In 1998, a huge storm swept through Tennessee and felled some historic trees on Andrew Jackson's former estate, The Hermitage. In order to assist the museum with repair efforts, Gibson took the Hickory and Poplar lumber from the wreckage and transformed them into some pretty unique guitars. Today, we talk about the 1998 Gibson "Old Hickory" Les Paul.

Seventh president was Robert E. Lee
I did not know the history, but as a history buff, I'm fascinated with that guitar! Those trees were alive and seen by one of the most pivotal presidents of our country. That's fascinating to me
@@maspesasmasperras5554 lol
Where did you find an old hickory ? I remember these way back.. couldn't find any. But . Damn.. now next get a peter green/ Kirk Hammett 50.000 Les Paul.. and I would even be more impressed than the I already am .. lol
@@scottykingdavid They pop up on Reverb every now and then
I have been to this museum for a fancy wedding. Mr. Jackson himself was a tough and a awful person. A man of his time.
You buried the lead on the trees they used to make these guitars. Those trees were originally taken as saplings from each of the battlefields that then General Jackson fought at and transplanted at The Hermitage many, many years ago. That’s why their loss in the storm was such a big loss.
Yeppers! Amazing that he owns SO MANY pieces of American history in 1 piece!
*lede
A bulldozer and a Walmart would be an improvement to the Hermitage
Yep we love our tree built guitars
Honestly, never thought I'd see Trogly bust out some Dead Kennedys but I'm definitely happy he did. Holiday In Cambodia is such a killer song and that guitar part is just unreal
Lol
Known as the Indian Killer guitar
I never expected to hear you play "Holiday in Cambodia", and it was especially surprising to hear it during the demo for a guitar made for Jackson's estate
A DK reference on presidents day!
U surprised me trogly!! Kudos!! Whats the significance btw presidents day/Jackson and the DKs?? I know there must or i havent been watching u daily fir 2yrs
He's a guitar hero fan
@@DJVolte Isn't that done on a little plastic guitar or do you actually learn guitar from it? More of a Halo guy myself, so...🎮
@@cataclysmicconverter it is yeah. But it has great track lists. I love guitar hero even as a pretty decent guitarist.
I'm actually surprised you did the deal. That seller sounds like he had some "stories," and would've made me nervous as hell. I'd bet the local "phantom owner" was him. Beauty of a guitar tho! I love that top and back.
I was thinking the same thing. The "I sold it locally but I'll get it back for you for extra" sounds like a load of BS to me. A lot of flaws weren't disclosed, etc. I hope Austin left him a mediocre rating on reverb to warn other buyers.
@@r33th Agreed. His little stories absolutely sound like horseshit. Guy sounds very shady, to say the least
Yeah, I'd say they were well aware of who the interested UA-camr was and figured to fleece him as much as possible. Especially as he came back after it again for a couple thousand more. Maybe with the right accountant it can be considered a business expense to write off or something.
@@cataclysmicconverter Totally seems like a fish story, doesn't it? I'm betting the guy never sold it, and ALL of that money went to him
Gotta believe that karma will even the score.
Does this come with the Trail of Tears commemorative strings?
Ouch
We won a war. Get over it.
Gibson choked by not inlaying that on the fingerboard.
There’s something beautiful about hearing Trogly play Dead Kennedys on a president “tribute” guitar on President’s Day.
You got Old Hickory! Was it on my suggestion? What a piece of history.
The Old Hickory 029 "Tulip Poplar" top and body is from a species of Magnolia Tree (Family Magnoliaceae) and NOT from "poplar" as most North Americans know Populus spp (Family Salicaceae- eg Aspen, Cottonwood). But it's gorgeous, uniquely grained neck, top and body for sure. Should be way more pop(u)lar than it is.
Definitely a different poplar than what I was referring to, so that's a nice clarification. 👍
Very interesting guitar. Definitely a collection keeper.
Notice the trees uprooted formed the violin shape that lined the driveway. Went there as a kid long before the storms in the 70's and it's an interesting place, as is his own history for better or worse.
Getting a CCR vibe from "Old Hickory" really beautiful piece and that one spot on the side at the switch looks like an eye
Hey Trog! Not all that far from you, in Pennsylvania, is a town named Hermitage, with a township and high school called Hickory…both after Andrew Jackson’s home and nickname, “Old Hickory”
OK, I'm, usually sick about the prices of these things, but *this is beautiful!* That might be the coolest Les Paul I've ever seen Oo
Actually, Trogs seemed pretty sick about it. Loved the angry playing though!
