to winterize the trailer, i spent the whole year in wy. in my trailer , working a pipeline job, i placed 1/4" plywood around the openings of sides the trailer, i also placed the rubber tires on a sheet of plywood from the cold under the tires. this make no froze o the tires. . on the cold and hot pipes, as well as the lines for the grey and the black the help insulate the pipes from freezing. heater wraps are the best around the water, gray and black tanks.as far as sweat in the trailer from the extra heat, the vent in the bathroom a crack open all the time with the bathroom door closed. only if the bottom of the door has a 1/2" opening under the door to the floor.

Very well done & presented. We go out at least 1x a month year round. one trip we got caught at a State Campground when it started to snow. The first night about 50% left. 2nd day the camp host warned us of another front coming. Everyone else left. I drained my water tanks (not the black). Disconnected the 'city' water hose and drained it every night before turning in. wrapped the hose bib with an old towel. In the morning took a teapot of hot water and poured it over the outside of the hose bib and reconnected. Jumped up on the roof in the morning & again in the early evening and swept off the snow. The real fun was 3 days later when I had to dig out a path for the tires to run and a bit of the center so the trailer belly wouldn't drag to get to the packed snow on the road. I got my daily workout in. I always figured worse case scenario we could leave the trailer and jump in our 4x4 p/u and drive into town and come back later. If I could attach photos you could see the real Winter Wonderland we were in... It was well worth it.... BTW.. I always carry a shovel.

Well from 92 till 98 my wife and i spent xmas from nov 1ft to jan 7th in muncy pa at lycoming mall as silver and gold smiths. It was 4 below constent temp. We renter a 450 lb tank and we went to the hardware store an bought clear plastic sheet storm windows for our rv. Now at that temp we used 10lbs every 4 days that says a lot for how rvs were made then as oposed to today. We keep the temp at 72 deg. It was fine. 80 gal water tank i filled about every 3 nights. We stayed in the mall parking lot close enough to the mall that we pulled electric from there and an mg room had water outlet.

We’re the ones that head to warmer weather states even though our RV has the Artic package. Cold weather just doesn’t agree with our bones anymore, so California is the place to avoid the extreme winter weather! Yes there are areas that get down to the freeze point, but thank goodness they are few and far between. If there is days that get down to 32 degrees or below we make sure that we keep a drizzle at the faucets with the grey tank open and that keeps the water pipes and sewer tube from freezing.
You presented some really good information for those rough riders who want to camp in cold weather conditions, for us we choose to avoid those areas like the plague!
Hope you guys are headed to warmer weather conditions during this winter, due to the supply issues it’s going to be really costly this winter. Currently in California, fuel costs have skyrocketed. Diesel is hovering around $5/gal and propane is hovering around $4.50/gal. Shortages of food products have escalated prices at the markets. Hope that once the supply issues change prices will normalize once again! Best wishes and Happy Holidays to you both, Take Care and be Safe traveling this Winter.

We live full time in our rv in North Georgia we use the foam noodles from Lowe’s to cover our water hose just a few dollars so you don’t need a heated hose we get below freezing all the time at night we have never used propane in our rig to heat it we just use the fireplace and a ceramic heater in the bathroom at night on a timer we do have a enclosed belly but no tank warmers I guess it really depends on where you stay if you need to run the propane throughout the night

    • @angrleads2h862

Cheaper than that, you can go to home depot and get some armor flex insulation, its made for insulating water piping and isnt as bulky but permanent if you want it to be.

  • @hollybishop484
    @hollybishop484 2 роки тому +4

Learned so much from you guys, thanks! We are full time rv living in mid Michigan. As some added things we've learned..
-get an small hose and an rv toilet wand like the camco swivel stick. You can use this to help flush your black tank by making a quick connection in your shower instead of hooking a separate hose up outside, especially if your spigot has been winterized.
-put a thermostat sensor under your camper so you know what's going on underneath your camper AND in your basement.
-Foam skirting was totally worth it! Cheap and effective! Throw a heat light under there for a little extra insurance as well.
-if you have a heated water hose remember to wrap your water filter if it's outside. Otherwise it'll freeze, expand and crack.
-plastic wrap your windows! It'll help with condensation on your windows and it'll create that air gap without blocking out the sun, which also helps heat your rv. Remember the sun is a free heat source!
-if you can use your fireplace or space heater do so when you can. It'll help combat the condensation alongside your dehumidifier.
-Lastly, plan ahead! If you haven't gotten your camper yet but expect to be winter camping at some point, plan on getting a 4 season. While it usually means Florida 4 season and not northern North America 4 seasons, it does help. Coming from mid Michigan, it's made a huge difference to have all of the cracks and crevices already sealed up for us by the manufacturer.

