Grew up w/Castlevania so I love dark action platformers. KoD isn't one of the best but has superb art direction. The games designed well around all the forms for some great replayability. I love that they let you go through it all in human form- most devs would force you to pick one monster form to continue.
It might take 30 minutes or an hour to beat, but don't bother continuing if you get a game over. The loss of your health bar extensions makes continuing foolish.
Crazy, one of my buddies is making this game for me soon. I was going to have him make it this week but then I found out about Gunman's Proof and needed that one first! King of Demons is next. I would just import it but man, I have seen the price for that game jump pretty high, as of late. Great review and still one of my favorite channels!
the snes sure had gorgeous art. Such a leap from the 8 bit era. I remember when it launched, maio world was mesmerizing. Never felt such a jump from one gen to the next.
I've tried many times to find out who devleoped this game but I can't find out. It says KSS most places but they were a publishing house so was it really them? Did they start developing too? Did they outsource? Did they hire devs by contract? Some places say "Nihon Soft System" to whom there is no information whatsoever. The game kind of reminds me of Dragon Fighter NES however so maybe Natsume shadow-developed it?
I love this game! The controls are somewhat stiff but eventually you get used to them. Also, you can eat the fairy enemies to regain health, which imo is a nice touch.
Great review as always! I was wondering do you happen to have the manual for this game? There are no scans of it online, I'm a novice Japanese to English translator and want to translate the manual so that English fans can have a translated manual to go along with the translation patch.
THe game is great, completed it multiple times. There are different endings depending on what forms you using in the game. I think there are 3 endings: 1 - complete the game only using human, 2 - using any demon form and 3 - using final demon form (this is kind of dramatic and, beleive it or not is considered "good")
this was a weird game, definitely worth a try. you should review Parodius for super famicom...there are 2 , i always forget the good one. the one with kid dracula because he is pretty overpowered with his homing attack. such a fun twist on gradius keep up the good videos!
What about Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror. That has some weird imagery aswell. Psycho Dream is also really weird, but not as pretty. Hyper Iria and Ushio to Tora are also similiar, but more cartoonish due to their anime roots.
This is a goodie, and weirdly enough, I actually like playing as the regular guy more than the different transformations, the hit detection on his gun shots seem a bit more forgiving, but maybe I just haven't played it enough to get used to it. Anyway, great review as always. If you're scrounging for more SFC goodness to review, give Hyper Iria a try, it's really solid, also getting expensive for a real cart, but if folks just want a new game to try out on emulator or what-have-you, yeah, it's good, make it go. I also won't judge you if you need to check out gamefaqs or something to help navigate some of the non-linear level design.
I really apologize for being obnoxious but it's pronounced "Mah jew oh", the romanization is "Jyuu" but it's just pronounced as straight "Juu" in Japanese. Three "syllables" here.
Get Sweet Home on NES. Also Clock Tower on SNES, Innsmouse, Mushya: A Classic Tale of Japanese Horror on SNES, Super Castlevania, and a BUNCH MORE. Even Contra III: Alien Wars has some pretty damn dark imagery...
Does anyone have any recommendations for other hellish looking video games? It reminds me of Akira Wicked City and other dark anime from around this timeb
hahah oh man I literally just did a video on this too. well done snes drunk well done. I say buy a repro cart of it if you don't want to emulate. much cheaper then the import version
I know this is from like 4 years ago so maybe you've had more practice since then, but when you see two 'U's in a row in Japanese it just about always indicates one slightly elongated U, rather than two that need to be pronounced separately. So 'Ma-Joo-Oh' rather than 'Ma-Joo-Oo-Oh.'
Have you played Blackthorne/Blackhawk? It's pretty similar to this, relatively small sprites and detailed animation. Goes for a badass Terminator-2-ish vibe mixed together with Conan the Barbarian, pretty interesting.
maybe Koji Igarashi was influenced by majuu ou that he decided to reboot the whole akumajo dracula x/castlevania story into rondo of blood and symphony of the night kind of castlevania
+Son of Tiamat Hey man, old school SF2 in the arcade, you can't tell me he's not saying "Ha-dooooooooo-ken!" all ridiculous, it's got charm, and it's what a lot of people were wired to hear/say when describing it.
KesorodaBlk: Still not as bad as all the occurances of the word "Dick" that Stage 1 of Final Fight is littered with in all versions (including on the SNES!), at least in my book, lmfao!