I agree about the looks of this thing!!! It’s beautiful!
What an amazing gradient on the back!! Insane
Hey everyone! What an absolutely beauty of a Les Paul!
Wow. Double the price and twice the non disclosure of actual condition even stings on THIS side of the screen.
yo, that bridge sounds BRIGHT bro! damn, i wish gibson did more les pauls with those woods!
That Guitfiddle is Gorgeous and even more beautiful on my wide-screen;)
The presidential silent guitar
That's an amazing looking guitar. Love it.
Poplar is one of the softest hardwoods used for guitars (Basswood and Pine beating it out). Put a Nitrocellulose Lacquer Clear finish on that and, yeah, you get those witness lines after awhile. It will happen to Alder, too. Wood moves, and that type of Lacquer is pretty brittle, so....That is a stunning historic piece! Perfect for a museum!
Love it. That guitar will increase in value. It's got wood from the Hermitage. In my eye that makes it super special.
Gorgeous wood on that guitar. With the history on it that's a win! And I'm a Canadian.
I was surprised at the echo at the demo intro. I was more surprised when I recognized the song. Been listening to Bedtime for Democracy lately. Great Wall is nice and fast.
That was one crazy storm I lived about a half mile fron The Hermitage. My son was upset the tornado did not come by our house.
You are an absolute legend for playing Dead Kennedys on an Old Hickory!
Love the wood, it has so much character
Hope you keep this one. Despite its flaws, it’s unique woods, and inlays and natural colors it’s really pretty
You come up with some interesting stuff. Nice piece for your museum.
I like the looks of that Rainbow Poplar body wood. Great contrasts. Interesting commemorative model.
Wonderful looking guitar.
I've always wanted one of these guitars. My in-laws live only a few miles from The Hermitage. The tornado that took out these poplars came up the hill into Wilson County, jumped over the in-law's home, and dropped a few hundred yards from there continuing its path. I had spent lunch hour with my boss that day chasing all over Williamson County looking for tornadoes. Quite the day.
Gibson should make more guitars like this, the overall esthetics is awesome.
" There's nothing like a good piece of Hickory." Clint Eastwood as Preacher- Pale Rider
been wanting a video on these for a while, glad you finally made one!
It’s a natural “Scorpions” guitar. I love that wood. Sometimes poplar wood will even have green and purple in it .
There will be a chibson of this guitar next week on ebay for $245.00
The Hermitage may have had some walking sticks made from the trees. A genuine Hickory Stick.
Old Hickory. That is freaking Awesome. WOW!
In the late 70's I worked in a very small Pro Shop music store. The Gibson rep brought in a Les Paul that was made of poplar but had no binding. The whole guitar was painted royal blue ..a dark blue that looked like blue ink. Even the the top of the headstock was in this blue. It had dot markers and a rosewood neck. It had 2 HB PU that had white bezels and white pick guard. It was meant to be a budget guitar and hadn't been named but I was told it would not be called a Les Paul though it clearly was. I asked about other colors and I was told only blue and if it sold than a an opaque red. I can not remember it ever coming out.
Saw 2 of these during one of my Nashville trips. One at the Heritage Welcome Center & one in a glass case at Opryland hotel across from the WSM studio. Both were beautiful. Wanted to buy one but had Just bought a new LP Standard & a Fender 90's Tele Thinline.
The wood grain looks like some cool burst job.
Very nice
Very unique Les paul.that poplar looks nice
Yep,
OH 121 on Reverb at 5500.00 as of 2/20/2023 the listing shows four years old. Love the color variation on this one though!
Poplar is used in MIM Fenders, or was, as it sounds nice. It's just not that pretty and can be a bit greenish without figuring, so it's covered in a solid finish when used. Like basswood, basically. That hickory is a heavy, dense hardwood and you can hear the brightness coming through. Same with oak and likely why neither are used for guitars.
I dig the tone.., from here it was much brighter than I would have expected. Funny, just as soon as I start to believe that wood isn’t as important as pickups for tone (on electrics), this model makes me question that.
right? that guitar makes the humbuckers sound like single coils. even more bright and sparkly on the bridge.
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸 🙌
Hell yeah trogley is on
DK superb demo today :)
That’s an amazing top but the writing on the fretboard and the presidents face on it are elements that aren’t for me.
