  • CHRISTOPHER REEVE RARELY SEEN 1980 TV INTERVIEW
In 1978 a young New York actor by the name of Christopher Reeve won a movie role that would change for ever his career and life.
At the time, Chris had a few television and film credits and had co-starred opposite Katherine Hepburn in a Broadway play.
He had won the dual role of Clark Kent and Superman in the first of what would be a series of big-screen, special effects movies to bring to life the comic-strip hero who came, as baby, from the planet Krypton.
Superman was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Quite a challenge, even for an actor with the help of state-of-the-art special effects.
To no one’s surprise Superman The Movie was a smash worldwide hit. And Chris was a superstar!
Shortly after he completed the second film, in 1980, I went to New York to chat to him…and find out how he was coping with the instant global fame…and just how serious was his approach to bringing a super-hero comic-strip character to life.
By the way, the interview took place in Chris’s, then, new duplex apartment just off Central Park in New York.
When I turned up with cameraman David Etherton, Chris opened the door in an old shirt, jeans turned half way up his legs, a growing beard…and a half-full glass of wine.
The PR lady had forgotten to ring and remind him of the interview.
But, the true professional that he was, Chris said “hang on a few minutes while I have shower”….and soon re-appeared for our chat.
I interviewed him twice more…at the Cannes Film Festival for The Bostonians and then Switching Channels.
Like most people, I was saddened to hear of his accident, but shattered when I heard that he had died.
Chris was a truly unforgettable human being. I was honored to have spent time with him.

Reeve was an Oscar-worthy actor, and he’s the ONLY man, who’s ever truly made his Clark and Superman very DISTINCT from each other, it’s absolutely amazing to see! Great actor, and quite bright too, I mean he had an intellectual side to him that few actors have today, especially at such a young age too. Reeve wasn't even 30 in this interview, yet he spoke with the erudition of a 60 year old college professor or something like that, and keep in mind, this was before the internet too, so knowledge wasn't as easily accessible back then. Not saying Christopher Reeve was an intellectual giant, but you can tell that this guy was more than just a good-looking actor. He could play the piano and was even a pilot, and played a pilot too in The Aviator, and because he was a pilot, he also knew a lot about flight and that's also why he was perfect for Superman, because he really understood how to make Superman's flying so much more believable and realistic, than say, John Travolta or Arnold Schwarzenegger would be capable of. He's so far also the tallest Superman. No Superman actor comes even close to Christopher Reeve, and I don't think any Superman actor will ever be as perfect for the role as Reeve was. Christopher Reeve really set the benchmark standard for all Superman actors, and he actually made Superman into a serious superhero action star, that could be taken seriously, from what used to be sort of a caricature comic book character that was similar to Popeye or Tarzan, I mean just look at Adam West's Batman or the George Reeves' Superman, to get an idea of what a clown show the superhero genre was. All post-Reeve Superman actors owe a great deal to Christopher Reeve that they were given a career boost by playing Superman and are part of a legacy, similar to being a James Bond actor, and not just Superman actors, but the superhero genre in general (Avengers and so on). If there ever was a man born to play Superman, it was Christopher Reeve; he was destined to become Superman on the silver screen. This is not true for all Superman actors, and some of them in that role, are a misunderstanding, like Brandon Routh. And Christopher Reeve was a great man too, kind, humble, good role model even when not playing Superman; all around a "swell" guy ;)

I think you hit it on the head. Not only was he physically perfect for the role and played the role with the right balance of earnestness, humility and optimism, but Reeve also gave off intellectual vibes through how he speaks, his mannerisms, his facial expressions. This is a man who, if you met him, you would just feel like this guy is nobility. Not in the sense of being an arrogant aristocrat, but in the way he carries himself that makes you feel his is of high character. And for the role Superman, that's quite important because otherwise you are just a good looking man with big muscles (which is how I see Henry Cavill). He has the looks, the build (although he's too short, to be honest), but what he really lacks is the high character that Reeve has in spades. And we saw after his injury that this high character was authentic. It wasn't just an affected facade coming out of good schooling, good parenting (although that's part of it), it's also from just innate character, We are just super lucky that the director and producer stumbled on Reeve and had the good judgment to pick him for the role. Everyone else that came after him has failed to even come close to equalling his portrayal. Routh lacked the confidence, ntellectual intensity and quite frankly, the acting chops. I could not even sit through Routh's movie because he looked /sounded like he was reading lines the whole time.

