As a knife maker myself I can assure the viewer that you are exactly right , establish that burr and then take it off. Great video

My wife and I worked for Western Cutlery in Colorado and she worked putting the edge on their knives and yes. You definitely have to get rid of the burr. Thanks for sharing.

Great instructional video!!! My knife sharpening game changed for the better once I started using a strop. A strop is such a great way to maintain an edge. By using a strop more frequently, I'm able to go for quite some time without having to go to the stones. Thanks for another great video, Scott!!!

Great information, thank you! Twenty minutes in and he hasn't had any coffee ... is he ok? 23:08 Whew, all is well. 😂😉 Seriously though, I feel it's always good to see others' technique. I sometimes get frustrated in my process thinking I'm doing all the things recomended and not getting an edge but I think I just need to be more patient. Thank again!

Nice vid! try using a bit less pressure on the strop though. Keep it up!

I like these diamond stones from harbor freight for garden tools. Also, for cleaning the surface of my 2x72 gator belts. Thanks for taking us along 👍.

Thank you, very informative, I guess you use a particular oil for your stones?

Cheers from Tijuana: I have the same stones as you do but one thing I was using that 4 side hone knife sharpener dry whit noting on it. Shame on me!I dint know that you cud use water on it! But looking at your video it seams your in my shop. Same stones, same mat, same apron.same ceramic stroke. Hope you're fine and cheers once again from Tijuana.

I use the bottom of a ceramic Coors dimple dish from workk and a natural ancient ocean jasper stone slurried with a diamond stone on one side and just a bit 'roughed up' on the other side to finalize the edge if necessary. A ceramic 'Crock Stick' can be used to touch up and pull the edge back up if needed.

🇺🇸🙋‍♀️🎄🎑 Thank you so much for the instruction!. Although I'm a little sad to not be able to put an Apple Seed edge on without the machinery. I saw a guy (video in the woods) use a smooth cut branch and put a layer of dirt and water mix on the edge for stropping. Good for in a pinch I think.

that diamond stone is not very good, there are better ones on the web like dmt or sharp all. for diamond your better off with a solid stone meaning the whole stone is covered with diamonds and no spaces like that one only has dots of diamond. but there's also others that do well that look like a honeycomb . and yes gotta get rid of the burr, but when sharpening scratch pattern is good to keep the same on both sides. start with pressure and lighten up on pressure with your strokes on the stone, anyway good video sir stay sharp .lol

Except for carving knives I never shoot for razor sharp. For working knives slightly rough sharp works fine and seems to last much longer.
Actually thats not quite true. My EDC pocket knife is a large stockman, and the spay blade I fine sharpen, just for when I need to cut leather or such.

INDEED!! and it depends on the particular steel. I have found that D2 likes the edge a bit 'toothy' and if the angle is a bit less severe than say....N690 or 14C28N.
The temper also matters as you can have 3 or 4 1095 blades and they are all different temper and need different sharpening strategy.
