Excited for a vegan video! I’m a vegan (10 years) and spend £75-£100 a month for all my food (3 meals a day + snacks) all from Tesco. £20 of that is tofu/tempeh/seitan usually and the rest is whole foods (grains, legumes, vegetables, fruit) + some 85% dark chocolate (a bar a week) as it’s my favourite! Super easy, super cheap and super healthy. I aim for 100g protein a day without supplements and I almost always hit that 💪🏻 since people usually query if I get enough…. P.S we have the same lamp! Just discovered your channel a few hours ago and have been binge watching ever since🤣! And I was SOOO happy when I saw you had a vegan series! I have been vegan now for 4 & a half years. Never in a million years would I have ever imagined I'd one day become plant-based, especially after growing up on a farm for 18 years and eating meat & dairy practically every day of my life! I literally used to scoff at vegetarian options on a menu in a restaurant and always opt for a meat dish!! 5 years ago I started cutting meat out of my shopping budget to save money, then it gradually turned into eliminating all animal products. My skin has never been better, I feel healthier, less weighed down after a big meal, I spend less on groceries, it's better for the planet, obviously better for the animals and my passion & experimentation in the kitchen has actually expanded way more since being vegan than ever before! You barely ever read up (or think) to consume animal products when you're feeling run down or your skin is rubbish or you need perking up - you think of fruit & veg and clean healthy food (hence they are more nutrious) and that was a light bulb moment for me only recently... If you research nutrient-dense food packed with minerals and body-benefits, it's never meat eggs or dairy listed, it's plant-based foods 🙌 Thanks for another great video, and sad to see you're stopping your channel when I've only just discovered you but I wish you all the best🥲 💚🌱
I have been plant based for 25 years for health reasons - I had chronic fatigue syndrome and the doctors had no answers for me - but I found an alternative health practitioner who helped me so much - in 6 weeks of applying the nutritional advice she gave me my energy came back and I haven't looked back since. I loved cheese - that was hard to give up - but there are ways around it. Nutritional yeast lends a cheesy flavor to food. I also make cream cheese using cashew nuts on occasion.
Thought you was amazing on the tv show. Well done!! 🥰 I was raised vegetarian and I guess have been vegan for the last 40 years mainly for the animals. I try not make any judgement on what other people eat as we are all on our own journey. If a recipe calls for eggs I usually use flax egg which is just flax seed and water. The channel I suggested below will give you so much useful information. Hope you're both having a relaxing weekend! 🥰
Hi. I recently found a good hack on how to open the lids on impossible to open jars. It has worked every time, so please try it. Basically, you use the bottle opener on an old-fashioned tin opener. Just put it on the lid of the jar pull (it may pop but not always), the lid loosens and you can easily open the jar. Lol, it's been a life changer for me.
Omnivore but plant based (& UPF free) here! I just LOVE plants and obsessed with legumes which are super cheap and tick the fibre and protein boxes. Chickpea curry, hummus and aquafaba mayo (with leftover oil from jar of artichoke hearts) being made tomorrow with my chickpeas. When cooking dried pulses i like to cook loads and portion them up in freezer bags (about a cup in each). Consider adding a box of small ziplock bags next time you are in Lidl; super handy for portioning stuff in the freezer instead of freezing packets of meat etc and they are sturdy enough to wash and reuse endlessly (although I always use the same bags for raw meat). Budget cooking wise I would also keep your freezer stocked with bags of veg (peas, beans, broad beans and sweetcorn plus carrots, broc, cauli and spinach). I also have bags of chopped parsley and coriander (usually yellow stickered) and grated ends of hard cheeses. Having a well-stocked freezer makes budget cooking (and cooking for one) really simple and makes the freezer run more efficiently. Don't forget to dry out any remains of those lemons and limes and blitz them to a powder for using in lieu of zests or as a seasoning!
Hope you feel better soon Rechenda. My mum always used dried pulses amd would soak them overnight. Such a great money saver. I look back now, and it makes soo much sense. 😊

