Oz born and bred. Spent some time in Serbia and France a few years ago. When I came back I just couldn't believe just how much SPACE we have here. The Sky, the horizon, even tables at the cafe. So much space. Thankfully.
The amount of sky you can see really struck us as well. The other one is road width - when we went to the UK a few years back I mistook 2 lanes for 1 and cut another car up - it’s an easy mistake to make after driving in Oz 😆
I live in Ontario, Canada. If you don't have a family doctor, you can go to a walk-in clinic, see a doctor, get a prescription, or get a referral for blood tests or X-rays just as easily. A walk-in clinic doctor can even refer you to a specialist or order a ct or mri, that will take time to get, but it can all be done quickly. Everything that was said in the vid happens in Canada. Hell, my son just graduated high school and got a job driving a rock truck for a lumber company. He gets 20$ an hour to start and has never driven a rock truck before. Canada and Australia are very similar in many ways. There are only two other countries I would ever consider moving to, Australia and Norway. I will never step foot in the U.S again, people have no idea the $ hit-hole that place really is.
My friend, in his early 50's needed extra cash for his retirement. He got his heavy truck license, forklift ticket, crane ticket and now has a job in the mines around the Pilbara. Three weeks on(12 hr days) one week off, taking home pay after tax about $3500 , per week! Many working there, if not most, finish up after 5 to 7 years with the million dollar mortgage paid off and set up for the rest of their life. By the way , the minimum wage in Aust is $21.38 per hour (cad to aud is roughly equal in value) so driving a truck for $20 per hour ,even as a first job , would have Aussies shaking their heads.

I’m and Aussie and I’ve been to Vancouver and my husband went there many times as he worked for a company there. People have said it’s the closest to Melbourne’s twin in culture, attitude etc. I have to agree.

What I love about the Aussies is if you can't find it in their store, the store will suggest another alternative store to go to find what you're looking for. Us Aussies always helpful.
I don't agree with your comment. I have suggested where to buy the product that wasn't provided in a store I worked at. I did it to help the customer and 9 times out of 10 they appreciated it. The same customer came back to the store I was working at again and again because I was so helpful. Owners of stores also suggest alternatives if they don't stock the product. It's just what Aussie's are known for. If someone is nice and helpful you will remember them and the store. 🙂
i went to my pharmacy the other day and they didn't have what I was after. The pharmacist said she'd try to 'borrow' it from another pharmacy, if not she would have it delivered the next day. Four hours later I got a call to tell me that they had it. I was charged just over half what the Doctor told me it would cost, the wholesale price, because they hadn't been able to supply it when I first went in. How good is that!

I was looking for a special brand and the shop didn’t stock it but let me know the one that did. I will go back to that shop in future.

We are from NZ and we agree, that health care is top notch in Australia. With Medicare, health care even tops NZ, in our opinion.👍

Loving all the comments on the red flowers. When I moved from Aus to the UK, I discovered that they think Poinsettias are small indoor plants, I always think of them as garden trees.
I also think we are pretty top notch at assisting each other after natural disasters too!

Hi guys. Re the NHS v Medicare, to be fair, whilst in London I had an allergic reaction to a plant (nettles I think), and was seen by a doctor within about half an hour at a medical centre in north London. Doctor prescribed a steroid based ointment costing less than 20 pounds and no charge for the consultation. At the time I was unaware there was a reciprocal arrangement between Australia and the UK. Most impressed and pleasantly surprised with the nil cost.
When you need urgent care the NHS are extraordinary. And that is a great point you made about the cost of medication - there is a set prescription charge, whatever the medication is in the UK 😊
You are absolutely spot on! We miss Australian coffee but our friends bought us back a few bags of Merlo to tide us over. As a nurse both in Oz and UK I wholeheartedly agree with the comments about healthcare - we do it better than anywhere we have seen. Definitely the wage vs. cost is better back in Oz. Great video🙂

