I loved this idea for a bed! We just made one for my teenage daughter. We changed the mattress size to Twin XL so the cabinet sizes had to be changed. I also used Lowes cabinets out convenience and because of that the steps are not cabinets, instead my dad built that himself. I would never have thought of this on my own! Thank you! I have one VERY happy teenager!
Love the idea. Great for students who have to live in small flats but don't want to miss out on the storage space! That way you don't need extra wardrobes and can use the rest of the room for more desk space etc. And if you move out you can easily just rebuild it in the new flat.
That's gorgeous... My dad built my bed that I'm still sleeping on today (a more traditional bed).. Sadly he died of cancer when I was still young.. But he is always in my heart... when he and mom got married grandpa gave him furniture money but he got robbed on the street so he arranged with a friend to give him some wood for cheap and he built most of the furniture we still owned today... He was really handy and a quick learner....
love this, and I'm so grateful that you made a whole video showing how to adjust the bed to not attach to the walls! I haven't built anything more complex than assembling IKEA furniture since middle school (and even then I was never really all that into woodshop), so these videos are extremely helpful to me! I'm moving from my dorm to my first proper apartment in a few months and really want a bed like this in the alcove, but it's a bit difficult finding anything ready made that's both this practical and that'll fit in the narrow space (I have three walls that my bed will be flush up against), so attempting to make my own is more and more tempting!
This is FANTASTIC! I watched your previous bed DIY a year or so ago and was YEARNING for it, but I'm renting a 280 square feet apartment and there was no way I could (a) attach it to the wall and (b) keep the cabinets outside the bed. My bed situation is solved for the moment, but I'm planning to swap mattresses and bed size next time I move, and this will quite certainly be executed then! (Also, you remind me SO much of my own dad, when he built a bunk bed for my sister and I. That thing was the sturdiest piece of furniture to have ever been DIYed, and your two beds look similarly break-broof.)
My dad and I have been pouring over your previous video, and a few similar bed videos to figure out how to create a bed for my room. And now I think we found out answer! He liked the first one, but was worried about drilling into the dry wall as well the weight it would have to support, so this is a wonderful idea. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video! My brother and I are trying to learn bricolage and our summer project will be to make a free-standing bed inspired by yours. Your tool garage/shed is a d.r.e.a.m. Please keep posting DIY videos for us to learn from you. Bless you all the way from Spain.
Personally I like your first design better and want to build it for myself, but this one seems like it would help people who live in smaller spaces. I want to do 2 of these for my 2 children who share the same room. This design looks like it would free up more floor space for them.
I have actually considered making a bed like this 3 years ago, but out of shorter cabinets so I wouldn't need stairs. But I didn't have the knowledge of exactly how to do this. I'm handicapped and can't use stairs. And I hadn't thought of keeping 1 cabinet backless so you can put storage under the bed. I moved into in a small bedroom that doesn't have much room for dressers 4 years ago. Seeing this video, I wish I had done it. I guess I can still save up for it one day. Really love this idea.
My name is Sara and I love this video that you made!I gave me some great ideas to do to my bedroom. You see,my bed is a futon. It can turn into a bed and a couch.
Thank you for this awesome video! I think I would still prefer a version where I can let the mattress sink down a bit. I'm okay with the small trouble I have when changing the sheets.
I guess they were unable to figure this out for themselves? I am enjoying this .. I'm going to look for the original build to watch also. Thank you for sharing
I love your projects, but after looking at both designs, I think I'd build a wood frame to support the bed first and then add the cabinets and "steps" and configure them as desired. Your first design allowed extra surface, but then cabinets are flush with the side of the bed in the rebuilt design. Nice as the extra space is, the flush design uses less floor space. I'm just not crazy about working with sheets of plywood or melamine, I am always afraid of messing up those longer cuts, but I could (anybody could) have those cut at the store. I built a raised bed frame some years ago, but it wasn't designed to be disassembled and that is a problem as it's too big to move through a door in one piece. And cabinets will offer better organization than an open space. I used to work at an IKEA store and so I am familiar with the quality of the stuff they sell. The wood is often cheap (Soft wood, particle board, etc.) and screws easily strip through, so buyers should be aware of this. They do have nice hinges and fittings.
I could make this! It would be perfect for my 13 yr old cat who loves to sleep w/ me but has trouble jumping up on the bed. So much more storage than what I have now.
OMG thank you for making this. I wanted to make this platform bed but I am moving to an apartment so I wouldn't be able to attach it to the wall. Now I can make it this way. Thank you for doing this!!!
Wow! This is a fantastic video and design. Your workmanship is impressive. I was wondering can this design incorporate a second platform bed? I'm thinking maybe adding a twin bed... L-shaped design for a boys room..
Thank you for this video! I just discovered your first video of the bed today and thought i wish I could do this without attaching it to my wall and now I can :D
I have made a very similar bed and in the back I also have the same boards as in the front, so I didn't need to build anything with wood. It's at the wall without any hole in the wall.
Oh nooooooooooooo, you dismantled the original one that I liked so much. I wish someone had volunteered to have this bed in his/her room so you don't need to dismantle the first one you made........nooooooooooooooo.....
Hello HandyDadTV. I love this hack and your video instructions are fantastic. One of my grandfathers was a carpenter. I remember enjoying industrial arts class working with wood and metal. I can put this idea to use and even make my own alterations to fit my needs. Keep being handy!
I like the previous one. Ikea means compact clean room yet plenty of storage. Also, I like the space after the mattress. without those, I felt that I might fall from the bed & broke my bones, possible my neck.
I just love your diy videos! Would really like to make this bed for my apartment. The only thing I'm worrying about is whether is strong enough? Don't want it all to collapse while I'm on it with my friends watching a movie or sleeping with my boyfriend.. can you tell me whether it's strong enough to to hold at least two adults, or when I'm with friends even more?
This is awesome! We want to make this for our daughter. You mentioned in the video some people like the sunken mattress look. How do we go about doing that?!
You couldn’t do it with this version (freestanding) because the cabinets are under the mattress. But they’re not with the original version (attached to the wall). All you would do is lower the framing boards so the mattress sits lower behind the cabinets. But it reduces the space underneath.
allow me to start by saying this is sooooo beautiful and i really want it but i am worried about a few things the main on being how strong is this bed? will it hold two larger adults?
If you haven’t figured it out, I can help. You click the three dots in the top right corner, then press captions. Last you press English. But they definitely can mess up a few words!😂👍
I did make a king size added extra cabinets on side & put steps next to the wall, put book shelves at end so head of bed is at end with 55 inch tv mounted on wall
Hi! I would love to do this idea for our Rv. We have a queen and know a queen is 60 x 80. But I don’t know how big cabinets would be and if it would add too much weight for our Rv. I would love to know some advice from y’all though 😊 regarding this.
Prefer this version because it makes it so much easier to make the bed, I really hate those beds up against the wall where you have to climb on the bed to change the sheets, this version is so much more sensible. Thanks for the idea, will be trying it for myself but will probably leave a small piece without melamine to allow the cat easy entry to the space below.
Hello I love the bed would like to have one in my room .and you got plenty of space underneath bed to hide toys clothes book's to keep room clutter free.good idea
You can use the eket planner from the ikea for the stairs (i think it is that one). If you open it up on your laptop you see different cabinets you can use as a base. Then choose the one for a sloping ceiling and jmyou just need the measurements and ikea will come up with suggestions.
shouldn't IKEA hire you to be a consultant or something? what a brilliant job that you have done!
You're so considerate to rebuild the bed because your viewers couldn't build the original one
yeah!
Hear hear

