This is my #1 on this album. It feels more progressive and textural than the rest of the list. I'm that guy, the kid of the 90s who was brought up on yes, genesis, rush and the modern metal Machine Head, Trivium and Jinjer feels the best of all post NuMetal music of the late 2010s. Heres to more Jinjer for years to come.

One of my favorites from the album, probably because of the traditional vibe from the opening riff, and then that 1st harmony part from Tatiana that is so beautiful.

I may be wrong but for the 'big' drum sound, after recording the drums for the album Vlad showed some actually big drum that he described like 'self-made' or something to that effect. Maybe it's not that thing precisely but who knows. I wonder if the guys read the comments when watching these videos XD maybe they'd answer

I got some Opeth-vibes out of this one too. And a liiitle bit of Trivium I guess.
But again it's Jinjer-Opeth, and Jinjer-Trivium. Like with Flёur on Wallflower it doesn't sound like those bands literally, but still some things that these bands could do, although it would be different if done by them. As for Jinjer-ness, maybe because of how I started listening to them, but Vortex to me is like epitome of Jinjer-ness (previous albums are more Jinjerness in being a 'jigsaw puzzle' of genres, but omg Vortex is so pure to me XD )

  • @TysonGiffordME
    @TysonGiffordME 3 роки тому +3

It will take a lot of listens to really decide, but so far my favorite song on this album is still the first single, Vortex. I just love the progression with no repeating parts, the multiple catchy hooks, the AIC like harmonies (with her own backing tracks), the heavy groove in the middle, and the really low heavy outro.

Love this song, the atmosphere in this one really speaks to me. Also, yes please do a top 10 moments from this album. What I love from your reactions / analysis videos is that you take the time to talk about a lot of the different things which come to your mind as you listen to songs. I find it really refreshing from other channels that I frankly find quite boring most of the time. Another super analysis! U can't simply let us down once, don't you? xD
I was kinda of anxious for your analysis to this song because the simple fact that this, is one of my favorites without any doubt.
.....and i will be anxious till "As I Boil Ice", another "Wallflowers" fav of mine. xD
What i am as well, loving about this album, is the fact that several persons, have different favorites and this is a major compliment to the band.
Paying attention to several comments, in several reaction videos or official Jinjer song's music videos, i already heard/saw people assigning "Colossus", "Copycat", "Mediator", "Disclosure!", "Pearls and Swine", "Sleep or the Righteous", "Wallflower", "As I Boil Ice" as favorites and that amazes me.
Normally, a band have one, two and maybe three acclaimed/"loved by many" tracks by album.
When we reach the point that many people loves or point, different tracks, as favorites, it tells me that we are in fact listening a special thing, a special album.
In general, i love this album but, my very favorites, without any particular order, are: "Disclosure!", "Pearls and Swine", "Sleep of the Righteous" and "As I Boil Ice".
If someone ask me one particular moment of the entire album that is memorable to me, a "WOOOOOWWWWW" moment, i have to select one particular genious moment of "Disclosure" song.
Around 1:40 of the song, till 2:00 something sickening epic occurs, dazzling guitar work and spectacular growl ranges from Tatiana saying "Follow me, follow me, follow me
/ Don't bother me, don't bother me" x2. Sick. Brutal. Genious.

  • @Paulfighteronline

Thanks for another episode of this Wallflowers series, John! 🤘🔥
Sleep of the Righteous. What a song.
The production at the beginning reminds me of church bells actually (maybe something about the announcement of inevitable sleep?).
I do agree with your hangar take later on in the track. Thanks for pointing out Eugene's interesting driving pattern near the end, I hadn't caught that!
Tatiana's versatility shines once again in this track. Her melodic and stylistic choices are something else.
To me this song speaks about the nightmare of a person who wants to help refugees from war-torn countries. The details of the atrocities these people have gone through haunt the helper at night. That's just the vibe I'm getting.
Also, I almost snorted up my tea when you started talking about people who stop watching halfway through the video. The mental image of you running around naked and rubbing shit up the walls had me creasing for a good minute😂