I have been vegan 30yrs l was vegetarian 14yrs befor that. I did it first for animals but also for environmental resons and world hunger. I don't eat a lot of meat substitutes as they can be expensive and l don't like the texture of some.l eat pulses, nuts tofu and tempeh. When l first went vegan in 1994 there was only soya milk and the vegan cheese was gross. Todays vegan cheese is much improved.Only one sort of choclate bar was avalible now there are lots. It is now easier to buy vegan toiletries and cleaning products. Vegan shoes are easier to get now. It is much easier today to live vegan. . .
So sorry you’re feeling run down, hope you get better soon. Delighted that Jack is back to his usual self, why wouldnt you spend out to make sure he was ok - what a bizzare comment from that other person! I have been vegan for a bit of over three years… best decision ever - way healthier and you actually can save money with it. Have a lovely weekend and a big kiss for Jack ❤️🩹
Wishing you well! So happy you are doing a vegan week! A great week to make some quinoa crepes/wraps. 100g quinoa, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic or onion powder, teaspoon nutritional yeast. Soak quinoa 6 hours or overnight, wash and drain. Then blend with all ingredients until smooth, about 1 min, cook in pan on high heat, flip only when top is dry and has bubble! Store in fridge or freeze. I normally add coco nibs to cereal or yoghurt!
You are fearless with food creativity and it is so fun to watch. Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Are those chickpeas or soybeans? Feel better soon! Rest up..
Oh, I’m crazy about pulses, lentils etc! I made a vegan curry last night using blue peas (Marrowfat peas). It is delicious! I’m not vegan but more vego than meat eater. Hope your vegan week goes really well Rechenda! So glad Jack is recovering and back to his happy self! Hope your hair grows back soon! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Hi Rechenda great to see you again. Take care if your chest makes you feel weak see a doctor after about three days. If you need to open a jar hit the edge of the lid a few times with the edge of a knife it dents the metal slightly and breaks the seal should open then! Fab to see you on telly - joined Channel 5 especially. God bless x
I'm looking forward to your vegan challenge. I eat 95% plant based for the animals, the environment, and my budget. If you continue to eat pulses regularly, a pressure cooker is a great piece of equipment. I've seen them free occasionally on my 'Buy Nothing' gifting Facebook page. Get well soon! ❤
Hi Rechenda! I'm so happy that Jack is better!! Your haircut is adorable! I'm a bit wonky when it comes to diet. I was pescatarian before having a food sensitivity test. Now I'm a vegan who still eats fish. I had to cut out dairy and yeast. We eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Beans are a major protein source for me. I put dried beans in a crockpot to cook overnight. Easy and no soaking. Red lentils, carrots and curry powder make an excellent soup. My husband still eats meat but has cut back on it dramatically. He eats a lot of cage-free eggs. Keep up the healthy eating!! Have a great week. -Amanda in Florida
Hey, love watching your videos. I have to be cows milk free so tend to accidentally do vegan food most of the time. Tend to find good recipes on pinch of nom or good food. Prefer to eat actual veggies, than the fake meat, which actually makes for a cheaper food shop too
The person who questioned you spending money on getting Jack better obviously doesn't have pets! My puss cat is my world, his needs come first, if he's happy then so am I ❤ plus a £102 vet bill is a bargain!! Vet bills for my boy have cost me over £3k over the last 2 years 😳 but he is worth every penny ❤ I'm glad Jack is feeling better ❤
Im so happy jack is on the mend. In jan this year we had a 2k vet bill. I would happily starve to make sure my animals are well. They mean more to me than any human. Me and all my family are vegan for the past 7 years. Our idea is you cant love animals as much as we do and eat them and wear them. The sainsburys that was on your show - the one your friend goes to in preston is where we do our shopping. We travel 20 miles every fri to do our shopping there as its got nice vegan products in. Get well soon, Rachenda xx
Great video as always Rechenda and so glad that Beanie is a bit more like himself but sorry to hear you're not too good. I take 3 different supplements daily and they're from Lidl, so maybe something like that may help?
LOVE THE VEGAN-ING! It's the way to go for health and happniess and it's cheaper. Pulses, lentils, beans, all so good. When I'm mega skint you can get the VERY cheap Baked Beans from Lidl etc and rinse off the sauce and you've got a tin of haricot beans for less than half the price of buying plain haricots. Throw them into any soup or sauce before blending to add protein and creaminess.
So sorry to hear you have a lurgy. Ginger, honey and lemon hot water or peppermint leaf tea are both good for chesty coughs. Indian tonic water and curries are also good for lurgies and will boost yourvimmune system. A fab video. ❤
@@TheBudgetFoodie you're very welcome. The Bang-Bang cauliflower looked delish, it is one of my favourites. I used to be vegan but I have hypothyroidism and ended up really unwell. These days I eat some fish, eggs and dairy products but I still eat a lot of vegan food because I really enjoy it. The most important thing is to cook from scratch as much as possible and avoid processed foods and additives, and eat food that you enjoy and makes you feel healthy. Get well soon. 💖