i'm considering this for a twin bed as well for my teen, what size cabinets did you use?
@kirstenrodriguez3083 There’s a link in the description to all details.

Rebuilding the beautiful bed for the sake of your viewers is highly appreciated!! You're a super duper nice man!!💖
Thank you 😊

Keep on doing Ikea hacking projects!!! The creativity that you have always amazes me!
This is super genius! I went crazy when you dismantle all your hard work. Haha! Omg...

Who else is jealous of Becca?
+Edupuganti Saraswati I AM!!

I can't tell you how greatful I am for you showing this. This helps me out so much.
Oh thanks for saying that. 😊
This should get a lot of views!
I'm glad u made this because I live in an apartment and I cant but holes in the walls. this first video I was sold new subbie
My name is Sara and I love this video that you made!I gave me some great ideas to do to my bedroom. You see,my bed is a futon. It can turn into a bed and a couch.
I liked your first video and I was actually thinking of redoing my room but this video came along... I don't know which is better... Both are great!
I really want my dad to make this bed for me!!! He makes cabinets and stuff for work so I think it would be pretty easy for him.
Thank you for this awesome video!
I think I would still prefer a version where I can let the mattress sink down a bit. I'm okay with the small trouble I have when changing the sheets.

I love this bed. If I ever move to my dream tiny home, I am going to size it for my twin XL
You could do that!
You're the best HandyDadTV!!!!!!!

Still the best dad EVER!
I like this and your gentle manner.♡
Omg that hobby iron is so cute.
I have made a very similar bed and in the back I also have the same boards as in the front, so I didn't need to build anything with wood. It's at the wall without any hole in the wall.
This is awesome! This might even get more views then the original eventually. Thanx!
can you be my dad? it would be nice to have a dad that can build without destroying half the house. lol
TheYukiKaneSama ikr! I wish mine was this handy!
be happy with your own dad, every dad is unique in some way.
TheYukiKaneSama I did my own storage bed thanks to his ideas and I think mine came out even better where can I send you pictures.

