Say Hello to The Death Metal Dodge Charger! Finnegan's Garage Ep.76
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- This video offers an update on the "Trade My Truck" debacle and my 1969 Dodge Charger, which Kibbe alerted me was for sale last year. The charger is a legit barn find, stashed away in Indiana for 50-plus years before it was drug outside and put on eBay. I bought it, Tony Angelo and I filmed a Roadill episode about reviving it, and then the motor died one summer night last year.
The drivetrain consists of a 383ci Dodge big-block, which is backed by a Silversport Transmissions six-speed conversion kit. The kit bolts a Tremec Magnum manual gearbox into the B-body with ease. The car is called Death Metal because it doesn't drive straight, the four-wheel truck drum brakes don't work that well, and the rollcage might actually be more dangerous than not having one at all. Nevertheless, I love the car and in this episode we'll show you what broke and how we fixed it. I think you'll be surprised!
Here's a link to that cool MSD ready-to-run distributor that we got from Summit Racing:

Thanks for sticking with UA-cam Mike! I know a bunch of guys really appreciate that.....
absolutely sir... Im 1 of those guys..
Im just glad theres other guys out there turning wrenches still.
Yeah like $5 a month for motortrend is so much to ask for
Michael Smith when you add it to internet bill, Netflix, Hulu, cell phone bill, potentially cable bill, and the other services not mentioned, yeah it’s definitely more than it’s worth.
@@Chevelle602 when discovery is gobbling up all my favorite shows and either running them into the ground yeah im not going to give them any money to do so.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how freaking awesome the Charger is?
it's my second favorite car but my all-time favorite POS.
I don't think you realize that at this point You're more legit roadkill than the whole show. Thanks for keeping it real and putting out great content.
I agree. This has become my new Roadkill AND Engine Masters to boot. Fuck MTOD- you can't watch shit on it in Aust. They wouldn't even accept my credit card details, so over time I've just lost interest
Roadkill is more than a tv show. It's an ethic, a way to live a life that isn't dependent on the price of your ride but rather the passion you have for having fun with it.
@@FinnegansGarage I hear ya loud and clear- I live it too. From an '83 VH Commodore with a built Aussie injected 5L with an old GT42 and a T5 that has the ratty muscle car look to a super clean sleeper R31 Skyline with a built RB30 with a GTX3582R, manualizied Aussie Trimatic with 3800 Stall, mech locker and adjustable coilovers from an S13 Silvia that runs 9.80 on a 235 DR off the foot brake- the trans isn't built for the power the old RB makes and it runs that on a soft 1.80 60ft so that trans survives!!! I'm all about it my man. Cheers for the chat! Love your channel. It's prob my fav on YT...
the other guy was weird an annoying anyway , love miks content
Owen did u just call frieburger weired
I'm so glad you started making UA-cam videos dude, keep it up
I heard they still make roadkill but I honestly don’t give a fuck. This is what I wanted anyway.
@@spencurai
Yea i liked roadkill but not enough to buy it, this is workin.
@@MrTheHillfolk It's 5 bucks a month. Check your couch.for loose change. It's quality for cheap.
We made roadkill by all the likes and subs on youtube. Then it was MT and adds every 5mins and nothing on youtube anymore. Finn and MCM for me
@@MrTheHillfolk Can people shut the fuck up about Motortrend making a financial decision about their content for once, or are we still going to keep hearing the moaning and bitching by cheapskates for 5 more years?
Your "media room" reminds me of the porn-rooms that used to reside in the back of sketchy convenience stores (minus the urinal, that'd be REALLY weird). Hahah! Not that I ever went into those rooms...hey, look! A squirrel...
lolol You can't peddle that backwards fast enough friend.
Used to?!
soul conjecture We all were clueless young men at one point in our lives. As long as you were wired correctly & the alarms bells went off once you realized what you walked into & you got the hell out of there you’re ok.
@@Properformancenutritioncom Hey bruh, all those healthy supplements you're taking may be stunting your sense of humor. Just sayin'...
Yeah my friend talked me into one of those rooms once when we where "kids", when the store manager told us to get out of there. My friend said loudly "I told you we shouldn't go in there"......
Thanks for keeping the spirit of RK alive in the real world... without too many corporate nit wits getting in the way.
Thanks for staying on UA-cam with us common folk, we enjoy your content Mike! Keep up all the shenanigans!
It's super awesome to see a video of you working and just doing stuff, not trying to sell welders or tools. I understand they sponsor you, just nice to see a working video! Keep up the great work Mike!