Peel garlic by slicing off the root end, giving the clove a twist while holding a little way down from the top, make sure the skin has split vertically, then gently squeeze and pull up on the top, garlic peeled the easy way :)
Hi Lovely! Glad to hear Jack is much better! Can I ask where you got your storage jars that you put your rice and dried lentils etc … can wait to see this next challenge.
Thank you Rechenda I'm so glad beautiful Jack is better and worth every penny my little dog cost a fortune in her life but I would give anything to have her back ....I hope you feel a bit better today but you should get some anti Biotic's to clear up a chest infection I know garlic is a natural anti biotic so will help. I am a pescetarian I think being a vegan is a hard challenge your so limited to what you can eat but your first meal looked good well done and I look forward to the rest of your vlog's I saw you on T.V you came across so good your a natural in front of the camera just like you are on your channel so don't ever change and start staging it all as it would spoil your unique style .sending you lots of healing energy Rechenda .xx
Just a little tip...store fruit and veg in glass jars they last much longer. Any leafy greens store them in a good Tupperware with either paper.towel or cloth napkin and flip the container upside-down in the fridge. This also works well for cucumbers chop them in coins or peppers halved and deseeded. I keep fresh fruit and veg for weeks.
I went vegan about 7 years ago, I dont like the taste of dairy and I dont like the texture of most meats. Never ate fish or honey so when my friend went vegan I did as well. For me it feels normal. Later on I learned about the health and environmental side and oh well thats a bonus! Funny thing is tht I finally like things like whipcream as it turns out I realy hate the taste of cow-dairy LOL. I cnt inmagine eating any sort of meat ever again but live and let live ;)
Tips from a fellow electric car owner - it's been a learning curve! I recommend finding charging points that are either 22kw or 50kw because they are much faster to charge - the 7kw will take hours. See if there are any Instavolt stations near you x

Super excited to see you doing a vegan video. I’m plant based, so I cook and eat vegan, but have been know to occasionally finish a bit of croissant or cake that my kid has left rather than putting in the bin. That said I won’t eat any kind of meat or fish, but that’s no judgement on anyone, my husband and kids are omnivores. I came to it through health and lifestyle doctors like Dr Michael Greger. I only found you recently but I do like your videos, very helpful and inspiring 🐈⬛😊
I saw the vegan challenge and came running. I'm vegan for the animals, the planet & my own health. I don't feel like I miss anything and i love being creative with my cooking
Nice to see you and claire from youtube on tv the other night...as for vets bills they are extortionate,it costs 60 quid just for consultation..thing is vets know we will pay whatever it takes to make our pet better, its a shame we also pay for our vets mistakes costing 100s in cheap pharmaceuticals for misdiagnosis.

