- After a failed attempt to interfere in the succession of the new sultan, the Byzantine now must man the defenses and protect their capital Constantinople! The Ottoman Empire was outraged by their actions and was going to seek revenge by taking the grand city in 1422. The siege was gruesome, and eventually the Ottomans were defeated. But ever since the siege, the Byzantine Empire never fully recovered. Enjoy the Siege of Constantinople :D

Why do I block out the Mini-Map with annotations for Sub battle replays?
I block it out because the Mini-Map gives away who sent in the battle replay. And in most cases whoever sends in the battle replay wins the battle. So I block it to keep it a surprise :D

Great vid, you showed so much passion for total war with your narration. This vid reminded me why I love total war. After playing total war since I was about 7 or 8 I've gotten to a point where I just auto resolve about every battle, but after watching this I remembered how amazing it is to actually play the battles. It was indeed a great siege battle, but the warscape engine just makes me so sad... I mean, just look at the charge of the varangian guard at 15:16 and compare it to varangian Guard charging in medieval 2...

So much historical ignorance in these comments claiming byzantines arent greek but romans... what if i told you they where ethnic greeks but still romans- Even Konstantin XI told his soldiers in the morning befor the last battle of 1453 to never forget that they are greeks AND Romans. They spoke greek too and identified as such. Roman is a title that many countries used, nothing to do with ethnicity. For example the ottomans referred to themselves as romans too after capturing Constantinople. So Did the holy roman empire of german nation and few others. Being roman doesnt exclude being a german greek, turkish or whatever

Right but the Byzantines were the actual continuation of the Roman empire, they continued Roman institutions and the Ottomans were obviously not Roman and Neither was the HRE that was just a title, it was symbolic of being the new Western Roman Empire.
No one is claiming they were etnhically roman (latin), what people are saying, is that their "nationality" was roman, they were citizens of "Rhomania", the Roman Empire, and called themselves romans.

At 11:29 I think I know why your troops didn't want to get on the walls. There was no way to go down from them, because all of the towers where destroyed.

Hmm, I just testet this on the vanilla and I did the same things as Apollo. Destroyed towers, made a hole in the walls where he did and moved the siege towers. Same thing happened to me. My troops didn't want to get on the walls. And the enemy troops couldn't get down. Even when they routhed they still couldn't get down. The Siege towers can't be used to go back down from the walls, that was working in rome 1 and medieval 2, not in the new TW. So its like I said, no way for them to go down and thats why they didn't get on the walls.
Its not from the mod, its how the game is made.

They were personally loyal to the office of the Emperor. Never heard of jiostinani, sure you are not mixing up something?
I was talking about the Varangian Guard, which had pretty much ceased to exist at this point. They disappeared from official records during the 13th century although there are some few sources of people self-identifying as Varangians during the fall. Giovanni was the captain of the Genoans and Venetians, and had nothing to do with the Guard. In either case If the guard had existed, they were a different part of the byzantine army with their own officers and ultimately answered to the emperors person rather than a mercenary captain.

If this was in 1422, the Varangian Guard should not have been there. They had been destroyed almost two centuries before.
About the framerate: Your PC does better playing TOTAL WAR while recording than mine does playing MINECRAFT while recording. Just think about that for a second.

as I recall, turkish were not neither Ottoman, nor Empire at this time period. they took this name AFTER the Fall of Constantinopolis. back then they were called the Seljuc Turks and their state was Seljuk Sultanate.

Good on you for apologizing. But the name Ottoman was already used back then, they were from the Ottoman Ghazi and founded by Osman. The Seljuk sultanate had fallen already before this

The Byzantines knew enough about hand grenades, since they invented them. Check wikipedia "Hand grenades". They were actually described in a classical Greek text as well. Strange as that sounds. In those days I guess they only wrote about the principles.
Damn, I am so lucky to be staying up this late, especially since I am Turkish. Kind of disappointing to have an Arab faction replace the Turks. But to be honest, we do suck at besieging even in real life, so I am not blaming you guys. By the way Apollo, in case you didn't know, the monster bombard in Medieval 2 is the Falcon Cannon.

+Pasan Etternavn since this is a 1212 mod they can't add ottoman units for accuracy. But it would be better for balancing
However if they also allow later period units for the Turks they should for other factions.
ThePro 132 They did fight alongside the Turks but not during the 1400s. Arabs troops started being used in the Ottoman Empire after the fall of the Mamluk Sultanate during the 1500s which gave us control of most of the Arab territory.

Jackiefish really knew what he was doing. If you watch, he handled himself very well and all around I believe inflicted more casualties than any of the other Ottomans.
First off, I enjoyed the video. I love the boys in purple eh I mean reddish brown.
However, how was this battle ever balanced? The attackers had 3 teams, and 2,300 more men than the Defenders. Furthermore, the city was barely fortified with little to no defenses. It's basically an open land battle after you open two-four walls and take out the watchtower with one of your onagers. The only way this battle would be fair (without changing the # of units on each team) is if the Defenders had a 3rd human to command and micro, or if their defenses were actually sturdy, like with onagers on the walls, stronger walls, spike pits, etc.
I'm sure really great players can beat these odds up above, but it doesn't change the fact that the battle is still unbalanced.
Edit: I'd like to see the same numbers but with two humans attacking and three defending, I think that would make it fair
Ryan Spence Well attackers have more of an advantage because the archers can shoot them behind the cover of the walk and there are archer towers and oil.
I've never really just played siege battles in total war I usually do great campaigns but you've made me wanna just play sieges haha your vids are awesome
Historical representation? Come on. This is a game simulation of some digitally created city but it is NOT Constantinople. This simulation has got nothing to do with history. The walls on Constantinople were so thick it did not fall for more than 800 years. It wouldnt get knocked down by a couple of catapult shots. There were multiple layers of walls and trenches too around the city. The city did eventually fall to the arabs but only after multiple days of cannon shots.

Its because the Turkish faction is currently underpowered as they don't have that many units, so the Arab Sultanate with a more complete roster was used in its place.
İbrahim Barış Kula turks in this mode are useless so they got arabs for balance issues

Liam Parker yes, but it's more of a prestigious title. They weren't roman like those of the old latin west anymore, but not fully greek like the Antigonids and Seleucids before them. not roman, not greek. Romaioi
+Steel Patterns Regardless they were technically roman because they called themselves the roman empire even though their ethnicity wasn't roman. Like I am white yet my nationality is south African.
Liam Parker when something is "technically" a thing, it only means that it meets a checklist. You are technically qualified to be a south african because you have citizenship there since birth. But if you went to, say, the UK, you would commonly pass by a british man just fine.

Who remembers how close 10000 knights was way back in the day. That was the best siege I have ever witnessed.
Spatharioi comes from spathi which is sword.
Scoutatoi comes from skouton which is a large oval (later kite-shaped) shield made of wood, covered by linen or leather and edged with rawhide, with a steel boss in earlier periods.
Cataphracts means literally those who are totally covered by armor.
Kontaratoi comes from contarion which is the pike.
