thank you shinobody.
I am working on a gzdoom megawad that Will use the resources contained in genetech but with Some Changes. I got permission from enjay the author to do this. More information Will be given when the project is further along
Devoured Eagle, I've been thinking the very same thing for a long time. I've never quite understood why Q1 is so praised and Q2 so often overlooked. For me, Q1 feels like a mishmash of aesthetics environments and enemy designs, everything is ugly brown and green colored, and there's not a single proper boss fight to be found. And there's this certain feel in the game that can't help but find annoying somehow. Can't really pin it down exactly what it is, though.
MosoKaiser Exacty! The action is high and pumping, but you find it's moments like when you find the fellow marines in cages agonizing, it had a proper story, weapons are cooler and I liked the scifi setting more than the lovecraftian setting
Please do mod called project horror from zdoom forums it's a cool horror experience it can be played with any level/map pack as far as I know here's the link: forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=49640
Quake: go through time, space, Hell, and elder realms to stop an eldritch being from conquering everything.
Quake 2: ALieNS

2:21 RIP Gordon Freeman :(
he got caught in the crossfire rip
he got caught as not being the main character rip
+þøħ€
Was "crossfire" intentional?
The only thing that's missing are the little swarms of flies that buzz around dead enemies like in Q2.
As it is set on Mars, maybe there is no insects there.
"You can only go so far with hordes of enemies."
Every Custom Map: Hold my Super Shotgun.

the non-hostile NPCs in this mod remind me of the Informants in Blake Stone Aliens of Gold/Planet Strike: they usually give you hints and either weapon charge packs (ammo for your other weapons), vending machine tokens, or both
Nice usage of SiN weapons and models.
the pistol and the heavy machine gun (the later which is mistaken for the Necrovision MG40 for some reason)
How can you not like the strogg? The entire drive of this cyborg zombie species is to wage war and turn its enemies into one of them or grind foes into paste used to fuel troops, weapons, and machines
Yeah, what's not to like?
It’s overplayed.
Thanks for giving me so many mods to try on Doom and Doom 2. That droning background music from System Shock 2... I think I also spotted a security bot from that game. What a time to be alive...
Yeah, I'm trying to find which track it is.
At first this mod wasn't really on my radar, now marathoning Icarus's videos 5 years later, the idea of a Quake 2 prequel with massive inspiration from SiN is now something I am _VERY_ interested in!
Thanks very much for reviewing my mod and for your kind comments. It's much appreciated. :)
It actually looks prety badass. Also 10/10 for the Quake 2 soundtrack
I hope you know most of these models come from SiN.
I mean, that's a really good choice, considering that SiN was ALSO a sci-fi dystopia about shady genetic experiments. I wish the game was more popular among the retro FPS scene, it really is an overlooked gem.
What models then? All the weapons except the pistol come from quake, as do the strog enemies
Hazzmati - Uh, the pistol, the heavy machinegun, and the regular human enemies/NPCs?
thanks
The problem with Sin is that the appearance of the game doesn't fully portrait how good it feels playing it. Is the starting pistol from SIN?
Yep.

Some of the NPC screams are from Red Faction, surprisingly, since both games are set on Mars.
FINALLY!!!!! THANK YOU MR ICARUS!!!! IVE WAITED SO LONG WOR THIS MOD TO BE COVERED!!!! I LOVE YOU 💞💞💞💞💞💗💗💗
now THIS is fucking impressive. Truly a unique idea to bring to gzdoom. Sure it borrows alot of resources but it all ties together very consistently. I'm loving the charming 'civilian' npcs. Gives me alot of perfect dark 64 and red faction vibes
when can we get a total conversion of doom 2 where every texture is fireblu?
holy shit I love the wobbly Q2 weapon models
To anyone curious, the ambient track is Recreational Deck theme from System Shock 2.
The weirdest thing about this is...
I wish Turok 2 had this feel to it. I have no idea why.
umbaupause i mean turok had some great level design such as the intro jungle level
+ Kyros Droztamyr ...that's no fun at all; i cant imagine why you think such silly nonsense..
@@TeslaDeCastaka It WAS trash. Played it back in the day on PSX, made me never want to play another episode in the series ever again.

