There is this (somewhat) new channel on UA-cam called “Cikin Nuggit”, it has adorable animal characters, funny jokes, and wholesome moments, you have Chikin Nuggit, the dog, Cheezbourger, the cat, Iscream, the bunny (that is simultaneously a demon/biblically accurate angel), Fwench Fwy, the wish dragon, and Slushi, the arctic fox. I love this series and I recommend that you watch, and maybe, review it
My biggest issue with adult animation is too much of a focus on the "Adult" aspects. Alot of shows have sex, drugs, alcohol, and cursing but that's 90% of the substance. And though many adult shows are like that, animated ones feel like they get the worst of it do to animation being a great medium to make characters larger than life so bad characters and storys get elevated to a whole new level. Big adult shows like Smiling Friends, South Park, Simpsons, Family Guy (at least older seasons), King of the Hill, ect have adult content but they make sure it isn't what carries the show and has other features and qualities that make them feel very distinct from each other.
That's something I loved in KoTH as I got older: Subtetly. I think dark and edgy moments are much more impactful if there's a hint of subtlety. It feels a bit more real that way. I'm tired of adult animations having zero subtlety and using screaming, swearing, and crying as a punchline. It's, ironically, immature as fuck.
And don't forget to add Gore and laughing at the people who are agonizing Pain is part of that Comedy adult. Never understand why every Adult cartoon has to bring Gore to make it funny. It makes it disturbing.
It kind of shows how far ahead WB/HBO+ is ahead of Paramount in adult animation is that they have shows like Close Enough, which is a wacky comedy show where the entire premise is dealing with adulthood being different than what people expected but doesn't lose its humor. And they're also the home of Tuca a Bertie, which revels in all the hedonism of it all but still has characters and heart.
at the very least, adult swim lets their creators be weird. shorts like opal are unlike anything i've seen and their shows have an identity. with comedy central, they're all pretty much the same show. i wouldn't be surprised if this lasted like 13 episodes at the most
YES!!! Speaking of, I’m so fucking pumped for Uzumaki. I’m actually gonna host a watch party for that shit. Edit: I recently watched the Junji Ito review by Hunter on papameat and I really think adult swim has artistic integrity. Cartoon Network is very similar. They’ve seen long term the benefits of having shows that last through the decades. That’s true art. It’s an investment that pays out in the end. Fuck, I still remember the oldies like Boondocks, Tim and Eric, Robot Chicken, and many many shows that have been on adult swim at one point or another, family guy, South Park, american dad, the works! There’s a lot of hit and misses, misses aplenty. But they aren’t insane like these other platforms, literally, they hit the same ball expecting a different outcome. At least Adult Swim has misses but they’re all DIFFERENT for the most part.
Old Comedy central used to be wild and have some great adult cartoons and shows new comedy central is terrbile they even had a cartoon that pushed it to where south park couldn't even match it
When I tell people I’m majoring in animation, their first question is, “ Like, for kids?” And I say, “Not particularly.” And then they say, “Oh, so like, Family Guy?” I really wish people could expand their views of what animation can do. Hopefully we’ll see more well made projects that go towards changing that.
@@PeterGriffin11 Seriously. The top 4-6 replies to the comments are all spam. And they all look the exact same. How is UA-cam not able to detect this and ban all of these accounts?
@@cadekachelmeier7251 Hey, UA-cam used all of their budget they normally allocate to spam detection towards removing the dislike counter. Give Susan and Co. a break! They can only help UA-cam so much each year.
The saddest part of all of this: I’ll bet Fairview got 10 times the Budget that Smiling Friends did, yet it has NOTHING to offer! According to Zach Hadel, the co creator of Smiling Friends, the entire show had the budget of a single Family Guy episode! Yet the entire season was a joy to watch! It was funny, charming, had some actual hidden meaning, and it was more creative because of the budgetary limitations!
I never had to sneak watching Adult Swim, I’d just wake up in the middle of the night to the fever dream that was Aqua Teen Hunger Force. 😰 I was slightly traumatized by a lot of the stuff on AS but now love it dearly.
i find it ironic how a common gotcha against critiquing childrens cartoons is "its just for kids, why are you asking for so much, its not that deep" when the adult cartoons serve us literal dirt. i dont think its unrealistic to expect the bare minimum of respect for the audience, regardless of age.
I don't get why they say that. Kids deserve quality, well written shows and movies. If they keep watching cheap, mediocre content, then they will grow up thinking cartoons are just for kids. That is what happened with people that grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
What this industry and producers desperately need to understand is that animation literally does not solely exist for either children or mature audiences. Animation is a method of storytelling so why does the industry refuse to tell stories NOT explicitly for children or adults? And when it is for adults, why is it made absolutely necessary that the show is comedic in nature? I've seen more shows lately that don't adhere to these "rules" but the industry has had this problem for decades.
And let's he real, these rich fools would straight up die without rural people. These rich idiots and their spoiled little brats seem to think that food is made at the supermarket or something. If they ever had to try and figure out feeding themselves off the land, they'd probably starve.
Comedy Central’s golden goose is obviously South Park and they’ll do anything to achieve the same thing as it. Fortunately for Trey and Matt, they’re actually good at writing
same man who made the hit "hey stop disliking my video" and "ARROW TO THE KNEE" finally getting the fame and fortune that's been withheld from them for so long
Zach Hadel is an incredible person and the fact that he’s also working with another guy who I love Micheal Cusack (who made YOLO CRYSTAL FANTASY) for such an incredible show is nothing short of a dream
One thing I do remember: Beef got himself vaccinated -- against his mother's wishes -- because his friend was immunocompromised. So Beef got vaccinated in order to reduce the risk of getting his friend sick, who it would be fatal for. I watched the episode once, myself. The only thing that really stuck out is how often the characters called themselves, or what they were doing, stupid. Not like in the typical way where someone calls another such after doing something dumb either. No, instead, they will openly call themselves stupid, or idiots, outright, before even doing anything.
Yup. They're definitely trying to make an obvious political message. Not even a devil's advocate, just outright calling people stupid for what they do. They're not even characters, just a fill in for what type of people they think are stupid.
Also that ain't how it works. Maybe they will become non contagious faster, but they will still get other people sick, an now they willn't know because *they have a bigger chance to be asymptomatic* . I hope that the writers are knowledgeable enough to realize that, and maybe the friend died from the disease or something.
The Fairview art style feels like they wanted to make a show with a similar feeling to South Park but didn't understand why the South Park art style and animation was charming
It actually kinda reminds me of a blown up version of Prison Architect or Rimworld, but again without understanding how to make such animation charming. Given the number of edgelords in both those games communities, it would not surprise me if the creators played one of them.
