  • Everyone can contribute to #BlackLivesMatter and to the movement against racism in their own way, whether it's protesting, donating, signing petitions, posting on social media, or having conversations with family or friends about racism. I wanted to share one of the many conversations I have had with my dad about the topic. As a disclaimer, I am not an expert and I am not claiming to know everything about this topic. I am still learning a lot and I just hope this video is used as a starting point/inspiration for you all in the hopes it will inspire you to have these conversations in your own lives.

The amount of Vietnamese translated information on Black Lives Matter and systemic racism is so very limited. Thank you for sharing this. I tried to have a conversation with my Dad in Vietnamese and it ended in a screaming match. Thank you for sharing so I can share with my parents.

Funny that of all people, vietnamese should know the consequence of communism, socialism and marxism. You can't argue about hate while siding yourself with another hate group. But hey, you didn't experience what older vietnamese experienced about the killimg fields and all.

As a black women sitting in my favorite nail salon with my favorite technician, I was curious to know her take on the movement. I don't think she really understands, but considering that black women spend so much money on a weekly basis supporting Vietnamese owned nail salons that it's important for them to understand the movement, our struggles and what it all means. I Googled the phrase 'how do vietnamese feel about black lives matter' and found this video. Thank you for creating it and continue to educate your community.

I came across this video during a Google search also. I have watched many videos of Asian descent, speak their racism of black people. When we watched reports of Chinese people evicting African residents because they blamed those renters as the cause of Covid 19. A McDonalds restaurant had fliers posted banning black people from entering. I wondered

It is nice to see your dad wanting to listen and understand your view of the situation regarding the Black Lives Matter. I've been living in Vietnam for about 5 years and I have met some people who understand not to form opinions when they see a person of color. Your dad was calm and never tried to argue with you while you were trying to explain things to him. I hope you will able to make a video to explain to people back in Vietnam regarding the different ways to treat people of color here in Vietnam. I was racially discriminated against here during the coronavirus period while trying to get some groceries. Thanks to a young Vietnamese man who stepped in and tried to explain to the store manager that her action was bad. The young man had to apologize on behalf of the store owner. I think most people here don't know that their actions or words sometimes makes them appear as a racist. I hope you will be able to enlighten people here on what not to do or say. Thanks and stay blessed.

Hi Tommy, thank you so much for watching and for sharing your personal experience. I am sorry you've had to encounter that in Vietnam but yes I am optimistic that as people learn about this issue they will change their ways. It starts with educating people on a personal level through conversations. I hope you continue to meet incredible Vietnamese people like the gentleman that helped you in the store. Have a wonderful day!

Good video & definitely needed in these times. You have an amazing parent, not just for being Vietnamese, but in general. I completely empathize during the parts where you struggled in Vietnamese to convey your point but because your dad agrees with your message, he was able to allow you to take your time whereas the problem I see with a lot of Viet children & parents is that they are so closed minded and set in their beliefs that's communication is futile, ineffective and becomes unbearable to have. It's hard enough to have a civil conversation with someone with opposing ideas but even more frustrating trying to do so if you have a limited amount of Vietnamese language or don't have a relationship with your parents that allows it to be comfortable. I applaud your initiative 👏

I have horrible memories of living in Vietnam. I'll never forget when I found out the center was paying a Russian man 200.000 VND more per hour because he was white. This man didn't have a degree or teaching qualification. I had both in additional to five years of teaching experience.
I won't forget parents pulling their children out of my class, so they could learn "proper" English from a man who could barely put together a coherent sentence!
I also won't forget helping two nice Vietnamese teens prepare for an interview with an American university. They passed their interview, and I was led to believe it could lead to more work. The father said he wanted a white teacher! I started crying that night and became very depressed. I began to see how Vietnamese women threw themselves at any white man. I also began to see the self-hatred of Vietnamese men.
As an African-American teacher, I'm hyper-aware of the materials I use in class. Since I was teaching Vietnamese children; I wanted to find materials which represented them as well as other people. Sadly, schools used flashcards, videos and reading material with predominantly white people. One girl told me she thought she was ugly because she had black hair and brown eyes! At that point, I started making my own materials with equal representation of all people.
I left Vietnam with very horrible feelings. Later, my friend asked if I was interested in teaching at the Hà Nội International School. Needless to say, I turned down the position.
    Thank you for your video.

