The term has a nautical history. It meant climbing a rope by hand on board a sailing ship. As you reach up, your hand closes over your fist below it. The term hand over fist evolved from making progress up a rope to making progress generally, and then only to making money.

According to The Free Dictionary: 'This term comes from sailing and began life as hand over hand, which is how sailors climbed a rope...' It actually makes sense.

"They were making money hand over fist; on the contrary, they lost all sometime."
"I thought they made it all hand over fist."
"No, I've never made money hand over fist."
"Come on! He just made it all hand over fist, and got out of the industry."
Thank you very much for this expression, but one needs to know that it is informal.
    Ukraine!

Excellent video Kevin!!! I can use this expression in abother situation but I don't know if it is correct. For example: this lady is getting fat hand over fist. They were selling houses hand over fist. I was losing weight hand over fist.
Please let me know if I can use this expression referring to other things that are not money