I think what really ticks me off about the character designs is that they feel like NFTs. I don’t even think there are any Fairview NFTs, but the character designs feel like they were make with a cheap character creator, in fact they’re almost uncannily similar to the Snapchat avatars. Now that I think about it, IMO these people have accidentally created the current worst character designs in the history of animation. They have no silhouette, there’s no interesting use of color, there’s both no style and a stylistic clash at the same time, and there’s very little character to them at all. This is a prime example of why people who aren’t interested in animation shouldn’t be making cartoons, this looks and feels like a cheap live-action show except with none of the benefits of live-action and none of the benefits of animation, it’s a remarkably unremarkable abomination of entertainment.
When I first saw images from this show my first thought was "I could literally whip these characters up in five minutes in the Bitmoji app." For some context I'm clinically dysgraphic: I'm so bad at drawing that it actually counts as a disease. There's a reason why my main artistic medium as far as the visual arts go is photography. I SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PERFECTLY REPLICATE THE LOOK OF A PROFESSIONALLY ANIMATED PRODUCTION BY A MAJOR STUDIO.
@@sluttyMapleSyrup I’d argue even the infamous Xbox Avatars and the wildly unnecessary Sportsmates are slightly better character designs. At least their designs are consistent and have a smidgen of a style; it’s the bare minimum, but it’s still a millimeter away from the bottom of the barrel.
I love how the success of Smiling Friends could be seen coming from miles away. Listening to Zach occasionally talk about animation in Oneyplays and SleepyCast, he really has an in-depth understanding of what makes a cartoon enjoyable and timeless. Not to mention his sense of humor is absurdly unique.
kind of ironic how the whole "animation doesn't have to be good, it's for kids!" sentiment is when you realize lots of kids animation has WAY more effort and genuinely good stories/characters in comparison to adult animation.
Except stuff like Arcane alone blows the entirely of "kids shows" out of the water, in terms of being competent in how it handles it's maturity and complexity. Same with shows like Bojack and Primal
@@Stew91 Oh, you mean adult animations that are actually written with maturity are more nuisanced and complex than kids shows, wow, it’s almost like that should be the norm rather than a surprise.
@@marakrofitcac3425 "It's almost like that should be the norm rather than s surprise". Adults shows like Smiling Friends, Tuca and Bertle, Arcane, Bojack, Primal, Castlevania the series, Inside Job, Invincivble, Centuar World, etc, exist. WOW; it's almost like people pay attention to the bad shows and then wonder why they can't find any good adult animation. Funny how that works.
Shows like Smiling Friends prove that modern adult animation doesn't even need to be as emotionally complex as Bojack or have more mature subject matter like Invincible to be good. It just has to be visually appealing, and written competently. If you can nail those two things, you're pretty much halfway there. I mean, hell, the animation in Aqua Teen Hunger Force is admittedly.... hard to look at sometimes... but it remains one of my favorite AA shows because of the brilliant writing and acting. And even then, as ugly as it was, at least it had STYLE. I'm tired of these lazy networks and studios getting lazy and thinking "if we make the cartoon say 'fuck', we'll cum money". Though, Smiling Friends gives me hope that we'll see another rise of creator-driven shows with minimal network interference in the coming years.
I'd also add SuperJail! and Xavier Renegade Angel to your list of shows that show that adult animation doesn't have to be complex to be good. The former basically exists as an excuse to set up intricately choreographed sequences of cartoon violence that amount to Tom and Jerry meet the Grand Guignol, the latter is basically what would happen if an improv troupe comprised entirely of philosophy majors dropped acid and decided to make a movie in Second Life, but both are absolutely genius pieces of writing and animation. We could almost think of shows like Smiling Friends, SuperJail!, And XRA as smart comedy in disguise as dumb comedy made by smart people, with shows like Fairview, Santa Claus Inc, and Washingtonia being dumb comedy made by dumb people who think they're making smart comedy. There are few things more grating on this earth than an idiot who thinks they're a genius.
Archer started out as just a Spy Agency office comedy. Sounds about as derivative as you can get but the excellent voice cast and writing led to it being a critical and commercial success. The same can be said for why American Dad succeeded and The Cleveland Show failed.
@@Paratet 100% this. Family Guy, American Dad, and Cleveland Show all have the exact same animation style but the reason why American Dad still holds up to this day is because of the writing. It's a _genuinely_ funny show.
I love whenever Saber gets heated over this bs, because he basically embodies our collective anger/hatred over this kind of bs. I'm SO GLAD that we're slowly getting more good/great adult animations, but man do I cringe at the release of the really bad ones.
@Quark i mean, unless if you're talking about it being an indoctrinated method to control people, then yes. i hope you weren't generalizing that all religion is bad though, but listen, this is all absolutely irrelevant.
I feel like adult animation has been like this since Family Guy, but we forget about the bad ones. However, I too forgot about the bad ones, except Slacker Cats
Never underestimate how dumb studio execs are, the animation makes chargeman Ken look like it was a labour of love, rather than a labour of how a psychotic 10 year old is allowed to get away with mass murder.
Also, I suspect most TV execs nowadays kind of keep up the mentality from the heyday of the Big Three pre-cable, with the idea that, "if we show it, we can convince people that's it's worth watching, no matter how much or little quality it has."
The animators who worked on Chargeman Ken have an excuse to make the show purposely bad so they can go on the vacation. Well, that's a shame. That show really deserve a reboot.
Fairview is exactly the kind of show Zach Hadel (co-creator of Smiling Friends) was talking about on a podcast recently when he brought up how most adult animated shows don't really care about the 'animated' part of being an animated show and would rather just focus on being crass and tasteless. For me personally I took one look at Fairview and it is literally the most unappealing art style for a cartoon I've ever seen.
Colorado fun fact: "South Park" is just a colloquial name used by locals to describe a smallish valley region in the rockies. The official name of the main town up there is _Fairplay._ There's also a little, seemingly-unincorporated town somewhere in the mountains called Fairview. No idea if they're related, but considering the "animation" style...
*looks like a shitty mobile game, yea, I agree constant no-effort "games" with literally zero life purpose but to make people grind for days or force their money out to keep itself alive, talking here about mobile games you consistently see on crappy mobile ads while I agree that there are gems out there like king of thieves or jetpack joyride, there's a decent chunk of people in all industries just going "for all the gains with fewest effort put in", and it's pretty worrying to be honest that their "creations" are ever relevant out there
"Our characters will not have legs, and this is TOTALLY a stylistic choice. It has NOTHING to do with the fact that it will give us even less that we have to animate hahaha"
If this hasn’t been done already, i would love to see Saber’s opinion on F is for Family. I love the show because it’s a reflection of the creator’s own childhood in the 70’s, and calls out the culture from that time. At times it’s difficult for me to remember that it’s set in that time period because a lot of the issues are still prevalent today. The characters are engaging and very well written, and the ending of the series was beautifully done, so you can see each character’s actual growth. Sometimes i do think it relies a bit too much on shock factor, but they balance that out with a good story i actually wanted to learn about.
