I'm picking up my 2024 13' standard Scamp in two weeks, but I'm glad to have discovered this video! It reassured me about some of my choices not to install certain options. I appreciate your clarity and that you provided pros and cons. Thanks!
I'm so glad it was helpful to ya! It is easy to get analysis paralysis when there are SO many choices. I hope you love your new Scamp! Congrats 🎉 If you are looking to stock up on the essentials I have a whole article about it that you might find helpful as well: scamperlife.com/2023/09/23/scamp-essentials-simplified/
My 16 footer had a furnace in it when I bought it. On the way home with it we spent the night at a remote campground it was cold so needed to use the furnace. We woke up in the middle of the night freezing our butts off. The furnace used so much electricity it wore down our battery and quit working. If you have an external power source it's fine. But if you boon dock it'll draw down your battery in one night or less. And, I suspect although I'm not sure, that if you leave your Scamp connected to your vehicle, it's also draw down your car battery. Scamps are great in many ways. I've had mine since 2007 and have had zero issues with it. However, they are not particularly good 4-season campers. Which is why I have disconnected my Suburban factory installed heater and instead use a Dickinson Newport propane heater that I installed myself as the principle heat source. And as a backup use a Buddy Heater. The Dickinson uses very little electricity and little propane. It's very efficient. The Buddy Heater throws a lot of heat but a downside is it emits water vapor as a part of it's combustion process, So I run it only to heat up my Scamp quickly. A Secondary benefit of the Dickinson it that it has a glass door that allows the flames to be seen. It looks like a miniature fireplace and adds a bit of warm ambiance.
You are not the 1st person to tell me about an experience like that. The group 27 battery upgrade helps a ton in making it through the night with the heat on. But 2 things that make the most for us: - Line the floor windows and vents with reflectix. The insulation really traps in heat and helps the heater to run less often to keep the space warm. We use gym floor mat foam over the reflectix on the floor for added insulation and a comfortable floor to walk on. - We also carry warm bedding even in the summer so we can set the heat lower and let it run more intermittently instead of staying on all night.
I am in the process of researching travel trailer options and the Scamp is one of my top 5 I'm considering. This video has been incredibly helpful and has definitely moved the Scamp higher on my list.
Your videos are so educational. Thank you so much. This one particularly showed me why purchasing either a new Scamp or late model with most upgrades/options is what I would want to do instead of thinking I’m saving money by purchasing an older model.
Thank you! Your insights have been invaluable. I love your demeanor and no-nonsense disposition when explaining the details. If you're still offering, I would love the trailer cover.
I'm really happy you have found them helpful! You're in the running for the cover. I'll draw a name from a hat in a few weeks and let the lucky winner know. Good luck! Thanks for commenting 🙂
@BackcountryDirtbag Thank you! We pick up our new Scamp in May. My wife and I (both recently retired MD school teachers) and our precious Dachshund, Matilda Louise, are looking forward to many "Scamping" adventures.
Most informational video in a scamp I’ve seen and you made the content super digestible! A lot of the time I am super confused with reviews but as a first time scamper you made it seem easy. Thanks!
Thank you and you're welcome. I'm really glad I was able to help you understand things a little better. I try to do the same in all my videos so if you haven't already, check out the info I put together on the plumbing and electrical systems. They will help you avoid common mistakes that can be frustrating and costly. Happy Scamping to ya!
Just subscribed, and thanks for this video. We have a refurbished 13 foot 1977 Trillium with a similar setup, and we do mostly dry camping. The shop that did the work for us provided quite a few options. Ones we paid for that we wouldn't do again: outdoor shower, propane water heater. Options that we love: propane furnace, single propane tank, front dinette instead of bunks or toilet, larger than standard front and rear windows, glass covered stove, solar system with roof-mounted solar panel, 12 volt fridge/freezer. We chose a trailer cover, and then didn't use it for a few years. This winter we finally opened the package and put it on, and we're loving it.
Great review. The discussion about the outdoor shower was surprisingly very informative...onboard water, energy to heat, etc. all dissuade use of the outdoor shower. This is something I am considering as I compare the Scamp to other fiberglass trailers.
Thank You!! I enjoy your down to earth common sense approach. I am a new Scamper (2nd hand 2021 w/o bathroom) & your video about what to have when you pick up your Scamp was my fav pre-Scamp video!! I really enjoy this type of vid & this info!! From 1 Scamper to another THANKS!!
Oh my goodness thank you so much! It makes me really happy to know you are enjoying these and have found them helpful. Wishing you tons of epic adventures in your lil capsule. Have fun out there!
Great job, especially on the pros, cons, and whys. Gives users some food for thought in considering options. The most important advice is to think it through and do what works for each person or family in their own situations. Your hacks rock, too!