Which ones, besides the Castlevanias, would you say are the best ones?
I've been binge watching your videos all day, and I have to say that your content is fantastic. Great job. I will be sticking around.
Thank you for watching
I really like your content SNES Drunk! Hope you keep it up.. Can't wait to try this game btw, thanks xD
+Chris M. Thanks Chris
@@SNESdrunk Which parent of Spyro do you suspect have a half-sibling?
He kept it up
thanks for the indication man, spend some quality time in hell is exactly what i need right now
This game desperately needed a password system. It's absurd that you have to play it all in one go, even with unlimited continues.
X100 this
+Ghost81 The old living the console on all night to play it again next day when back from school thing XP
It’s not absurd, it’s Japanese hard. In other words, grow a set lol
@@peanutmansemporiumofrandom7472 You sound like you enjoy Japanese... "hard"😂😂

What do u mean your is “making” these games for you? Like does he make reproduction carts or something?
@@MerkhVision This comment was from seven years ago haha... but yes, he made me a copy in a red cart. I still have it.
This reminds me of a lot of the old school anime I grew up on, I may need to find this!
Glad this game is getting a re-release in ENGLISH. Definitely picking this up at a fair price. Scalpers can keep the originals. 😂
never have I ever heard of this, thanks mang

SNES to N64 was a similar milestone for its time.
@@Smilley85 playing Mario64 for the first time was intense.

The game is developed by Diablo himself 😂
I ordered the reproduction today. Looking forward to playing this.

do u have anymore super famicom recommendations???..this game rocks...plz do more super famicom recommendations...
Sega has some games that look and play like this. Alien Solider has some really crazy enemies.

+Ryuma King I did two levels of playthrough for Psycho Dream... awesome game. Musya is was too funky, control-wise for me.
*WOW! Great game and review sir! The closest is Contra 3 or Hagane I guess?!* ⭐️
My Retro-Bit edition cartridge just showed up today.
These graphics look awesome.
There's a reissue of this game coming out later this month.
This game is a fucking gem, the music is very cool

I was wondering about this game. Fan made translated Repro carts have it as the King of Demons. Thanks, im going to get this in the near future!
Loving your videos! btw holy shit this game is expensive :O
That looks like a fun side scroller.😀
I'd love to play this game but the prices for it are outrageous.
im goin to try this when i get home...
Great game❤❤❤
looks like a great game, sure i will try a emulator later, thanks for showing man! but how do you find this games?
+Thiago Mascherpe Spinetti Places like reddit and Racketboy
This game have lot inspiration from Go-Nagai's Devilman, except this didn't have much forms compared to main character from this game
Its majyuu ou, you dont pronounce the second u as its meant fpr the long pronunciation of jyuu
So ma jyuu oo
its a mash of splatterhouse, demon's crest and castlevania
Holy crap I never knew this game existed, I know what game I'm playing next :)
Does anyone know of any more dark imagery snes games? Something along these lines or something like splatterhouse

awesome....! A good thing to have on a hacked console with an emulator.
You can find English reproduction ROMs for a lot cheaper than that. TheCartridgeArcade on etsy sells them for forty bucks!
Is it based on some anime/manga of some sort
Sexy women merged with monsters seems common in Japanese games. 0:38
or folklore in general- The mermaid and succubus from western folklore, for example.
You did.
😎👍🍻

haduken? HADOKEN!!!!!
How "hard" is this game?
Why do some people pronounce it "Ha-doo-ken"? Even Ryu doesn't say it like that.