Yeah, I must agree on that one. I mean... maybe some script lettering? Anything but giant stencil blocks. Makes the Pepsi and NASCAR versions look classy! 😄
Correct.....how bout split parallelogram with the dark poplar inlaid on that light hickory board
I guess the hard wood neck adds brightness..?
I like the tones. Brighter than normal.
for what it's worth I think this one looks the absolute best of all of them. I would also overpay for that two tone thing
Well now you have inspired me to go back and relearn some Dead Kennedys.
The only nickname I ever knew Andrew Jackson by was "Indian Killer".
Oh stop with that shit!!
Jackson was one of the most vile people to ever live, and I shouldn't have to be Cayuga and Cherokee to recognize that. I'll stop with "that shit" when it's universally recognized as fact.
That thing sounds awesome
Nice strong clear mids
What an absolute gorgeous piece of wood. Love that guitar.
Sweet guitar. Love that wood grain.
That hickory fretboard is going to last forever. What a piece!
Heck, you could knock a baseball outta the park with it!
Hello darkness my old friend 🙂
Back in the late 90’s my local music store had a Old Hickory model. I didn’t like it because the wood looked yellowish green.
Audio problem
Unusual body colors, but somehow aesthetically pleasing. Unique tone as well, has some mojo. I like it.
This LP has a pretty bright and trebly-ish sound if you ask me. I would definitely tweak with the tone pots on this one.
Gotta say the song choice is spot on haha
I saw the Old Hickory on display at the Smithsonian. It was an amazing piece.
Good to know it is back on display - the website says it isn't currently on which I thought was a waste!
That really is an awesome guitar. If you’re down this way with the family, it’s worth stopping into the hermitage.
That’s definitely the nicest looking one that I’ve seen!
nice to hear your playing with much more conviction
To hear trogly play holiday in Cambodia is a crazy mindflip
Wish I could say I had heard of this model before tonight.
No audio
Love that so much, nice nod to the Dead Kennedys as well. Great episode.
Sick song choice! Easy Bay Ray, respect.
Oh shit I would never have taken you for a Dead Kennedy’s fan. Go Austin’s!
Very cool story! Awesome looking guitar!
Hickory is the preferred soundwood for Drum Shells and Drumsticks
Everyone's talkin about the DK but honestly this guitar has great tone and it sounds different than most other LPs for whatever reason - but yeah, it's a penetrating tone without being icepicky so punk rock and also thrash probably goes well on this axe.
Sweet. Love it ❤️😎👍💯✔️
That holiday song! best playing demo yet
I’ve visited Jackson’s place and I don’t remember seeing Gibson guitars. There was a harp and a parlor guitar and a piano.
Makes sense. They didn't exist until 50 years after he died.
Great show
He played a Dead Kennedy riff...On a presidential themed guitar.🙌🏻
Trogly's Punk Rock street cred just jumped up a few notches 😂
"Tulip Poplar" is relatively soft and very absorbent. It's in the magnolia family.
So thank you
That guitar tone at 18:00 is killer
My friend had Bill Clinton's Gibson guitar. It has the seal on it and is a blue color, really nice. He was going to go pick it up at Gibson and never made it. It is quite unique, I should have got a picture. When he has a event at his shop he brings it into display.
there's something so beautiful about a white fingerboard and black headstocks that makes me want a les paul in this configuration more than anything!
That bridge pickup sounds great with some dirt! Of course this isn't really a guitar meant for playing, but nice nonetheless
That is a very nice guitar. It is definitely one of the best looking natural finish guitars I have seen in a long time.
That action at the 12th? You could drive a truck under it. It would be good for slide. However stunning wood, reminds me of a sideboard my grandparents had some years ago. Also they make axe handles out of hickory which is fitting for a guitar 'Axe'.
That is the coolest guitar I've seen
I think these types of dings, don't really register with non-collecting players like me. I considered my guitar mint until I really looked at it under the collectors eye. Two very different types of people.
If I get into selling off guitars again I'll dread the influence on buyers looking under the hood for any flaw and black lighting them, (which only works on nitro finishes).
@@cataclysmicconverter And selling sucks for players like me. I get torn apart for silly details that collectors view as serious deductions! We're very different guitar people!
Great choice of song . Cool guitar
Sweet!
CME had one of these back in 2018. I passed on it not knowing how rare it was. They thought they would have trouble selling it because Old Hickory was cancelled.
Great story! Thanks for the video documentary!
Hope you paid the seller in $20 bills :)
Evening all!! Cool guitar, the fret board is interesting.