  • @FlashKorten

    Ooooh yeah - great song.
My thoughts went to the ruins of a cathedral in the intro (for sound and atmosphere).
I love how Jinjer comes up with the greatest parts and use them only once.
The part with the pushing bass ('Visions spark before my eyes...') is so damn catchy - but it
work best in between slowing crushingly down to a near stop and the dreamy instrumental part after it
so it is only used there. Once. 'Hit song structure' be damned, this is where it belongs.
My favorite metal guitar riff ever is part of 'Sit stay roll over' from their 'King of everything' album.
Incidentally, the video is shot in a huge, nearly empty warehouse (but it does not sound like it).
The riff is played for only 4 repetitions (as variations A B A B) with vocals all over it leading into the outro.
If you listen to the song, you'll know which riff I'm talking about.
There is a great guitar playthrough video by Roman for that song (and others) as well. All highly recommended.
PS: great memories of the 'British Steel' making of video...
Using Ringo Starrs cutlery drawer for the marching 'Metal Gods' is so inspiredly mundane for such epicness.

My physical CD should arrive in just a couple days so I can rock out with physical media like the 90s kid I am haha! the only thing Jinjer lacks is personal nostalgia because I've only listened for a few years. Excellent analysis. I think you're right that Jinjer does a great job of bringing fresh ideas into their composition and their overall sound. If you like bands that bring something new to metal, I suggest checking out Babymetal. Their composition is also excellent, though it tends to lean more toward paying overt homage to other styles and even other specific bands (e.g. Sepultura with 'In the Name Of' or Dream Theater with 'Tales of the Destinies'). A couple good options for first songs would be Akatsuki live at Budokan Black Night (their live shows are incredible) or the official MV for Megitsune, though you may have to fade or blur the latter since they tend to be strict about copyright on their official videos. Cheers!

Writing this halfway through your review, so apologies, but just picking up on your comment about not being reminded of other bands... I did, it was 'early Jinjer', i.e. The music from "inhale, do not breathe" & "cloud factory", which is more metalcore influenced than progressive and Tati's vocals & melody choices are more similar to this track.
I instantly thought fans who prefer their earlier work would peg this track as their fav for that reason - I'd be interested to know if I'm right..?
I don't tend to listen to metalcore or the more 00's style rocky metal but that's what I got from this.

I get it.. why that was the expression of it being in vast space with metallic, echo and reverb .
Does echo and reverb/ reverberations ? Describing the same action of sound ?

    • @FlashKorten
      @FlashKorten 3 роки тому

Echo (or delay) is an effect that distinctly repeats sounds getting less loud with each repetition,
like an actual echo when you shout in the mountains.
If you clap once with delay, it sounds like: CLAP! CLAP Clap clap ...
The guitar in the intro to Vortex has a beautiful delay.
Reverb (or 'room' sound) simulates the sound of an actual room (or space), like when you shout in a cathedral.
If you clap once with reverb, it sounds like: CLAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap..
Both effects are often used together.
Words like 'metallic' or 'wooden' are often used to describe the sound of these effects as the material
of an actual room's walls affect the sound. A metallic wall will reflect high frequencies much more than
a wooden one or one with tapestries, so a metallic delay reverb sounds brighter. Tiled rooms also have their own characteristics.
You can probably compare the sound of clapping in your bathroom vs. your bedroom for this.
PS: don't actually go around shouting too much :)

Not sure why, but this track doesn’t grab me like most of the others on the album. Granted I haven’t heard it through as many times as others. Theres a guitar riff that repeats later has this brightness that feels out of place to me, or perhaps it’s that Tati’s vocals blow me away more on other tracks. Interestingly I think you head-banged more to this one than the others.

Speaking of nu metal the song Dead Hands Feel No Pain gives me massive Mudvayne vibes with that main riff.