I’d argue the general lack of an accepted middle ground for animation in the US is part of the issue. It feels like a majority of general audiences view animation as purely G-rated, or essentially R-rated, and nothing else. This seems to push “adult animation” to really lean into extremes, but without the skill of execution to do it well.
All you gotta do to make jack r rated is change he robot oil and alien goo red and the true brutality of jack is insane. Which the final season did beautifully with his first human kill being hi-lighted by the vibrant red of the girls blood. No fountain of blood no guts just a smear of crimson and his honor as a human sinks further into oblivion. But this was only possible because a skilled creator cared and put in the effort which is like saying to win a foot race you need to run faster then the other guys. Easier said than done
Weirdly enough, it's Disney that seems to come closest to finding that middle ground. Stuff like Gravity Falls or Owl House aren't afraid to throw in mature or scary themes.
Part of the issue with so many of these failed adult cartoons is that a lot of them see the medium as a business venture instead of a creative expression. A lot of the creators and producers for these shows don’t really care about animation. They just see it as something that could make the network tons of money as long as they check the right boxes Creators like JG Quintel and Vivziepop actually had a passion for the art form, which is why their shows have become very successful and people see them as some of the best cartoonists of our time. Same thing with Seth MacFarlane. Regardless of how you feel about him, he put real passion into his craft and worked very hard to make his shows look great and funny. With so many of these shows, there’s clearly no hard work that was put into them. They think if they keep modeling themselves after Family Guy, they’re bound to score a hit, without really understanding what made Family Guy big to start with TLDR; If you want a successful adult cartoon, try to create one through the lens of an artist, not a business owner EDIT: Based on some of the replies, I’m gonna clarify myself I do think business is an important aspect to creating a successful show. Good funding and good marketing are what help make your entertainment a hit. I think what I was trying to get at with this comment is that you should put the artistic aspect first and the business aspect second
The problem with "adult animation" is that it's not meant for adults. It's animated and written for teenagers who want to feel older than they actually are.
I find it silly how Nina Diaz stated that the shows in reference had "politics at the center of it all" as if it were a positive thing. I firmly believe that politics in a cartoon are automatically a con unless you can play off of it extraordinarily well like South Park did in its earlier seasons.
IMO politics is best handled the more abstracted it gets from the real world. There's a reason why the more political episodes of shows like Star Trek TOS or The Twilight Zone still hold up: when you abstract it away from Party X versus Party Y and get more into the philosophical meat of it all you touch on more universal truths and questions that people can actually talk about without going for each others' throats.
@@tjenadonn6158 agreed, the more metaphors used to convey the message the better. head on tackling politics very rarely works out, and obscuring it with different names and characters, and using the same conflict in a different backdrop tends to do much better.
I'm glad you mentioned King of the Hill, because one of the best aspects of that show is how none of the characters, especially Hank, are right or wrong in every situation. They all learn from each other in their different moments. Unlike most shows, live-action or animated, there's not just one major "voice of reason" character.
I saw a post somewhere that “King of the hill is the closest thing we have to an American slice of life anime” and I love the show even more than before lol
@@randeli7785 The Japanese honestly who aren't traditionally trapped are kind of envious of Americans. KOTH to them is basically the kind of life many want.
Y'know it really pisses me off that "adult animation" in the west has been locked into this genre of crass idiocy. I just want to see some actual deep, mature storytelling...And yet ironically, the only place to find that outside anime is a handful of _children's shows_ like Avatar. I want to see an American show with a mature story that doesn't have to hold back with how harsh it can be, give me something like a Gundam-style story of war and politics, "adult" doesn't mean dick and fart jokes.
The fact that the Viacom executive made sure to mention that "politics are at the center of it all" is very telling. I HATE shows that focus more on a political message than anything else. People are attracted to shows and movies that tell compelling stories and have characters with empathetic drives and character traits. Even every Southpark episode has a funny story, while having a few political jabs every now and then. Politics is just a hot button issue right now and they know it will get watches from people who agree with their views and are easily manipulated.
I'm pretty positive that the only reason why the characters have no legs is cause it's easier to animate the characters moving up and down for "movenment" rather than having legs walk and run like regular people. It's a cost cutting strat only and it's another example of how this show was cheaply made.
VeggieTales used the same strategy, but 1. They were created when CGI was in its infancy and thus had very limited resources, 2. They were smart enough to justify it in-show through the premise, and 3. It holds up on its own in other areas.
It's still kinda jarring how they went for that "Facebook avatar" style, and literally gave up on the legs. Looks unnatural, even in-universe. I'm almost sure they wanted to make the animation look shitty and crude only because South Park does it, not because of budget reasons, because I bet a single episode of this garbage show probably has more budget than any amateur internet animation project of the last decade. Either way, I can appreciate superb animation tied to a bad story the same way I can appreciate a great story told with limited animation. This show has neither. It sucks at every possible aspect. Even the audio mixing sucks.
@@paulitastic2460 that's the excuse they'll use for cutting costs. amazon workers were still considered essential so there's no reason they couldn't have had better mics delivered
Watching Fairview is pretty much like having an executive from Comedy Central and an executive from Viacom take turn beating me in the head with pillowcases filled with doorknobs and old D-cell batteries.
The art style looks like they took that old character generator that people used for Facebook profiles in the 2010s but they were too lazy to animate legs so they removed them.
Between this and Stephen Colbert suddenly making his own NFTs, I feel like every little ounce of respect I’ve developed for him over the years has gone down the drain in just one week
You know, I'd never thought about people thinking "animation" was a genre instead of a medium, but it also explains everyone who walks into a bookstore and says "it had a blue cover"...
With shows like Primal, Invincible, and Arcane, I'd be on board for more adult cartoons that aren't comedies. We've already got dozens upon dozens of those.
I know this isn’t a Cartoon but, Aggretsuko is another example of a good adult show that the first season was more comedy focused but as it went delved into interesting topics in season 2 and 3. While season 4 had some questionable decisions mostly revolving around the “boy blunder” Haida. The fleshing out of Ton was handled incredibly well (Fenneko).