I disagree, with internet is a knowledge advantage to the old days. Yes it is easier to get stuff on the internet, but back then you had to go to the library and spend more time reading and you would see other books that might be of interest. Usually you would read entire books that you might of not read in the first place. So, I think you would be more deeply rounded in subjects verses shallow browsers like the internet. Plus, you would have no cell phone interruptions. Come to think of it, I believe we had a knowledge advantage in the old days. As you can tell by Christopher Reeve's interview, both the interviewer and interviewee were deeper in thought and not just looking for a click bait laugh.

@@lazarochavez1absolutely correct. Also the education in both the States & Australia was well rounded with an expectation of being a good conversationalist.
As a retired teacher I can say with certainty that one needs to acquire knowledge for knowledge sake: it’s how we build our personality & interests, how we evolve through the development of curiosity we have in others, their culture & capabilities. Skimming the internet won’t increase our knowledge nor our ability.

I've never seen this before. Totally different than I expected. A lot of that has to do with the pace of talking, when he answers, he doesn't equivocate at all, he has specific things to say and he says them without any umms and ahhs. It borders on the vibe of stern confidence, and I guess the reason I wasn't expecting this is that I expected him to have mannerisms more like Superman and Clark. Which is a real short changing of his acting ability. So it's quite a privilege to see this side to him, this normal life side to him, it's a lot less mild than I'd imagined.

I had never heard that take on Brando while filming in London in '77, that he was behaving like a "country squire" and "sending up" the crew. Reeve was one of the few actors to have worked with Brando who, even years afterward, didn't go on and on about what an acting legend he was, or that he was intimidated by Brando's presence.

He is really restrained here when talking about Brando. There is an appearance on Letterman from 1982 when he promoted Deathtrap at the time. He didn't have much flattering things to say, thinking Brando was unprofessional. I wish you had interviewed him for Superman III later. I know he strongly disliked the script but did the movie anyway. I wonder why considering how adamant he is here that the writing would need to be good.

A really miss Chris, brilliant actor and such a great guy and very down to earth gent. I often wonder what if Chris never got on that horse on a fateful day, would he probably still be with us today? Almost an impossible question although we all know that Christopher Reeve loved horse riding! Sadly life is full of many what if's.
Same goes for Margot Kidder who played Louis Lane who sadly passed away in 2018 who was somewhat of an activist upto her lattar years. Really sad to think the duo are no longer with us!
One thing is for sure as many of the actor's who've played Superman after Chris will all testify am sure especially Henry Cavill and that is that Christopher was their main motivational on-screen inspiration for this particular kind of role. No doubt extremely difficult it was too to pull it off but as far as cast directing goes am sure Chris would be very pleased by Henry Cavill's portrayal of Clark Kent by bringing the character upto the modern age! But there's one thing we can all say for certainty am sure and that is they could all look upto Christopher (no pun intended) in how best to express the Superman character along with his alter ego Clark Kent!

He was an ambitious and perfectionist man. His role power was mechanical. His silly hobbies were the end of him. What I loved though. Superman was the idol movie of my youth. He came and went from the fucking world.

I had met Chris Reeve on two separate occasions back in the summers of 1984 and ‘85 at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Without a doubt, he was the NICEST celebrity I’ve ever met. Not a lot of “Class Acts” and gentle souls found in Hollywood. Chris was BOTH. May he and his wife, Dana, ALWAYS Rest In Peace.

“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.”
    - Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996.

I can't believe knowone recognized him as a major celebrity after that first film became a blockbuster. Maybe that was just him being humble. By the time Superman II was released though he had to have started being mobbed by fans and being recognized alot more.

If you compare the interview with some of his later interviews you can see how he mellowed out. I can see how Margot Kidder explained how he changed after his injury.