Couldn't agree more. Everyone has their own priorities and situations. I can't speak for everyone but hopefully the things I've learned help clarify a few questions at least. Thank you for watching and commenting. Thanks for the kind words 🙂
The nice thing about the built in awning is that you don’t have to lug around a heavy, awkward, space using mobile awning. Some folks don’t need overhead shade, but living in the sunny southwest, we have to have it You will appreciate the second propane tank the moment your first tank empties out while you are camping. You can put just a few gallons of propane in your second tank as a reserve, that should help reduce your tongue weight without the risk of having zero propane. The digital entry lock WILL FAIL so have your key handy. The built in brake controller is new to me, sounds intriguing. I like your exterior 30 amp plug, our cord is hard wired and occasionally catches on the inside when pulled out. Big yes to USB fans, they add so much value for comfort. Our Casita has the bathroom, I kind of agree, I’m not so sure I would get it again either. I think I’d get a Tralino toilet and be good with that.
Yeah I know it's an unpopular opinion but I prefer the easy up over the awning. I had an awning ripped off my rig by a sudden gust of wind once. It did a ton of damage to the fiberglass and was very costly. So now I find myself wanting to pull the awning in every time I walk the dog. An easy up staked down next to the scamp is much less likely to damage the trailer if the wind surprises me again. Thanks for the heads up on the digital lock. I always have my keys on me. It's nice that my wife can get in when I'm off at the bathroom or digging stuff out of the truck. We like the added flexibility. I'd fully do a cassette toilet too if I could go back in time but I still love my Scamp and enjoy the heck out of it. Have fun out there my friend!
Excellent information (as always) - thank you for taking the time to record these videos. I have had my Scamp for a couple of months now, and I still love her. Her name is “Orcasita” because she lives on Orcas Island and is. . .well. . .a tiny house. Keep up the good work - I appreciate you!
Thanks Marlene! I really appreciate your kind words. A tiny home on Orcas Island sounds SO heavenly! That set up is #goals for sure. Do you have her covered? I know that area gets a ton of rain. A lil roof over the Orcasita and a deck out front would be such a fun project. 🔨
I have a 2021 13’ and agree with everything you talked about. I wish I had the electric jack and door handle but they weren’t offered at that time. I live in AZ and use the cover often. It’s lasted (as they said) 3 years and is now slowly falling apart due to the sun I’m sure. I use my awning often and am glad I have it in our hot temperatures. Thanks for your comment on the pop up’s though. 👍 I could use the new cover as mine is getting r torn and weathered. Keep up the good work. Great videos 👏
Thanks so much! I'll put your name in the running for the cover. I am going to pull a name from a hat in a few weeks and let the lucky person know. Gook luck!
Thanks for your great observations. Got my 2018 last fall, need to figure out things, I’d really put that cover to use living in Oregon, thanks for the offer.
I'll put your name in the hat and draw a winner in a few weeks. I'll let the lucky one know and get in touch about shipping. Good luck to you and thanks for commenting!
I’m redoing a 1992 13’ foot layout with NO BATHROOM… I agree with your wife, a bathroom is nice. But we use the front bunk exactly as you would. The bed just isn’t big enough. If you still have the cover, I’d love to take it off your hands! We are forced to store ours outdoors in our lovely Indiana weather ❄️⛈️☀️💨 BTW, I just discovered your channel. VERY helpful! Cheers
I'll put your name in the hat! I'm doing the drawing this week. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Refurbishing an older Scamp sounds SO fun! Are you documenting it online anywhere?
I'm still paranoid about out of propane. But if I was not, I would just take one tank out if I was concerned about tongue weight. Yeah, manual awnings are a pain. Grab handle. Hard yes! Take it from an old person with arthritis. Absolutely yes! Outdoor shower and dogs. Depends on the dog. We strted camping with a spaniel mix. That dog was a long haired mud magnet. An outdoor shower was great. We ended with a poodle mix. Never needed anything but a hand towel to wipe his feet. Back up camera. I like mine. It really helps. Brakes and lights. Yes! Safety is best.
Yeah our Golden doodle is pretty wipe-offable 😁 If I take a tank off I need to remove and replace the mounting bracket so I could center the remaining tank instead of having it off to one side messing up the weight balance. Considering revamping the tongue with a storage box and upgraded battery system... stay tuned 🤞
We bought one used. The one thing I really wish I had is the propane heater. We're are also often off grid. We tend to only camp with hookups in the winter because we don't have this heater. We don't have a bathroom and have never missed it. Never having to dump/clean a black water tank is a definite yes for us.
Awesome videos! I've really enjoyed watching your scamp videos. Your style is very enjoyable to watch...it is informative but casual. It is like hanging out and drinking a beer with one of your buds while talking about campers! I am a little way out from buying one but will likely be doing a lot of solo travel and you have provided a ton of great input. Good luck with your channel. Take it easy!
This might be the nicest comment anyone has ever left. I really appreciate your kind words and that you took the time to leave such lovely feedback. Good luck to you as well! I hope you find the most perfect little trailer for all your adventures. May all your paths be clear out there 🍻
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and ideas. I’m going to retire in two years and I want to order my Scamp now! I need to determine what I really need!
