The long-awaited discussion of The Alchemy by Taylor Swift is here! I think I had a little too much fun making this breakdown because I feel like I just spoke in song lyrics the whole time! So many lyrics from The Tortured Poets Department and other albums helped give The Alchemy the context it needed. So many Swifties think The Alchemy is about Taylor and Travis. However, this Swiftie sees som...

After weeks of listening to The Tortured Poets Department and analyzing Taylor Swift's choice for the album opener, I understand "Fortnight" as a song so much more. I wanted to sit down and do a deep dive into the song, with the historical and symbolic context in mind. Doing a lyrical analysis is such a good way to find that deeper meaning and there are so many metaphors and timelines to pick u...

I embarked on the impossible task of analyzing Love Story past and present. It's been an interesting ride analyzing the onslaught of mixed reviews immediately following the release of Taylor Swift's 11th studio album "The Tortured Poets Department" and the 15 additional songs with the surprise drop of "The Anthology." With publications like Billboard referring to it as "messy, unguarded, and undeniably triumphant," The Sunday Times calling it a "five-star pleasure," Va...

    It's like the ending of a movie, or the grand finalle of a series. Listening to The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, was like binging a show, and The Manuscript was like that perfect ending that is also a triumphant new beginning (also because I cheated a little bit and listened to ATWTMV and watched the short film before coming back just for The Manuscript, as people were advising to), the kind of cathartic epilogue that makes you cry tears of happiness for the protagonist while standing to applaud to the TV screen like you're in the theater. It was an amazing experience, and now, I want to go through all of it again. This was like the AVENGERS: ENDGAME of pop music for me! So yeah, it was beyond awesomeness!. A beautiful album.

    My perspective on the ending of BDILH is referencing her new relationship with Travis more so than the “imagined” happy ending with Matty. The ending is the only portion that is written in present tense where as the rest of the song is in past tense. I think it’s one of the reasons she felt it necessary to include the line, “F*ck ‘em, it’s over”. The fact that she uses “lady” in the last chorus and Travis referrers to her as ‘his lady’ further perpetuates the notion that she’s talking about her current relationship. For me, this is one of the aspects that makes this song even more iconic- instead of having to create a narrative that leads to a happy ending, she simply continued writing truth because finally, within her real life she has found a happy ending…

    • @ThePoeticApothecary
      @ThePoeticApothecary 13 днів тому

      I’ve heard this perspective!! The idea is growing on me but I just don’t know if I’m fully on board. Taylor has said before that she doesn’t move onto another song until the one she’s working on is finished so it seems unlikely that she’d be writing this song for two months between Matty and Travis.

    I believe that her saying "That child’s play back in school is forgiven under my rule" might refer to Travis getting kicked off his College football team for a positive Marijuana test. (Another thing that I thought of was, Travis and Jason Kelce are also notoriously known to have BOTH been kicked out of preschool when they were young. 😂 Jason hurt a kid playing a game and Travis threw a chair at the teacher. Lol. They've talked about it on their Podcast. Jason's wife Kylie was on that day and looked horrified like, 'Good Lord... I married into this?' 😆) Just my humble opinion. 😊 P.S. Travis said this is one of his favorite songs from TTPD. He said So High School and The Alchemy during an interview at Kelce Jam. 😂 Ultimately, whoever she's writing about is her business. I think it's a great song, and I love it.

      My interpretation with smallest man closed Matty chapter in TTPD, the song start like a heart beating is like the rhythm in all the song her last relationship left her almost dying, she explains the hospital was a drag, but she start to come back as she used to be before, as he tried to reached her she circle him on a map is the polite way to reference that she put him on a map (viral TikTok’s ), the child play back in school was his W**d problem for that reason was spelled from school and felt that he disappoint his family, one of his big regrets, but she is ok with that. Ditch the clowns cut the amateurs is the viral incident with his new publicist, heroin with an e is because she is his heroine he always refers as the woman of his dreams like a strong, smart woman and the joke is the way he talks he also make jokes with cr**ck and w**d, is very clear in the podcast, blokes warm benches is a term of soccer both Joe Matty were the warm benchers in soccer that’s not good and the part of the trophy is al football match reference, I don’t think is related exactly with superbowls as many interpret because she ask where is the trophy? And only give trophies on superbowl and conference final, so I think was a regular game

