As a British person, I believe that if you're going to make "adult animation" based on the royal family, have British people write and voice it. If anyone knows the jokes and humour it's us. Most people just go: Tea lol
I don’t know why so many of the cartoons that are supposedly labeled for only “adults” are some of the most childish and immature shows on television. i think tv shows like Bojack Horseman is the example that all adult shows should follow that your whole show doesn’t have to be fart joke!
I just thought the idea of using the real life children, instead of fictional versions, was really bad taste, imagine being 8 years old and a bunch of people who’ve never met you make a cartoon about you being a brat. Shame on Sophie turner for voicing Princess Charlotte, when she threw a wobbler about the press taking pictures of her own child.
I haven’t seen this, but it feels like someone’s just trying to cash in on British royal falling being in the news. It doesn’t seem like they are meant to characters to be cared about but humor comes from us mocking them for being terrible. I could tell the servants were supposed to be likable just form the desings before it was said in this video (and that two people next to each other were gay because they were good looking lol, these shows are so predictable).
Cynical Reviews said it best: "You can tell this show was made BY Americans FOR Americans." Edit: You guys I'm an American too, why are you apologizing
I agree with Mark about adult animation practically being forced to be comedies. Apparently unless you're Gendy Tarkofski, who was allowed to bring back Samurai Jack as an adult show, as well as Primal, then you're stuck with raunchy animated comedy shows.
Tartakovsky has the experience and recognition to make what he wants. Execs know that his work will do well and it's low risk because of his reputation. But for someone less known making more artistic animation in the same vein, it's difficult.
@@alicev1500 animation is about experimentation. Ecpsecially good animation. All the shows over the years we could've gotten that were vetoed by executives, all for shows like the one Mark just talked about. Why can't we have a stoo motion show, a beautiful or expressive 2d show, or a beautiful expressive 3d show. These shows are equivalent to early 2000's universal comedies. Good concepts, poor execution, over floods the market with so much trash that the genre slowly dies. Or has to mix with another to survive. Execs are shooting themselves in the foot.
The people who work on these shows don't seem to understand that the reason why adult animation is successful isn't just because of vulgar humor. The most important shows to come out of the genre (King of the Hill, Simpsons, Bojack, even Rick and Morty, and South Park) have a sense of heart in many of their stories, not to mention some clever writing as well.
They take one look at family guy and see it as a dumb show with comedic bits and celebrity humor and think they can replicate it. But they watch the show, they don't understand it.
The problem I have with "adult content" in general whether it's cartoons, movies or what have you, is that so much of it thinks that vulgarity for it's own sake is funny. It isn't. It's just stupid and cringe inducing. Vulgarity is fine if it serves the plot, as in Clerks 2 for example, but so often it's just there without any real reason. A good example of this is The Happytime Murders. Brian Henson WANTED to make a straight murder mystery but the studios wouldn't give him the money unless he changed it into an extremely vulgar "comedy", basically just because. Why? What purpose does that serve? All that does is insult the audience's intelligence.
@@airplanes_aren.t_real OMG EXACLY I was like "this has so much wasted potential of mystery and lore" instead the comedy ruined it and almost made me turn it off!!

Making fun of literal real life children in an adult cartoon just seems very mean spirited and cruel. Like, sure, the adult royals are public figures, and open to parody and satire (apparently the Queen has a good sense of humour about it), but making fun of actual kids who haven't done anything to criticize, to the point of creating an entire cartoon series about it just seems like a bad move.
Can you imagine being 8 and finding out some creepy adults just stole your image and name and everything, made their cartoon "character" be literally you, then made their show a depiction of what you personally do - just in drawing form...but voice acted by someone doing your accent, etc. Like WTF, what a mind trip. What the hell
Yeah, the idea itself turns me off. I know royal family has palaces and shit ton of money so they don't care but it's just bad taste. Not to mention stereotypes of british people. It's fun on memes but not on television. Hbo would be cancelled in a minute if they made same show about blacks
Excuse me? The artstyle DOES NOT look like Mr. Bean the Animated Series. While that show looks odd, there is some charm to the caricatures and the animation is smooth, stretchy and bouncy especially with Bean's facial expressions and movements. This looks more like a Family Guy fan thought he could be the next Seth MacFarlane and hired the cheapest animators he can find to make a Family Guy clone based on the royal family.
I though for sure this was a Seth McFarlane show like the way the mouths move is exactly the same, the flat boring movement- everything. They even have Stewie!

