    *Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

    I feel there are better products to use than WD per your recommendation. I suggest caution when using brake cleaner. Some may be chlorinated or contain strong solvents. They could possibly damage plastic components.

    Good comparison maybe include line lay, knob design and fatigue, casting issues and after market upgrades. No matter what level fishing experience everybody needs a few mid range beater rig's. just because they cost less doesn't excuse them from being dependable. You never know witch rig hooks your personal best!

    When you open the side plate of from the Sargus Penn Battle or any of their new line up Slammer III Clash spinning reels on top of the main gear you have a ball bearing when you remove and slide off the ball bearing from the main gear you'll see thin washers seated on the main gear, these washers are called shims. When you remove a shim from the Battle and put the ball bearing back on and put the reel back together you'll have more play in the reel handle and less grinding when you crank the reel when you add a shim it'll make that unpleasant reel throb and vibrate because the pinon and main gears in Penn reels don't mesh well and don't feel good in your hands when cranking it Penn is manufacturing reels with a mechanically flawed design. The older model Penn SS series metal of graphite reels didn't have shims on the main gear and had a cap on the bottom of the housing to keep the main shaft in place and never buzzed or grind like the spinning reels they're putting out today. All the new Penn reels lose their smoothness because the gears and components are built metal on metal and have no Teflon support bushings under the pinion gear main shaft and cross wind gear, and the gears are cheap die cast, and the CNC gears they make aren't all that good compared to Shimano or even the New inexpensive Daiwa BG series reels. After picking the new BG sires reel and feeling it in my hand and hearing my friends and reading into all these video review like yours on the Daiwa spinning tackle I'm going to switch over to the Daiwa products, even the inexpensive Daiwa BG has Penn beat in function feel and quality, it's not where the reels is manufactured it's how it's manufactured. I've been using Penn reels for a while they work and catch fish but they loss their smoothness in a shot time of use and they don't have a pleasant feel when they do, they buzz throb and vibrate because the gears are cheap and their reels are built with a flawed design. Good Pros & Cons Video Very enlightening, I just wanted to give you some input regarding the make up of Penn reels from my past 9 years of using & repairing them...

    I have Penn reels Battle Conflict SSV5500 just to name a few these reels are not crafted with good the gears the main and pinion gears don't mess well & grind in all of my Pure Fishing reel models. last winter I bought two CHTII5000 reels Pure Fishing claims that these reels with CNC gears are smooth, they're not ! I sent the reels back to Penn repair between the two reels 8 times and I got them back and these CNC gears grind so bad in the CFTII reels that I deem them unfishable. Two weeks ago I bought a Daiwa BG 4000 and took it out four times and fished it I caught a mess of sea robins, it's late in the season and the bluefish aren't around to give it a real work out. I fished my BG 4000 for four hours each outing throwing tins & plugs and the reel feels as smooth as it was NIB. I saw the breakdown video of the BG 4000 from Tackle Advisors, the pinion gear inside the BG's housing is seated with a ball Bearing and the crosswind gear is seated with a ball bearing and the main gear has to rods inside the housing to reinforce the main gear, the BG 4000 breakdown video here on You Tub is a must see it shows you how well made this BG reel is. All of Penn's reels pinion gear & main gears ride on bear mettle inside their housings and there gears don't mesh and grind and are unpleasant to fish with. I'm done with Pure Fishing reels using the name tag Penn reels. The new Daiwa BG is a well crafted reel with quality parts, I don't know how Daiwa kept the price down on the BG, but it's worth it's weight in BLACK & GOLD !

    Just a tip, wd40 isnt good to use to clean and lubricate reels. The reason being is that its a water based adhesive that will eventually lead to even more corrosion (hense the W in wd40). From my experience if you arent using oils or grease , you can use an all purpose lubricant that isnt water based. The best thing ive come to realize though even though it isnt as common is lock cleaners. I know it sounds weird but similar to fishing rods locks use bearings and ive found that many lock cleaners use lubricant specifically for bearings that go a long way for fishing rods. Aside from all that loved the video and thanks for the advice as im shopping between all 3 of these 👍🏻.