@@TeslaDeCastaka Oh well, I guess it was on N64, then...
Although it looks indeed a bit slow, I still would like to try this. Looks great.

Ohh is that SiN Weapons !?!?
And also some Quake 2 wepons.
1:24 and here we see a stolen shotgun asset from quake 2...except that it got slightly altered...
I'm getting a Blakestone vibe here, which is good.. Gotta play this mod :-)
And the 3D models are better as well
gene-tech; building a better you
Doom: 2D sprites
Mod makers: Did you mean 3D
Pistol in the beginning has a similiar animations to quake 2's blaster.
oh its a quake 2 sequel i didnt realize until he said.
Impressive mod with some 3D models and gimmicks. Enjay is still the best.👍
Love that the NPC models are taken from SiN.
I don't think subdued has to equal bad, or mean something negative. Just because it's a mod for doom doesn't mean it has to play with the same high octane, super fast paced gameplay of doom.
So far it sounds like Half-Life: Opposing force except you're killing scientists while also still being in the right
Lol
This makes sense considering GZDoom uses the Q2 engine

GZDoom uses idTech1 the same way CoD still uses idTech3 or CS:GO uses a reverse engineerd, modified Quake 1 engine.
Icarus, what is that song snippet that you have as your intro?
Anyone know the intro song?
This looks pretty awesome. Shame it's so short.
>quake 2 prequel
You have my attention, sir.
Quake 2 is still my favorite game, its great.
I like at the Icarus title screen, just as the sound starts, it sounds very farty
This mod looks like a combination between Quake 2 and SiN?
What type of computer do you use? Just wondweing so when i buy one i can record and play crazy doom mods/maps without lag...
It looks neat but why didn't they just make it in the quake 2 engine?
Mapping in pure 3D tools is a nightmare
Really?
the weapon models are even blobby and weird like in quake2!
I honestly thought this mod was going to be like bioshock because of the name
But why use the doom engine instead of the quake engine?
Finally a Mod with good usage of 3D models!
You didn't show bfg! I'm mad! Quake bfg was such a awesome well made weapon.
Perteks Yep
Not BFG 10.000?
Graphicly that reminds me alot of System Shock.
Seems like they nerfed the strogg but this still looks fun AF. Gonna play
This is the Doom engine?! It looks like gold source...
Its annopengl sourceport.
For the title i thought it was a hacx fan mod sequel XD
Wow, pretty impressive... looks fun, even. BUT... I really must ask myself... WHY? Why make a 3d-model mod for the original Doom...? And a 3d-mod that's a prequel to QUAKE2?!

It's probably much much much easier to mod Doom than Quake 2
I had the same thought. This should have been a quake mod
Yeah, probably the time saved when using such easy tool as Doom map editors allows for including 3D models on it in less time it would take to do the same in native 3D engines. But I imagine it must use much more CPU power for the simplest of things?
Can you recommend q2 sourceports and good q2 editors?
you have to remember that WAY more people play doom than quake 2 nowadays

OH NO! GUYS! HE'S BEING ATTACKED BY BAD 3D!
Assets from SiN, Q2, Unreal...
I don't understand why they chose the low-res textures for the weapons...
It needs a longer campaign.
Pretty sure all of the textures are from their original games. Plus, having high-resolution textures on low-poly models would clash.
I know the textures are from their original counterparts but they could've pushed them to the point how they looked in original form. My eyes are mostly on the Q2s weapons. They seem to be extracted from... the software renderer. :D

is it just me or Icarus didn't sound much enthusiastic in this video?
btw, looks like a dope mod.