If you fill your sink with hit soapy water when you start preparing your meals you can put your dishes and pots in as you go to soak. You will be more inclined to wash up as you go or at least stuff will be more or less clean when you do get around to washing up.
I have Pcos & Type 2 Diabeties so this year I'm turning more towards vegetarian & vegan nutrition. I want to still have a few days a month where I eat meat, however I'm also a big fish lover so I can compromise with being in the middle with Vegetarianism. Slowly though I've been switching & thanks immensely to finding you have fallen in love again with being creative with using things up & eating less meat overall :) 😊
I think it’s so important to listen to our bodies in the moment about food needs. I have so many medical issues improved by having a reasonably clean diet and am in much better shape than any doctors expected me to be by this point in my 30s after the childhood I had. I prefer a plant based diet for myself, which means I currently do eat everything, but once I use up some of the items in my home I won’t be purchasing them as often and will most likely consider myself flexitarian going forward. Some of my medical issues can interfere with my body actually absorbing nutritional needs which is why I can’t restrict too much further.
Hi Rechenda and Beanie, good news on his majesty 🖤 what a bizarre comment about the vet bill, some funny folk about 😮 excited you are doing a vegan challenge, I love being vegan but appreciate it's not for all. I hope you are feeling better soon 💗😊
I hope you’ll feel better soon. You can use the aqua faba from the chickpeas as an egg replacer (no waste) and you can fry in water or vegetable stock to replace the lard. Good luck with your vegan challenge.
Yes, you need to soak for 12 hours (chickpeas). Rinse and drain. Place in pan with plenty of fresh water and cook. It works out cheaper to cook but obviously longer than opening a tin of chickpeas!

Nice topic, I eat 85% vegan, (no egg, sometimes fish and sometimes cheese) dr Neil bannard talks about the benefits in terms of hormones (menopause) no fat 2.5%, soy beans and plant-based, further soy yogurt with musli, sourdough bread with beans, evening salad with tofu, lots of fruit and vegetables and also a lot of protein. I make the chickpeas by soaking them, cooking them and then nice and thinly sliced with paprika and salt, oil and pepper, delicious, keeps good in the fridge for a few days, gr Sigrid

When l first went vegan in 1994 there was only soya milk and the vegan cheese was gross. Todays vegan cheese is much improved.Only one sort of
choclate bar was avalible now there are lots. It is now easier to buy vegan toiletries and cleaning products. Vegan shoes are easier to get now. It is much easier today to live vegan.

Yay love your vegan story xxx
Been vegan for 8 years Couldn;t be easier.
I love bruschetta! I’ve put basil on it before but never coriander, so I’m looking forward to trying that.
It’s all I had but I enjoyed it! Xx
So sorry you’re feeling run down, hope you get better soon. Delighted that Jack is back to his usual self, why wouldnt you spend out to make sure he was ok - what a bizzare comment from that other person!
Didn't watched that programme (forgot, soz) but will catch it up on My5 tomorrow.
Thanks for another fab video 😊
Thanks Sue xx exactly I love my cat so much xx
I have been vegan for a bit of over three years… best decision ever - way healthier and you actually can save money with it. Have a lovely weekend and a big kiss for Jack ❤️🩹
Fabulous xx
Sounds absolutely yummy!
You are fearless with food creativity and it is so fun to watch. Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Are those chickpeas or soybeans? Feel better soon! Rest up..
Oh they might be soy beans! X
Sounds yummy hope my hair grows back soon too xx
@@TheBudgetFoodie 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Try a slight pry with a butter knife under the edge of the olives. Should open right up after that!
Ahhhh!
I saw that message ❣️ SO glad it worked out.
Glad Jack's better, hope you feel better soon. Loads of love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️
Thanks melany xx here’s the link by the way www.channel5.com/show/supermarket-prices-are-we-being-ripped-off