Great video! I travel solo with an occasional dog or 2. Husband not interested in camping. I love my bathroom and wouldn't go without that in my 13'. I agree with all your other preferences. Recently did a long trip and bought the hitch wheel to get me out of a tight situation. Didn't need it but I won't travel without it because I once spent the good part of an hour turning around at a closed gate! I am almost always off grid so my AC has only been used once. Furnace is definitely my friend. I camp in the desert southwest often and it gets very cold even on spring and fall nights. I may buy an additional 16' layout 6 at some point. I enjoy leaving my bed made up but miss a place to sit for eating and laptop conveniences. The stove and sink top options you have are on my wish list! I use a cutting board over my sink now that must be stored while on the road. I've never used more than one burner on the stove so having a cover that is flush with counter top is a big win for better use of that space.
My wife feels the same way about the bathroom. When I use the trailer solo I love having it. But when 2 of us are in there together we have to dance around each other and do things one at a time while the other waits their turn. It would be nice to have a couch to sit on out of the way from our clothing storage while one of us is changing or cooking. Oh my goodness though, getting stuck at a closed gate is my nightmare! I'm impressed it took you less than an hour to maneuver out. We have talked about getting a 16' as well. That would require a bigger tow vehicle for us though. We really do love our 13' and have almost no complaints. I just wanted to point out the pros and cons for people bc I would have found that super helpful when I was shopping for our Scamp.
Have you looked at the Casita fiberglass campers? they have very similar layouts to the Scamps and are very similar in price too. We have a Casita Spirit Deluxe model with full bed, side dinette that becomes single bed, and bathroom. You can choose a 16 or 17 ft model.
@@LandseerNorth you are so welcome. Glad you found me. I hope the content here will help paint a much clearer picture for you about these adorable lil trailers.
I bought a 2018 5 years ago. Same scenario as yours, customer never picked it up. It was a layout 1-no bathroom but a bunk. It was discounted because of this. I’m pleased with it but wish I had the wheel on the tow bar! Great video.🤙
Great video, you earned another subscriber. We have a Casita so very similar FGRV and I have to agree on most of these items, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze on some of them. I too am surprised at how little propane they use, I figured it would burn more with the furnace, stove, water heater and fridge (both when in gas mode) all using propane but they sip it and the dual tanks is pretty overkill. It blows my mind when I see some trailers with the twin 30# tanks but different strokes.... We love the outdoor shower and we've found that we use it more as an outdoor sink with the use of a QD flexible neck faucet hookup than we do with the coiled hose and garden sprayer it came with. I have used it with the outdoor shower tent a time or too after dirt bike trips but it's rare as I make good use of onsite shower facilities to avoid having to dirty up mine haha. The toilet in our camper is for number one only or number two only in extreme circumstances when there's no other option. Regardless of manufacturer, fiber glass is the way to go when it comes to these smaller trailers. We've been customizing ours all year and so far it has been fantastic. We have some big trips coming up this fall and we are looking forward to using it on those travels.
Haha "the juice isn't worth the squeeze" that's a new expression for me. I love that. I will say I have started to use our outdoor shower as a dish washing station and I may have spoken to soon on that one. I had not thought about tweaking it tho. Thanks for that inspo. Isn't it so fun to dial in these lil trailers to our own specific needs? I never stop thinking about more things I can do with mine. I hope your upcoming trips all go smoothly and you make amazing memories out there. TY for the comment and great suggestions.
Kickass review. It was very genuine and I liked that you gave the input from your wife's perspective as well. I like the bathroom, but like the bunk possibility more. I like the 16' model that has both the bunk and bathroom. I wish the 13' models could figure out a good floor plan for that option.
That would be the best of both worlds if they could! I do love the small size and low weight of the 13... But sometimes the extra space and options of the 16 are tempting.
Thanks for the video. I really like the clever layout of the Scamp but I had no idea they were in the twenty thousand dollar price range. Diffinately an upgrade from tent camping, minus the headache of driving and parking an RV but for me there's too many other options for half the price, some even include a motor🤠
They definitely aren't for everyone and you can save a ton of money by not getting all the optional features. I've had drivables before and I really prefer this trailer. I've come across people still using their Scamps built in the 70s! Not May motors you can say the same for 😉
Thank you for that very informative video about your scamp. How much does the 13 foot trailer way with very minimal options I have a vehicle that does not tow very much and I want to make sure that I have a little extra wiggle room for belongings and being comfortable. Thank you again look forward to more videos.
You are very welcome. Thanks for the encouragement and taking the time to comment. I can't say what that weight would be since there are too many factors and materials that have changed over the years. If you want to have a new one built to your own specifications the people over at Scamp are wonderful and would be able to help you with that information. What I can tell you is that experts suggest that the weight of the fully loaded trailer be no more than 85% of the tow capacity to allow a reasonable payload in the tow vehicle. Hope that helps!
