At the beginning of this video I was like: "Wow Klaus and Lucas would be good names for twin boys."
At the middle I was like: "lol no."

So way back when I was in middle school, we had a list of novels to choose from to read over the summer and the Notebook was on that list. It definitely wasn't something I should've read at the time, but there was something so amazing about it when I usually hated reading after coming from a preppy school that forced me to so often.
It felt like a dark escapism, a taboo that made me feel terrified, uncomfortable, depressed, but somehow excited as well. The first novel alone is striking to me all these years later and it's incredibly surprising to me that the novel that stuck with me the most would go on to inspire the RPG that stuck with me the most...

I just finished Undertale for the first time this past Novemeber! I can't wait to read Clyde Mandelin's book about its localization into Japanese, which comes out this month. I will very likely make a Dark Aspects about the game later this year, and when I do I'll be sure to take my time to get it just right!

@@ThaneGaming I doubt anyone could do a full Dark Aspects as we know so little about a lot of the unused content (Like the Mystery Man, his Followers and Gaster (who we all assume is the same as Mystery Man)).

Damn, all three endings are bleak as hell. I personally hope Klaus in "The Third Lie" eventually realizes that killing himself won't do any good and actually gets the help he desperately needs, but maybe that's just wishful thinking...

Hey Thane, what do you think Itoi could’ve meant when he said he wanted to “betray the player”? You did mention a similar event with Leder’s speech, but seeing as it’s still in the game, it likely wasn’t the scenario he was referring to (assuming The Notebook was in fact his inspiration for the betrayal).
My thoughts were that it has to do with Lucas (from the novel) using the alias Klaus, and how it may have played into the game’s final battle. What if the line of text “His face looked just like Lucas’s”, referring to Claus removing his helmet, was supposed to be taken more literally? It actually _was_ Lucas, and the player was controlling a delusional Claus the whole time.

    • @ThaneGaming
      @ThaneGaming  Рік тому +5

It seems that's the most likely case, as I do think The Notebook trilogy could have easily been the source of his fixation on a "dirty" scenario intended to upset & disappoint players. The way he describes his vision makes me feel that he wanted to go beyond "betraying" the player's expectations and "betray" them on an emotional level with an unreliable narrator, like Ágota Kristóf did with her sequel stories.
Itoi revealing that the player's been controlling the other twin this whole time at the climax of the game would have certainly made me react similarly to The Third Lie's ending, which seems to be a theme with his inspirations (much like using Giygas to emulate the trauma he felt after viewing that scene from The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty). Itoi is very introspective and wants others to feel the same strong emotions he felt with media that deeply resonated with him, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to recreate The Third Lie's impact with a similar twist! That's a great observation you made about the line “His face looked just like Lucas's". Great question, thanks for asking it 😁

I wonder what other creative projects he would've taken up instead in that time--maybe novel writing? He did collaborate with Haruki Murakami by writing short stories for Let's Meet in a Dream...

@@ThaneGaming Well, the Pigmask army kinda resembles the Empire - a big modernized military. This plays into the nature vs technology theme.
The helmet of the Pigmask suit resembles Darth Vader’s helmet; in fact, the Colonels with their capes further resemble Vader. A Pigmask colonel sorta looks like a Pig Darth Vader, except white instead of black.
The main link to Star Wars is the Masked Man, who wields what looks like an orange lightsaber. Claus and Anakin were both found ina near-death state by Porky or his army and the Emperor respectively, and were given a new cybernetically enhanced body and made to be servants of their respective masters. They are thus both cyborgs with cool masks and lightsabers, powerful in PSI/the Force and they are both forced to do the bidding of somebody in charge of a militaristic dictatorship. They are both also family members of the main character, Vader is Luke’s father and the Masked man is Lucas’ brother. Both have a similar death, being offed by a lightning attack, Vader dying to Palpatine’s sith lightning and Claus dying to his own bolt of electricity. They pass away in the hands of their respective main characters.
Porky is similar to Emperor Palpatine in the ways already mentioned, but due to time travel, Porky’s body became very very old, and while Palpatine isn’t extremely old like Porky, he still looks like an ugly old man.
Lucas and Luke Skywalker, the protagonists of the respective game/movies, have a very similar name, Luke and Lucas can even be considered the same name.
You could draw a parallel between Thunder Tower and the Death Star, with both serving a similar purpose, that being to intimidate subjects and crush opposition. The too of Thunder Tower also happens to be a huge sphere.
So, as you can see, there is certainly a possibility of inspiration. While many of these similarities are quite minor, when there are a lot of coincidences, a connection becomes probable. I think this could make for a decent idea for a video.
