I rooted some figs this summer and planted them in ground in beginning of fall (September) , do u think they need any winter protection as they are young here in zone 8b in Georgia? I dont know the variety as it was cutting from a friend and she said yellow anf brown figs, thats what they call here in South.
I have 5 small trees in 5 gallon pails I took as cuttings from my main fig tree that I've always kept indoors. I'm in Western NYS, so I'm going to try and keep them in my unheated garage and prep them as you have instructed. We'll see if they survive--gardening is always a gamble, but it helps to get knowledge from someone who knows what they're doing. Thanks so much for the info-this video and your recent pruning video have helped a great deal!
Question Ross: I had my bucket figs in the garage since the leaves dropped a couple months ago. Today we had a major winter storm in MN and I scrambled to get them in the basement crawl space. Garage has been 30-40, but today it was in the 20s. When I picked up the buckets to move inside they felt frozen. Did I freeze the buckets and kill my trees, or can they take it and be ok? Thanks for all the shared knowledge. Happy holidays!
Your climate is way warmer than it used to be. Was 7a. Probably 7b global warming days. I live in ct in 6b and past 5 years have been really mild. More like a 7a ct global warming days. My wife is Vice President of CNLA board in ct. and in 15/20 years our climate will be at what north Florida is now.
Just moved my fig inside too. Any advice on pruning pot grown mature trees with not brilliant form Ross? Mine has a Y shaped trunk but growth has been very horizontal as I didn’t stake it when it was younger. Want to encourage more upright growth from the base of these branches to and achieve a better form.
@@RossRaddi Not really, the wood is probably about 7 years old. One of the Y scaffolds is pretty horizontal too. Didn’t know whether cutting them back quite hard to try and stimulate new growth might be an option?
Will it always stay in pots and never go in ground?
Is that heater solar powered?

Can you bend the Y?

If your trees wake up in a basement a 1000w MH grow-light setup isn't crazy expensive in comparison to replacing a few potted-trees.
Where did you get your greenhouse at??
Harbor freight
I’m putting my plants in my basement, in the darkest, coolest area, how cool should it be for them? Don’t think I can get cooler than 60.
60 is no good.
Really you want them under 50.