I do think the furnace is totally worth it. We use it often and without hookups it is the most energy efficient/safest option. I think that with the shower, toilet, sink and outdoor shower that the electric pump makes the most sense for us.
@dancleary7724 sorry I just noticed you asked about the water heater, I read it as heater initially. I really like having the water heater. The option for a warm shower when desired is a total luxury and getting greasy camp dishes really clean is lovely too. However, both of those can be accomplished in other ways. When we camp without hookups we don't use the water heater so it's really just when we spoil ourselves with a full hookup site.
(Previous comment didn’t post. My error I’m sure.) I have a 2021 13’ with a bath, brakes and controller and several other items you mentioned. I agree with most of your takes on what is worth it and what is not. Several of the options you and I paid extra for are now standard on the 13’. Brakes, 27 battery, plug in electric, glass top stove - for example. One odd change is that it appears you can only get the larger bed in the deluxe. I didn’t want the extra weight of the wood, but the larger bed was a must. Glad I don’t have to make that decision now. I’ll subscribe and see what else you suggest for Scamp.
Ooof I'm glad I didn't have to make that choice either. I would have loved a 3 way fridge option instead of all electric. Seriously considering swapping it out. Thanks for the sub and the comment! I hope you enjoy the channel.
The 3-way fridge is great. That fridge was standard in mine. Other than the AC (that I also don’t use much), everything on mine will run on battery or propane. It seems many trailers are moving to all electric assuming people will always have power. I think that’s too bad.
That's how all my previous rigs were set up too. It was way easier to stay off grid longer that way. I'm not a big fan of the change over to all electric either. It's tough to have enough solar mounted on such a small trailer and suitcase solar isn't my favorite option. But there's always a way to make it work.
Very nice and honest review! I've read in other post's that the fan of the heater draws the battery down while boon docking. What's you opinion? I feel that one of the benefits of a fiberglass camper is that it withstands the conditions and should not require the cover. Thanks for your ideas and opinions!
Thanks so much. I would agree that the heater can drain the battery. You are more likely to get through the night with the group 27 battery upgrade than without it. We tend to keep it set at 60 so it'll cycle on and off instead of running constantly. OR when it's really cold we shut off the fridge at night to reserve more battery power for the heat, but we have an electric only fridge in our 2023. Both are big reasons for installing a permanently mounted solar system. We can use the heat all night while running the fridge and recharge the battery back up during the day.
I live in Texas that campers cover is for your windows and solar panels when hail is in the forcast! Trust me you want to keep it. Put it on after a burglar smashes you're car windows thats what mine is for, also with my car I don't want hail damage.
I really love mine. They do have their quirks and the cushions that make up the bed are notoriously hard/uncomfortable. But it's not hard to get things dialed in. I'll be keeping mine for years and years.
Thanks so much 😊 Our fridge is not a 3 way fridge. The 2023 option was only all electric. I do have an RV 101 video shot in my previous RV that talks about it a bit though. Just go back in time on my channel a tad to find it. And I'll put your name in the hat for the drawing! Good luck!
Hmmm that's interesting 🤔 I wonder why? I can't imagine it's due to location since it is right next to the water tank in the Scamps. I hope there is a good reason for it like labor costs cuz they pay their workers super well or something.
Re outdoor shower, try heating water on a campfire & filling a "solar shower" bag so you can use the nozzle that comes woth that + gravity drain to = off-grid warm shower (indoor or out).
@@BackcountryDirtbagActually I saw engineer come up with great option He purchased 2 gal garden manual pump spray bottle with hose and long handle and modified it. He cut the handle short and pours warmed up water in container, then uses it as shower with handle. He even made inside small shower pan. We so far bought 1 gallon one at Lowes with sprayed top super cheap to rinse our feet, dog and shoes. We have indoor shower in longer trailer but prefer manual sprayer during warmer weather.
Hello, thanks for the great video, it was very helpful! Can you please explain how the 7 way plug works on the standard version? Is the cord detachable from the trailer? If that were the case you could just unplug from the car and trailer and put it away. Also, what getting the lithium battery upgrade? Thanks!
Hi, you are so very welcome. I'm glad you found some value in it. The 7 way plug is hardwired to the trailer no matter which version you get. The portion demonstrated in this video is what plugs into the tow vehicle. The option I discussed was just a spot to store/protect the 7 way when the trailer is not connected to a tow vehicle. There isn't a way to detch it from my trailer. I can't speak to a lithium battery upgrade. That's something I may do in the future but I haven't yet.
Hello. I might be interested in the cover. I'm in California. I took notes and will comment later on Facebook Scamp Owners. My 2024 13' L2 was delivered yesterday (Feb 11, 2024) and there are some differences and inclusions on the 2024.