Two rules of hot rodding. #1 Nothing is ever a bolt in. Nothing. #2 Changing one part from stock will require changing 5 other things to make it work.
My wife sometimes asks me why I like watching you guys working on cars so much, since I hardly do any work on our own vehicles.
I just figured it out. It helps me remind that as soon as I myself touch something in the car or bike, I kill something else :-D
When I watch your YT episodes it tickles that itch though, it's like working on the car without all the downsides.
Thanks guys, you make me smile everytime you upload :-)
And like @B Caldwell said; thanks for sticking with YT, I'm a paid motortrend subscriber too but I really enjoy the less edited content, feels more genuine :-), although Roadkill was the sole reason I subscribed to Motortrend :-)
"I'll be back........keep your phone on". Spoken by a guy with complete (or not) confidence.
Finnegan: "We're not nerds."
Also Finnegan: Has a bunch of white boards with properly maintained lists.
Different kind of nerding.
I always liked the style of 60's chargers since I was a kid, but THIS is a whole new beast in itself ! Keep up the good work, love the vids !!
I love that there's no sugar coating things. It makes you feel like this is a real down to earth show and also being there
Mike, I saw a picture once of someone using an Automatic Transmission case as a sink for their mancave bathroom. I bet either yourself or your buddies have one lying around
I've seen that, too, and it looks awesome.
I just want to say, Square Force One is looking SWEET on those aluminum 19.5s. With the chrome on the truck and the graphics it just looks so cool.
OMG the John Chase clip at the beginning was great :D
crankysports Finnegan strait up Roasted John chase Haha
"John the wheels are falling off my Chase"
Have to give props to Mike John and crew, what they had to do to get on the line.
@@danielbrealey2924 Jon is a good guy and I do like his car. I was just messing around.
Daniel Brealey I met John in person and he's a really cool guy
@@Wreckitralph54 Daniel Brealey on the other hand...
Love your show and what you do... but please balance your audio's in post. One minute I can't hear you, then my ears are blasted. Keep up the great work fella!
In the end always feels good to find the problem, thanks for posting again.
I'm not have a good day in fact its horrible. I spare the details but watching your videos cheers me up everytime, I thank you for that mike.
I think fin is secretly a dodge guy. Got a hemi in a chevy. Got a charger. Got a squarebody with a cummins from in a dodge truck 1 would thing
j g Yeah he might be a little bit weird. Might even have a plum crazy car we don’t know about.
I mean Cummins isn't a Dodge thing, but that's just the easiest place to get them. A squarebody with a Cummmins is one of the best trucks you can have.
@@boostaddict_ thts y i said a cummins from a dodge. Dodge wont try to make there own so they out source
I don't. They tried to pull the timing cover off with the bolts still in the bottom. 🤣
I love watching this channel. Just when I think I have terrible luck, you remind me how easy I have it! Kudos!
The feels like Roadkill material. Am I allowed to watch it?
I believe so. this is America after all.
damage control
That pin issue - and the nylon gear, yeh - back in the 70's nylon was used from everything from the yellow shirt I had at 14 to this 73 Ford - 351C. Cam timing gear. In the end, I made the pin, using a drill clamped in a vice and rough files to hog off the steel to a 400 grit paper finish. Took me 4 hrs to get it turned and fitting the cam and new chain and gear. I always learn something here! Cheers
You are livin the dream boys, keep it up for us workin stiffs
Thanks for again showing your struggles and confirming that guys like me aren't the only ones. Looking forward to the episode of Roadkill with your Charger. That thing is so cool, and I'm a Chevy guy.
Dodge if you see this I would love to go to roadkill nights! I'm 33 born with spina bifida and love everything Mike Finnegan gets into!
Arizona Supercars I am fro the UK and we no of him over here. Says it all yes
Why on earth is that thing so good on the eyes. The tire/wheel combo? I love it!
Man I hope we see this thing line up with the General Mayhem at Roadkill Nights!!! Seeing both those cars going down the street together would be amazing!!!
Glad you still put stuff on yt. I'm VERY disappointed MT pulled all the old UA-cam videos of roadkill after being there for many years of enjoyment. Love your show.
"shes wallered out, shouldnt be that way. Not if you wanna keep her around" lmao
hahaha
That's what he said
casada70 when Mike lived in Southern California he would have said it,s wore out. now that he lives in the South he has to talk different.
lilorbie lilorbie no it’s Midwest talk from an episode when finnegan and friberger stopped by murder nova’s compound.. they used the word
Let It Reign i know of the episode that you are talking about. It,s also how they talk in the South. and it was not murder nova,s com pound it was big chiefs.