Invader Zim is a great example of what you can do with that concept, you have a town full of idiots with two people, Dib and, Gaz being the ones who are aware of whats happening. Dib is trying to stop the main antagonist Zim who isn't a antagonist really. this results on someone who is both smart and stupid and is great for the show to keep a conflict going. Gaz doesn't care much and is great to help with side episodes. Anyways its fairview but better and its a kids show.
TBF Zim also has a bunch of other things going for it from its high concept to its incredibly distinct visual style. What's the point of doing animation if you're just going to do Parks and Rec but Bitmoji?
Zim is the protagonist. Dib is the antagonist. A protagonist doesn't necessarily mean "good guy", it just means the main character(s) and anyone who's on their side. An antagonist is just an opposer of the protagonist(s).
I feel like it’s the fact that the writers of South Park understand and have a certain amount of respect for small town America. They don’t see it as backwards and in need of drastic alteration culturally. A lot of these other shows come from people with biases against rural and small town America and that’s why (I think, personally) they’re not as funny. Because there’s hatred there. It’s about mocking instead of poking fun of, and I think there’s a difference
This really strikes true for me honestly. It just feels disingenuous, like the majority of these big media company execs have never even set foot in any town like Fairview and they can't possibly imagine the people living there as people, more just like props in a rudimentary/backwards society they can make fun of. Yeah you can joke at people's expense, (as much as there is charming in a small town, there's just as much to hate) but it has to come with a certain amount of respect or understanding (like with the south park writers) otherwise it's just critical and unfunny because it's clear they're just relying on biases or stereotypes.
One of the things I love about animation is that it’s a medium to show stories in ways that live footage just can’t. You have the ability to stretch characters and settings and make them as outlandish as you like. You aren’t bound by what is or isn’t physically possible. So *why* would you animate ball people with arms? They’re so stiff and boring, and the writing doesn’t even make up for it. South Park has reasons behind its style, and the writing makes the art work despite it being simplistic. But making a show with essentially hopping egg people who have nothing of value to offer? Adult animation has had this issue for ages, but it’s so obvious with these legless bitmojis. It just raises the question of *why*? Throwing bland characters at a wall doesn’t keep an audience. You think they would learn by now that there is an audience for this, and they can’t be bought with cheaply made family guy clones.
To me. It pisses me off how much the Western Animation industry doesn't try to compete for quality animation. It sticks with this overly simplistic, gross, simple aesthic, while. It's Japanese contemporaries are starting to get more and more adult, hell more than half of anime is more mature that isn't just " HEY WE MADE A NSFW, 18+ ". These Western Animated shows play it too safe and copy eachother, meanwhile. Japan has Uzaki-Chan wants to hang out, Kill la kill ( the themes of it ), Ishuzoku Reviewers which is for an adult audiance that is genuinely funny with great writing and being a bit of a sitcom, Panty and Stocking ( a parody of western cartoon shows of the early 2000's ), and even earlier titles like Gundam and Macross Saga.... Western animation needs to stop hiring diversity hires, learn to make good comics to help fund their cartoons, and MAKE IT CREATOR OWNED. If copied the JP industry, but actually be pretty good or decent while Marvel shit and DC shit is tanking, it would make some money. Japan when not making purely NSFW, can make some amazing or interesting adult animation. Japan doesn't even opt for cheap simplistic designs on average. Hell there was that one adult show that was made by the same people who made Hello Kitty, made Aggretsuko. That show was pretty good. I hate how the West is so behind in embracing animation, without using it as a cheap CGI landscape or over-digitalized marvel character. It looks gross to me and kind of uncanny if you do artwork of any kind. Japan is willing to experiment, AMERICA ISN'T. Japan has been the best user of... 2D Animation, America is focused only on 3D due to recyclability, and over dependence on reboots or clones. Like how we got an American Dad and Family Guy, despite American dad was supposed to fill that void of Family Guy.
I agree. The best animation borders realism but stretches into absurdity. The same is true for live action I think, but it stays a little more grounded. That's why I enjoyed Community.
@@MaoRatto personally I still prefer western animation (European and american). I still find american to be more appealing and experimental in terms of artstyles since simplistic and detailed can appear in western shows in different cartoons. Think "Smiling Friends" vs. "She-ra: Princesses of power." Maybe even think of Hilda vs. Kipo. also the only thing stopping shows from being creator-driven are executives. I have heard this from multiple professional animators and character designers. They hire the right artists but they don't hire the right executives.
Adult shows often tend to forget the fundamentals of writing. Consistency, character and plot. It's always naughty words, shock humor and "and then the opposite happens" comedy. When great adult comedies like Rick and Morty or South Park thrive under their episodic formula while keeping their plots and characters straight.
Except Rick and Morty relies way too much on swear words and shock humour to the point where it feels more like it's for edgy teenagers rather than for grown adults
Honestly shows like Fairview reveal a LOT about what people like paramount execs think of its audience - that we're all just a bunch of stupid stoners that will laugh and clap our hands when we see some shitty characters curse and fart Considering the success of Family Guy and the Simpsons in 2022, they're not too far off.
It’s crazy how Fairview is being marketed as a show that’s as good as South Park when it literally took everything that makes South Park good and did the opposite
I wonder if there’s gonna be a show viewed alongside South Park and Fairview, that’s the exact midpoint between the former’s greatness, and the latter’s sh*tiness.
I think the biggest shot to the foot in their formula is "politics at the centre of it all". South Park is not about politics. It's about all of society, the characters and their reaction to the world around them. Politics plays a notable role, but if politics was at the centre of South Park, then why would they not make the 21st-24th seasons all about Donald Trump? Also, geez - Stephen Colbert has definitely become his own worst enemy.
While you are mostly correct, seasons 20 and 24 were very politically-heavy seasons. Season 25 (barring the first episode) seemed like a nice return-to-form for South Park
Right remember Hazbin Hotel? They should have greenlit that and put it on streaming and never change a thing. It was really good. Put Helluva Boss on too.
There are probably some good, even great, artists who are desperate for work in their field so took a job making some of the ugliest art you’ll ever see on shit like this
I took a documentary film class once. One thing I remember the professor saying was that sound is far more important than people realize. Your video can be grainy or oddly lit, but that can be forgiven in some cases. But poor sound will completely destroy you film every time.
There's a reason why one of David Lynch's longest standing professional relationships was with Alan Splett, the Oscar winning sound designer behind the auditory landscapes of Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, and Blue Velvet along with Lynch's student film The Grandmother. Sound is the difference between the audience getting lost in your world and you losing the audience.