Feel like we're still being sanctioned 😢...
God bless x
Oh thank you I hope you enjoyed the show x thanks for the lid tip
I'm looking forward to your vegan challenge. I eat 95% plant based for the animals, the environment, and my budget. If you continue to eat pulses regularly, a pressure cooker is a great piece of equipment. I've seen them free occasionally on my 'Buy Nothing' gifting Facebook page. Get well soon! ❤
Sounds good! Thank you xxx
I am so happy to see you, glad Jack is ok. I am sorry you are not feeling well, you've been through alot. Hope you have a good rest. ❤
Thank you! You too! I need a good rest xx
Bruschetta looks amazing!
That sounds amazing Amanda! X
Hey, love watching your videos. I have to be cows milk free so tend to accidentally do vegan food most of the time. Tend to find good recipes on pinch of nom or good food. Prefer to eat actual veggies, than the fake meat, which actually makes for a cheaper food shop too
Yes exactly I’m so on board with this x
The person who questioned you spending money on getting Jack better obviously doesn't have pets!
My puss cat is my world, his needs come first, if he's happy then so am I ❤ plus a £102 vet bill is a bargain!! Vet bills for my boy have cost me over £3k over the last 2 years 😳 but he is worth every penny ❤ I'm glad Jack is feeling better ❤
Yes exactly! D
Rechenda you are brilliant and your so funny and your videos are always a joy to watch. ♥️♥️👍👍
Thank you so much!
Thanks Christine glad I am not the only one that really loves their fur babies xx
When I first started watching you, you were making more plant based food and I loved that content!
Ah yeah I was! Full circle xx
Great video as always Rechenda and so glad that Beanie is a bit more like himself but sorry to hear you're not too good. I take 3 different supplements daily and they're from Lidl, so maybe something like that may help?
Will investigate xx
LOVE THE VEGAN-ING! It's the way to go for health and happniess and it's cheaper. Pulses, lentils, beans, all so good. When I'm mega skint you can get the VERY cheap Baked Beans from Lidl etc and rinse off the sauce and you've got a tin of haricot beans for less than half the price of buying plain haricots. Throw them into any soup or sauce before blending to add protein and creaminess.
Oh wow I love that tip xxx
So sorry to hear you have a lurgy. Ginger, honey and lemon hot water or peppermint leaf tea are both good for chesty coughs. Indian tonic water and curries are also good for lurgies and will boost yourvimmune system. A fab video. ❤
Thank you cat x
@@TheBudgetFoodie you're very welcome. The Bang-Bang cauliflower looked delish, it is one of my favourites. I used to be vegan but I have hypothyroidism and ended up really unwell. These days I eat some fish, eggs and dairy products but I still eat a lot of vegan food because I really enjoy it. The most important thing is to cook from scratch as much as possible and avoid processed foods and additives, and eat food that you enjoy and makes you feel healthy. Get well soon. 💖
Same priorities with spending 💰 on 😺 and her health. Word to the 🦉 wise: if You will be starting any of your meal with fresh green veggie you will stay full and healthy for longer! Absolutely love everything about You and your channel ❤️
Thank you! X green juice will try x
I eat quite lot of vegan food cos I am lactose intolerant. I also eat meat at times tho mainly chicken as it is so expensive now. I always buy dried pulses, rather than tinned as they are cheaper.
Ah yes didn’t even mention prices of meat good point! X
I've been vegan for about 8 years and love to do it on a budget. I absolutely love your videos (no matter the content), its like hanging out with a friend. hope you feel better soon ❤
Aww thank you sweetie xx
Another fab vlog. Sorry I missed you on tv is it on catch up somewhere? Been vegetarian and now vegan 35 years all together. Could never go back. 100% cut back on myself for my pets 🐾 dried chickpeas are the best. I soak them for about an hour then bring to the boil & simmer till softened. Easy to roast them or make houmous 🌱 hope you feel better soon 💞
You should be able to watch it here xx www.channel5.com/show/supermarket-prices-are-we-being-ripped-off
Hey caught up on the show you were amazing really enjoyed it 💞
The vegan cheese in your fridge is very good on toast or grated onto a baked potato. Hope you try it.
I might do! X
Fantastic in a cheese sauce👍
@@amandac9210 Indeed it is.

They were from Morrisons - Officially they were cookie jars x
@@TheBudgetFoodie ah ! Cookie jars ! I have 2 they over 20 years old and couldn’t remember were I got them lol thanks for getting back to me.