It is good to see these Chargers still around. Thank you
I was going to ask if you contacted Uncle Tony's Garage...He is the MOPAR King.
Na that be Nick Panaritis from Nick's Garage check him out !
This is the one car i'd really like to see brought up to standard for actual stock car racing, would be an awesome base if you wanted to compete in some events properly, and finish what the car was intended to do all those years ago. Would look unreal all cleaned up
Yes run it in vintage classes as I would think they would have such a class now because I know they have them for the older stock cars and midget classes !
You have awesome friends and picked a good place to live. Down the road from a summit racing warehouse and all. The kings of crunch time get it done again! Lol
I have an Accel yellow cabinet given to me by Honest Charley's of Chattanooga Tennessee. 1984! Flash back of good times and local cops had a $500 bounty for first to stop my 66 Chevelle. NOS and Doug Nash 5 speed kept me safe from road pirates....lol! Love y'all videos, from Georgia and just old hot rodder... thanks!!!
Finney thank you for the previous video about your placecrafts fuel tank mounts. I ended up copying you with my Hondo last weekend and got did if my thru-hull tank mounts. I hope to see more jet boat stuff on the channel!
Huh. It's weird seeing a PC test bench on a Car channel. My hobbies are overlapping.
Same.
Oh just wait until open source ECUs and BCUs get up to speed.
You'd think that tech geeks would be into Teslas, but a lot of PC builders are also car guys.
Thinking fat boy done drank to much. Eyes like two piss holes in snow. Don't think finny boy. Know that much
Guess we the nerds that do know what to do with it
Wish the vid was longer and more in depth, but it takes the edge off from no new roadkill on UA-cam. So thankyou very much for posting the vid,
cam dowl pin didnt just fail for no reason you have valve train bind or excessive load which if you didnt address it will just break another dowl pin
Or the pulley was loose.
Yes and the pin hole in the cam gear is still wallered out. Replaced the PIN now you need to replace the cam gear
So cool of you for sticking with you tube Mike really greatfull 😊👍🤜
Please Mike, for the love of all that is fast and sketchy, invest in a decent clip on mike for sound. I've been to a lot of races and my hearing ain't so good no more. Please. Btw, awesome vid. Keep up the good work and talk louder. ;)
molskimauler I'm right there with you man. I'm 42, been a track rat since I was in single digits and I can't hardly hear a damn thing, lol.
Pretty sure he uses a go pro not an option sadly
@@ts6141 You can use an external mic with a GoPro, plugs in the side.
This guy is right, take a mic from the podcast equipment
what????? (musicians punchline)
As I was thinking to myself these boys need Boshears(I'm phonetic, sue me) to save the day... He comes stumbling through the door with a cam. The look on his face was almost that of a first responder coming upon an accident scene. Thank you for your service!!
See you at Roadkill Nights! Let me know if you think the Death Metal Charger can take on my bone stock 2012 Regal GS w/ 6spd manual.
Thank God, I get to see a charger on a good channel that's from roadkill.. I've been waiting forever to see one of these on Mike's channel.
A car of yours broke down while newbern was driving? No way, lol love the channel keep the video's coming.
I loved seeing the charger coming up Sugar Creek road/Boardtown road near my home in Blue Ridge Georgia....I knew exactly where he was coming around the curve at Lucius road...and that barn...I'm glad he didn't wreck the death metal charger...nascarlo had already been wrecked once at a California dirt track...I think Perris Auto Speedway.
How tight was that cam gear bolt? I would bet it was loose. I do enjoy your show though. Thanks for the show.
From all of us viewing this Thank You for always making badass videos on youtube mike! And that charger is a beast 😈
Had that happen once... sent me the wrong push rods that were to long and making the valves meet the pistons. Kept shearing the cam pin.🙄
Sounds like you had RB pushrods in a B block unless they were custom made and cut too long ?
Awesome, come home from work and there is a new Finnegan's Garage video ftw! Man cave side looks awesome, love the media storage!
Something caused that dowel pin to shear. Sprocket bolt not tight enough? Cam bearing partially seized?
bolt not tight, no loctite either
It would almost have to have been loose in order to move enough to shear.
@@CCW1911 its certainly possible that it wasn't tight enough, although it Felt tight when I took it apart.
Improperly hardened dowel pin sold with a counterfeit part number from China.