"Stephen Colbert, you're better than this!" No, he's not. He's a glorified delivery man, except instead of packages and goods, he delivers lines from the writers to his audience. He'll give you a box with an awkward wink and a smile, but don't mistake him for the actual person who made it. Also for the show's characters, it feels like they went, "What's something that'll make us feel relatable? All the young adults use Snapchat, correct? Bingo! We'll make them look like those cartoon images!" I'm so sick of NPCs being in control of creative processes.
Neoliberal talking points do not make you more adult. This is why *The Goode Family* only ran a year: most people like that are fucking toxic in real life and would be the types to subject Gay kids to eugenics and call that acceptance.
@@SuperFitzieZX dont say that :( theres a old guy in my hometown that works as a librarian and does standup from time to time, and its genuinely very enjoyable
Smiling friends an actual good adult cartoon we got for along time. The chaotic mixed media of animation is something you don't see on Adult cartoons that isn't a Family Guy or Rick and Morty clone.
They try not to be cynical like those shows. Too many adult animated shows just become cynical and Zach and Michael wanted to point the lens at that type of thing and satirize it. I
This premise would actually be really good if the writers were talented enough to make it funny. Lots of people have no idea how big city politics fuck with random small towns, there's a lot of good humour that would take the right people to find it
These are the people who were stroking their chins to "What's the Matter with Kansas?" fifteen years ago, and haven't evolved in their views since then, or lost their supercilious attitudes. Of course, these are the same people wondering why crime is so much worse and why their groceries cost twice as much, and haven't connected it to the way they vote.
I want to point out that just THIS YEAR I got back into watching Thomas the Tank Engine. Legit, not even kidding. After coming back to the series from my childhood years of watching it I can say it's MILES better than anyone gives it credit for. In fact it can beat out ANY of these adult animated shows they spit out every year by MILES. The themes of the show can get dark, depressing and down right intense at times. There are episodes that rattled me to my core. One of them being The Flying Kipper. People think Thomas is goody goody kids stuff but if you go back and watch the old model series it wasn't MEANT for only kids. It could get down right dismal at times. I suggest going back and watching original Thomas over ANY of this crap they squirt out each year.
TtTE was disturbing as hell, at least to my adult eyes. It's all about conformity and complete obedience. Anyone hint of independent thought is bitterly crushed (remember Henry?). The trains are all in constant fear of not working hard enough and being declared useless --- but there's also a strict pecking order and at one point Oliver actually _kills_ a freight car who annoys him (S.C. Ruffey). The Fat Controller covers it up...
Smiling friends is amazing because it's not only one of the few good adult animated shows, but also probably the first ever good TV series who's writing is heavely internet inspired
... I find TV should've been dead a god damn decade ago though. I find smiling friends will only age well as an animated streamed series, but as a TV series will age poorly.
@@MaoRatto They don't heavily rely on pop culture though. it'll age like fine wine because they're not commenting on the "Society of today" or anything topical really, just some really funny cutoff gags and jokes. There are a few instances there wehre they do but overall it's just great writing
@Coconut Boy I have to be honest I despise internet culture, but after watching some clips from Smiling Friends, it made me want to give it chance. I think I have to reminded that not everything from the internet sucks.
The creator of Smiling Friends said in an interview exactly your point about the people who are making adult animation-- people who don't care. It's seen as a lazy project (in their view, not a bad thing) to get paid and it's thrown around like it requires no real talent.
i think it's because much of the higher ups in entertainment, are the same people who see animation as 'for kids', so their idea of an 'adult cartoon' is what you see here. thats why that comedy central pr statement states the 'necessary' things in an adult cartoon like that because that is genuinely all they know. really violent, abhorrent humor, politics and a crude style because 'that's all adult animation is' there is a shocking amount of people in a powerful position in entertainment that genuinely have that ignorant understanding of animation.
"Dude you cant get a job by only drawing faces, you need to practise the whole body at the very least!" "Fuck you dude, ill make a show. You just wait!"
I was actually SURPRISED at how good and how deep Inside Job was (like the characters and their relationships). It wasn't what I expected--it was actually better.
I guess a large number of people still don't know that the earliest cartoons were primarily aimed towards an adult audience for a time; yeah it's a genre of entertainment, but it's still art and has value...it's moving drawings for fuck's sake.
Are you sure? From what Ive seen with a quick google search animation most closely related to what we see today has always been primarily aimed towards children, and the "golden age of animation" was spearheaded by Disney, Warner Bros., etc; I do think animation has value whether its for children or adults but it doesnt look like it, historically, was for adults
@@deedeedan8681 bimbos Initiation, swing you sinners, most classic looney tunes, the tex Avery cartoons, cartoons were never really aimed towards kids until I think the 60s when television was becoming a more popular medium
Just wanted to throw a quick thank you for Saber for his "Inside Job" recommendation from a previous video. I was totally going to pass it by because, as he said, many are going to think it's just a "Rick and Morty" clone. It was really good!
@Quark I'm an atheist, but, Jesus Christ, chill. Religion isn't inherently a bad thing. Sure, organized religion usually is a bit wonky, but individuals holding a specific belief is perfectly fine so long as they don't use those beliefs to justify hatred or crimes.
Animated shows like Fairview genuinely make me miss cartoons that were critically panned like 10 years ago. Like, I can look back on those and at least find SOMETHING nice to say about them, SOME little crumb of artistic merit to appreciate, but _this?_ It’s about as interesting/entertaining to watch as the buffer wheel on a video that won’t load. I almost want to binge Problem Solverz just to feel something again. (Excellent video as always btw, you broke everything down really well!)
Stellar breakdown SS, as always.. I just wanted to point out one small detail (cuz I ABSOLUTELY agree with your assessment of “Fairview”), and that is: “Home Movies”, despite being a truly *fantastic* show that was way ahead of its time, is not a super great choice to include in a list of shows that are meant to exemplify _”great writing.”_ (seeing as its most defining gimmick was: dialogue in which the voice actors were given a fu¢kton of freedom to ad-lib in their performances)
The amount of humor, emotional depth, and overall writing of Helluva Boss is OUTSTANDING for just a UA-cam channel, heck, even if it was on TV, I'd still be pleasantly surprised that good animation was being made for anyone above 10
Helluva boss is…okay. It still has that too much adult content on it like the swearing and stuff, which gets obnoxious especially the humor. I see it more pg-13 then for adults, too much humor I will hear from a teenager really. When Brandon Rodger is behind the scripting, it’s good, when Vizi is behind it, it’s bad. I see some good and bad elements of the show. Hazbin hotel is garbage… I am sorry to you fans, but it’s not my cup of tea. (Prepares for the butchering of people :D)