Yep you NAILED IT! It’s easy to forget how lucky we really are….until you travel and then you’re often reminded. Its great to see how much you guys love your new life in Australia. My Scottish dad emigrated with his family straight after the war (he was 17) and although he was very sentimental about Scotland and missed the relatives left behind, he loved it here too ❤️

Exact same story about my husband (my kids' father) but he never expressed an interest in Scotland since, just ran around with his Irish counterparts for many years.
My experience during covid showed me just how much that "luck" is gone

The coffee culture and coffee snobbery thing is such an interesting phenomena. It is so pervasive you would think it has always been that way. But it hasn't. Up until the 80's Australia was far and away dominated by tea. Hence we still have morning and afternoon tea. Coffee, even in restaurants, was almost always instant coffee. Somewhere around the early 80's the Italian and Greek cultures began to influence the broader culture in a way that saw the transition to espresso coffee. You could literally see it happen. One year you would walk into a café and ask for coffee and it would come out instant, the next there would be a barista wanting to know if you wanted long black or flat white. I can remember the actual day in my life where I encountered those terms for the first time. Now Australian's tend to think it has always been that way - but it most certainly has not.

Yes but that depends who you are. My parents were from Europe and we grew up with coffee. Not much tea in our household...
My mother died in 2008 and in 94 years never even tasted anything but black tea. I had it too, but started trying coffee after aged 15, but it was difficult to get to like in the city cafes. Now I must have the full body taste of coffee. Tea doesn't do it for me.
thats why we called it tea break instead of coffee break for mid day break if your workplace has it :D
@@783342 I grew up having black tea myself (though I do love good coffee now). I lived in London some years ago and was shocked to find that hardly anyone drank black tea. To me, tea with milk is awful, however I have it with coffee.
Mum & Dad emigrated from UK just after WWII & never went back. There's not a day goes by I don't bless their memory they chose Aus so's I could be born here. Great to hear you're loving it too 🥰
Apparently 'Starbucks' didn't do enough research the coffee culture here. They soon went broke.
Too many sweet additives, we like our coffee to be coffee.
We do have good coffee here.... introduced by Italian immigration in the 1950's. Give it a try, you may start to like it.
We saw how much everyone raved about it when we first moved over, so we tried… but we are still not keen coffee drinkers… although the smell of coffee beans is incredible! 😁
Australians ( or is it just the media?) whine about our health system, but in my lengthy experience, it's FANTASTIC.

You are right about the health care. We are in Melbourne western suburb and easily get a GP appointment, CT scan, pathology and prescription . Most GPs bulk billed here, meaning you are not out of pocket . I agree with all that you said about Australia and I migrated here 40 years ago.
I also think that most of us aussies embrace the idea that we work to live. We don’t live to work.

One of the reasons I loved travelling to Sydney and Melbourne was to walk the streets past all the Greek and Italian cafes and restaurants and be hit with the aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee , even the coffee served on the planes enroute was magical to me its the little things that make life wonderful . When I was managing a retail chain I always got my my store managers to brew fresh coffee in the morning and replenish it as needed the smell in store definitely attracted customers and a free coffee went a long way to a great staff/customer relationship it cost practically nothing and the benefits were very rewarding . I can't even start to comment on your other points I've awakened a craving for a good cup of coffee so I'm off

And the Lebanese Ali Baba take away cafes, the Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants... it's all so interesting.

