The problem with the Doom 1 and 2 OST is that id software never made a proper OPL3 conversion - eg proper stereo. There's a youtuber "Kvee" who's made some converted tracks but I wish that had been done officially. This video is NOT how the game actually sounded on FM synthesis back in 1994, this is using the standard Microsoft software MIDI that actually came out years later, but when the Doom sourceports came out they had no native .MUS support because id software licensed their sound code and couldn't release it open source, so everybody used this sound format as a fallback. The original OPL2 sounded more analogous to a Genesis sound chip, the only people who heard wavetable synth like this back in 93/94 were people who had expensive soundcards, although I'd argue they sound better than this.

The SC-55 was released in 1993, months before the first doom was released so, despite being absurdly expensive at the time, several people listened the game this way.

The OPL line (and especially not the OPL2) is not a bad chip though. (to commenter: I'm not saying you think it's bad, I'm just saying this because MIDI conversions are why most OPL2 soundtracks suck!) If you'd like to see an OPL2 used right, check out Stephane Picq's MegaRace (PC) soundtrack.

Also, Bobby Price said that the game OST was intended to work first on the SC-55 but the "GenMIDI" limitations around that time made the music sound limited compared to how they potentially sounded using a proper sound engine.

@@nicco1690 that's right. This game sounds limited in the most of the chips because the MUS lumps were made in order to make them capable of being played on the most sound chips they can, focusing on portability over quality. That forced the composers to put more emphasis on the motifs rather on the whole melody.

In fairness, most DOS games worked this way, largely so they could apply one MIDI across many different sound setups. Even the older OPL2 can do some pretty cool stuff if you tailor your song specifically for it.

Love the bass and snare synchronization in this track.
That’s mostly why I like the track anyways, besides the guitars.

A lot of these deconstructions reveal a load of smaller musical works inside the larger piece. It's interesting that this sounds like a jumble of notes until it goes together.

This is cool! Could you make an oscilloscope deconstruction of Mist Ache from Rise of the Triad? It's an amazing atmospheric track that I'd love to see.
