Gino Matteo's performance at the King of the Blues Grand Finals. Clip taken from the upcoming Guitar Center King of the Blues '06 Grand Final Live DVD.
this guy is the perfect case of how life is just not fair sometimes. that man poured out his SOUL playing those licks. this man, is definitely one of the kings of blues.
He DID win !! Talent, personality, warmth, friendship, heart, soul he has it all....who needs competitions to show that ? Go to his gigs.. he wins EVERY time he plays !!!
A lot of people have the skill to play like that but more than often they lack the soul required to make it sound good. Props Mr. Matteo! Keep the soul!
Wow!! Just found this on here..love it!! :) You've come a long way Gino..with so much further to go!! I wish you and Jade all the happiness and success you can grab ahold of in this ole world!!! Love you both!! Go Rip Cat (and Kitty) Go!! It's the Blues Baby!! Heck Yeah!!
Like I said on the matt o'ree page, this man IS the blues. Just listen to him talk. Forget the guitar, we know he can play...just listen to him talk, he is without a doubt, the king of the blues. Title or not. He's got my admiration.
Hello Gino. I have seen you play in many recordings on youtube. I too am a guitarist and I too love the Blues, though I'm nowhere as good a guitarist as you are, nevertheless I give it my all. What I didn't know about you was that you have faith and in my case God is the most important thing in my life...without Him nothing in my life is possible. He is the One who makes everything possible. Take care and God bless. Mike.
F-ing guitar center man, they hold king of the BLUES contests and they give it to freaking shredders. This guy knows how to express emotion through his playing.
He is one of the few cats that are actually playing true blues. I love it. Hopefully Ill be on that stage this year but Ill be happy with winning store finals since its my first year competing. This cat is simply amazing.
I watch this video many times over. Man-I admire and respect you. The video is top notch start to finish but your interview was and always be most sincere and honest. When mention thanks and God you shared a speciall truth and love for smiles, dance and the music and all that is good. I have watched some of your live vid's on youtube. You got that special god given blues. If you ever tour toward texas-Houston make it real loud because I like say hello and shake your hand and drink merry and hear them blues you lay out. You are a artist and showman but not fake cause it is who you are. Thank you and Blues On. Brian Vereecke
Great performance! I'm probably going to play at the prelims in Nashville and I can't wait to see what the city has to offer. Once the Memphis crowd starts rolling in it'll be even better.
I know Gino and my friend was on his first CD I've Been Thinkin' playing all the harmonica and singing in the background. The last song with the harmonica player Micheal Fell whose dad is an actor Norman Fell the landlord on the hit TV show Three's Company. It is a CD worth getting. I have seen Gino play many times and what you see is what you get. He is a very nice guy and he is very humble. He is the real deal.
@zinnington I completely agree with you in that blues is an art form. Yes, do blues your own way, but don't lose what the blues is all about. It's about feeling and patience. Making one note cry, when you could be shredding the guitar to pieces. That's what separates blues from most other types of music. It's not about how many notes you can play, or how fast you can play a lick, in my humble opinion. Speed is impressive, but the blues is about the quality of notes, not quantity.
wow.....2:08 where he builds up the anticipation, then just plays two notes in the simplest possible way. people dont understand how extraordinary doing something like that can sound like, thats whats blues is all about
The comments here are a classic illustration of how the blues affects people differently. Gino is more of a traditional style blues player. I like him because of that and his great feel for the music is essential to the genre. Love the hat too. There are comments by others that seem to imply you aren't a blues man if you aren't a shredder. To me, the greatest "shredder" bluesman of our time was the late, great Brit - Gary Moore. Why not enjoy both extremes and everything in between? I know I do.
Man, I got shivery when I heard the first lick of this video. This guy is blues. And he's pretty damn entertaining. He should have won, hands down. But knowing Guitar Center, I wouldn't doubt if there was something fishy going down behind the scenes. But man, throughout the whole thing I was expecting him to start singing something, like belt out some SRV-sounding song lyrics or something. This guy's just great.
This guy should have won for sure. That's one of the things I don't like about this contest. The judges are looking for something different, but that's not what blues is about. In my opinion, blues is about tradition and old time soul. It's not about innovation or doing something with the blues that isn't normally seen. Just my humble opinion, but Gino grasps the class and soul of the blues that most every blues fan has grown to love.
i saw him live in a little gig with only like 100 people there 2 summers ago. he was with a great blues band called blinddog smokin. yall should check out his CD called Chasing The Dragon. great CD
Lord....please....don't let him lose those pants! He is tearing up that guitar...and I love the way he's suited and booted....but please don't let them pants hit that floor....LOL!
He's a fake, the ill fitted suit is stupid, if he knew anything, and knew the history of the Blues, he wouldn't act like such a TOOL! With the FAKE attire
Too bad cengeb is such a jealous twit! He must be a very miserable human being with no friends. I will pray for him/her.......and thank God for blessing Gino with such a great talent that he is willing to share with us.
Nice! EXTREMELY soulful playing dude!!! My name is Stëv Skye and I made the first round preliminaries at the Phoenix, AZ store :) I actually posted the performance (my first youtube post)... It's really awesome to see all the influences that have inspired your playing... Peace!
this guy is the perfect case of how life is just not fair sometimes. that man poured out his SOUL playing those licks. this man, is definitely one of the kings of blues.
Saw him last night with Jason Ricci in Auburn Hills, MI. Stunning. Simply stunning and gorgeous guitar work.

Gino was the best pure electric blues player there. For touch and feel he had them all covered. The blues is in good hands.
A lot of people have the skill to play like that but more than often they lack the soul required to make it sound good. Props Mr. Matteo! Keep the soul!
Praise God through the blues...cant get any better than that