Congrats on your new Scamp! How exciting! Where are you going to take it 1st? I'll put your name into the hat for the cover drawing and let the winner know in a few weeks. Good luck!
@@johnmackey3937 the 54" bed is only 4.5 feet wide. You would need to build an extension piece if you wanted to face that direction, but I have seen that done. It gives 2 people more room to spread out with just their feet close together on the extension.
Love the review. I’m guessing that since the power jack and plug protector aren’t products you have listed on amazon where I can purchase them but only what the mfg supplies? I’m also guessing the power jack needs to have a specific type of trailer in order to work correctly. Lots of great info. I have the bathroom and am trying to think of ways to take everything out but cover the toilet and incorporate a couch. I wonder if anyone has ever done that type of renovation. Thanks!
Yeah everything discussed are factory installed options. Everything linked are just extra things seen in the video that I tend to get asked about a lot. You can find the 7 way protector mount on Amazon here: amzn.to/3SUBiCY It should be pretty easy to install. The electric jack on the other hand... I can't provide too much guidance on that one. I'm no expert on those. But if you contact Scamp directly they can tell you all about them and if it's possible to add one to your trailer after the fact. That's an interesting idea about converting the bathroom but leaving the toilet. I would love to know if you pull that off. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey we are picking up a sample lite 13ft in three weeks we got the back up camera does it run off the trailer battery 12 volts? Again love you videos actually lots of common sense
Thanks so much. I can't speak on the Scamp Lites but in my 13 the camera is wired into the trailer's 12v battery system and the monitor has to be plugged into the tow vehicle's 12v outlet to get power. Hope this helps. Enjoy your new trailer and I hope you have many amazing adventures with it!
@@BackcountryDirtbagyes that’s exactly the info I needed I will have to set up a solar like you I don’t think I will be able to charge towing cause I’m using a 2016 outback the scamp lite is basically like the 23 just no tanks or sink or frig
@@tfptalowahfishingpaddlinga3742 rad I bet you'll be able to off grid for as long as you want with a set up like that! You could prob fit 200 watts on the roof without the AC in the way. With that much solar and nothing to run but lights and a fan you'd probably never need to plug in. What a luxury that would be!
Yeah I know a lot of folks use it that way. I just prefer to heat water on my Coleman stove and wash in basins on the camp table since we usually boondock. But there is no wrong way to do it! Hope you have some amazing adventures out there.
Thanks for the rec! I lucked into a great deal on a Gofort when they were crowd funding and it's been flawless for 4 years now. So when that one finally dies I'll look at the Power Queen. Thanks.
The 2023 and newer Scamp 13s have electricity only fridges in them. The factory employee mentioned that the manufacturer stopped making 3-way refrigerators in that size. I do wish it was a 3-way. The fridge is my biggest battery draining vampire by far. It is the main reason I installed the solar panel a few videos prior. With the solar the battery can keep up with the fridge drain. Without it the battery only runs the fridge for 2-3 days max. Thanks for the great questions!
I really loved this video, and all the others you have done as well. You are easy to follow and full of great information!! Thank you! I would love to buy one of these, but need to know if my '24 Subaru Forester could tow it. I only have 150 lb of tongue weight and a tow weight of 1500 lbs. Since you mention the tongue weight in this video: Do you know what the tongue weight of your Scamp is? Also, dry weight of the camper?
Thank you for such kind words Lyn, they mean a lot to me. I would have to refer you to the Scamp website when it comes to official weights of things. There are too many variations and options for me to be able to answer that correctly. But when you call the manufacturer they are extremely helpful so that's a great place to start.
The prices for everything are written on the screen throughout the video. But if you are asking about the total cost of the trailer, my 2023 13' layout 2 was $25,028 total with all the options seen/discussed.
nice review. i'm in the process of researching the Scamp 13' so your input was very helpful, thank-you. i'm looking at get the one with the couch (layout 1?) and putting a porta-potti under the couch and take it out at night. i'm also planning on using it off grid so no A/C for me but i think i'm going with the outdoor shower. everything else you mentioned i agree with you, so that's how i'll do my build. do you have any videos on the off grid camping that you do?
Hey thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind feedback. A cassette toilet is a fantastic idea. That's what I would do if I didn't have the bathroom. I'm currently working on my off grid camping video. Still collecting the footage for that one but it'll be out before too long. Consider subscribing so you don't miss it once it's posted. But you can see a lot of the photos and an article about the equipment I use on my website: www.scamperlife.com Happy Scamping to ya! Hope you get exactly what you want!
You have sold me on this model! Have been looking since I sold my 19 foot heavy RV. Want as a backup in case I must evacuate again from Paradise California. Is the 13 foot big enough for one adult and 2 large dogs?? Larger bed a must!! Thank you for your video🦮🐕
Oh my gosh I'm so sorry you had to evacuate! I grew up in California and know how scary that can be. The 13 is smaller than it looks on camera. We fit 2 adults and a large dog in there but there isn't any room to spare. Some days we dream of the 16 ft version but having something so easy to store and so lightweight is a good trade off for the lack of space. I would suggest looking at a 13 and a 16 in person before you buy to see which size feels right for you.
