The whole live from Folsom Prison album is a really good intro. Hurt is great, but it is a cover of a Korn song. And yes, he wrote this song to his first wife, I believe his first, it was his way of saying he would be true to her while he was on the road away from her. And yes, essentially he is "walking the line" by having to resist the many temptations of being one of the biggest music stars at this time and being on the road by himself.

On June 14, 1977, the Man in Black strode into the House Chamber as if it were the Grand Ole Opry. But music legend Johnny Cash wasn't about to belt out tunes for any ordinary concert. Rather, Cash delivered a moving poem to celebrate the bicentennial of the U.S. flag.
Cash, accompanied by wife, June Carter Cash, and their young son, took his place in front of the Speaker of House Tip O’Neill of Massachusetts, who was already seated at the rostrum. Nearby, the U.S. Army band stood waiting to perform and the All-City Chorus, a group of Boston public school students, shuffled nervously. The House had recessed but scores of Members and guests filled the seats.
Flag Day celebrations were for decades a treasured tradition in the House, which stood in recess during the commemoration, so that non-Members like singer Johnny Cash could appear in the chamber.
Representative Robin Beard of Tennessee nudged the festivities along by introducing Cash. “His deep feelings about his country and its history as symbolized by our flag, have been immortalized in his sensitive poem, ‘This Ragged Old Flag,’” Beard noted.

cash got that rhythmic snare drum-like sound to his guitar strumming by putting a playing card in between the strings and the neck of the guitar, so that it would vibrate slightly to make that noise; just like kids using a clothes pin to clip a playing card to their bicycle spokes to make that same sound, but at a higher speed/frequency on a bike, of course.

Walking the line was an old western term for walking along the railroad tracks and inspecting them for any sign of damage, later done by handcart. It became a reference for walking "in a straight line," minding your business, examining your behavior, and not doing anything you shouldn't. Other railroad slang - mainline, sideline, to get sidetracked, to make the grade, double-header, and to railroad (somebody.)

One of Johnny's best songs was called Sunday Morning Coming Down. It was written by Kris Kristofferson for Johnny Cash. It is about someone partying a little too much on Saturday Night and then Waking up Sunday Morning not doing so good. It is a great song and was another controversial song at the time because it had a line that said "I wish that I was Stoned." Back in the early 70's you did not sing that in Country, Folk or Gospel music that Johnny had fans in. He was a rebel in his days and didn't follow any rules like being the first performer to do a taped concert in a prison for the inmates. This happened at Folsom Prison and it is in a documentary format and a great behind the scenes and songs in the concert for the prisoners. You have to check it out it is worth the time! I love you guys and how you look at songs and videos.

  • @SilverbladeDagger

BTW, the term "toe the line" comes from British Parliament, where you have two sides of the chamber that oppose each other. There is a line on the floor to keep them at a respectful distance, and back in the day, to keep swords out of reach of the other side when things get heated. The head of parliament will tell people to "toe the line" if they get too heated. Walk The Line is sort of an extension of that. Also, Johnny Cash was into drugs and etc, tempted by all the women and etc that came with his fame, but he really loved June Carter Cash, and this song is more like vows to her, so that he would quit drugs, and be faithful to her, even though he was tempted a lot. He died a couple months after she did, and his last song was "Hurt", at least that was the last song made into a music video. But his love for June was epic and legendary. That is why they made the movie "Walk The Line" about his life and June's. She came from the founding family of country music, the Carter Family. So a lot of epic and legendary stuff there.

The song was written during his marriage to his first wife, Vivian. In fact, Vivian claimed to have written it, though there's no way to know if there is any truth to that.
Johnny created a lot of myths about himself, and so did June. Their love for each other was strong, but it wasn't an easy marriage. They were both addicted to drugs. Johnny could be the sweetest guy in the world and then suddenly turn mean. Terrific singer, though; one of my favorites of that genre.

The song Hurt is a good one to listen to, it's very deep when you know the backstory behind it. It was originally written and performed by Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, but even Trent has conceded publically that Johnny's cover has ensured Trent no longer owns the song. Johnny took it and made it a whole new beast of a song. Then the video clip is the last time Johnny and his wife June were in a video together.

Walk the line is means staying on the straight and narrow. Before June Carter came around he slept around, did drugs and he cleaned up because of June his wife.

"Walk the line" comes from prison culture that Johnny was very familiar with. Inmates had to walk on a line painted on the floor, if they deviated from the line, they were punished.

Just found you guys, and I'm really excited about it! You are SO cute together! Just subscribed. As to what it means to "walk the line..." years ago, it was used in more of a negative connotation. The "line" being the marker between right and wrong. So on YOUR side of the line, everything is good; but if you step OVER that line, then you've stepped into something you SHOULDN'T have. So in the case of this song, he's saying he knows he's tied to her (and obviously, it's a good thing), but he wants her to know that while he "walks the line," he won't cross over that line, into a situation with another woman. Staying on HIS side of the line means he's being faithful to her, but if he crosses OVER that line, he's cheated. (Or at the very least, flirting with the idea of cheating.) Funny how difficult it is to explain a concept that you've always known, but when you try to put it into words, it gets a bit garbled. LOL Sorry 'bout that. Anyway...you guys are great, and I love how you were both respectful to the music, even though it might not be your personal taste. Having said that, though...you definitely should listen to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue." Super, SUPER funny! God bless you.

The rhythm is like a train, a locomotive... representing him being on tour. And while he's on the road, he's staying on the path, on the straight and narrow, won't stray or drink or do drugs, because of his love for his wife, June.

Actually I Walk The Line was basically Johnny telling that he would be a nice guy for her and no longer fool around or get himself into danger situations, cause you know, Cash used to be a very intense person, with all sorts of problems with alcohol and pills and stuff, and June, her wife, was a very nice and put together girl. So yeah, It was a way of telling I love you and I'll behave.

It's a nice story, but this song was actually written when he was married to his first wife, Vivian. Johnny and June both continued to use drugs well into their marriage. It wasn't all neat and tidy as presented in the movie.

Even if a person doesn't care for Country Music, EVERYONE likes Johnny Cash! He is a genuine legend and one of the most prolific AMERICAN POETS to ever write the lines as well as walk them!
He enjoyed playing concerts for prisoners such as San Quentin. There is a Live Album of this concert, and a film.
Try ''RING OF FIRE" or "A Boy Named Sue".
Johnny Cash was a guest on THE SIMPSONS, appearing as a Wolf when Homer ingested Peyote Buttons (Mescaline) and began to hallucinate like Jim Morrison tripping in the desert.

Men will sometimes say things like, I’m a man and (ain’t) no woman gonna change my ways. Walking the line is when you change your behavior or make adjustments for your woman. Check out Johnny Cash's rendition of Sixteen Tons
