  • This might be of interest to the superfans out there.
I was a young cub reporter for my high school newspaper in Eugene, OR and was also a Gordon Lightfoot fan, so when his concert was announced for the recently completed Hult Center for the Performing Arts, I couldn't miss my chance at an interview.
I assumed correctly that Gord and the band would be staying at the adjacent Hilton, so the afternoon of the show, I called the hotel and asked to be connect to Mr. Lightfoot's manager (this was before I got to know Barry Harvey, and Anne in the office at EMP). The phone rang for awhile in Barry's room and then I was bounced back to the receptionist. I took a deep breath and asked to then be connected directly with Mr. Lightfoot. She did it. The phone rang and a very sleepy-sounding Mr. Lightfoot answered. I had woken him up. But he invited me to "come down to the hall" around 5:30pm for a chat.
When I arrived at the stage entrance, I knocked and Barry Harvey opened the door. I told him I was here for the interview. Of course, Gord hadn't mentioned it to Barry, but Barry let me in anyway and asked me to wait in Gord's dressing room. I could hear the band onstage, doing their soundcheck. It was "The Wreck"... I was insanely nervous, and as you will hear, also very green. Go easy on the comments regarding my interview technique...this was all new to me and I didn't hide my amateur status well. As you can hear, Gord and the guys were nothing but kind and generous with their time and information.
Around 26:00, we're joined by Terry Clements and shortly after that, by Barry Harvey, whose presence certainly told me that my time was up and I skedaddled. The concert was great. I also have a recording of that which I may post though the quality isn't too hot.
    Enjoy!

I finally get to hear an interview that talks about the guitars. It sounded like a pick was dropped in one and shaken out onto the floor as well as guitar strings being cut and replaced early on. Thanks for posting this.

This was the year Gord' quit the booze, he quit on Labor day so he was probably struggling to not pick up the bottle again. I really want to get my hands on 'Dream Street Rose', 'Shadows', 'Salute' and 'East of Midnight' since those were his last three albums on vinyl until he published 'Solo'. I wonder if his two 90's albums were ever published on vinyl or cassette since I only came across the CD ones.