Yay hello vegan lovely x
Glad the cat is better. Safe driving in the new wheels, get well soon, the body knows what it needs to eat at times.
So true x
Not had bang bang cauliflower but looks delicious. Have previously made a curry using cauliflower.
It was tasty
I eat a bit of vegan food & milk sometimes make my own oat milk but I’m not a vegan but I’m all for it. 😊
Lovely xx
You can buy peppers in a glass jar and you get more peppers than buying fresh. Love your videos, you are an inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
Great tip!
That bang bang cauliflower looks amazing!
Thank you! X
I went Lidl yesterday n got those lemon n limes. Lemon is nice in hot water.
Very soothing x

They didn’t pay me much but I’m hoping world fame awaits 😂
Yes I love my cat xx dosing up with garlic x
Just a little tip...store fruit and veg in glass jars they last much longer. Any leafy greens store them in a good Tupperware with either paper.towel or cloth napkin and flip the container upside-down in the fridge. This also works well for cucumbers chop them in coins or peppers halved and deseeded. I keep fresh fruit and veg for weeks.
Oooh fAB tip! X
Ah! Super interesting
Tips from a fellow electric car owner - it's been a learning curve! I recommend finding charging points that are either 22kw or 50kw because they are much faster to charge - the 7kw will take hours. See if there are any Instavolt stations near you x
Can I charge my little car on those faster chargers tho? Xx
@@TheBudgetFoodie it looked like you use a CCS connection so I think so - maybe check your manual or Mr Google to be sure! Hopefully you can because it's a game changer! ☺️
Awww lovely, hope you are feeling better soon 🩷 that cauliflower dinner looked delicious
It was soooo tasty x
Nice to know that Jack is recovering Okay 👍
I make lots of lentil soup and sauces, very tasty and both freeze well ✔️
Try a stovetop veggie sauce to use over pasta or a jacket potato 🥔
Good video 🇦🇺
Sounds great!
Ps you can do loads of thing without any kind of oil, I only use it for pancakes and water fry everything else 😊
Welcome lovely Alice to the channel xx
I saw the vegan challenge and came running. I'm vegan for the animals, the planet & my own health. I don't feel like I miss anything and i love being creative with my cooking
I’m heading that way very quickly
Nice to see you and claire from youtube on tv the other night...as for vets bills they are extortionate,it costs 60 quid just for consultation..thing is vets know we will pay whatever it takes to make our pet better, its a shame we also pay for our vets mistakes costing 100s in cheap pharmaceuticals for misdiagnosis.
Indeed xxx
Thoroughly enjoy your videos❤ The poor kid at 13.47😮
Thank you x ah yes I saw :(

If you fill your sink with hit soapy water when you start preparing your meals you can put your dishes and pots in as you go to soak. You will be more inclined to wash up as you go or at least stuff will be more or less clean when you do get around to washing up.
Great tip!
That sounds great x love fish also
I think it’s so important to listen to our bodies in the moment about food needs.
It’s so true xx our bodies know x
Recently, I've been obsessed with Korean kimchi pickled cucumber, great stuff 😊 refreshing and gets me to eat veg
Omg I need this lol sounds fab x
Prefer the term whole food plant based or flexatarian cus you can still have butter and eggs. Pretty much don't eat meat.
Ahhh x
I'm glad Jack is better, and you get to feelings better too

Yes, you need to soak for 12 hours (chickpeas). Rinse and drain. Place in pan with plenty of fresh water and cook. It works out cheaper to cook but obviously longer than opening a tin of chickpeas!
Yes soo long

This all sounds so tasty xx
Oh my word, you said the camera was “ on the huh” I haven’t heard that since my mum died 11 years ago! She came from North Norfolk and had loads of words like that. I’ll have to start using that again now you’ve reminded me and try to remember other things she said. Have you heard of “ Pot hooks” said when annoyed? As in “Oh Pot hooks to the flipping thing!” Love your stuff.xx