Oh nooooooooooooo, you dismantled the original one that I liked so much. I wish someone had volunteered to have this bed in his/her room so you don't need to dismantle the first one you made........nooooooooooooooo.....
He was going to redo it anyway calm down
Loving these videos, it's a shame I don't have the skills or the access to the tools
I love both versions! Now can you do one for a queen sized bed! :-)
Watch the Q&A!
This bed is awesome but a WHOLE lot of work. I need someone this handy in my life. I want this bed in king size!
Two lessons I taught my girls:
1. Handy beats handsome.
2. Choose wisely.
This is great, I can now make this bed! :0
Thank you for sharing your ideas, i'd rather prefer the attached wall version, but this is cool too. Keep it up!
I am 7 years late but a big thanks for that follow up video. Hope you are well :)
My pleasure! Thanks for saying hi. 👋🏻
Your doggie is so adorable 💜
Thanks 😊
Hello HandyDadTV. I love this hack and your video instructions are fantastic. One of my grandfathers was a carpenter. I remember enjoying industrial arts class working with wood and metal. I can put this idea to use and even make my own alterations to fit my needs. Keep being handy!
Thanks so much, Wendy! ❤
I imagine a ton of people going, "YES, this is exactly what I want!" And then the first night they roll right off and hit the floor. *lol*
I like the previous one. Ikea means compact clean room yet plenty of storage. Also, I like the space after the mattress. without those, I felt that I might fall from the bed & broke my bones, possible my neck.
I like both versions! Genius! You just got a new subbie!
All of these are very nice! Thank you for posting these!!!

I just love your diy videos! Would really like to make this bed for my apartment. The only thing I'm worrying about is whether is strong enough? +xTammyYx We've had three adults on ours. But you can build it stronger if it worries you.
Thank you for this video
great video !
What an awesome Dad! You're great. Love the 2nd version.
Thanks :)
You deserve more likes, views and followers!
+Iden Li Thanks so much. :)

The way I’ve built it, it has had three adults on it. But watch the Q&A videos because I show ways to make it stronger if you want.
Im going to make the original one, not the free standing one, but I was wondering what kind of ikea cabinets you used.
Hi, my version of this bed is done. :) thanks for the inspiration. the bed is so helpful.
Email me some pictures! chris@handydad.tv
could you add captions so my deaf dad can help me make this bed? 🥰
exoclue, there already is, it’s called “automatically generated”
@@kras5737 they can be very inaccurate might accidentally end up with something totally different be accident !!😂
If you haven’t figured it out, I can help. You click the three dots in the top right corner, then press captions. Last you press English. But they definitely can mess up a few words!😂👍
really cool 😊 thanks for responding to the comments in that great way 😊👍
Gotta love the HDTV shirt 😍
You can have one! handydad.tv/merch
I would love to have you as my dad!
Thanks this is my dream bed but all beds like this are to big so thanks u have made my wish come true
Most welcome 😊
I wish this was made for a queen sized bed. I still want to make it though.
mackenzie valentine you can make it for a queen bed. You probably would need a extra cabinet
Same, I’m hoping my boyfriend (he’s an engineer) can redo the blueprint to fit a queen bed
I want it for a twin sized bed lol.
I did make a king size added extra cabinets on side & put steps next to the wall, put book shelves at end so head of bed is at end with 55 inch tv mounted on wall
BTW UR AMAZING DAD
This would be perfect for my daughter she loves a high bed and I'm sick of the pallets she has under her mattress
Hi! I would love to do this idea for our Rv. We have a queen and know a queen is 60 x 80. But I don’t know how big cabinets would be and if it would add too much weight for our Rv. I would love to know some advice from y’all though 😊 regarding this.
I might love this one even more, but I would still want some kind of support holding the matrass in place.
Thank you dad
well done, again.
OMG Thanks so much i will make this bed i love it
Absolutely awesome! Nice job.

This would be great for a rental
I love ikea Hack!!

I am making my bed in march thank you very much
Youre so talented. This is great!

Love this Diy. Thanks
Guys, what if Becca is the dog
+Annapko Haha the dog is Oscar. I'm not that crazy.
LOL funny comment and a funny response equals an awesome thread!
Hello I love the bed would like to have one in my room .and you got plenty of space underneath bed to hide toys clothes book's to keep room clutter free.good idea
Yes you should build one.
Thats a super cute tee shirt
What are the final measurements of the bed for a queen, full and twin? I’m trying to figure out if this would fit in my daughters room.
I plan on trying this but adapting it for a twin mattress as we have small bedrooms
Good! It’s beer done before.
It is beautiful😊
great job
AWESOME! I am happy that I have found your YT channel!!
i really want to build this bed with my dad, but im still trying to figure out how to make this work with a twin mattress
Please, please, please.
I can not find the cabinets
You can use the eket planner from the ikea for the stairs (i think it is that one). If you open it up on your laptop you see different cabinets you can use as a base. Then choose the one for a sloping ceiling and jmyou just need the measurements and ikea will come up with suggestions.
I mean the platsa planner
It's just incredible
