I have used this in the summer in Baja at temperatures of 112 with no issues, didn’t break the glass and helped a lot.
yeah I think he might have gotten that mixed up, because the ubiquitous folding windshield shades are made from practically the same material.
My guess is they told him not to have the black side facing out in the summer (to help with AC inside), which would make more sense.
I have used it in the summer and have had zero issues. It really help out alot
Was it on the inside?
Answer !
What we did to help combat that problem of summer use is installed a while UV protective tarp over the outward facing edge. cut the tarp about 2 inches wider then the reflectix pulled it over and taped it to the back. Reinstalled and BAM!! 3 season panels. Works Great..
Good tips - Reflectix works best with an air gap, as its says in the instructions on the package. Best info I’ve seen on topic is on UA-cam channel ‘ PSC Camper Conversions ‘ - to summarize, he puts chloroplast between two layers of Reflectix.
In the summer put reflectics on the outside of glass for a cooler interior. And you may use aluminium tape to hold it in place
That ending sounded like a newscaster lol
..... that shiny silvery coating on either side of. "Reflectix"bubble wrap is a thin film of "Aluminum" [ Al ] which has a thermal conductivity of 237 ; compared to glass which is 0.8 .
IF you know anything about aluminum, you probably know its lightweight and conducts electricity and temperature very well. It's quite possible that its conducting heat 0UT of your van or RV.
Any time the shiny surface comes in contact with any other material the reflective properties are cancelled. Even light dust can have a great impact on the reflective qualities.
The plastic bubble wrap has an R value of less than 1 .....
...... Reflectix requires a 1 inch trapped air space to be effective.
Thanks for posting! After our first cold snap, I decided to look around for more insulation. Your video had just the information I needed. Thank you!
Good info!! I bought my 1st RV!!! Definitely will get “bubble wrap aluminum” roll. 👍
good job, ive used it several times winter rv living and it amazing
If you can't afford, or find, a roll of this just go buy a couple car windshield shades. I got 2 for $8 at the dollar store. It's the same stuff. That's what we did, and typically one side is already coloured or patterned, so its safe for summer use. I use this in my truck as well, and my windshield hasn't exploded lol
it's actually cheaper than window shades
For the summer, I have UV reflective window film. I use the highest UV reflectivity I can get. No one sees in when they walk by my windows- most of the UV is reflected and I get security as well.
Tina, UV reflectivity does almost nothing for heat. Glass is a natural UV barrier. You need IR reflectivity.
During the 1970s in Phoenix they had aluminized window film. No chance of seeing through it. But when I searched the 'net for window film, couldn't find any.
i used this in summer and the AC is much more efficient. No damages
98° in Hershey PA yesterday and felt the heat creeping out around the edge of our doors. Worse on/near the top. I'll keep some extra Reflectix to cover those areas and the exterior of our rig where the fridge is inside. Also adding that or some 1" board on the sides of the fridge. Ours is next to cabinets with bread in them and the fridge puts off heat inside of them. It also seemed to work harder due to heat on the exterior wall. Lowered the awning down on both sides like for the rain, but it kept sliding up when we left and the sun hit the wall.
You made that look so easy. Of course I bought the 16" wide and bought the tape to put pieces together. The tape does not work. And thanks for the glass heating up note. I'll go take it out right now.😊
Nancy Fahey it won’t break the glass
that's funny I'm in the process of doing this myself. I believe regular bubble wrap works well too and lets in lught as well as veing much cheaper! thanks for sharing
Bayward yes I use regular bubble wrap on my window all year round..works great
Just naming that stuff was a major help , thank U . Not 2 worried about summer use , we C so many windshield sun screens made O the same thing . Much luk 2 U n yrs , happy campin
Hows the condensation that's building up between the window and the insulation?
Paint one side black for winter, turn it round and put it on the outside in the summer.
Do you use a layer of corrugated plastic in between reflectix for added insulation?
great video!!!! does it help with condensation tho??
for a true barrier per manufacturer you need a half inch gap between window an reflectix/vapor barrier......before anyone trolls me on this i DO UNDERSTAND you are using this on tempered glass in a van!
That's great but you can't see out any of your windows! Is there anything that's clear like this ?
I have used it works good, I painted outside black...can't tell it's winterized from outside☺
For the summer time, simply put white cloth over the Reflectix.