@@QueenMasumi I personally love Helluva Boss though I've only seen the pilot for Hazbin Hotel since I don't have any streaming services. I think it's perfectly fine to dislike something if it's not the kinda content you generally enjoy and yeah, I can see how the swearing can get old to people. Tbf though, I was raised pretty passively when it comes to that so I don't see much of an issue because I don't generally put any extra emphasis on what are, for the most part, just words to me. I do, however, try to respect those that don't like or aren't used to the fact that I'm actually more likely to swear in a good mood then bad
@@QueenMasumi i fully agree with on hazbin hotel being okay. I feel its way too overhyped where even the creator realised her mediocre story writing and building character personalities. Her having Brandon as co creator shows how she acknowledged it and even being inspired by his humour and skits. Sure, Huluva boss may not be at its peak, but the direction vizi is going for i have confidence the show will steadily improve to having two genius story directors. Even with saying this, i love hullava boss.
Helluva Boss and Smiling Friends have their edgy moments and gross humor, but they make up for it with good writing, well written characters, and unique designs that are complemented with good animation. Even South Park has its own charm to it even though I'm not a fan of it. Cartoons like Fairview is making a mockery of the animation business and people who actually care about their work. I'm not a great drawer or writer, but I at least give it my all instead of letting a board room of boomers horse everyone around like Comedy Central. eebee deebee
Honestly I just kind of avoid most adult animation at this point. Nowadays "childrens" cartoons seem to be able to touch on important topics in creative and subtle ways that appeal to a slightly older demographic. A show doesnt need a load of swearing and crass behavior to denote who its made for. Also you can have wonky character designs but depending on the general style the line between interestingly wonky and off-putting is just too thin. South Park may not animate walking but at least its still made clear that they have legs and dont look like wibble-wobbles.
You shouldn't avoid adult animation, a lot of it is amazing, I'd recommend some advice. If it looks remotely like family guy/the way family guy is animated, STAY AWAY
@@mechanomics2649 smiling friends, south park, inside job, the simpsons, rick and morty, king of the hill, aqua teen hunger force, bojack horseman, futurama, yolo: crystal fantasy just to name some, some I haven't watched yet but are highly regarded as good shows
Adult animation as well as animation in general may have evolved over the course of the decades, but it's still one of the greatest kinds of animation there is and ever will be!!!
Well, this whole thread went to shit quickly. I'd be more of a fan of adult animation if the TV networks would stop trying to copy the simpsons and family guy so much.
@Saberspark is funnier than ComedyCentrall! 2:44 "It's like they wanted to design characters that looked like the'ye from Archer, but then they gave up" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 We're done! 😭😭😭😭
Honestly, the thing I adore about Smiling Friends is how often it takes advantage of it being animated. Different styles, visual gags, etc. Fairview is just lazy and could be done irl.
they look like - they're made to sell fairview nfts - the higglytown heroes' bitmojis - they drew the heads and gave up - the character designers looked up "boring person" for inspiration - i ran out of roasts but man im just so ANGRY man
I wish 2d drawn by hand animation like treasure planet or spirit was still a go to thing. While it takes a lot longer you really see the differences when people put a lot of time and effort into something
King of the hill is probably one of the best adult swim show's I've seen, all the character's, especially Hank and Bobby, they are pretty well written, then you have these..things..jesus christ
@Quark State Atheism? How the fuck would that even work? Did you steal this idea from the weird Z-Men event that immediately predated the current “Krakoan Nation” stuff, The Age of X-Man?
You thought High Guardian Spice was bad, Fair View makes HGC look like an actually good show. HGC was made by inexperienced animators, working for the 1st time, who worked too much and got paid too little. Meanwhile, this must have had a bigger budget and weren’t overworked :/
Hgs had a vision, it probably wasn't very thought out and set in stone, a general idea. Protect nature. Masculine men can be mean, judgemental, and narrow minded. Lgbt people exist. Follow your dreams. Two girls are badass. Hgs screams "I want to create a magical adventure like harry potter, but more inclusive" And this just seems to have "adult animation comedy" as a theme, along with vague politics.
I feel bad for the animators and people who worked on HGS, people with a vision trying a project they were not experienced enough to fulfill, whose careers might take a big hit.
adult swim consistently tries new and experimental things with at least some of their shows, and even if the show looks weird or poorly animated, if something about it is truly different then it is at least very interesting. superjail! had so much stuff going on it felt like a moving where's waldo; king star king was over the top offensive but so weird you couldn't look away 12 oz mouse looks like it was drawn by a five year old but feels like a david lynch film shorts like this house has people in it, mulch town, opal. it is weird to the max, but never a cynical cash grab, and always true to what some weird artist wanted. even if not my cup of tea i am glad i can discover a something i wouldn't have dreamed could have been produced.
One of my all time favorites, Xavier Renegade Angel, looks like it was animated on a PS1, has writing that sounds like an improv troupe of philosophy majors dropping acid together, and gets so offensive at times that it makes South Park look like Sesame Street. By all accounts it shouldn't work. But it's one of the funniest things ever aired.
I mean not all experiments turn out the way you expect. But if even half of them work out that's good. The only way to succeed, I mean really succeed, is to be willing to take a risk. (A calculated one, if possible, but a risk.)
I want to just, take Fairview, make all the characters look like enemies from Kirby instead of half-assing human faces, and then just write everything to be lowkey instead of over the top. That would be infinitely better. Or at least less offensive to the senses.
The sort of person who would proudly advertise their comedy show as ‘hyper topical’ is one of the last people I would trust to do a good job with such a show.
When some people see and experience a tragedy, it inspires them to fight against it happening again, even if it is a futile endeavor. I was hit over the head with inspiration by this video, to at least make some form of adult media with a better story (not going to be hard), better animation (storyboard art is more refined than these shit-shows), and better sound mixing (I've heard better audio in found-footage) than what is flooding the media from these big corporations today.
Ah Bitmojis the TV show. You can always count on a show being the pits when it's ran by people who look down on the medium they work with and their audience *this* much. And that's the thing with people like apparently Colbert & the showrunner for Fairview. They create a self-fulfilling prophecy when they think "oh the dumbasses in the audience only want the lowest common denominator" so they just put out the lowest common denominator. But this time with a heaping truckload of obvious contempt born of cynicism for everything & everyone. The best thing about streaming is that maybe it will put "creators" (and I use that term *VERY* loosely here) like this out of business. As its far past time for people like this to retire and networks like this to go out business. In the meantime I'll be watching Arcane or any of the other shows you suggested here.
Go on Netflix and watch Arcane and Inside Job. Those are two really well done action cartoons. I mean Inside Job is a little raunchy but it’s a good bit of action too.

