Water clarity on Apopka reminds me of Lake Carlton, lucky if you can see 6 inches. I'm pretty sure the Magnolia Park ramp is 24 hours. The McDonald Canal ramp would probably be closer for you with no tolls but doesn't open until 8am. That's where the shad harvesting operation is based out of too.
Thanks for the info! I’m actually southeast of Apopka. Lake view’s closer by a little, and better positioned on the lake to where I’d probably want to fish, but that waters skinny on that ramp!
@@bmazfishing haha, I assumed you were further north because of the Harris Chain videos. I live in Lockhart. I haven't been on Apopka much, but I will probably hit it a few times this spring. From what I understand a lit of guys prefer the southern end anyway.
Gizzard shad feed on algae on the bottom of the lake, stirring up sediments and clouding the water. Shad excrete nutrients back into the water, recycling nutrients from the bottom that can feed more algae. Thus, by removing these fish, additional nutrients will not be recycled into the lake to impair its water quality.
Yup....that's the same boat ramp. Beautiful park, and great parking, just a God-awful ramp. For whatever reason I thought that park was the actual city of Apopka. Anyway, it looks like you did exactly what I did. Couldn't find any even remotely clear, deeper water, so you just fished in the shallows in what...maybe 2ft of water? And, you didn't have any issues getting your boat back onto the trailer?? I know this much...I'll never use that ramp gain. I'll drive the extra 25min to the McDonald canal. Which, btw, that canal ramp looked like it's roughly 2mi from the lake? Does that sound right? Btw, I had no idea that gizzard shad contributed to water quality.....who would've thought.
They are in there. I've never had a crazy day of fishing there but I've caught them. Very north end by outlet is generally clearer and there is an underwater spring in the handle area where the water is clear (but I never had much luck there). I think they should be in the pads by now or very soon. Some videos on YT of guys doing pretty good on apopka. Good luck!
Only luck I have on Apopka is flipping/pitching. Other than that havnt done much. Going to be an interesting few weeks for the chain with all of the Tournaments coming into town. I couldn't launch on Griffin this morning not a single spot to park!
Gourds neck area. Off shore grass on the north side west shoreline cattails that are scattered

Gizzard shad consume calorie sources high in phosphate. So removing the shad removes phosphate and helps the lake recover.

Yea that magnolia park, the video scaling the truck was southeast in winter garden. Much shallower
