Anyone who hasn't listened to Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony should. This third movement is one of the most triumphant that you will find. But then it is followed by one of the most melancholy, even morose (though very beautiful) movements ever written. The contrast between the two takes the listener on a roller coaster ride!
Captivating, enthralling, sublime... This lovely lady has raised in me a passion for music that I thought lost, because of my age. Thank you, thank you, dear Yeol-Eum. I'm excited, you makes me mourn with happiness... How could I pay you something so?
Absolutely brilliant pianism! I think orchestral conductors might learn a thing or two about this piece if they listened to this A+ performance. Such impressive dexterity and "full score" imagination..
My words exactly - then and NOW! [esp. with the "devoted" of the "Blue Boy.]. She is without doubt one of the TOP young pianist of the last 5 years, and should have won the GOLD at this competition. [Check how many other contestants prorammed antohher big concerto [the Rach 3] in addition to the required Tchai.Bb, and WON the required Mozart Conc. performance.] None of her age-range on the scene today has the huge, panoramic repertoire that she possesses.
You (classicalways) put it very well. I doubt I could hear a more powerful and dynamically thriling interpretation than the masterful one that Son deliver here. She may top herself in a future rendition, but I doubt any (of her generation) on the scene could do it now. For such a *tiny* woman (maybe 5' 2", 100 lbs, and 1/3rd of it from muscle), she produces more thrilling sound than some male pianists of twice her size.
To classicalalways : None of these pianists, except perhaps Horowitz, could not have been playing this Scherzo in this way so light, fluid and exciting, not deafen us ...
Check out the iconic version by Lazar Berman…. Also Arcadi Volodos apparently played this transcription as well, so that must be a great version as well.
Beg to differ. Son deserved First Prize - and I heard EVERY NOTE of all Rounds of the 6 Finalists!! If you listened to all the finalists, and stil have this opinion, I can respect that. BecauseTrifonov has some "caressing" sounds and a "beautiful young innocent face", they seemingly affect and impress those who are sometimes led too much by the Subjective, and not enought by the Objective.
Yes! I agree to all you say (and have recommended her Gershwin on another panel in "UA-cam"). I have made the point of Son's improvement since the VCC, 2009 in muscial AND technical prowess - and I thought they were superb then. I have heard her Chopin Etuees op 25) from about 8 years ago - younger than when Trifonov recorded them for the competiton(!)Frankly, I'm about "sick" of The Etudes. She has such a FLAIR for piece off the Beaten Path!
Is this her arrangement? Too bad such questions are not answered in the description. Then again one would be chastised for worrying about such trivia when confronted with a performance as brilliant as this. I see in the sidebar that Yuja also does a performance of this movement. This should be interesting.
It was a competition of greatest handicap. Did you not hear? PFFFFFFffffffffffffffffff of course she should have won. This is genius person! The failure of the judges to get over their inability to not see passed blindness will hopefully, surely, be something all professional musicians will remember about that competition.
How many comments did I read during the VCC in 2009 about Son's "unbeautiful" looks. I certainly don't agree, but I hope she will take these vicious AND stupid type of comments to the bank like Landowska did.
@pianoforever100 I think that Tchaikovsky would have said something similar. If it had been heard (and seen), perhaps there would cease cholera and wrote Seventh Symphony ...
Firstly, they both have techniques that are good enough. I watched both her and Trifonov's entire programmes for this competition. They are totally different in their approach to music - Yeol Eum Son's is full of flair and understanding of musical time. She listens exceptionally well, and plays with an individual characterization. Daniil Trifonov is a magician with hands that can create soundworlds and experiences that connect with spirtuality. He is in a different league.;
There are many meaningless comments on this page comparing Yeol Eum Son and Daniil Trifonov. But Trifinov is in the league of Russian pianists and Yeol in the Asian pianists' league. So I cannot compare them. Both may be contemporary piano geniuses, but you just have to enjoy the beautiful sounds you hear and the feelings you feel when you hear and see them play
For those below who seem transfixed with this genius young girl and her clothes; you should be listening to her fantastic playing-and remember, she is still a Minor!
Russian doesn't necessarily imply heavy and loud. This is a scherzo for goodness' sake, and I think it could be played with more lightness than it often is.
@JA4794 If you think schooling means playing a movement with less excitement and provides you less of what the Tchaikovsky Pathetique Symphony hears performed in a concert hall by a top flight orchestra, you can enjoy a much tamer and lighter version with Son. You don't have to enjoy a performance that is much more exciting and more more in the tradition of how the great Russian virtuosos perform one of the great moments in Russian music. I prefer ballistic - like Tchaikovsky did.
It is a scherzo of a full scale orchestral work that at its climax is massive and thrilling, and Son is not that style of pianist. The greatest Russian pianists, such as Gilels, Richter, Horowitz, and Berman all were capable of producing powerful and massive sound out of their instrument. To use the argument this is a scherzo and forget that this is Tchaikovsky including a big march right in the middle of it leaves out half the challenge of producing a great performance on the piano.
I agree she is great. She certainly is very musical and especialy effective in a work like this with her brilliant, flawless technique but that does not make her a genius. Trifonov deserved first prize with his profound and natural playing.
Very spirited&spectacular, just a little too chaotic in overall rythm for my taste, and not enough sense of climax-building. Those complaining about lack of massive weight,"russian"sound and less thrilling than Berman,Volodos, etc, need look no further than the hideous piano she plays:a Yamahaha will never express any musical, poetic, lyric or dramatic emotion, just the mathematic exactitude of notes. But it's easier to play, consequently making real pianos harder to play afterwards.Good luck to her!
". . .soundworlds. . .that connect with spirituality." And what if one is not given to "spirituality"? Trifonov may be just marginally better in the slow "spiritual'" works (have you heard her "Sheep May safely Graze"?), but for sheer blinding virtuosity and SOUND worlds that mimic orchestral force and color, he is a pale second! One wonders if he is capable of playing either the Rach 3 or the Prokofiev 2, much less daring to play them, in compeition.
Well, me old darling, now he's recorded all the Rach concerti, you can actually listen to his ability in the real world. You seem oddly worked up over this wee matter.
there is no need to listen to this most unfortunate, mauled recording. just tune in the last 11 minutes of the full version ! ua-cam.com/video/ZOvR4Nm_uZo/v-deo.html
Yeol Eum Son didn't win by objective reason. She performed Rachmaninov's PC-3 as if it was Liszt's concert. It's not welcome in Russia. In Russian competitions they prefer musician to follow composer's style.
The Sofyia uryvayeva rendition of this song is exponentially better than this performance. Sofyia recorded hers in her house and it has ten times more heart soul and artistry than this bland performance.
NYET! She's good, but, please: Son is absolutely world-class, and came near the top at every major competition. Uryvayeva did not. And she plays this ferocious piece much, much slower.