I love this series and I recommend that you watch, and maybe, review it
@Quark ok but who asked?
Wtf is with all these bots?
Agreed. And I get weird looks when I say family guy fell off a long time ago.
And don't forget to add Gore and laughing at the people who are agonizing Pain is part of that Comedy adult. Never understand why every Adult cartoon has to bring Gore to make it funny. It makes it disturbing.
Makes sense.

Fuck, I still remember the oldies like Boondocks, Tim and Eric, Robot Chicken, and many many shows that have been on adult swim at one point or another, family guy, South Park, american dad, the works!

i find it ironic how a common gotcha against critiquing childrens cartoons is "its just for kids, why are you asking for so much, its not that deep" when the adult cartoons serve us literal dirt. i dont think its unrealistic to expect the bare minimum of respect for the audience, regardless of age.
I don't get why they say that. Kids deserve quality, well written shows and movies. If they keep watching cheap, mediocre content, then they will grow up thinking cartoons are just for kids. That is what happened with people that grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

@Quark this bot just threatened to murder me….or at the very least said I should be murdered

They are supposed to be conservative stereotypes.
That’s not how self awareness works if that’s what they’re trying to achieve by doing that
And then Beef caught it anyway, started shedding (look it up), and killed his friend. *LAUGH TRACK*
It reminds me of the sterilized, corporate avatar creation for social media, like the "Metaverse" avatars.
@Quark dammit... stop
@Quark I'm not even religious and yet I am offended by your blatant ignorance.
That's because it's not.
My first thought was Miis. Yet somehow, Miis still have more life in them and more personality to their animations than Fairview seems to.