@@dennisp.2147 Unlikely as the dowel pin is for location only, not to transmit drive to the cam. It will only see shear stress if the bolt is eithet not correctly torqued or the torque exceeds the capacity of the bolted joint (e.g. cam bearing seizure).
Saw the episode on Motor Trend channel. It was great. Thanks for sharing your fun time 😂🏁👍
I love how your staying with UA-cam. Your more roadkill then the roadkill show at this point. No offence to David
Hey guys, nice project. You have to love the jobs that go way further than the first issue, it just makes us faster at doing that job again! Lol
The real question is can you turn the charger into a ramptruck somehow?
No it's not lol
Shure
Yes
You CAN NOT CREAT or destroy matter, not possible
Brendan Marriott yes but matter can change and some times it’s quite beautiful
Dowels aren't meant to hold the timing set, the bolts are. Someone forgot to torque them, use proper bolts, or loctite. Dowels are meant for cold hand assembly.
If it had the original style 3 bolt cam it wouldn't have broke
Now we know why they used 3 bolt cams
@@mitchfleming274 this.
3 bolt cams only came on Hemis max wedges and 440-6 motors. So no it's not original to this motor.
@@TL-angzarr what is motor orginly from
This car is so much better in person, The craftsmanship is on point. Seeing that and the Mayhem side by side I have to say I like death metal charger better.
Perfect timing, I just got on lunch break
Well, it wasn't perfect timing...
Mike thank you for sticking with UA-cam...great content ...
Just slap an MSD box on it and you won't need a module!
The Charger is "MINT!!" . I want to thank you for staying with UA-cam and doing what you do best. What. Part. Of Maryland? You gotta have some crab cakes. Being in the Annapolis area the bay life requires it.
the distributor is on the wrong end. LOL
Nah. Right end but it is. Crooked and off center.
@@SPUPRR Yep lol
The manufacturer put it on the easy end to get to, as they knew their brand would need worked on often! LOL My square body trucks have them in the back.......do you know how many times I have cussed those things out for being so hard to get to? It looks right for it to be on the back, but is a real pain. - Chevy driver
I drooled all over this car when it was in Lineville AL, very cool ride, I just hate Finnegan wasn’t there.
luv the vids but please work on volume... up down up down lol
Some added clearance will be necessary. True that, Mike . That 68 Charger is awesome. Keep spinning those wrenches
Yes i did see you Kick the bucket of gas
Not good but funny
John's death wobble at 0.55!! Well played Sir.
This is one of my favorite roadkill cars! It just looks so mean!
Hay man ,I know how you feel, I'm sorry for your time and loss 😟 but once you find the problem, it's ALL Worth it, GOOD Job guys ,just Be SAFE. OK.
God that charger is on my list of models to make. Finn was so impressed by my stubby bob build, I think he would enjoy this even more.
hell yeah!
That cylinder head clearancing gives me Deja Vu from that episode of Hot Rod Garage where Tony and Lucky where putting those heads on their Fury Roadmaster. Same exact issue!
Collapsed lifters are common on big block Mopars, they'll pump up eventually...I've never seen a cam shear the dowel pin off of it before, so that's a new one for me...
You and frieburger should make an episode working on blasphemi or something. Just like old school roadkill. No motortrend bs. But love the channel, keep up the good work!
A good friend of mine used to buy the cars and trucks off of the American airmen when they went home and didn't want to transport them back across the "pond". I saw Cougars, Satellites and Super-bees - most force-fed 440 lumps. I took a 440 "Blues Mobile" (was that a monaco?) up the road from my place. It was painted green and white and looked like Jake and Elwood's car - even down to "To Protect and Serve" logo on the wing (fender !!) . All of the cars were cool but yes, Electricguy, when he got hold of Chargers (on 2 occasions), guys came-by just to "look" ! Before I go to the "V8 - run wot u brung" in the sky, I want to "drive angry" a '68/'69 charger - black paint and plenty of rubber !! I may have to get over and spend a holiday (vacation) in your "Sunshine States" ! Mike, please say "hi" to David Freiburger - the 2 of you were awesome on Roadkill. Happy new year to you all . Regards, Clive . (Surrey , England )
I just bought my VIP tickets for roadkill nights so I'll get a chance to meet you up in Pontiac. I'm driving my 1973 as chevelle from Gaffney South Carolina all the way up. I have been working on this car night and day for the past month to get it read. So hear is to hoping I make it up there. Thank you for the great content