Public Healthcare means you might have to wait for elective stuff, but you will never have to wait for emergency stuff (nor be billed for it.)
Believe me you wait in America too.
The ‘living wage’ was mandated by the industrial arbitration court of the High Court in 1907 in the Harvester case (Ex parte H.V. McKay). The living wage was determined to be the amount that would allow a family of 5 to live reasonably. All awards since 1907 have been based on that standard - and non-award salaries have to have that as a minimum. This is the basis of the minimum wage standards. They’re a bit of a pain to apply but they work.
When I was a kid everyone in WA was a fifo and it was pretty brutal. Back then it was all tents and Croatians and Serbians knifing each other in the mining camps. But fifo causes a lot of problems, particularly because it pushes house prices up as every young fifo worker for the last 20 years goes on a binge of investing in rental properties.
Absolutely agree with your list, but I feel you missed 1 thing (I've also lived in USA, Singapore and Greece) so this is based on my experience. We seem to also have the best superannuation package for retiring as well. Your 3 kids will retire here with millions in super, and live a very comfortable life because their boss's will be paying a decent percentage of their gross wages into their super accounts, even without extra contributions they can also make into it. Our superannuation schemes are designed to make you totally financially dependant, so the tax payers don't have to support you on the pension, which in turn adds to the countries wealth. You guys created your own lotto win, the minute you decided to move down under - you've supplied your kids, your grandkids and future generations, the chance of living a happy, comfortable, beautiful life that others can only dream of

Pleased to see you're getting over covid Ben.
I can vouch for your excellent healthcare. 2016, 2 days into our holiday, just stepped onto the Miramar and sat in our seats ready for a cruise to the Koala Sanctuary, when hubby collapsed. Terrific paramedics, and immediate care when taken into emergency at Mater hospital. Very soon diagnosed with pneumonia.
4 weeks later I was admitted to the Maitland Hospital NSW and very soon after arriving after having x-rays, scans and MRI, I was diagnosed with a Splenic rupture haematoma. Surprised to be told we don't have to pay, but when we arrived home to the UK we received a bill for almost $AU 1300 which thankfully was paid for by our travel insurance. I know your videos are aimed at those emigrating to Australia, but I can't emphasise enough, the importance of having Travel Insurance when going there, or anywhere else in the world.
Sadly, we're too old to emigrate, but I love all your videos and information as they're also helpful for tourists 🙂💖

There’s a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, but there may be fees for items which we would pay for here as well. For example if you don’t have private medical insurance you can get charged over a $1000 for an ambulance.
@@kayelle8005 We didn't know that, until one of the nurses told my hubby while he was in A&E in Brisbane. Paramedics came out to me in NSW. After doing obs etc for suspected heart attack and all obs fine, they suggested to my cousin to take me to hospital. I was sitting on the edge of the bed when they arrived, so they didn't get to see the agony and serious condition I was in. We didn't get charged for calling them out. Fully expected to have to pay $1200+ as well as that amount for the ambulance for hubby in Brisbane. Am I correct in saying that it varies in different states in Australia?
@@sandrahaigh2976 yep I think ambulance costs do vary because they would be the responsibility of the various state and territory governments rather than the federal government.
I got a rude shock when i received my first ambulance bill start the first aid officer at work called an ambulance when I was having a medical issue. Super lucky I had private insurance.
The two words I dread more than any other coming out of my wife's mouth - framers market.
I get chills just writing it.

I rarely use the health system here, but it was my understanding that many European countries had better health care systems so your comments are interesting to hear. I have had to have an ultrasound a couple of times for sports injuries and living in Brisbane was able to make an appointment and have it done within 1-2 days - mostly depending on my work.
I don't drink coffee but my family do and they love it , there are stores in the USA ( New York etc ( that specialise in Australian coffee.The healthcare system is fantastic My cancer drugs a few years ago cost not much at all , in the USA the same drugs would have been $370,000 PER year !! Blood tests like I get cost thousand in the USA as a friend over there had the same tests . Nice to see Ben up and about and the rest of you didn'tt get it .