    I loved your article. I hear your writing chops as well. TTPD is full of depth and people definitely need more time to understand it. It's so blatantly honest and deep, I have no idea how the current society of the ADHD - type tic tok world would have the attention span to get what she is writing. That seems to come from the Swifties (thank God). Your article incapsulated much of what she was saying and was well written.. So, I want to thank you for writing it. I wish your review was out there with the other reviews who didn't get it. Their reviews seem to mirror each other. Did they have a meeting where they all had the same talking points?

      Thank you so much! Unfortunately only a few publications seem to pump out opinionated reviews that hold weight and then all the others use those as primary material for their articles. Like certain people are likely assigned to write the TTPD review piece ahead of time and then other publications want to capitalize on the buzz when they come out but they don’t need a Swiftie to write it because they’re just collecting primary source material and regurgitating opinions. That’s why I think the original reviews are so important because they set the landscape. However, seeing as the New York Times got the name of her album wrong they clearly were not the right writers for the job.

  • @mikedebruyn

    I am a bit torn about writing this. As you said you have given us your interpretation and you kept that even knowing that a lot of people think this is about Travis and, as interpretation is the revenge of the intellect upon art you are, not wrong even when you in my opinion are :) I also do not want to diminish your joy in this song as you describe 4 and half minutes into the video, so please stop reading if someone responding to your request at the end of the video, asking to post if they think you are wrong, and explain why they think it is about Travis would diminish your enjoyment of the song. 1 This is more a question springing from my observation of a lot of people that want to link this to Matty. If the heroin(e) lines had not been in here would you still have the same opinion? The reason i ask that is because to me it seems that a lot of people's reasoning short circuits there and go heroin = Matty and the word is to difficult for Travis, and no amount of reasoning is possible after that. 2 Positioning. Your argument about who this is about would hold a lot more power if it was the second song on the album. Putting what is more or less a love against all odds song as you describe it it right after 3 songs that say you betrayed me, used me, tried to ruin what was supposed to be the best summer of my life and were a spineless basterd is how Quentin Tarantino did Pulp Fiction but not how most people order things in their life. Would this be placed as the second song on the album if would make a lot more sense as it can be seen as an introduction on how the relation came to be. 3 The song is chock-full of football references even when there are other words that you can use to say the same she choose to use them, that just makes no sense especially if you keep in mind that there is 3/4 year between the end of her relationship with Matty and when the album came out and for most of that time you had a relationship that seems to be pretty happy with a football player. Would it not be an ultimate betrayal to that new love to coat a love song to another man in terminology from the sport where he is one of the best in his position of all time in? If that would ever be true I will never listen to a song of hers again, she would be smaller then the smallest man to me, especially since: 4 Paris night 4, Travis was there and she dressed 1989 in the Chiefs colours. She starts the surprise songs by asking: Do you guys know this is our 87 show? And immediately went to singing The Alchemy. 87 is Travis jersey number. That would be beyond rude to do that if it were not about him. 5 This is speculation, but i think that Taylor was in a mental really dark place after first her 6 year relation ended and then the person who she saw as "the one that got away" and build up and attributed so much to in her dreams turned out to be a fake. I listened to Erin and Charissa's podcast where they reacted to his bracelet story after they already reacted to it on social media before that. They said that Travis is a pretty happy go lucky person, without any real baggage, and someone who will give you a good time going out with him even if nothing comes from it. Please give our friend Travis a chance, he is a great guy you wont be disappointed they said. I think that someone on Taylor's team saw these type of reactions and pushed her towards him for some uncomplicated good time hoping it would get her out of her "i can do it with a broken heart" period. As i said this is all speculation but this is more or less how i see that they got together because i do not think Taylor knew who he was. 6 This touches on the iconic perfect relationship that you describe for Travis and Taylor around 4:30. I think you are wrong there, they had a lot of backlash once it became public but they hinted that it wasn't easy before that. Yes a part of the community saw them as a great match but a lot of people saw in Travis their high school nemesis, the jock that bullied them, stole their friend, never acknowledged them or worse dumped them after something like