Words are hardly enough but two will suffice: simply staggering!

Absolutely brilliant pianism! I think orchestral conductors might learn a thing or two about this piece if they listened to this A+ performance. Such impressive dexterity and "full score" imagination..
Strong mind and elegant tone!
She always fascinate us!
Nice comment! Soon Choi
Fantastica!!

The greatest pianist of generation.
sanjosemike
she is very good bu you are smoking some serious crack if you think she's the greatest of a generation..
yeah, good but clearly not greatest.
To classicalalways : None of these pianists, except perhaps Horowitz, could not have been playing this Scherzo in this way so light, fluid and exciting, not deafen us ...

A wonderful transcription beautifully played.
I can hear the orchestra. 0_0
This is a fantastic performance!!!
Wonderful!

Bravissimo!

Wonderful playing but why is the sound quality do dreadful? Please can someone upload a recording that does justice to the performance?
Brilliant

In the big photo in the bottom, Tchaikovsky smiles satisfied, as telling the audience: what, plays the girl or not?

Does anyone know who made this transcription?
obviously feinberg
@PIanoReview Wrong! PianoReview from where?
She has god's hands !

seriously? she was 25 at the time of the competition.

Yeol Eum Son didn't win because Trifonov is Gergiev's protégé.
As they say, the system is rigged. What else is new?!?
@@inraid Sorry for keeping you waiting for two years, but here is another not-so-new fact: Japanese being butthurt about Korean winning anything.
Tchaikovsky would have been able to play this entire symphony as well as his other works as he was also an amazing pianist
Tchaikovsky (famously) was far from a great pianist.
Not enough bass.
The art of piano s not about blinding virtuosity and loud sounds.
She is great - but Trifonov is in a different league of musical invention and imagination. Please don't compare her to him.