I feel a big problem with adult animation is the fact that theyre not treating them like cartoons. Have things be exaggerated, send characters to weird places, make them do crazy things, play with direction so every scene doesn't look like a generic two camera sitcom. These things are possible to do without it being overly fantastical. If you're doing a super grounded sitcom style with an emphasis on writing as the primary content then you may as well just have everything be sock puppets
Bojack Horseman is grounded, yet it's one of the best adult cartoons ever. Emotional realism is vital and groundedness in adult fiction can be done amazingly.

I worked on this crap at Bento Box Atlanta. It was an absolutely horrific experience beginning to end. Management was abusive and the animation, background, and character teams were working mandatory 50+ hour weeks to keep up with the ridiculous deadlines. If you fell behind, you were yelled at and threatened with termination, which caused a good chunk of the team just to burn out. The “creative” higher ups in LA thought they were making “art”. They would constantly shit on “rigged” animation too (even though it’s a fact that rigged animation can look as good if not better then hand drawn… just look at anything Mercury does) and told us that they specifically wanted a “hand drawn” look to the show… translation, they want it to look like Family Guy where the characters are all standing around stiff as a board. Any and all attempts to add… actual animation… to the animation was crushed and the creators were always sending us condescending notes when they something we did didn’t fit their “artistic vision”. That being said, ALL the artists who worked on this are TOP NOTCH and were completely underutilized. I painfully remember the very first animation meeting for the show and the animation director told us that the mandate from the “creative” team (the higher ups, not the artists) in LA is that they wanted a “Family Guy” look to the animation. This was over Zoom but you could still “hear” the collective groan from the animation team. I remember that moment very clearly. Should have quit then but I rode it out… I regret not quitting. I also worked on Paradise PD, which was funny enough a much better experience! I can watch it without feeling horrible about my time on it. And I actually laugh from time to time. The management team was great and supportive and so were the creators! I never felt like I was killing myself on that show. They really appreciated the hard work the animation team put in and they let us know. Say what you will about PPD but they know their audience. They have no delusions of grandeur that the show will somehow be this great work of art. The humor is stupid and lowbrow and it’s proud of it. The characters exist to tell stupid dick and butt jokes. Not my cup of tea humor wise but it obviously has a fan base seeing as it has 4 seasons with no signs of stopping. So yeah, that’s my experience on Prince. I can happily say that I was ecstatic when I heard the show was not being renewed by HBO. Good fucking riddance.
I remember Olan Rogers when talking about the latest season of Final Space, how he had to really push the network/executives to allow more drama and “not funny” episodes (which explains the whiplash of tonal shifts in the middle of the latest season). I wish streaming/television adult animation would take notes from animated short films and realize that the medium of animation can tell amazing stories outside of comedy. Half of Love Death and Robots is horror and existential concepts. Also I just don’t understand who the prince is…for? There's something very weird and almost creepy about making fun of real actual children who have done nothing wrong (unless you're one of those schizos who thinks being born into royalty is already a sin worthy of mockery). Also, political shows like this and "our cartoon president" are the laziest form of satire you can make. Don't like someone? Make them into unlikeable cartoon character. It goes to show the creators are incapable of creating their own world and cast of characters.
Yeah, they literally did not create "characters." These aren't characters...they are real life human people, whose exact forms they copied and pasted. All they've come up with themselves is the dialogue. What these people say, while in the settings the human beings are currently already living in and speaking in.
@@sorryifoldcomment8596 Not exactly. A lot of the way characters act in this show are nothing like what the royals are like. This feels like a massive missed opportunity to do a Spitting Image and satirise a lot of the controversy the royal family have landed themselves in like the Oprah interview, Prince Andrew's shortcomings, etc. But no, we just get a bargain bin Family Guy.
Spitting image also does 1 minute sketches with the royals. They don’t do 22 minutes of just the royal family and they don’t target the children for the entire sketch like the promise of the show like the Prince.
Despite being on HBO Max, fox animation technically created and produced this show. This makes it yet another family guy clone, but disney finally put their foot down and passed it on to whoever would take it to avoid responsibility.
I believe the reason kids cartoons are more sophisticated than adult cartoons because, like anime, they appeal to a wide variety of audiences regardless of age. I think when a piece of media leans too much on a single demographic, whether it's youngsters or adults, the whole thing falls apart.
This show also feels extremely unethical because it spends its entire runtime making fun of a real life 8 year old. Like this is borderline child abuse and the wrong doers are adults with a million dollar budget picking on a literal child. IRL kids cry when someone cyberbullies them with a mean email, I can't image how a kid must feel if an entire animated show is making fun of them and their family. It's one thing to make caricatures of adults in the royal family (although even then there's a big difference between thoughtful satire and jokes that are mean just for the sake it), but Prince George didn't even do anything wrong except for being born. It's not his fault he was born into this family and I've seen way too many kids get their lives messed up because the public couldn't be decent humans beings and just treat famous kids with the kindness they inherently deserve to be treated with. Disney stars get messed up when people make fun of them as teenagers, how do you think Prince George is going to fare when he's 8 and people are already making fun of him for no reason?
@@sungexpression9093 Do you think a kid could fully comprehend that to such an extent as to be completely unaffected? If so I pity your understanding of human emotion and development.