in fifteen. A lot of people tried to dig up dirt on Travis, his squirle tweet from 2011 or so got him ridiculed a lot, it got used as a sign that he could not hold a candle on the intelligence spectrum next to the genius of Taylor, that girl from his dating show that grabbed her 15 minutes of fame, people questioned his intelligence, saw him as only trying to use her for her fame etc. And then there were all the Brad's and Chad's for which she ruined football, that she was just using him to write new songs, that she as a maneater was not a girl for a good guy like him etc. He had to move out of his first house and then had to move out where he stayed after that because he had people standing in front of his window or something so he had to buy a new house in a secluded gated community or so to get some rest in his hometown. There were a lot of things that were not easy for them at the start of their relation and it took some time before it became what it is now in the eyes of most people. For me the two things that changed it all were the first game she watched and Argentina. 7 Now to get into the song. Title. Remember Taylor in her, time? interview gave a bit of a strange response about when they started hanging out? This all started when Travis put me on blast on his podcast, which i thought was Metal as hell! Afterwards everyone was going, that is weird phrasing, and all the Swifties fell back to their mantra: "But what does it mean!?". The relation started as base Metal but they performed Alchemy on it? 8 Verse 1 back in love, when she was in a mood that let her write The Prophecy in which she questioned everything (when i first heard TTPD i asked myself if they has a 24/7 watch on Taylor for a while after those 2 relation disasters because it sounded dark!), followed by a reference to the tiktok craze where mostly women were filming them telling a football loving person that Travis only became famous because of her. 9 Touch down is a mix between landing and scoring but the obvious football reference i explained earlier how i think about that. Amateurs, team, clown is a reference to his PR person that retweeted a photo of herself in the box at one of the games with a clown emoji over Taylors face. Taylor is the crown. Sign on your heart, type in google Travis Kelce heartsign and look at the images. You will see Travis making a Fearless heartsign, with his 87 gloves, at the Bill's game to her. 11 Cool, childs play, They both have history, not with each other but they still have one of them is in the next verse 12 Blokes i see as all the British boys she went out before but who were substituted out more or less like you say but to me they include Matty. 13 Heroine Travis got kicked out of his college team for smoking weed, athletes are rumored to do a lot of things to try and get better so i bet they had a talk about that if it went any further then that. Some of the lyrics in Taylors song can give an indication that she has been high but that it never went further then that because her escape has always been song writing not pills etc. So while he might not have that word in his vocabulary Taylor might have asked him that and he quipped like as a female Marvel hero? 14 Winning streak is a reference to some people blaming Taylor for or be afraid that she would get blamed if the Chiefs started loosing but the NFL had stats that Travis was actually performing better with her there then without her and they kept winning! 15 Shirts off, lift you up. This could be a reference to the first time she met the whole family and Jason was the one without shirt that jumped out of the box in Buffalo into the freezing cold to help that girl that made a sign for Taylor show it to her. Cheers chanted was changed into Chiefs chanted by her in one of the mashups. No chance, back to back superbowls is almost unheard off. He just comes running over to me -> Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me?

    The fans seem to think that a song written about Matty cheapens it somehow and are still in denial about some of the less obvious songs. But she told us it's the worst men she writes about the best. These are her experiences, whether we like it or not. One of the main reasons this song is not one of my faves is because I couldn't make sense of the lyrics. The chorus and bridge seem to have obvious football references, but the rest of the song doesn't have anything to do with Travis. It being about Matty makes much more sense. The fact that the bridge turned out to be something that happened with Travis is pretty bonkers. And she definitely has leaned into the theory that it is about Travis by playing it at the 87th show.

    I think we need to look at the progression of the album. (the first part not the anthology) The Alchemy is the 2nd last song on the album. Befor that song she sings "I can fix him " -about matt. Then he was the loss of her life (loml). After that its" i can do it with a broken heart" . Meaning her and Matty are no longer together. THEN, it "the smallest man who ever lived" -Matty again. telling him she doesnt want him back . then its the Alchemy, the chemistry is what she means by Alchemy. this song is CLEARLY about Travis. The child play back in school is where he talks about the "kiss marry kill " interview he did where he said he would marry Kim Kardashian. also, she sang this song to Travis at a show. This song is 100% about Travis.