2 things to start with - Country Health Systems - [1] - I though your old Country had a "wonderful NHS"? [2] - Coffee Culture Down under (includes NZ) - if you get to observe people going to work (& kids to school) you will find that they pass a Coffe2 Shop and will walk away with their preferred Cup of ...? (in NZ we have mobile coffee carts alongside roads, and the number of people who now txt ahead with an order [paid for same way] drive in/pick up/drive on - the other one is early morning coffee meetings) - strange thing is my wife likes English Tea??
We even cater for tiny Aussie toddlers in our cafes .. 🍼 Most Aussie mums know what a Babyccino is... 🤣 Babyccino is simply warm milk with cinnamon or cocoa powder sprinkled on top, without coffee. And it's sugar free! Our babes are delighted to have their own drink while parents can sip their coffees in peace. 🍵

Sadly we do have a 'samey' situation creeping in; go to the main street of, say, Tamworth, a major regional city, and you'll find every single 'chain' shop that you see in Sydney or Melbourne and suburban shopping centres. This is a pity, but I guess inevitable.
I'm predominantly a tea drinker but I have 1 or 2 Flat White coffees a week. Give it a try.

Yea I went to a doctor’s appointment when I got checked over, screen test, blood test, X-ray on heart, echocardiograph all within four 1/2 hrs same day. I think it’s something to do with half the population going through private so it takes the pressure off the public system.
Private Insurance only pays for hospital stay and procedures such as surgery. All these tests go through Medicare for everyone.

I lived in the UK for 11 years and couldn’t believe how low the wages were there. I was lucky as I had a great job, but still had to share with 4 others (no not Australians) to afford rent in London.
I'm 73 now but when I went to Hong Kong at the end of 1970 I missed the trees and a good drink of milk.
The tennis, the rugby .. the cricket sorry Ben .. just joking .. 🤣 we dont expect you to go that far in your allegiances (things we do better).. i love the red poinsettias behind you ❣️.. We had them in my childhood home here in Bris …Great video again .. love them🌺🌺

We just had to google that, we hadn’t heard of the term before.
That is terrible to hear - it’s not something we’ve witnessed. We have had to visit the hospital 4 times in the last 6 months (thanks to Ella 🤦🏽♀️), and have only seen good things ourselves.
@@TheBAMFamalam Herein Perth we have up to 6000+ hours of ramping....that's hours that the ambulance sits outside the hospital waiting for a bed to become available. Love your videos and Sunshine Coast is beautiful...we've been there a few times stayed at Marcoola Beach and we really loved Maroochydore. As a coffee drinker I can confirm that from My travelling experience Australian coffee is the best.
I was in Europe and the UK in 2019 and even the Italian coffee was not great. Of course, American coffee is just rubbish and I'd rather drink bottled water than that dishwater.
Spain, from experience over many visits, is the only country I've been to that has good coffee. Perhaps that's the ancient Moorish influence?
NHS - knee open wound- 6-8 hours of waiting. >>> pretending to be passing out >>> offered a painkiller to be able to wait 6-8 hours. After 20 min went home + bought a bunch of medicine to heal wounds by myself. Good job nhs!!! Seriously I don’t believe public health care is good anywhere. But we will see at some point if you are right with Australia. This is good to be true… kind regards from Devon:)
new viewer. so far enjoying content. whilst compared to lot of the world our Australian medical system is awesome but it is somewhat disorganised. i would like to know where you friend got through so quick but ring a practice just about anywhere else for that and it will probably take at least 24hrs if not longer. there are many rural areas you could be a six hour drive from your gp and the pathology gets posted to a regional centre for processing before you get results. get chemist to parcel post you scrip and hope it's right?
I don't drink coffee very much. I'm a dedicated tea drinker. I only buy Australian grown tea. Nerada or Madura
We love Australia and we love our health care. No the poor people in remote areas struggle. We all pay 2% of our income towards medicare and that includes the disability insurance scheme. We pay good taxes but we live a good life. Says me on a descent income.
That 2% only covers about 20% of the total cost of Medicare ; the remaining 80% comes from other taxes and the tax burden will only keep rising as the large post war generation retire and don't pay any taxes except the GST. The NDIS is also a tax time bomb which has, already after only a few years, grown from the original estimate of $2B to a projected $20B. ''Freebies'' from the government always attracts snouts in the trough and a rationalisation of who is entitled to taxpayer money will have to be made by courageous politicians. Now that's an oxymoron.