I think your dad said black lives matter because all lives matter. He didn't use the slogan "All Lives Matter" in response to "Black Lives Matter"; in my interpretation, he was justifying why black lives matter. I don't think he said anything wrong there. (But then again, I'm just following the subtitles, so I could be wrong.)

This is why a lot of local Hawaii Asians are hesitant to move to the Mainland even to this day. My cousins faced a lot of racism growing up in suburban Portland in the 1970's. One group of White boys bullied my cousin with racism all throughout high school- he is not small BTW. Maybe now not so bad, but I feel that Asians are limited to where they can live in the US- metro areas with decent sized Asian population, and not be in fear of their kids easily being picked on in school because of their race. These experiences on the Continent only reinforce this. I travel (at least before pandemic, a lot for work- over 30X times thru the years all over the country- conferences and training) Remember a Hawaii-cousin as a kid on vacation being told on more than one occasion that she speaks good English. My Dad had probably the worse experience- he was basically refused service in a NYC diner in the mid-70's. He says he will never forget Beef Stroganoff, cause it never came after nearly 1 hour- he ended up leaving and sharing long stink eye at the waitress on the way out. I have a great memory so I can tell you other instances: a flight attendant being totally standoffish throughout the flight- she thanked only the others at the end of the flight personally that were in 1st class- she had a Southern drawl. A guy in a Seattle bar yelling mockingly 'hey, here's Nomo (LA pitcher Hideo Nomo) upon my entering. Being called a 'dirty Spic' by a lady for bumping luggage at an airport- at least I apologized only to at least glare back this time- and at least get the racial slur right :) Mostly, its just extremely abrupt service, a lot of times in the South (New Orleans, Miami for example) and after a bit of reflection, getting the hunch that it was probably race-based animosity.

I liked your discussion with your dad.
As a side note, I found it interesting your dad mentioned in 21:38 about the tipping. I'm sure Asian Americans know how Asians are racist among each other. So I've never traveled to Asia before bc I know I will be treated differently (similar to you and your ex. Was the waiter asian?). But I see UA-cam vids of white people being treated well in vietnam, traveling.
Of course, this is my own insecurity but i do think that asians have this belief of white people with wealth.
And even when schools want English teachers in asian countries to be white looking (even stipulated by the parents!)
I don't mean to take this away from blm, but I think even asians need to recognize our racism.

What is confusing about BLM is because it invite the question of well "All Lives Matter." Whoever invented that term need to understand what BLM could mean to other races. Why make it hard for other to understand the movement when you could simply say BLMT--Black Live Matter Too. Then that would simplifying the understanding that Black Live matter as much as other races instead of having other misunderstanding that BLM mean that Black live matter more than other races. Just my opinion.

EDIT: I’d love it if someone would be able to translate this comment in Viet! We all know google translate sucks
To everyone who doesn’t understand why All Lives Matter is not appropriate during this time:
You’re missing the point. Of course all lives matter, but there are certain sets of problems that a black person will face solely because of their skin that a non-black person *won’t face for the reason of their skin color* (if I remember correctly, the stat is you’re 2.5x more likely to be shot by a police officer if you’re black than if you were white, black women receiving bad healthcare because of the stereotype that black women are dramatic or can endure more pain, black people receiving longer sentences than non-black people with the same charge, etc. I could go on). The phrase BLM implies BLM(too) because although all lives matter, the very current (and has been ongoing for centuries) issue is that anti-blackness needs to be solved if we want to get closer to All Lives Matter. It’s like if I told you hey I’m not having a great day, my grandma died, and you responded, well everyone deals with their grandma dying...which is true but you see that it totally discounts my current experience of my grandma dying. Or it’s like if I voted for a bill that would increase funding for breast cancer research because they were lacking in funds, and you didn’t support the bill because all cancers are bad...which they are but again, discounts the current issue