There's one song on this album that gives me Gojira vibes. Its not even the song, its like a little 3 note riff. I can't recall which song at the moment, though.
I can't wait until you get to As I Boil Ice. It may be my favorite on the album.
I do like Sleep Of The Righteous b/c it seems to deal with sleep paralysis which is something I've suffered from a lot for a few years. I haven't had an episode in quite a while, but it used to happen all the time and it was terrifying until I figured out what was happening to me. I'd see shadow figures standing on the other side of the room just looking at me. I'd sometimes see a face of a woman (always a woman), right up in my face, with her mouth wide open like she was screaming in terror...like unnaturally wide open, but making no sounds. It was almost exactly like the scenes from The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. When I saw that scene I couldn't believe what I was seeing b/c it was exactly like what I had experienced years prior. Whoever wrote that scene has experience sleep paralysis before.
Its a hard thing to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it. Just imagine you want to move and you're trying with everything you have, all the will and strength you can muster, but you're locked in. Then pair that with the often seen shadow figures and feeling of a presence in the room with you and its terrifying to experience. As the song describes, you would pray to gods and beings you don't even believe in to make it stop. You would confess to crimes you never committed if that would end it. Tati has definitely experienced it b/c she nailed the feelings and emotions in these lyrics.

Dude, I used to suffer from sleep paralysis for many years when I was quite a heavy drinker of alcohol. It was terrifying. I was never under the influence of alcohol when it happened but rather consumed alcohol regularly in my life in the period of my life that it happened. After quitting the booze for a few years now I haven't had a single occurrence of it. Could be coincidental and I'm not sure why. They were really terrifying. I would wake up and see things in the room too and not be able to move. A dark shadowy figure would be at my side a lot of the time but I could never make out if it was a man or a woman. Just a presence that scared the complete shit out of me!

@@JWSoundworks2 Its amazing that people of all races and nationalities seem to experience the same phenomenon when it comes to sleep paralysis. There's nearly always a shadow figure or at least the feeling of a presence in the room.
I found out that my episodes were related to too much caffeine consumption. I wasn't getting the proper amount of REM sleep. I remember a time in my life where I didn't dream for years. My sleep paralysis got so bad at one point that I could "feel" that it was going to happen as I was trying to fall asleep. So of course knowing it would happen made me not want to sleep, which in turn caused more episodes.
Once I cut back on the caffeine, and started to put more effort into getting comfortable and quiet before bed I haven't had an episode in around 2 years.
As for your cause, I'm not a drinker. I haven't consumed alcohol or any drugs for well over 10 years. When I was drinking I noticed that beer made it impossible for me to sleep. No matter how drunk I was, I couldn't sleep. Liquor, and especially wine...no problems. Out like a light. Something to do with the hops or fermentation process that just doesn't agree with my body.
This song really stuck out to me b/c it references something I'm well versed in, unlike most lyrics.
My favorite lyric from this track is,
"I see its shadow, the blackest black
The widest grin from ear to ear"...That's someone who has experience it before. I don't normally get enthralled with celebrities or musicians, but Tati never fails to impress the hell out of me, as do the other members.

I never had hallucinations, I think. I had severe issues as a kid, often without being able to breath, which was terrifying as I was just laying there, suffocating, until out of sheer panic of dying I was able to lift myself up and take a deep breath. This often came with nightmares though, like being stuck on a garage door on a landfill or similar scenarios. I remember sometimes the dreams sort of echoing / fading into my surroundings though, but that also happens sometimes when I wake up normally. It's probably what causes the hallucinations for some people though. When I had the breathing issues as a kid I sometimes saw my room from outside my body, and then when I got up in panic it happened like 3-5 times over and over, so when I finally was awake for real I still was questioning if I was still dreaming or not.
Later in adulthood it almost always just appears when I have to get up early for a meeting or whatever (I can't work and have sleep issues so I tend to usually sleep in), so it's almost certainly a stress related trigger, or the lack of sleep because I can't fall asleep the night before. Only thing then is that I just can't move though. My body being all heavy since I don't have any control over my muscles yet, but my body sometimes can shift position on its own, like it would when I was properly asleep. I can sometimes with a lot of willpower move one finger for a short moment, which helped back when I was still with my ex, as I could simple yes / no replies.
If it is just that and without the breathing issues then it's quite alright, as long as you know what is going on, so you just wait it out and be bored until you can slowly start to move (usually starts to fade in slowly, so you're feeling pretty exhausted and weak).