3 years ago we were on Amtrak from Seattle to Vancouver. We went to the dining car and asked for a cappuccino....the server said 'this ain't no Starbucks'......
That reply sounds authentically American.
Living in melbourne with a life long life threatening condition, and the amount of tests I gave had I can say majority of tests are "walk-ins" get it done within 30 from the doc ordering it, or when ever you decide to get it done. I thought the U.K was the same. The one main test that cant be "walk-in" is a colonoscopy, obiviously.

Love you vidoes and enthusiasm. I have many UK mates that go home and come back. And they all say the same thing. Everyone is eating crap food in the UK and the quality of helathy food is better here downunda.
Have you noticed your own health improving? Would be an interesting video if you could talk about how the quality of life here has improved your families health and fitness.
And what is the English fascination with baked beans. When I first went to the UK in 1972 I stayed for a few days with an English family in Dartford, Kent until I got some digs in a share house in London and just about every meal had a serving of baked beans......probably a false memory but that's how I remember it.

Not only working in the middle of nowhere, you have to work 12 hour days for 2-3 and sometimes 4 weeks then you get a week off. Some of it can be shift work as well.
That means 84hr weeks for a 3 week stint is 250 hours for the month when everyone else is working 152 hour months, yes that extra 100 hours is paid as over time, but the base wage is generally the same as the job you would have in the city. But that is why a lot of people can't sustain that output for too many years.

In about 2005 I was working in China and i was coming back for a holiday in January so I rang my skin cancer hospital to schedule an appointment and asked the nurse if she could could pencil in a time for any day surgery operation if required in that two weeks window (I had what i suspected to be a BCC). She said fine and that is what happened. I had the appointment, then had the minor surgery to cut out the BCC and then went back to China. The whole exercise cost me nothing as it was covered by medicare.

Agree about most of these. The Italians can do great espresso, but they can also make crap stuff too. America is catching up on the coffee, but have a long way to go I think, although great coffee can be found when you look for it. The coffee in the UK was undrinkable 40 years ago, but you can find good coffee there now if you look. The difference is that in Australia good coffee is everywhere, including even service stations that sometimes employ baristas as serving staff!
Most Australians don't understand how good the medical system is here. All they need to do is live in another country or two for a while and it will become apparent Australia has it mostly nailed (in the main centres at least).
The good wages come from a long history of unions working for their members. Once again, live in another country and it becomes clear Australians are generally paid fairly, especially at the lower end of the wage spectrum.
Also agree with the friendliness. I can't stand how Americans treat retail staff, even though I know it's not generally intentional. But there is a difference between the city and the countryside in Australia. The rural areas are even friendlier generally speaking.

Very good .....for anmerture bloggers ...mind you tho a few things have changed since this video came out ..Obviously " they say health care is really good and across the board it generally is But and I do say but since the covid /acromeon scare the health system has taken a dive and it's harder to see your g.p these days leta lone hospital care .which you would say I'm stated the bleeding obvious it is getting harder .And even tho certain wages are pretty damn good compared to other countries the price of living in Australia has risen dramatically too .natural disasters has also taken its toll in Australia adding to shortages both of food as well amemties like gas and electricity prices hike ..other words Australia has caught up with the rest of the world .

Australia got introduced to Espresso early in the 20th century, so that and only that is what Australians call "coffee". Whereas in the US, we started drinking coffee in the 1770s because the English controlled the tea imports and we were at war with them. The espresso machine wasn't invented until the 1880s, so Americans had been drinking drip coffee at home, and away from home for 100 years by then. For us Americans and Canadians, both drip coffee and espresso are "coffee", chances are good most of us still make and drink drip coffee at home like we always have. When a European or Australian(or other people who are not familiar with drip coffee) come here and order "coffee" they are probably going to be disappointed! PRO TIP: Look for an Espresso shop(not Starbucks, that is the "fast food" of coffee here), and get your coffee there. I'll continue to drink my half-liter to full liter of drip coffee that I make at home, that fancy stuff is nice but expensive to drink in quantity like I do.
