- Hello Potters! In this video I'll show you how to apply iron wash to enhance texture on the surface of your pottery. Something to remember about this technique is that iron reacts differently to different glazes. Results can vary widely based on what glazes you are using in combination with the iron and how you are applying your glaze. Consider doing tests on tiles or sample pots so you can see how the iron reacts with YOUR glazes before you begin using it on your main pieces. Thanks for watching!
NOTE oof, I forgot to mention something important. This process is for bisque ware! After your pot has had its first firing and before you apply glaze is the stage in which an iron wash will work best.
Are you able to show the finished glazed product ? Interested in seeing the final effect
Hello Anne! Yes! There is a video showing the final project here:

I found some promising results that I am continuing to work with. Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much!I wonder if I could use red iron oxide on greenware and apply over underglazes?
Hi! I have never tried using iron wash over underglaze but it would be interesting to experiment with that. Would you wipe the surface like I show here or just paint it on? What is your desired effect? I'm so interested to know what you're working on! Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
@potteryplus Thanks for your kind response!I actually applied a few layers of underglaze on top of iron oxide. I'm working on small tiles and they are waiting to be bisque fired. Its an experiment for sure!
hi thanks for the informative video! do you mix the iron oxide with water? and if so how much do you put per red oxide powder?
Hey Tiffany! Thanks for watching! Yes! You would mix the red iron oxide (powder) with water to the thickness you want. I usually add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dry RIO to 8 ounces of water for my wash, but that is my preference. You have to find the ratio that you like! Does this help? Typically you're looking for the application to look like reddish-brown watercolor paint.
Are you doing that on bisque ware or bone dry pottery?
Hey Laura! Thanks for watching! This is on bisque ware. Hope this helps!
can you use amoco potters choice glazes such as emerald falls?
Yes! You could use almost any glaze over an iron wash. It has different effects under different glazes but it is a very safe, stable material. It shouldn't cause any problems. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
