Great to see someone putting together a realy useful tool with materials that are on hand in the shed.
You live in the same real world as me and I guess many other hobby engineers, we know what we want ,
but the tightest tollerance in the shed is the purse strings.
Can't belive the YT algothingy has only just lead me here .

You achieved what you set out to do and while it might not be high precision it gets the job done, and more importantly it’s within the scope and cost of a home enthusiast. I for one will give this a try out. Nice clear and concise video I enjoyed watching 👍

LES .. EXCELLENT VIDEO YOU HAVE MADE . PLUS A LOT OF THOUGHT HAS GONE INTO YOUR FLUTE GRINDER YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR SELF .
WITH YOUR SKILLS I BELIEVE THAT COULD BE ADAPTED TO AN END-MILL GRINDER
AS WELL ,THAT WAY YOU COULD KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE ..
KEEP US POSTED IF YOU MODIFY JIG TO DO BOTH .. THANKS .

This is nice work, Les. I'd like to make a suggestion...see what you think. Fit a degree wheel to the back of the collet holder. This doesn't need to be a full 360 degrees. And it could be attached with a magnet or tape or whatever. You then back off the finger until the degree wheel reads the desired clearance angle. No tables or calculations are needed.

@mk6595 @mk6595 That's a great idea and probably more accurate than my method as the radius at the support finger is different to the cutter radius.

I have looked at lots of ideas but I found that very useful. I am surprised that with 10,800 views you only got 135 likes. Some people must be miserable. I made sure I ticked the like button for a good vid.

Do NOT worry about making it pretty,
Worry about making it work properly.
You save a LOT of time...

Thats a good jig youve made there mate. I may have a go at that design myself. Best ive seen for the home machinist. Good jumper too. Looks home made.

Thanks Chris. Well it's all a bit crude but it gets the job done. I am sure it could be improved on. That's my shed jumper......suitable for messing up 😁. I'm amazed you found the video. It went to 4000 views in days I'm guessing because UA-cam made it prominent then just stopped getting views.

Les Fackrell yeah maybe if you did other vids they would promote you. I only just found it by accident.

I would suggest using a piece of a broken hacksaw blade or used bandsaw blade as a finger. That is what we always used in the shop I started out in. That way the finger can flex and let you advance to the next flute by just rotating the end mill and "clicking" to the next flute.

Why didn't I think of that?? Thanks 👍

That's what I used also nice and thin with a bit of spring. Good job well done.

When you consider that most people only ever use the bottom 3 mm of a cutter it is a waste of time grinding the whole length of the helix.

      Only sharpen what needs sharpening

I think it's a great little tool. From what I've seen elsewhere, it isn't chatter but the wheel needs truing? Guess the high spots will wear off eventually although removing and re-fitting on grinder spindle will probably move to a different location?

Thanks for your comment. I did improve the fit of the diamond wheel on the grinder. It's still not perfect and I didn't clock the run out but it works ok. I'm well aware that it's not precision engineering but I just wanted a method to get the job done. I guess it's an idea to be improved on.

Excellent video and camera work. Closeup work is hard. Is there any chance you could share the Excel spreadsheet you mentioned? This would be very handy as I am starting out.
    Thank you,

Hello Les. You sound like a local boy! I,m in Cwmbran and have a similar if not the same mill as you. Do you have another jig to sharpen the cutting face of the mill?

    • @Lesfac
      @Lesfac  2 роки тому +1

Hi Kevin. Yes I'm a Cwmbran boy. No I haven't done anything about sharpening the end of the cutters. I have some vague ideas but i dont get many cutters to sharpen. I have a small tiltable rest bolted down next to my bench grinder (Not the one in the video). My plan would utilise that and a way to present the cutter with the same depth for each flute.

I'm not a machinist at all, but it sounded like there was some chatter wen you were grinding. I wonder if the Chinese wheel isn't true, or if you're getting some vibrational defection in the chuck holder. Maybe there could be some method to hold the chuck holder firmly against the stop. Just my non-qualified observation. Very nice invention you've made.

Thanks for your comment Rob. You are probably right. I made the adapter bush for the diamond wheel as good as I could and I have not bothered to try and establish if the diamond wheel runs totally true. I may try and understand how it measures up but for now it is usable. As I said the whole thing is hardly precision engineering but I agree getting the wheel running true would be a good move. Thanks again for bothering to comment.
