  • I embarked on the impossible task of analyzing Love Story past and present. The moment I heard But Daddy I Love Him on The Tortured Poets Departement I knew it struck a chord with that old Taylor Swift style of songwriting that was first evident in Love Story from her second studio album Fearless. So, I took this as an opportunity to analyze the iconic, instant classic songs that truly define so much of Swift's unique craft. From the lyricism to the metaphors to the autobiographical songwriting, this sect of Swift's creativity is quintessential. Analyzing the two songs in their respective historical context has been so fun! Hopefully, I was able to convey just a little bit of Taylor's genius in this video! :)

Are there any other songs on TTPD that you instantly thought connected with some of her older work? I find parallels all the time!

Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me? and Cassandra gave the Look what You made me do Vibes,Especially the Music Video
They Caged me? in the mv,you see her in a cage swinging back and forth
and It obviously sounds like she's talking about that time where the Media called her a Snake like "if you want me to be a Snake or a Witch then i'll be one" and then Cassandra is talking about the situation "They filled my cell with snakes i regret to say do you believe me now" which is referencing the media calling her a snake, and then its referencing the call situation where he made up that lie about her. the vibes of Cassandra give more Mad Woman but the Lyrics give Rep Vibes

My perspective on the ending of BDILH is referencing her new relationship with Travis more so than the “imagined” happy ending with Matty. The ending is the only portion that is written in present tense where as the rest of the song is in past tense. I think it’s one of the reasons she felt it necessary to include the line, “F*ck ‘em, it’s over”. The fact that she uses “lady” in the last chorus and Travis referrers to her as ‘his lady’ further perpetuates the notion that she’s talking about her current relationship. For me, this is one of the aspects that makes this song even more iconic- instead of having to create a narrative that leads to a happy ending, she simply continued writing truth because finally, within her real life she has found a happy ending…

I’ve heard this perspective!! The idea is growing on me but I just don’t know if I’m fully on board. Taylor has said before that she doesn’t move onto another song until the one she’s working on is finished so it seems unlikely that she’d be writing this song for two months between Matty and Travis.
