WOO HOO! I made it through this video without crying! That's progress, my friends! ;) So what have you missed about a country or culture when you moved away? If you left Scotland, what are things you'd miss! I'd love to hear all about it! 😁🌞

I was taken away from Scotland when I was 13 and have missed it every day since. It was always my intention to return, but somehow life got in the way of that. But you know what they say...it's never too late. Maybe yet. There's not a day goes by but I pine for home.

Being sworn at as a 'polite' greeting, good-bye or thrown in the middle of any conversation. Malcolm Tucker could really only be Scottish. Or the living history, even as an Atheist, the Abbey at Iona, the landing of Christianity in Scotland is dizzying view into the depths of history.

Sonnie Travels .........When I was 14 (in 1973) we visited family in California for about 5-6 weeks. After about week 4 I did tire of the “Thank you for shopping at Kmart/Sears/Penney’s” phrase, which was of course not said in Edinburgh shops. We visited a Scots club in Los Angles and as I stood in the doorway I was greeted with, “Hey pal, get oot the road”.............it was so refreshing🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I love the degree to which you have attached to Scotland, and express it so well. We’re missing you already :)
The deepest determining factor in Scottishness, I think, is the ‘take no bullshit’, be decent, kind and open whilst you laugh at yourself, and above all share in your humanity, because nobody is any better than any another. But make sure you know what you’re talking about before you sound off! It’s a powerful philosophy that emerges from the Reformation and Enlightenment. It meant that all individuals were educated and could create the conditions for self-advancement. Scotland once had the highest per capita literacy in the world. We have slipped a bit...
But it’s the ‘magic’ that meant that Scots, despite our tiny population, had an impact far beyond these shores. c.f. Arthur Herman, ‘How Scots Invented the Modern World’, 2001

19 of the 56 delegates who signed the American declaration of independence where born in Scotland. Ideas and philosophies born from the Reformation and Enlightenment directly influenced many of our founding fathers. The father of the American navy, John Paul Jones, a Scot. I could go on and on. The very town I live in currently is named after a large land division in your country! If we are a nation built on immigrants then Scotland has to be one of the American foundational cultural cornerstones.
I used to work for a college whose founder was a first generation Scottish immigrant way back in 1864. He started a school for working class people in a small rented room and grew that into the large multicity school it has become today. When we celebrated special occasions at the college they would break out the bagpipes. His tartan was akin to our school flag. The Tartan colors made up our school colors. Our mascot was a Scottish guy in a kilt holding the pipes.
Impact far beyond your shores indeed! National Tartan day is April 6. Yep, there is a national Tartan day/week here in the US, did you know that? It celebrates the contributions the Declaration of Arbroath had in forming our own constitution. Our love affair with your country runs deeper than most Americans are probably comfortable admitting ;-) If I'm honest, I have to admit the accent from the Glasgow area ladies makes me stop dead in my tracks.

James Field, Yea I've kinda planted my arse all over Uk , mostly doing plumbing, CH etc...and I've generally lived in little villages and small towns, and they tend to be the worst, they tend to think that the British, and I include the Irish in this, are a race of people, and they don't like it when you point out that we are mixed race to the point of raceless. I find that asking people their surnames, and then pointing out that they either Saxon, Norman, Viking or whatever...they tend not to like that, but as I am usually just passing thru' I couldn't give 2 fks what they think...Truth hurts as they say

I honestly love this video, I'm from Glasgow myself, born and raised, its so good to be reminded that there's more to Scotland than here, I don't like my area lol, I miss Edinburgh and I love how you talk about our history because that sense of pride that you mentioned, that's where it comes from! We have a long and well documented history and I REALLY need to go back to the highlands, I went with family and family friends when I was 16 I think? We were staying in a small town called Carrbridge, I recommend looking it up its gorgeous! Your passion is so pleasing to watch, its so hard not to smile watching your videos hehe :P

      @SonnieTravels  5 років тому +1

Aww That's all so lovely to read! Thanks so much for commenting 😍😁 I'll be sure to Google Carrbridge. We've never been there that I can remember, but we were lucky enough to see a lot of other places in Scotland like Isle of Skye and Loch Ness (of course), we kayaked off the west coast and around the Isle of Mull, we hiked Benn Nevis and all around Loch Lomond too! I miss it so much. The history is amazing too, as you said. There's honestly something for everyone to love I think. Glasgow is a cool city, but I think I personally fit Edinburgh better. They're both great, but have a different feel to each of them. :)

Yep....legal weed seals the deal 😄

WE ALMOST MOVED TO THE BAY AREA! Joe had a job offer out in Fremont, CA and we were looking at apartments out that way! We ended up deciding to move to Scotland instead (so I could get my education for less money than it would have been in California) and we never looked back. I love California, but I've got to say, I love Scotland more. Honestly, so many people smoke weed in Edinburgh and no one cares (I've literally seen people do it at bus stops). Although I am completely pro-legalizing it. Maybe one day Scotland will do so. My friend Rachel is from that same area and she prefers Edinburgh. Maybe you guys could move for a bit and try a new part of Scotland instead? :) You could always go back if you don't like it. :)

