Introduction to Cones (for Beginners)

Have you heard folks in the pottery studio using the term "cones" and have no idea what they're talking about? Pottery Tutorial- Trimming a Foot on a Large Bowl
Переглядів 83811 місяців тому
Welcome back! We've made trimming videos before, but this one is great because it's on a larger piece so you can really see how to carve out a nice, defined foot. When you're trimming, remember the clay needs to be leather-hard for the best results. We are working with a bowl here. So if you have a leather-hard bowl waiting to be trimmed, sit down at your wheel and follow along with us! We love...
Pottery Tutorial - How to throw a Large Bowl on the Wheel

Hello and welcome back! In this installment we will demonstrate how to throw a large bowl on the wheel. The main difference between throwing a small or medium versus a larger bowl is the techniques you have to use to get it opened. A bowl should always have an angled or rounded interior and the way to create it is by making an angled opening right from the beginning. But that gets challenging w...

    Why were you using curved trimming tool instead of a straight edge clay scraper tool to check the base of the bowl during the foot trimming process? Wouldn't a straight edge tool vs a curved tool to measure the base/foot clearance let you curve the inner base to perfectly match the outer bowl shape?

    To get a good release it helps if the piece is still a little wet. If it’s bone dry already spritz it with water before applying the transfer. Peel them off a little bit at a time and I even peel one side making sure it’s completely transfered and then lay it back down and work from the opposite end so if it doesn’t transfer completely you can keep it lined up until you get it completely off. I also will leave all of the ones on my piece until I’m ready to start peeling to keep from messing them up and I work my way around the piece until I get to the other side. Hope that helps. I love using transfers to make my pieces special 🙂

    Always god to go back to basics, there are so many little things that need to happen and when you do them all together it works a treat and leads to less oops moments later on, I've been doing a class once a week, since forever and every now and then things don't go to plan, last Thursday was my day to hit every bump in the road to project cylinder. So for the last couple of days I've watched videos like this to remind myself of all the parts that are important in their own way but pulling together, no pun intended, when they come together it works in your favour and the start follows through to the end a d a new cylinder shape is born. So your video, beautifully broken down and put back together on the journey upwards was a must watch for me, your show and tell format worked for me. Cant wait to get back to class to try again. I tried and it worked great! Thank you, thank you! I bought some from a shop in Winnipeg. (I am in Canada). These were very thin, like saran wrap & easily folded over itself in the water. I noticed yours are thicker. However the thin works well for concave mugs... diner mugs. Fired at 05 and it worked great with new ceramic (porcelain dishwasher safe mugs) from Amazon. A couple other mugs bought at value village did weird things.. one mugs distorted.. the other, the decal had bubbled.. perhaps a higher temp was needed. I needed to buy MICR ink, pricey, but should last me a long while.

      Gaston! I'm so glad you tried this process and shared your feedback! I have tried the thinner decal paper as well and had the same experience - it bubbled and peeled back. I have wondered if it needs to be fired at a lower temperature or if it reacts differently depending on the glaze. But I can see how the application process would be easier with the thinner material on a more rounded piece. It is fascinating! Thank you for watching and sharing! ❤️

I turn 40 this year so I have many years under my belt. And I still struggle sometimes! I struggle with hard clay, air bubbles, bumping things off center, etc. and all potters do, even with lots of experience. The trick I've learned is to work with the imperfections. With all due respect… your explanation is riddled with big mistakes. Cones measure HEAT-WORK (heat over time). They do not measure or reflect temperature. They are absolutely needed even in modern kilns. Where as the controller panel will tell you top temperature, only a cone can reflect heat work. Ceramics need to be held at particular temperatures for a long enough period of time to allow the necessary chemical changes to occur. I hope you will do more research, learn this topic well, AND THEN do a new and accurate explanation.

    New to pottery, is there a purpose to the very shot choppy brush strokes?

    • @potteryplus
      @potteryplus 10 місяців тому

      Hi Elizabeth! Good question! Usually when applying glaze you want a generous amount for each layer, so painting with short strokes helps me not to pull the glaze across the surface into a thin layer. Also, the surface of the piece at this point is super absorbent, which means the glaze begins to dry as soon as it touches the surface. If I tried to pull the glaze around in long strokes with my brush it would get too dry. Does this help? Thanks for watching!

    Do you wire it off or leave it on?

    • @potteryplus
      @potteryplus 11 місяців тому

      Hi Nikita! Since I am using plaster bats here I do not wire it off. The plaster will pull moisture from the clay and it pops off at about the leather hard stage (usually). But if you were working on a bat that's non-absorbent like plastic, you would leave a little extra at the bottom and wire it off. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
