I think you can get by without cement. I have no experience with this, but a customer review (krward04) on the amazon website for this gate said:
"-if youre installing any pegs into dirt, grass, gravel, etc...go to home depot and buy the 3/4" galvanized 18" nipples. Use the hammer drill to drill the hole as usually and then hammer the pipe into the ground, leaving the top level with the ground. Drop in your peg and youve got a much more stable foundation for your pole. You can even go a little further and fill it with spray foam insulation, what for it to dry, then put the peg in after drilling the hole so its snug"

Any time the fence must be installed into grass or dirt; the safest installation method is to use concrete footers.

Great question! This gate is flimsy as all hell. I'm repairing someone's mistake that drilled into pavers block. I guess Concrete is ideal but it's obvious that this guy is getting sponsored.