I bought 3 campers. Gutted them all out and basically made a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house. Im not allowed to connect them together so it’s awkward. Ran all new water pipes, all new gas lines, all new electrical lines, all new sewage pipes.
I use a 21kw solar kit. I drilled a water well for water. And installed a septic tank. One camper is only for utilities like washing clothes, cooking, washing dishes, and stores the solar inverters and batteries. The other 2 are for living. I completely surrounded all of them with square hay bales to keep them warm and the water pipes from freezing. Installed a 40 gallon propane water heater. New toilets, showers, sinks.
All of this so we can live good while we save to build our house. So far so good.

I'll take option number 2 in Illinois Alex for WTF It's cold. Love the video guys. So spot on with the information! We went with a professional group out of South Dakota that didn't do the snap skirting. It's made things so much better having the thick canvas skirt. We've even used it in the summer to keep things cooler in the super hot summers.. I've never had a company not rent us a 100 gallon tank. The main thing we have ran into is companies not wanting to service tanks that were not theirs actually. Usually we have to use their regulators or have them certify/inspect the aux propane access that's on most newer rv's these days. Keep up the awesome videos =)

Great tips. How do you get all that tape for skirting off your rig?
    1. Use the electric heat, but run the furnace fan to circulate the heat to the remote areas.
    2. Instead of pipe insulation, try caulking backer rod. It can be rolled up when not in use, comes in smaller sizes if needed.
    3. Heated water hoses are fine, but the water source is going to freeze anyway.
    4. Motor homes have the advantage of using the chassis heater.
    5. If the battery('s) are in peril, just start your motor home or reconnect your tow vehicle to your trailer to recharge.

Just going back thru winter rv living. I live in alabama, love y’all’s vids. Last winter I went thru Dual 30 pound propane tanks in about 3 to 4 days. Now I drive 18 wheelers for a living and home on the weekends. I DID IN FACT GO WITH the big boy propane tank. River City Propane will in fact bring out the 120 gallon submarine style tank. No monthly tank rent with a full fill . Full tank fill on set up basically took care of a tank rental deal. Anyhow, River City came out, set the 120 gallon tank, ran Cooper line that they buried in the ground , pressure tested/checked my rv, and we were good to go. Now since last December I have paid for 2 tank fills and I’m still at 40% on my 2nd tank fill as of last hometime, 2 weeks ago. River City also allows a customer to pay whatever whenever on your account thru the year. So you can actually pay a cheaper price for propane in the off season. Say you buy 100 gallons in June at 2.89 a gallon and don’t need a fill, well that purchase is locked in. Say you wait until say October and prone is 3.19 a gallon then it is what it is. Anyhow I truely enjoy you guys videos.

Hi there!! We have loved watching your videos. I’m a travel nurse as well. We bought our RV in December and I have been working in North Carolina since September. We are in our RV now and it is pretty cold and has snowed and ice several times. One thing my husband found on Amazon is propane tank warmer. We have them around both tanks and we plug them in on the side of our RV. We had to do this to make sure when the tank gets low the propane won’t freeze. Didn’t know if y’all had heard about those. Love your channel and things for the tips. Karla 😊

I agree I stay in phx Az for the winter so we don’t go through that cold living . I hold 38 gals of propane and pretty much cook on the stove and knock off the chill in the mornings and in 4 years only filled it once and it took 12 gals but we don’t do cold weather, we did do a week in Moab in February but stayed on electricity we put some lights (old Fashion ) in the belly and that kept stuff from freezing. We now stay on our tank water a 100% of the time due to line failures , that is the easiest way to limit water damage from pipes that have been stretched from freezing the water is limited to what you hold not what a city can provide. It can happen so just be prepared.