So,I agree with your wife re a wet-bath inside, yet .... a kit is enough for me. When seitting up, open up your rectangular shallow Tupperware (or inflatable/folding dog bath), assemble your folding toilet w/bio-bags, hang shower curtain to enclose toilet & shower-water collection container (whether beside each other or toilet inside water collector between showers), , and suspend your gravity-feed "solar shower" bag with nozzle (use cook stove to heat water to desired temp for showering or washing dishes for filling solar shower).
@@BackcountryDirtbag I found they are similar asking price to new ones. I recall being on a list for ones cancelled, and with combined item discounts they were exactly the same price as a 1-3 yr old, one. Still kinda pricy, but better.
Have you looked recently? There isn't a wait at the factory anymore. I think it's bringing the price of used ones down now that the supply is keeping up with demand.
It can feel like that for sure. Yet when I factor in that there are still Scamps on the road and in use out there that were built in the mid 70s, I think the investment is worth it. The price spread out over 50 years of amazing memories seems more than worth it to me. Plus they retain their value so well you could use it for a few years and get the majority of your money back when you sell it. Few other RVs can do that.
We just bought a new 13' Scamp and am loving all the info! Thanks!! We got the brakes but not the expensive control Scamp offers. Could you expand a little (brand, model) on the key fob controlled wireless electronic brake controller. I am not finding it among all the online options. Is it the Curt Echo? That one seems dependent on mobile phone coverage. Again so appreciate your work, it is a confidence boost to get out there with some knowledge!
@guillermocuellarpottery4079 that's awesome! Congrats on your new rig! I hope you have SO much fun with it. The brand mine came with is by Autowbrake. There is a great video on how they work here: getautowbrake.com/products/autowbrake-trailer-mounted-electric-brake-control?srsltid=AfmBOorG1XVIe4AurRwO9FTgj3DiO5yVDizinssAyqx5wmAvJ9AB4jkk Hope this helps!
We got a brake controller installed in our tow vehicle. Why would you want the control for the brakes attached to your keys? Very bad idea for a number of reasons.
@@BackcountryDirtbag Just my opinion, but I would think that when the control is installed in your vehicle there is no chance of loss, breakage, falling into water, etc. If you think about it, the only time you need it is when you are in your vehicle. Just my two cents worth.
@tennesseeterri I hear what you're saying. But vehicle theft is very common where I live so it's actually more likely it would go missing if left inside the vehicle permanently. I'm a very methodical person and have never lost a set of keys in my life. It is the safest option for my situation.
Sir, I know you probably think this comment is a harmless complement but it is not. It fetishizes us. Comments like these are the very reason my wife does not want to participate in videos. When we are fetishized, there’s an extreme loss of respect. There’s a taking-away, stripping of that respect and it’s so gut-wrenching because it feels like a loss of humanity. You are turning us into objects. It feels horrible to be reduced to pieces and parts. My UA-cam channel is not the correct place for that energy.
You did waste your money on your wheel locked it’s useless. Thieves will remove your lug nuts remove your wheel and tire toss it to the side replace it with there’s and drive off!
I can see why you'd think that from this video alone. But in my 1st Scamp video I discuss how I have 2 Chock and Locks that are part of a multi-teared security system that involves those locks on both wheels, locking lug nuts on both tires and the spare to make tire removal way more trouble, a coupler lock and a proven industries hitch lock that even secures the safety chains within it. I'm not going to claim that it makes it impossible to take the trailer for a very determined thief but it definitely makes it less appealing than the trailer down the street with only a subpar coupler lock to protect it. The time it would take to tackle so many security systems gives me more than enough time to load and aim my most powerful deterrent. I think the fact that my trailer hasn't been messed with in Portland is a pretty good testimonial that it's working well.
@@pammied52 If a trailer isn't secured anyone with a tow ball can connect up to it and drive away. There are very high theft rates of vehicles and trailers where I live so I try not to make myself an easy target. The pop up canopy I mentioned is discussed with pictures in an article I wrote about all my favorite camping gear. They are a bit bulky so they don't work for everyone but we absolutely love ours and never camp without it. Here's the article: scamperlife.com/2024/01/07/camping-gear-that-elevates-the-experience/
@@pammied52 The area I live/store it has high theft rates but I also lock it up at parks/campgrounds any time I leave it unattended. I use my proven industries lock at the very least. amzn.to/3rguFQq
This is one of the best Scamp overviews I've seen. Thank you for taking the time to put it together.
This is so encouraging! Thank you so much. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment 💖
Congrats 🎉
If you are looking to stock up on the essentials I have a whole article about it that you might find helpful as well:

But 2 things that make the most for us:
- Line the floor windows and vents with reflectix.