Stop it, you're making me feel homesick! As a Scot living in Spain I definitely miss small things here and there but the thing I miss the most is the people. That might be down to a language barrier but here in Spain when you're introduced to a group of people no one really makes the effort to make you feel welcome so you have to barge in on conversations. Which can be hard. And usually the topics of conversation are really stale compared with the hilarity sodden Scots conversations. The first time I took my Spanish girlfriend back home she thought I knew everyone because so man people would have a wee blether with us. I really miss that.

More like a small village or people, rather than a big city. :) That's so awesome about the parks though! I didn't know that! I wish I got to spend more time there.
Thanks! It's one of my favourite colours! :)

I moved from Scotland to Stockholm Sweden April last year. I never quite realised how much I loved my country until then, I miss it so much every day. I miss the Scots language, the humour, the friendliness... I was raised at the bottom of a glen, I miss the vast lands with hardly a soul. I miss the clean crisp air, always desperate to go back. I enjoyed your Scots language quiz!

I’ve visited Scotland several times and I agree wholeheartedly Scotland is outstanding. I’ve not yet been north of Inverness but look forward to exploring there next time. I have to say you shocked me when you spoke of the many languages you were used to hearing and you mentioned specifically Cantonese. As some who’s lived in China north & south for more than two decades I find it uncommon to hear someone like yourself who can differentiate between the different dialects of Chinese. I’m a Mandarin speaker but having lived in the south for 14 years I’ve also picked up a bit of Cantonese so I can tell the difference myself. Enjoy Japan! I’ve been visiting there a couple times a year for many years and really love it there too.

And I’ve never heard anyone speak with such a sweet, chipper demeanor about serial killers and cannibalism. That was hilarious. Thanks for making this video!

Aww haha thanks. I've been to Glasgow a few times. Its definitely much more of a city than Edinburgh. I prefer my wee one personally, but it all depends on what you like. Glasgow has better night life, more extreme weather, and is closer to some amazing nature in the west coast (Loch Lomond, Fort Williams, etc.). I wish you all the best there!

What makes me proud to be a Scot is the wonderful people who made such an incredible contribution to the world that we live in today ... Logie Baird (TV), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Alexander Fleming (penicillin), Adam Smith (Economics) ... and many others but perhaps the best is James Clerk Maxwell, whose Maxwell equations (used in everything electronic) put him up there with Einstein and Newton. There is a small Maxwell museum in Edinburgh.

If you ever get a chance to watch it, it's interesting.

@@SonnieTravels I've been to lots of Greek islands but I think my longing for a more fulfilled life got caught up with ho w I felt about them. So they are VERY special but also part of my disppointment. Nothing to do with them tho. Complicated as you can see even from that!

Sorry basically I mean that reality overtook my romanticism. Hopefully that won't happen to you. I have subscribed so I hope to find out. Keep posting please!

I left Scotland 24 years ago for a new life in Australia. Everything you said about Scotland is true and it still has a big pull on me. My Australian wife and Daughter, like you love the country and have made it clear they want to live there. Unfortunately the manufacturing jobs just don’t exist anymore. Like generations before me we reluctantly left our country our home in the hope of a better financial position to bring up our families.

It's lovely to hear someone not from Scotland speak so positively about our country. Thank you! :-)

I miss the people more than anything, the beauty of the country, the trains, the galleries, fish and chips, the sea shores, and the highlands.

There wont be one thing I would miss about Scotland but the countless wee things that as a Scot you take for granted. My super six would be the banter, the smell of Scotland (you ken that smell), a glass litre bottle of Irn Bru available everywhere, the national pride felt on mass when the country does well in sport, HAGGIS and finally access to the best northern hemisphere produce in the world (beef, fish, lamb, veg, berries, crustaceans, milk, cheese, whisky, beer, biscuits, confectionary an all of that) There is no doubt Scotland is the best wee country in the world!

That's something I noticed about the Japanese, they are so nice in a over the top kind of way it actually makes you suspicious and uncomfortable but the Scots are nice in really casual natural way, I don't think they know they are being nice meanwhile the Japanese make a effort to be nice and it comes across like you are meeting nuns instead of regular people. I love the Japanese though.

OK you need to do a video on your skin care routine because your skin is glowing, smooth, and beautiful. Love that blouse it makes your eyes pop.

I think a lot of that is the lighting and highly pigmented foundation :) I don't wear make up in a lot of my vlogmas videos so you can see the flaws easier. Did you see my Korean Skincare routine video? I'm still using a lot of those products :)