Smiling Friends is the Resident Evil 7 of adult animation. It's "fine".
kind of ironic how the whole "animation doesn't have to be good, it's for kids!" sentiment is when you realize lots of kids animation has WAY more effort and genuinely good stories/characters in comparison to adult animation.
Batman TAS and Avatar TLA come to mind right away.
Except stuff like Arcane alone blows the entirely of "kids shows" out of the water, in terms of being competent in how it handles it's maturity and complexity. Same with shows like Bojack and Primal

@@Stew91 Is Centaur World even an adult cartoon?
Isn't Aqua Teen's writing just basic outlines of what's going on in any given scene?
Archer started out as just a Spy Agency office comedy. Sounds about as derivative as you can get but the excellent voice cast and writing led to it being a critical and commercial success. The same can be said for why American Dad succeeded and The Cleveland Show failed.

Dude, at least Chargeman Ken can be amusing with how utterly bat insane it is!

I agree! I loved F is for Family

They just see it as something that could make the network tons of money as long as they check the right boxes
Creators like JG Quintel and Vivziepop actually had a passion for the art form, which is why their shows have become very successful and people see them as some of the best cartoonists of our time. Same thing with Seth MacFarlane. Regardless of how you feel about him, he put real passion into his craft and worked very hard to make his shows look great and funny. With so many of these shows, there’s clearly no hard work that was put into them. They think if they keep modeling themselves after Family Guy, they’re bound to score a hit, without really understanding what made Family Guy big to start with
TLDR; If you want a successful adult cartoon, try to create one through the lens of an artist, not a business owner
EDIT: Based on some of the replies, I’m gonna clarify myself
I do think business is an important aspect to creating a successful show. Good funding and good marketing are what help make your entertainment a hit. I think what I was trying to get at with this comment is that you should put the artistic aspect first and the business aspect second

The creator of Smiling Friends said in an interview exactly your point about the people who are making adult animation-- people who don't care. It's seen as a lazy project (in their view, not a bad thing) to get paid and it's thrown around like it requires no real talent.
i think it's because much of the higher ups in entertainment, are the same people who see animation as 'for kids', so their idea of an 'adult cartoon' is what you see here.
thats why that comedy central pr statement states the 'necessary' things in an adult cartoon like that because that is genuinely all they know. really violent, abhorrent humor, politics and a crude style because 'that's all adult animation is'
there is a shocking amount of people in a powerful position in entertainment that genuinely have that ignorant understanding of animation.

Okay.... despite my earlier comment about the quality of that show, I too will give it another look.

I just wanted to point out one small detail (cuz I ABSOLUTELY agree with your assessment of “Fairview”), and that is:
“Home Movies”, despite being a truly *fantastic* show that was way ahead of its time, is not a super great choice to include in a list of shows that are meant to exemplify _”great writing.”_ (seeing as its most defining gimmick was: dialogue in which the voice actors were given a fu¢kton of freedom to ad-lib in their performances)
The amount of humor, emotional depth, and overall writing of Helluva Boss is OUTSTANDING for just a UA-cam channel, heck, even if it was on TV, I'd still be pleasantly surprised that good animation was being made for anyone above 10
Hell yeah
That show would fit perfect or Adult Swim tbh
There are only two things I remember Comedy Central for.
South Park and The Office reruns.
That’s it. Thats all I need.
They got Seinfeld now too.
They were the shit in 2004 with the Chappelle Show and Daily Show on at night!
God I feel old that someone born then is already starting college....
What about Futurama?
I also liked the Colbert Report from way before Fairview happened
I miss the comedy specials that used to be played on weekends.
Bluey is a good example of a “kids show” that actually appeals to all ages
@@CartoDarko So then give specific examples.

Fairview is just lazy and could be done irl.
Fairview probably would’ve done better if it was live action (but not much better to be sure).
I love the little gag during the pilot where Pim's hair grows longer for a split second and Charlie notices but isn't sure if it really happened
Any adult animation that could easily be done live action shouldn't even exist.

@Quark State Atheism? How the fuck would that even work? Did you steal this idea from the weird Z-Men event that immediately predated the current “Krakoan Nation” stuff, The Age of X-Man?
@Quark cringe, repent sinner.
Gotta give credit when credit is due, at least HGS had characters with legs, and that's hilariously the bare minimun standard now

High Guardian Spice is pretty mid, but the so-called "reviews" aren't any better either.

adult swim consistently tries new and experimental things with at least some of their shows, and even if the show looks weird or poorly animated, if something about it is truly different then it is at least very interesting.

One of my all time favorites, Xavier Renegade Angel, looks like it was animated on a PS1, has writing that sounds like an improv troupe of philosophy majors dropping acid together, and gets so offensive at times that it makes South Park look like Sesame Street. 2:07 Where are their LEGS and FEET?! The animators forgot to draw them on the characters!
I sincerely wish you good luck