That's wonderful. I'm glad this video was helpful to you. Good luck in your search and may you have many many amazing adventures.
Would love to hear the 5 brands you’re checking out!
what other campers are you checking out?
Your videos are so educational. Thank you so much. This one particularly showed me why purchasing either a new Scamp or late model with most upgrades/options is what I would want to do instead of thinking I’m saving money by purchasing an older model.
@@lvana1 I'm so glad this video helped clarify some things for you. Thanks for taking the time to let me know 🙂

@BackcountryDirtbag Thank you! We pick up our new Scamp in May. My wife and I (both recently retired MD school teachers) and our precious Dachshund, Matilda Louise, are looking forward to many "Scamping" adventures.

Good topic and you are interesting and informative. Much appreciated!
I'm flattered. Thank you so much 😊
Most informational video in a scamp I’ve seen and you made the content super digestible!
You're welcome and thanks for the sub. Sounds like you all have a killer set up! Do you document your adventures anywhere that I can follow along?
Great review. The discussion about the outdoor shower was surprisingly very informative...onboard water, energy to heat, etc. all dissuade use of the outdoor shower. This is something I am considering as I compare the Scamp to other fiberglass trailers.
Thanks! I'm glad it's helpful to you in your search. I appreciate the encouraging comment. I hope you find your perfect escape pod.
Some folks don’t need overhead shade, but living in the sunny southwest, we have to have it
You will appreciate the second propane tank the moment your first tank empties out while you are camping.
She’s not covered yet, but will be. I hadn’t thought of a deck, but that’s a great idea. Both would be fun projects!
Can't wait to see what you come up with!
I could use the new cover as mine is getting r torn and weathered.
We are forced to store ours outdoors in our lovely Indiana weather ❄️⛈️☀️💨
BTW, I just discovered your channel.
Yeah our Golden doodle is pretty wipe-offable 😁
If I take a tank off I need to remove and replace the mounting bracket so I could center the remaining tank instead of having it off to one side messing up the weight balance.
Considering revamping the tongue with a storage box and upgraded battery system... stay tuned 🤞
nice , learned a lot about things to consider when I buy a trailer.

Thank you Dan. I appreciate you watching and leaving such a kind comment 🙂
We bought one used. The one thing I really wish I had is the propane heater. We're are also often off grid. We tend to only camp with hookups in the winter because we don't have this heater. We don't have a bathroom and have never missed it. Never having to dump/clean a black water tank is a definite yes for us.
Yeah I probably wouldn't miss dumping my black tank at ALL haha. Have you ever looked into installing a furnace after the fact?
You are welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope this video helped clear a few things up.
Thanks for the info! Just found your channel. I have an old 96 Jayco pop up and have been considering a 13 ft. Scamp. Must appreciated.
Sounds like we both got pretty lucky! Thanks for the comment. Happy Scamping friend.
if you are talking about the detachable wheel that goes on the hitch, you can buy one at any trailer store for $25 to $30.
@@tennesseeterri Thanks!
Do you think the water heater is worth it? Also, would you rather have a hand pump for the water
Very informative, very nicely presented and edited.
Well thank you ☺️ I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting.
You make very valid points

Really thinking hard about a scamp, seems like a nice middle ground between tent and big camper. Are you pretty satisfied?
I really love mine. They do have their quirks and the cushions that make up the bed are notoriously hard/uncomfortable. But it's not hard to get things dialed in. I'll be keeping mine for years and years.
Great video! Very helpful tips! Would love a video on operating a 3-way fridge if that’s what you got 😊
Happy Scamping!!
Oh and I’d love a cover but would need to pick it up in September on my way thru as I live in Canada 😅
Good luck!
For some reason Scamp charges way more for the outside shower than Casita or Escape.
Totally. I used to heat water on my Coleman stove and use the sea to summit pocket shower. It is super compact but effective! alnk.to/9xj022r
@@makb5354 that's brilliant. I love that solution. Thanks so much for sharing it with me!
Thanks for clarifying!

Absolutely love your content and Advice😊
Thank you so much 😊 I am really glad you are enjoying the channel.
Nice video. You can all the heat strip .... I am reasonably sure.
Hmmm. I wonder. I never looked into it. I think the furnace is sufficient for us since we do most of our camping without hookups.
The 54" wide bed is cool but how long is it? I want to be able to stretch out fully.
It is 74in long except at the rounded corners in the back. It is basically full size mattress dimensions with 2 rounded corners at the back.
@@BackcountryDirtbag Thanks!
@@FreddietheFly no problem 👍
Can someone 5ft 5 lie north-souh?
You can find the 7 way protector mount on Amazon here:
amzn.to/3SUBiCY
It should be pretty easy to install.
We use our outdoor shower for dishwashing and other cleaning chores.