This whole thing seems like that part of joker when murray says "alright im waiting for the punchline" but just until that part, as if it never shows what happens after.
A thing I’ve noticed in animation is that kids animated shows often have far better Comedy than adult ones. I think the reason for this is because while adult shows can just throw a few slurs about and call it a day. Kids shows don’t have that option and actually have to think about what their going to spit at us.
Adult animated sitcoms these days only have "ambition" in the sense that they're aping the same basic formula for other highly successful shows like Family Guy where they try to make it as quirky and offbeat as possible without actually understanding a single thing about that show aside from "Peter make dark joke so funny"
Big mouth marked the end of an era: when mature animation became bland and diluted. When your only options for format were family guy or big mouth. Mature animation became just sex jokes and unnecessary gore. What ever happened to being bizarre, wild, radical, out of the ordinary or exceeding expectations? Whenever I hear the words "adult cartoon" now, I just picture big mouth in my head.
it feels like the show was a generic family gut clone given a royal family skin at the end of the writing process before any more specific jokes be added.
This is why people need to understand that adult animation isn't just sex jokes, toilet humor, and vulgarity. There's some good adult animations out there that don't rely on the three tropes to be appealing towards its audience.
I feel like the good adult comedies are aiming to relate the the actual struggles of adults but the bad ones just aim to relate to what children think adults are like when behind closed doors

But as time goes on, I realize that I'm not just following the dream because I want to, but because I have to. Since the entertainment industry (especially adult animation) has stagnated or has began to stagnate, the quality of animated cartoons are going down drastically. If the animation industry keeps going at the current rate it's going through, then it'll either become irrelevant or die out which are both outcomes many people would not like. I think at this point, I'm gonna have to be the one to create an animated series that'll both challenge what people think of adult animation and be it's own original series with little to no influence from other adult animations like the Simpsons or Family Guy. Hopefully I should be able to get a job in the animation industry after graduating from college. Wish me luck.

