Oscar winner Jack Lemmon on the US State Department's backlash to the political thriller "Missing".

- Controversial political thriller Missing was based on a true story, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. It’s set in Chile 1973-74 against the backdrop of the military coup d'état which was supported by the US Government, to replace President Salvador Allende.
But shortly after the film was released, the US State Department issued a lengthy denial about aspects and incidents in the film.
At the time, Jack was one of Hollywood’s most versatile stars. He’d won Oscars for his performances in Mr Roberts and Save the Tiger. And, throughout his career, was nominated 8 times.
His other films included The Front Page, Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, The Odd Couple, JFK and the China Syndrome.
However, the official government reactions to Missing triggered public controversy, personal insults directed at Jack. And unexpected boosts to its box-office takings.
It was certainly a challenging role. But, as Jack explained to me, he took it for a number of reasons.
Jack accumulated more than 100 credits in an extraordinary career in which he won Best Actor Awards around the world, including a number at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1988 he received the Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.
His last performance was uncredited, as the Narrator, Old Hardy Greaves, in The Legend of Bagger Vance, in 2000.
Jack died in June 2001 in Los Angeles from bladder cancer.

This is a film that rocked my spirit. The realities of this sad period in history, are truly difficult to take in, but it imperative that they are brought to light. Jack Lemmon & Sissy Spacek are masterful, as always. Each & every time Missing comes on, I am compelled to watch. Each time I have, it breaks my heart and I find myself crying, as if it were the first. I urge everyone to watch this amazing piece of cinema, in no small part thanks to Costa Gravis' .

Charles Horman went missing but eventually turned up in a coffin. Thousands of people went missing in Chile during the Pinochet era without a trace.
The ones that went missing were dangerous criminals, that is to say drug dealers etc.
There would have been the odd civilised casualty as there are these days everywhere
@@rene63 I was under the impression that the missing were political opponents and not criminal drug dealers.
@@rumpraisin if only life were that straight forward. It is so much deeper and more complex than just what we are being told by one side.
Allende has so much dirt, yet, no mention on mainstream.
@@rene63 I'm aware of this.Nothing is either just black or white. The accustaion from the left is that Allende's democratically elected government was overthrown by Pinochet with the help of the US because of US corporate interests in Chile. They also blame the US for creating economic chaos in Chile prior to the military coup. I'm aware that Allende wasn't popular with everyone in Chile and that he sometimes acted liked a dictator in imposing his ideas on the Chilean people of how in his view a country should be run. That having been said, there is in my opinion no justification for killing people like for example Charles Horman for simply having different political views or in his case knowing too much about government secrets.
@@rene63 you have much to learn about the dictatorships in South America during the 70s when drugs weren't even an issue..
This is one reason why I love my country, but fear and mistrust my government. Vietnam, Watergate, Iran-Contra, CIA illegal covert and clandestine operations, etc.
Why didn't Gavras ever make a film about the plight of Palestinians?
He did, it was called Hanna K., but it was told more from the Israeli perspective and reduced the occupation of Palestine to melodrama
A great movie with great performances all round, a pity it did not show footage of Allende inviting Castro to visit Chile,which after all signed the death warrant of Allende.
That is ridiculous. Allende's days were numbered the day he set foot in office. Lucky are the ones like Chavez who at least live to see their terms in office to the end, coup attempts notwithstanding. Read "Open Veins of Latin America" if you think Castro is the only Latin American leader to attract the ire of the US...