I live in florida is this good to use here in the heat?
Why not make cut outs of the windows out of thin azdale panels then glue that foil bubble foil to one side and then either use strong magnets or swivels to secure the insulation in each window?
I have used reflectics in a minivan at Burning Man and there was never damage to the windows
Thanks for the video. I am going to spend another winter in my camper in Idaho and I am looking for was to keep the heat in. I was thinking of the plastic that you put over windows. What you have done looks good but it seems like it would turn your home into a dark cave.
thank you!
What's the width of that roll? My windows are very big. Tnx
If that is the same stuff that people put in their car windows I would think it would be OK to have them in the RV, Trailers, and Vans. I have a little place out in the desert and I have the car window reflectors in my house and they work wonderful. Brought my electric bill way down. I had never heard of Reflectix window cover but I will be looking for some. Thanks for the tip it will look a lot better than car window shades.
beverly hunter i
It's totally the same stuff. Just buy the car window coverings that are only reflectix on one side. 2 of them did all the windows in our slide in and they were $4 each at the dollar store.
In summer some people spray the reflectix side facing outside black, would that make a difference for summer use to prevent the glass from breaking?
does it stick on its on over over for a long time or does it fall out after time?
Do you need to use this on dual pane windows in the winter?
Where do they sell this at?
Thank you
What about condensation?
How have you insulated your windshield for winter
Thanks for the post.
Thanks for the video. Biggest down side is tou can't see outside. 😕
Thank you!
I think the roll shown was 25 inch wide. I bought a 48 wide. More pricey though.
Maybe in the summer one could put it on the outside, to avoid damaging the windows. Not such and easy install since there is not place to tuck it.
There actually is and it's also an anti-theft trick, extra bits on both side that you stick in the doors for the night or during the day in summer
I was thinking the same thing
Great video.
Where do you buy that bad boy at?
can you leave it up all winter in the trailer to help keep out the cold even if you are storing it?
No Jack. Thermodynamics means that an unheated trailer will eventually obtain the same temp as its surroundings.
You put it on the outside in the summer time.
Damn, I guess I need a new pair of scissors. lol They look just like yours, but I can't cut through it at all.
Thanks for the video and the tip about the possible window damage. I suppose you could take the same piece and tape it to the outside with masking tape during the summer. ?
Sean Frank I
thanks for the tip about NOT using it in the summer
I used it this past Summer in the Eastern Carolina's with no problems.
its only on temp!! use some two sided tape in the summer and then just peel it when ya hit the road!!!!
I have read that Reflectix must have an air gap between it and the surface you need to insulate to be effective as an insulator. Otherwise it is merely a way to "reflect" rediant heat, hence the name. As an insulator, it would rate fairly poorly compared to, say, insulation.
just paint it white to reflect the sun wont ruin glass
The idea that you shouldn't use this on windows in the summer to keep heat out for fear of breaking the window is nonsense. This same type product is sold as a windshield/dashboard cover and I've used them for years with no problems.
Get a 4 season RV as they have dual pane windows and closed cell insulation in the walls, ceiling & floor.
I have a four seasons 5th wheel. Do you need to.use this in the winter. Im living in mine.....first winter this year
@@nicolemurdock945 we have a 4 season camper and we still put insulation in all the vents and we're doing the windows this week. We are full timers. To make the vent insulation we used a garage door insulation. It's got silver backing with foam in the middle. Then we used Tuck Tape to seal the raw foam edges. Works great for blocking any little drafts over night. No 4 season camper is truly 4 season. Especially since campers aren't really made for full time living. We also run a high efficiency ceramic heater when we're on shore power. It makes a dry heat so it helps fight condensation.
We are on on 1st winter full timing in our 4 seasons travel trailer. We are not sealed and are taking in quite a bit of frigid outside air, mainly from the windows and the single slide.
Great video but the sound quality is very poor. sorry....
yayaya we know ya got to measure pal just show us how ya installed it!!!
Tim THE F WORD Johnston not everyone does
iF YOU DONT PUT IT UP RIGHT IT CAN CAUSE MOLD.
How do you put it up right? My Mom is having me look into it because it’s happening to us. Do you have any tips??
@@mackg_03 NO,i'VE JUST SEEN the mold it can cause. I decided not to use it. Keep searching though, you'll find tips!
sun reflection is no more than your standard windows shades