Yeah I know a lot of folks use it that way. I just prefer to heat water on my Coleman stove and wash in basins on the camp table since we usually boondock. But there is no wrong way to do it! Hope you have some amazing adventures out there.
This was great - Thanks!
@@TheWBWoman you're welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful.
Highly recommend the Power Queen 100ah lifepo battery! Cheap and tons of power!
Thanks for the rec! I lucked into a great deal on a Gofort when they were crowd funding and it's been flawless for 4 years now. So when that one finally dies I'll look at the Power Queen. Thanks.
Good stuff thank you BCDB!
No problem 🤙
Also, does your fridge run on propane? If not, do you wish it did or does the battery do the job
I watched the whole video but I missed how much it cost. You explained everything good I am older and probably missed it thanks
But you can see a lot of the photos and an article about the equipment I use on my website:

Helpful video! Thanks for posting
@@todddonaldson7974 glad to hear it and you're welcome 🙂
I need a bed thats 75 inches, 54 is way too small. Im 6 3". Btw great vid.
@@philo5096 hahaha relatable... and I'm only 5'7" I want to be able to fully starfish tho. Thanks and thank you for the comment. Cheers!
Well detailed review and thank you 🙏🏼
You are welcome 😁 thanks for watching and for the positive feedback.
Awesome review!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great review
Thanks friend. I always look forward to your comments.
@@BackcountryDirtbag :-)
Excellent Video!
Thanks!
I’ve been camping for 25 + years, and have never used the outside shower
Very relatable.
Really like the 7 pin storage/protector. Found on Amazon and adding to my squaredrop trailer.
Nice review of the options!
Hey thanks! Glad you found something helpful for your set up 🙂 I appreciate you letting me know.
Never buying a trailer but I still watching your videos!
You are an amazing human being Ev. TY for always being so wonderfully supportive ❤
Does your model have a tv??
It doesn't, but it did come pre-wired for it so it would be very simple to install one after market.
Yup that's exactly how I used to do it on extended tent camping adventures. Where there is a will there's a way right?
VERY helpul, merci beaucoup!
You're welcome 😁
As long as it’s under 17k, with some key options, I may consider one.
They are pretty great and there are always used ones hitting the market too.
@@BackcountryDirtbag I’ll look into it. I’m also trying to get a tiny home in our side property to rent out. My wife is no “down” with both. Sigh.
Yeah we all have our priorities. Good luck to you no matter what you decide to do!
Great great video :)
TY! I hope it helped.
Very cool camper but sheesh, they say "buy direct" to save money but boy do they nickel and dime you with way overpriced options.
There is a great video on how they work here: getautowbrake.com/products/autowbrake-trailer-mounted-electric-brake-control?srsltid=AfmBOorG1XVIe4AurRwO9FTgj3DiO5yVDizinssAyqx5wmAvJ9AB4jkk
Hope this helps!
We got a brake controller installed in our tow vehicle. Why would you want the control for the brakes attached to your keys? Very bad idea for a number of reasons.
@tennesseeterri those are the keys for my trailer not my tow vehicle's keys.
Nice
🙂
So much saved by not getting that 1050 awning.
Plus you don't have to worry about the wind suddenly picking up and ripping it off the trailer 🤙
Common spelling error but trailer Brakes not breaks.
Haha yeah you can expect plenty of those on this channel I am severely dyslexic. Can't fix it now 🤷

You’re really pretty where is your wife?
Sir, I know you probably think this comment is a harmless complement but it is not. It fetishizes us. Comments like these are the very reason my wife does not want to participate in videos.
When we are fetishized, there’s an extreme loss of respect. There’s a taking-away, stripping of that respect and it’s so gut-wrenching because it feels like a loss of humanity. You are turning us into objects. It feels horrible to be reduced to pieces and parts.
My UA-cam channel is not the correct place for that energy.
The major question is WHY NOT JUST BUY A FOREST RIVER RV? U get so much more for half the price
You are absolutely welcome to. My 2nd RV was a forest river. They simply aren't my cup of tea.
I fail to see how this is relevant to a video about Scamp options.
Is theft of a camper that possible?. Can you explain the pop up covers you spoke of for the doors?
@@pammied52 If a trailer isn't secured anyone with a tow ball can connect up to it and drive away. There are very high theft rates of vehicles and trailers where I live so I try not to make myself an easy target.
The pop up canopy I mentioned is discussed with pictures in an article I wrote about all my favorite camping gear. They are a bit bulky so they don't work for everyone but we absolutely love ours and never camp without it.
Here's the article: scamperlife.com/2024/01/07/camping-gear-that-elevates-the-experience/
@@BackcountryDirtbag So are you referring more to where you park it where you live or in rv parks and Harvest Host sites??
@@pammied52 The area I live/store it has high theft rates but I also lock it up at parks/campgrounds any time I leave it unattended. I use my proven industries lock at the very least. amzn.to/3rguFQq
