In the summer of 1914, German top brass ordered a full-frontal assault on Osowiec Fortress, located in north-eastern Poland. Germany saw Russia as a significant threat to their rising power, and the Osowiec Fortress remained one of the main obstacles to their advancement into Russian territory.
Three times the Germans tried to gain control of the fortress, and three times they failed. The fourth time, though, was different.
Germany sent no less than 14 battalions of infantry, sappers, siege guns, and artillery for the last attack on the fortification. However, unlike previous assaults on the fortress, they had a new weapon that would make all the difference: chlorine gas.
The Russians only had 1,000 men defending the fort, and less than half of them were conscripted militiamen.
At four o'clock on August 4, a dark green cloud of a chlorine and bromine mixture floated towards the Russians positioned at the fort's front. When the gas combined with the water in the air and their lungs, the substance turned the chlorine into hydrochloric acid, and the Russians began to dissolve from the inside out.
Because the soldiers had either no mask or a rudimentary version of one, the comrades had little to no protection when the fumes arrived at the fort.
When the Germans triumphantly strutted over to the defense barrier and began to march towards the inner fortifications, they were met by a gruesome sight that would haunt their dreams forever.
Instead of surrendering to the assault, the agonizing Russians decided to counterattack and fight for their country until their very last breaths.
And thus ensued a terrible gory battle, where roughly 100 Russians charged at the 7,000 German soldiers with their bayonets. The Germans turned and ran away, terrified at the horde of melted-faced zombie-like men charging through the darkness and attacking mercilessly.
This is the dire tale of the brave Russian soldiers who fought for their country despite being outnumbered and experiencing unimaginable physical pain. It's also a great reminder of why chemical warfare is banned all over the world.

The first film to bring Zombies to modern prominence didn't appear until 1932 (White Zombie) and most of what we think of as a zombie film is influenced by the later "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968. So whatever the Germans thought they saw when the dying soldiers counter-attacked was quite probably some sort of biblical reckoning or literal demons rather than "zombies" as we think of it.

My point was the Germans were probably thinking "These Russians are an actual scourge of god", not "its like a horror movie".

I think your use of the word 'heroism' is a gross understatement (although we sadly have no better word). To continue fighting against the odds requires heroism. To continue fighting when there is little chance of victory requires heroism. To continue fighting when you know your chances of survival are minimal requires heroism. To continue fighting when your body is deteriorating and the pain and horror you must feel are far more than most people can even imagine in their worst nightmares requires far more than just heroism. It requires a nearly superhuman level of dedication and courage that we have no single word to describe. IMHO, those soldiers went far, FAR beyond the definition of heroism.

This video misunderstands the mechanism of chlorine's toxicity and over-sensationalize it. It's only weakly acidic, similar to the CO2 that humans breathe out. It's toxic because it's a potent oxidizer, and it reacts with the proteins that cells need to live. It doesn't "completely dissolve" the lungs, it just kills the thin layer of cells which exchange CO2 and O2 in the lungs, causing suffocation. For those wondering about the acidity of chlorine, the equilibrium reaction is:
    Cl2 + H2O HCl + HOCl
Where the left side is strongly favored, so only trace amounts of HCl and HClO are formed.

"If they were going to die they would fight for their country til their last breath" . Their dedication to fight while in pain is so honorable , the Germans dropped their weapons and ran .. the Russians fierce fighting scared them into panic . That is some amazing history and I'm American . Still, one can't help but appreciate such beautiful sacrifice while in the chaos of a destructive war . Imagine witnessing that, very sad but those Russian men showed what a fighting spirit is capable of . God bless them though the pain was probably beyond comprehension hopefully they sat in victory for a while after showing so much heart .

I want him to cover the Night Witches next!!
WW2 Russian female pilots who flew almost strictly at night and terrorized the Germans.
They flew freaking slow fabric winged crop dusters and amazed even Germans Aces. Their crop dusters top speed was the stall speed for fighter planes so they could easily turn and dodge incoming fire.
They would fly to altitude (at night) glide their plane to their target, the. Restart their engines suddenly, drop their bombs, and get the Hell out!
The only sound heard was the soft rustle of fabric and the vibrations of the wing wires (like soft type writers).
The Germans called them Night Witches, and the women adapted the name as their own!
Military men whisper stories about them still to this day while training and at night. Heck my own dad admitted that.
While Russia and the USA don’t exactly get along.......