      Huh? Wd40 stands for “water displacement 40” and contains no water

    • @williamgreene3192
      @williamgreene3192 4 роки тому +1

      Justin - Thanks for Good Comment! I think Island Hooking hit the point in passing, but it's good to re-emphasize that WD 40 is good for cleaning out old stuff & grease, but is NOT a lubricant - it seems to be only useful like penetrating oil. Once you use WD 40 for a clean, it's important to wipe it all out, and then use NEW reel grease & oil that's meant for the job.

      To clean out metal case reels try kerosene but if you use it on graphite reels dont let it get on the writing on the outside but it will be super clean and dissolves all the old grease inside i use a small paint brush to scub away the build up and soak the bearings in kero also hope this helps some one .

    Your very right the difference in the grease is that the Daiwa grease is animal based and Penn is not it's asphalt based the animal base solidifies like butter and sticks with age no use at all ! I learned this with engineering video tape machines years ago.

      Corrosion x both grease and oil. If you want to go a bit farther the reel x is specific to reel care. Pretty much the best stuff you can get a hold of out there.

      Penn grease and oil the best out there? lol. they dry up the quickest and turn to clay. use Shimano brand on Shimano reels,daiwa brand on Daiwa reels and for penn can go quantum hot sauce,reel-x,reel butter, or corrosion x.anything is pretty much better than Penn reel/grease

      Chris Horton baseball I used superlube, the synthetic stuff with micronized teflon. It works great in all my reels, and the base oil doesn't dry out. Napa and a few other places sell a small tube that works for 30+ rebuilds.

    Corroded seriously. Dude I have had a penn battle 2 and a penn fierce 2 for 2 years. I wash them down with fresh water after every use and I have had no issues. One of my fierce 2's I used for 1 whole year and didn't wash down or anything. 2 years later and it still works like a champ. Who did you order from. I think you must have got a knock off. By the way I live in Okinawa where corrosion/rust are ridiculous. Biased review in my opinion.

  • @ChiefToad
    @ChiefToad 6 років тому +3

    Main weakness of cheaper Penn reels is the gearing. Firstly the gears are too small and sloppy(less tight tolerance) for the ratios. And secondly, and most notably, the quality of the material they use in the main gear is pretty bad. Some sort of crappy pot metal. Wears too quickly and very susceptible to the salt. They don't offer you a decent main gear until north of $150 price point. I still use them however, and am quite happy with the spinfisher and battle line otherwise. I think you get a better gear starting with the clash!? Gears aren't expensive to switch out, which is what I do once a season. I also use corrosion x grease and oil liberally on all my stuff to help fight the salt. First thing I do after I have initially tested a reel is to open if up and do a full lube service on it. From the bearings to the ar clutch. I hate to say it, but the BG is just a superior reel in so many ways versus almost everything else in it's price point.(Except maybe a tsunami shield, but I don't own one of those.)

    • @tunanorth
      @tunanorth 6 років тому

      Penn does offer an upgrade to the "C-n-C machined" gearing from the more expensive models that will fit the SSV Spinfishers, they do cost more, but next time you are replacing the gears anyway, possibly try ordering the upgraded gears instead.

    • @ChiefToad

    Been using penn for almost 15 years. Bait casters, spin casters. Never had an issue. I a bait caster I have never even regreased or replaced any parts in over 10 years. I’m loyal to companies that are loyal to making great parts.
    I owned a couple of Daiwa’s cheaper models that were decent. But when I want to go for longevity. I know someone who bought a Daiwa Dg and says he looses rigs once in a while because the cheap made bale closes mid-cast. He said he has lost over a $1oo in lures and redfish leaders. He switched brands for that one issue alone.