      @@ThePoeticApothecary I did. and she changed the lyrics in Karma just for her shows when Travis is there. she still sings the regular lyrics when he isn't there, so I do understand that meaning can change for sure. but i feel like the lyrics are so clearly about Travis. With the winning streak is him winning the super bowl. the bridge is about is about being at the games. Like in my own comment, not this reply, the progression of the album is the most telling part. she likes to tell a story, and the first part of the album is a very clear story. Matty is out of the picture with the smallest man who ever lived. shes moving on! but i understand that everyone's interpertation can be different based on how they see/ feel things.

      @@jadezammit4372 the album was announced before the superbowl even happened and the track list was leaked well before that. Plus, since the alchemy was on the original album it would have needed to be completed months prior for the vinyls. Vinyls take months to press which means the alchemy would have been written and completely finished before the end of 2023. Also having so long London be a track five doesn’t completely fit the storyline of the tracklist since guilty as sin comes after. Plus, Down bad comes before fresh out the slammer. The order doesn’t tell the chronological story to me at all. I know it doesn’t matter but this is my truth 😂😂😂

    47:00 what if she is using the phrase "I love you" in a general sense, like all these "I love you" that I've said and that I've heard and the fact that I'm always in love with someone is ruining my life? Just a thought although I feel that the one you mentioned about her referencing the poem Matty posted might be pretty spot on! Also I think that the "there we were together" combined with "comment on my sweater" is a reference to the 1975 song When we are together, I don't know if you've listened to it! 🤍

    • @ThePoeticApothecary

      I haven’t listened to much 1975 but I know they have a song called “she’s American” and this song is supposedly the death of the American dream and talks about another fortnight lost in America! Could be a connection there too!!

    A lot of the stuff in your breakdown was really interesting, and I especially jibe with the braided poetry idea--I've been thinking that about Fortnight, The Black Dog, and some other TTPD songs since I first heard them! But for me one of the biggest themes in Fortnight (especially when the video is considered) is the fraught relationship between art and real life, especially for artists like Taylor Swift (and Clara Bow, who is visually referenced in the video and has a whole song on the album). To me, it seems like TS is grappling with the blurry line between the fictionalized versions of her life (whether media portrayals or her own music) and the way she experiences reality--the way they bleed into each other. In Clara Bow's case, she was thought to literally have gone insane over love. And I think a lot of Taylor's lyrics and visuals reference the fact that idealized or fantasy images of love sometimes have real effects on our relationships, either after the fact or even in the middle of them. The very title of the album seems to be about this issue: are we poets because we're tortured, or are we tortured because we're poets?

    I think 'How did it end' is for people like you who are who are using her music to play detective. You want to know what happened and make a video and/or tweet about it.

    • @ThePoeticApothecary
      @ThePoeticApothecary Місяць тому

      I’ve been following Taylor’s relationships since 2006 because they inspired her music and she would leave clues in her albums for us to play detective so I don’t think it’s fair to completely demonize the relationship she built with her fans. It’s true on some level that she may be giving this song to fans but I think it even has to do with close friends who know her. “One gasp and then, how did it end?” Then they rush home to call their cousin and spill the tea. It’s human nature to be curious about relational dynamics of people in our lives. I think this was such an important and nuanced way of discussing the complications of a relationship deteriorating over time and how hard it is to even put the reasoning into words.

    I'm with your Mom in not giving af about the tabloid nature of her dating life/trying to decipher who every song, lyric, emotion is about. And you even took it to another level speculating who the younger woman the guy in the black dog was with (Allison?!). Smh. Imo all that does take away from the art, as well as just being parasocial and weird. You're very smart though, and know more about her personal life than any other reactor I've seen, so there's definitely a lane for you.

    • @ThePoeticApothecary

      Ohhh I know I wish I had cut out that Allison part. It’s hard because knowing details helps me connect with songs I may not understand and I love being able to help people understand what she’s trying to say or the emotions she’s singing about. But I don’t know how to do that without feeling like we’re being too invasive.
