    Thank you for this video! I’m using my Mom’s old pottery studio for the first time since I was a kid. She passed away 30 years ago and I’ve been researching all the crazy chemicals that she has on the shelves!

    Hi, Jessica from Pacifica Ca again. I love your videos! I love your Go Pro challenges. Thank you for making the effort to make videos. I really love the poppy pods, and would love to see a technique video. Keep up the great work. The weather here is amazing, I'm watching hump back whales spouting as the sun sets on a crystal clear day.

      Hi Jessica. Thanks for your lovely comment. I can do a 'how to make' the poppy heads video - good idea! Can't believe you are whale watching- that's completely amazing- you are so lucky. 🐳

    I know this is old but hope you get this message. I am so appreciative of all your helpful videos. The large unglazed poppy on the table here… was it Copper oxide rubbed back and then left unglazed to get that colour? I love that look. Thanks ❤

      Hiya and thanks for watching. There is a video on the oxiding of the poppy head on the playlist called making sculptural poppy heads on my channel if you search for that. Shows step by step how it was done. Hope that helps 😊

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Appreciate the video. Are all oxides /carbonates food safe and ok to use on mugs/plates?

      Hi Hannah. I wouldn't use on the inside of a piece just in case for food sameness. OK on the outside. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😊

    Morning Sarah. Been revisiting this video as I now have myself some oxides! As you are my go to for advice and you are the font of all pottery knowledge I wonder if you can help? Something I have been wondering, and I can’t find out anywhere, is “can you use oxides on earthenware”? Is this something you have tried perchance? Or is it not recommended? Anita from Dorset

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  10 місяців тому

      Hi Anita. I haven't used oxides on earthenware (because I don't use earthenware) but I can't see why you can't. I haven't heard of not being able to but haven't tried this myself. Thanks for checking out the video again. Glad it was helpful 😊

    Hi! Thanks for the video very useful!
    Can I check with you what happens if you don’t brush off the oxide with the sponge? I’m new with pottery and I’m experimenting with manganese oxide, after that I used underglaze to paint it over, and then brush on glaze. I didn’t brush the oxide off (I didn’t know about that) it did stain a bit the underglaze but I gave it a few coats… now I’m wondering if I’ve ruined my pieces! I’m picking them up next week! 🫣

    Hello from Betty’s Bay - a coastal village an hour or so south east of Cape Town. Thanks for the tutorial on oxides, and especially showing examples and methods of application. You seem to use them on bisque wear followed by just firing, or glazing and firing. When you apply an oxide over glaze, as you alluded to in a couple of the last pieces in the demo, how did you do so? Thanks. (Also there was a lovely large green platter on the table which you didn’t show. Any reason?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  2 роки тому

      Hi Merle and thanks for watching. Great to have you along. I use oxides only on bisque because I find it has a tendency to smug on greenware after the first firing. The platter has a fish motif which I have added copper oxide to and then wiped back. I think there is a smaller platter made in the same way in my Etsy shop- link in description potterycorneratno45. Hope that helps 🙏

    Thanks for the informative presentation of examples! Sorry if I missed it but did you mention what temperature you are firing at and what atmosphere? I am experimenting with oxides and guessing that results will vary depending on these factors. Our studio uses an ash glaze in cone 9 oxidation so my results will probably differ.

      Hello Grace. Thanks for watching. I fire my stoneware to 1230 degrees centigrade in a routine electric kiln. Be interesting to see what results you get. That's the beauty of clay - you never know exactly what you're going to get! Don't forget to subscribe 😉

    Hi there! Just a question about how you layer oxides on top of glazes... Do you layer the oxide on top of the unfired glaze before the second firing?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Рік тому

      Hi Ashleigh - yes, sometimes I put the oxide over the glaze and sometimes under depending on the application. There is a little more on using oxide on the glazing video of the sculptural poppy head playlist on my channel if you'd like to take a look. Gives a bit more about oxide application. Thanks for watching.😊

    Question. You're putting oxide over a glaze then fire again?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Рік тому +1

      Hi Debi - I am applying oxide to a biscuit fired piece and then putting glaze over the top of the oxide and then firing to glaze temperature (1225 degrees centigrade). Hope that helps. 😊

    Thanks for the video- I've been a potter for several years but this is the first year I've created my own studio and am experimenting with more oxide washes and underglazes. Question- if I do an oxide wash on the bottom of my bisque pieces, then wax the bottom and glaze piece will that work? (and then setting them on the kiln shelf will the oxide react and ruin the shelf?) I glaze fire at cone 6. thanks

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Dodie - thanks for watching and commenting. Great to have you along. Oxide on the bottom may stain the kiln shelf. It will burn off and shouldn't stick the piece to the shelf but is may discolour. Suggest you try a small bit and see what happens. I don't worry too much if there is oxide on the bottom but some brands of underglaze will stick. Hope that helps 🙏

  • @louisewatson3129

    Thank you - what do you mean that the copper oxide will stay black if it does not go over a unglazed work? so do you mean you do an under glaze and then do the copper oxide? gosh its so complicated

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  2 роки тому

      Hi Louise. Yes - it is confusing! Copper oxide will turn black if it has no glaze applied over it or under it - if it is glazed over (either with transparent or a colour) it will turn green - like verdigris . Thanks for watching. The poppy head tutorial glazing video explains this further if you'd like to take a look 😀

      @@thepotterycorner and to get the green, is that the glaze that you do right at the end after bisque and then firing? do you mean that final glaze? or a glaze before that

    can you put oxides over any glaze, or just under any glaze, or both?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  2 роки тому

      Hi Laurie. I tend to use oxide under the glaze but there is no reason why you couldn't put over the top. My advice as always is test tiles! Always try your ideas on a test tile before using on a piece you've spent hours making. Thanks for watching again. Hope that's helpful 😊
