    🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
    Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
    A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
    Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
    Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
    A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
    The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
    Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
    A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
    The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

    I think this video was important because it also shows that throwing shuriken were not necessarily intended to kill or harm the target. If they did, great, but my understanding was they were more a distraction, one you could not ignore if you wanted to avoid injury. I see anime fans of shinobi shows often argue over why waste all the time throwing kunai and shuriken if they 'never do anything' before being deflected or blocked. A kunai blocked or dodged is movement sapping energy and interrupting flow that is not focused on your opponent.

    It is interresting to note that Seiko Fujita credits Asayama Ichiden ryu to be one of the school that teaches traditionnal shuriken jutsu. See his book Zukai Shuriken Jutsu (1964).

    I just watched Yojimbo last night and wondered how a shuriken throw would look in real life. Seki Sensei is such a treasure and endlessly entertaining to watch. Absolutely love this channel and it’s changed how I view my own katana training. I hope to make it to the seminar in Miami or another in the future.

    Yes! This is awesome. I do the same thing. I throw overhand and underhand but cross body diagonally because it brings my hand to the handle for a draw cut. I use shaved down galvanized nails as shrunken no spin throw. My throwing ability is only two sword lengths distance though but I think it's enough for a throw to draw cut.

    I enjoy these explorations of Samurai fighting techniques and tools. Watching Seki Sensei effortlessly maneuver and fluidly attack or defend while explaining what he's doing is much more informative than 'static' displays with little explanation. I have a question that I hope he can help explain. That question is, How were Samurai used in large battles. I expect that they, being considered an equivalent to a western medieval knight, would be used as heavy cavalry, but is this really how they were used? What techniques do Samurai use in such close combat, where there range of motion may be hampered by fellow soldiers nearby? I would love to see a kind of tactical overview on Samurai in the pitched battles of the Shogunate eras.

    Very informative. Thank you. I am curious. How did the star-shaped Shuriken come to be associated with the Ninja. Is there history there or is it sheer fantasy? I’ll try to do some reading up on the topic in the meantime.

    • @FireStar-gz2ry
      @FireStar-gz2ry Рік тому +7

      As far as I can tell from the limited resources I've been able to find on this, the kind of Shuriken used doesn't really matter, nor who uses it. The distinction and use of Bo Shuriken V.S Star Shuriken is well documented by Samurai. In all likelihood, the idea of throwing stars being solely a Ninja's weapon probably came out back when the word "Ninja" was invented by Hollywood, tho the groups we come to associate the name with did exist historically (or some of them anyways)

    • @johnguss6087
      @johnguss6087 Рік тому +3

      @@FireStar-gz2ry Thank you very much. I had begun to suspect there was more than a little fantasy behind the Hollywood portrayal.

    • @TheShurikenZone
      @TheShurikenZone Рік тому +7

      @johnguss6087 Honestly, from a historical standpoint, shaken/kurama shuriken/etc... are a murky topic. Bo shuriken are a well documented item, with some later ryuha (Negishi Ryu, Shirai Ryu, Chishin Ryu, and so on) even specializing in their use. Shaken, though... There's not a ton of historical evidence for their wide use. There's a school of thought that says they were developed as an esier-to-use shuriken, or a shuriken for beginners. As for their connection to shinobi, generally speaking, there's not much of one. Shinobi specialized in espionage, and their physical martial arts were mostly apart from their shinobi arts; they trained in the same martial arts as any other bushi would. And most shinobi WERE bushi. Make no mistake- The idea that ninjutsu was developed by peasants is a misconception. It was developed by rural bushi... mostly in Iga and Koka... in a time when the Japanese class system was not as rigid as it was in the Edo jidai.

    Konichiwa!! First video I watched of this channel and subscribed. I am wondering how do you store the suriken? Where on the body are they placed , for example if you are using the under arm throw for subtlety, where then are you getting the suriken from with equal subtlety?

    Could a handful of sand work in the same way if it's thrown at the opponents eyes?
    They have to react to it, it might obscure their vision, and it's a nasty surprise.
    I certainly wouldn't expect an opponent with a sword to use sand of all things as their opening attack.
    In short: Is pocket sand actually effective?