I’ve already have a few that I’ve been working on since I was little, I want it to be independent so I don’t have to worry about companies taking over and changing things. But at the same time, I am always doubting myself about what if ppl don’t like it. The shows I’m creating are not going to be comedies considering there’s too many comedies in adult animation and I want them to be an actual adult show that tackles real life subjects, have relatable characters, and whatnot. I’m going to college soon to learn how to be an animator, so hopefully in the future, I can own my own inde animation studio to make it happen.
I'm gonna be honest, this show feels really disgusting. Mocking the Royal family is mostly fine, but mocking the kids? They haven't done anything yet, and they didn't ask to be born into the public eye. It feels so gross to misuse their names and image like this. Imagine growing up to learn that a show like this was made about you when you were eight years old, and some grown ass adults decided that they needed to make a mockery of you while you were still learning to read. Disgusting.
I would say that the Castlevania Netflix show is one of the few adult animated shows that is not a comedy. It takes itself seriously but still has some humor in it.
Modern Family Guy, but its the royal family. Also i have no problem with parody of public figures, but some of these kids are EIGHT AND YOUNGER. That will haunt them for the rest of their lives for stuff they had no control over just because the writers were too lazy to think of any other concept for Hulu's next adult show
Having an adult animated series mocking the Royal Family would have been a good idea: - In the 90's - with a more nihilistic approach...including in the art style - made by people from the Commonwealth...or at least by people who have genuinely something to say about the Royal Family...or by using the Royal Family...I mean Alan Moore is English and had something to say when he put Nixon and Kissinger in Watchmen.
3:38 Oh my god... that animation... His animations are visible on a loop... Like they took a placeholder and just copy and pasted... I haven't even finished watching this video and I'm appalled at how this was allowed into the final product...
I feel like the genre of "adult animation" is really just wasted potential. Here is a great opportunity to create cartoons with potentially more complex and adult themes and stories. Yet nearly 90% of the time, all they manage to come up with is mindless nonsense with ironically quite juvenile and childish humor.
I generally feel like the people who come up with these type of shows think hey wouldn't it'd be funny if a cartoon character was swearing and did naughty things? Just press the make cartoon button and it's a smash it!!!
To have that, you actually have to see the character doing something normal for what they do. If you make them based around swearing and ill acts, then there's nothing to laugh at

Agreed, even if a lot of animated adult comedies can be really good.
You could watch anime.

@@joshlanfrank what is that picture of? 😅
So that's why the premise was interesting and there was this sorta gem inside of the mud feeling throughout the whole film but it still sucked

Peter: You think THAT’S bad? Remember that Royal Family cutaway that took up 12 episodes?

Every "adult cartoon" nowadays looks the same...

This whole thing seems like that part of joker when murray says "alright im waiting for the punchline" but just until that part, as if it never shows what happens after.
A thing I’ve noticed in animation is that kids animated shows often have far better Comedy than adult ones.
I think the reason for this is because while adult shows can just throw a few slurs about and call it a day. Kids shows don’t have that option and actually have to think about what their going to spit at us.

It's always fun betting on who will get their review out on stuff like this first, Saberspark's lagging behind this time.
“I don’t see the appeal of a show where everyone is an a**hole 24/7.”
Welcome to Family Guy.
The jokes about Prince Phillip seem in poor taste now that he's dead. And he died before the premiere too, so it just seems awkward he's alive in the show.
Prince Philip was a bad person
This is a combination of Family Guy, Allen Gregory, and a dash of a South Park British parody.
But some how all the comedy is squeezed out.
Yet, ANOTHER example of how Early 2000s humor just doesn't blend well with Modern Audiences.
Hell, even early 2000s adult cartoons were funnier than this.
Aqua teen hunger force
Clerks animated
Harvey birdman attorney at law.
The problem isn't the early 2000s type of humor
The problem with the humor is the family guy schtick done to death
If there was another adult cartoon with clerks animated style of humor I would watch the crap out of that
@@goldylover1000
I meant those from the Comedy movies where 99% of the jokes are about farting, swearing, lowkey Homophobia/Transphobia, etc.
@@giantpinkcat i agree
But then again clerks animated was witty in its writing which this show is not going for.
I await for more smart humor adult cartoons besides close enough and most of rick and morty (some episodes suck though. But season 5 despite 1 episode is better than seasons 3 and 4.)
@@giantpinkcat 😂 The show is literally created by a gay guy, why do you assume just because a gay character is badly written it's Homophobic???

