We have a heap of Magpies that live near us. In our yard plus in the park next door. During the “non nesting season” we occasionally throw them a bit of food. Maybe some dog pebbles or left over chips. Magpies are one of the few birds that have “face recognition” (they can recognise a person for 23 years according to recent studies). It’s currently “nesting season” here, and they won’t swoop anyone in our household. Our dog and the kids walking past on their way to school seem to be “fair game”. Us? Nope. They don’t see us as a “threat” to their chicks [cue spooky music].

We’ve never killed them, but we do catch them with a tub and release them into the garden - our dog thinks he’s a bug killing machine, so we definitely wouldn’t keep them as residents 😆

As an Australian I can say this is legitimately a sensible list for the most part. - the comedy ones are annoyances - the serious ones you take seriously for a reason. Cane toads don’t spit poison. It is the white stuff that they extrude behind their eyes.

Great work BAM Fam. We are born and bred Qlders but even so we still breathe a sigh of relief when summer is done and the rest of the year is mostly pretty nice. We know a lot of Brits and you think they would all want to live in Melbourne or Tassie but many find once they move here they can't stand the cold worse than most Aussies. You’ve got to love Magpies. They have such a great attitude - couldn’t give a rats about humans. If they know you they won’t attack...I find they are more polite than kookaburras when it comes to food. The Maggie’s tend to wander up and hang until you feed them. The laughing sky pirates just swoop in and grab what they want. They are insane!

You might not see them regularly but brown snakes (in bush and scrub and sometimes in swimming pools) and funnel web spiders (bush etc) are out there. Just make sure you have a long handle shovel for snakes and wear covered shoes in the bush for spiders and a fly net in the outback regions as the flies are a real pain. Also check the dunny seat if you use an outdoor toilet for readback spiders :).

“Tailgaters” are idiots, but even they don’t want to be “dead idiots”. They don’t know what is in front of you (could be some road kill or whatever). Again, just touch the brake pedal enough to engage your own brake light. You aren’t actually braking. Remain at the same speed. I’ve done this many times. It works a treat.

Befriend a Magpie and you will live in peace and harmony for ever. A family of Magpies live in my neighbourhood, I've helped them raise generations of babies and I've never been swooped, ever. They come to my backdoor in the morning, sing to attract my attention and they eat from my hand. If I dine outside they will come to the table looking for something to eat. I push some food to the side of the plate and they understand that is their food. When it's eaten, they fly off. To love a Magpie is to have a friend for life.

As a Pome too, there are still things I find strange after many years. I experienced my first bush fire in 1983, Ash Wednesday in Victoria. In those days it was land line calls. I was shocked, my family were panicked.

@@TheBAMFamalam fun fact, Australian Magpies recognise their local humans by face. You only get swooped by magpies in an area where they don't know you. Its why you see cyclists with zip tags sticking out of their helmets, or eyes painted on the back.
Wear a hat. Has a dual purpose, keeps maggies off, also helps prevent skin cancers on your scalp ( yes, that is a real thing)
Hot tip, feed your local maggies, they'll do you a favour in return and keep the bastard currawongs, mynahs and butcher birds out of your garden 😉

Great videos guys, have recommended your site to friends who are moving to Oz as soon as the borders are opened. (From the UK.) Re birds, I live in a small coastal community on the Qld. coast, just near Fraser Island. Every morning and arvo I hand feed 3 kookaburras, 2 or more magpies and a varying number on butcher birds. The magpies are the gentlest of the pack, polite, thankful. The reason the numbers vary, they bring in their babies to learn. When adults ,they move on. Never been attacked once. For those interested, I asked the vet what to feed the birds. NOT MINCE. Buy a cheap log of dog food from Aldi, beef or kangaroo,, with vegetables.

Tailgating is not so bad in NSW as the HWP down here see it as an easy revenue raiser (negligent driving...4 points $400 fine). Our pet hate is drivers doing more than 10kph BELOW the speed limit. They deserve tailgating.

First up, LOVE your vids, bloody funny and very informative!.. Here's a secret about removing unwanted multi-legged 'guests' that you don't want. Many years ago, my Wife, who has a mortal fear of spiders, cockroaches and pretty much everything else, yelled out to me, as she was sitting in the next room, 'Get rid of it, Get rid of it!!. I bolted in, thinking that it was the largest snake in Australia, to see her pointing to the wall, where a Huntsman was sitting, minding it's own business. I shot to the bug killer cupboard, NOTHING, 'cept a spray bottle of Genuine Windex glass cleaner. Now, without going into needless detail, I turned the nozzle to 'Jet', (very important), and from two metres away, gave it two squirts, and within 2-3 seconds, it had joined its Ancestors. This works on ALL multi-legged bugs, but it MUST be the genuine Windex, the cheap stuff is useless, both for cleaning glass, and anything else. Windex, "cleans as it kills"!.

Huntsman spiders are harmless and a good thing to have in the house, they eat just about everything. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and will sit on the wall above your bed in the night waiting for passing visitors. If you don't want them in your house, they're dead easy to catch, just be aware that they run fast, can run sideways like a crab and can disappear in an instant. Their favourite method of escape is to abseil out of harm's way. I catch them with a broom and a plastic bucket. Move the broom behind them on the wall and the will abseil into your waiting bucket; easy peasy. Take the bucket out into the garden, or where ever you want to release the spider, lay the bucket on its side and leave the spider to make it's own way home. Never kill a Huntsman, they're beautiful creatures.