My wife and I travel for work and we spend winters in the camper. Our first on we used the green insulation board and aluminum duck tape and put a small utility heater under the tanks. Wasn't to bad on propane at first, but as the camper got older,it got colder. We use a 100 pound tank. Yeah it's a pain to load and unload, but it's better than constantly refilling tanks. We had a 30 pound tank next to it,so we used it while the big tank was being filled. We used plastic and tarps once and once is all you want to use it. It constantly flaps in the wind, even when weighted down. Don't forget to drain the sewer hose after dumping the tanks. They tend to freeze and bust. But the whole manufactured skirting is nice, but ridiculously expensive.

I have a Solitude 310gk 2018 and I have done some of the same things as you guys. I tried something different however that I think is pretty cool for cold weather. I bought a 210 board ft spray foam insulation kit and sprayed the outside of the frame rails and the cross over section on the drop frame. I sprayed the foam about 1 inch thick and also sealed up the gaps around the slideout hydraulic rams to minimize air transfer. Since doing this I have never had my pipes freeze and keeping the trailer warm without skirting is pretty easy. The next thing I did was I installed a chinese diesel heater 8kw in the front storage bay next to the batteries. I cut a 3 inch hole in the wood divider to the basement area and when it is really cold out I can keep the basement close to 80 degrees. I have an idea to use the diesel heater to supplement the propane furnace with a duct pressure booster, but I haven't gotten around to it yet, maybe this week as I live in Wyoming and we usually visit our daughter in Bozeman, MT over the holidays. I also use the reflectix on the windows and it helps and I also installed a 3m window coating that seems to have eliminated any condensation on the windows, but only marginally helps with heat transfer. The diesel heater is pretty cool in that it will warm the bathroom floor. I tried letting in run into the front compartment to try and heat up the front cap because the closet in the bedroom gets so cold, but it didn't do much. I can run that heater on less than a gallon a day and the heat output is adjustable. With the spray foam on the frame rails I have never froze any water lines down to -10 F. Good tip on pipe insulation for the slides, I just happen to have a case of it in my shop that might work.

Love you guys and so many great ideas - we do not have a fancy TT - it is very nice, but no 4 seasons and heated underbelly...but hoping we don't have to Full Time it...but we bought this in case we needed to...again, never say never!

Great tips!!! We've been caught in below freezing temperatures a few times in TX (where we go to get away from WI cold in the winters-HA!) including Snowmegedon in Feb 2021 when we lost power for 15 hours in sub 0 temps. We survived it and no frozen pipes!!. We have a small RV (26 ft 5th wheel with no slideouts) and only went through 1/2 a 30 lb propane tank...no supplemental heat due to no electricity, and because of the ice and snow, we couldn't use our briefcase solar panel. Also, we use clear plastic insulated window kits on our single pane windows, so heat comes in from the sun, but no draft of cold air and you don't feel like you're inside a hershey kiss. 😁 We have been full time rving for over 5 years and do not have a heated water hose either...we just fill the fresh water tank and disconnect from city water supply if we're in a campground. Our biggest challenge is yet to come... We need to return to WI in March this year for the arrival of our twin grandbabies. Campgrounds are not open in WI in the winter!! They are closed until mid-April!! We know where there are a few dump stations we can drive to, but no potable water sources near where we have to be, and at most, we will have 15-20 Amp (house current) electric. FUN times ahead!!! 😳🥶😬 We are looking for winter rvers who don't have hookups in winter...any advice appreciated. We know what to do for SHORT term crazy cold, but no hookups in winter will be a new experince!!

My husband and are in central GA till the end of this year. Our travel trailer tends to get bad condensation on our windows when the temps drop below 45 degrees. So we put bubble wrap on the windows and then covered them with plastic. We haven’t had any issues of condensation on them even though it’s gotten down to 30 degrees here already.
Also put a curtain up over the door to help minimize the draft there as well.

We are able to work our way through these freezes even though some minor problems have occurred. I don't want to rip into the under belly of our trailer but I wish there was a safe and moderately easy way to put heat strips around our Pex tubing. That would take care of the worst of our issues.