They made George a little queen, which pretty much reinforces Gay stereotypes we've had since before I was conceived, and cancels out the diversity points for the gay couple in the show. Like I once said:
Masculine Gay Men exist.
When I was young, I've have a dream of making my own cartoon series since I enjoy the cartoons that I watch everyday and I want to do the same thing as well.
Same here, I’ve always wanted to make my own adult animated shows.
Good luck to you both.
Props to you, good luck!
Good luck, both of you. Revolutionising an industry probably isn't easy, but it's impossible without someone willing to try; wish you the best!
This series sounds like the end result of Family Guy's popularity.
I can’t even imagine sitting through that whole thing, I could barely get through the first episode.
Modern Family Guy, but its the royal family.
Also i have no problem with parody of public figures, but some of these kids are EIGHT AND YOUNGER. That will haunt them for the rest of their lives for stuff they had no control over just because the writers were too lazy to think of any other concept for Hulu's next adult show
0:28 BRUH i though the queen was talking
Same
Having an adult animated series mocking the Royal Family would have been a good idea:
- In the 90's
- with a more nihilistic approach...including in the art style
- made by people from the Commonwealth...or at least by people who have genuinely something to say about the Royal Family...or by using the Royal Family...I mean Alan Moore is English and had something to say when he put Nixon and Kissinger in Watchmen.
This show just looks like a family guy ripoff and looks very bad.
But its British and HBO
@its fine ua-cam.com/video/q9_Mc-Jb2vc/v-deo.html
Audibly screamed “what the fuck?!” hearing George’s voice.
What would that sound like
This was the first animated show I felt bored watching, the humor was basically f-bombs and other childish stuff
Same and i like adult comedy
3:38 Oh my god... that animation...
His animations are visible on a loop... Like they took a placeholder and just copy and pasted...
I haven't even finished watching this video and I'm appalled at how this was allowed into the final product...
I feel like the genre of "adult animation" is really just wasted potential. Here is a great opportunity to create cartoons with potentially more complex and adult themes and stories. Yet nearly 90% of the time, all they manage to come up with is mindless nonsense with ironically quite juvenile and childish humor.
I refuse to believe Bojack Horseman didn't make you laugh once
I get the strange feeling he only watched season 1 or something
I generally feel like the people who come up with these type of shows think hey wouldn't it'd be funny if a cartoon character was swearing and did naughty things? Just press the make cartoon button and it's a smash it!!!
To have that, you actually have to see the character doing something normal for what they do. If you make them based around swearing and ill acts, then there's nothing to laugh at
This show made me realize George is 8 years old now, it feels like yesterday when he was born.
And don’t forget about that baby who was born on the same day as Skyrim release in 2011
It sooo does.
I gotta say, it's really sad that every time a new adult show is announced, it's usually just another modern family guy... over and over again...
I feel so bad :( I’m an animation major in college and one of my friends was actually a PA for this show. Preeeetty rough. Usually I love supporting my friends but sheesh this was rough. Anyways, an unexpectedly great piece of adult animation was Q-force! Genuinely really funny.
The trailer really didn’t do Q-force justice, I was very surprised when it was actually good.
@@CometCereal I knowww! My friends and I are all in animation and like even we had very low expectations. Now I’m praying that there’s a season 2 😭
