    This country is founded based on meritocracy, not mediocrity. The focus should be giving MORE support to minorities rather than taking the opportunity AWAY from the majority. U.S public school's rating has been consistently falling over the years and now this? This is why Bill De Blasio was the worst mayor of NY at all time.

    Most Asian kids in the gifted and talented are from families where English is second language. The tests are usually given in English and consists of English as well as math. How do first generation Asians grasp the English language better than most Americans? Hard work, work ethic, strong families and lots of intelligence. God forbid you have adequate students.

My mother can't do some simple Math like dividing ( for example 246 divided by 37) or if you tell her to turn right, she will turn left because her brain is not cut out for logic and numbers but she can sew a dress, cook a fancy meal without a recipe ,(using just her memory). And her friends include many professionals and successful women. So If the exclusion system you defend was in place, she would never had the chance to befriend people who were more academically advantaged. She worked as a clerk to a judge, went to college when she was in her 50s and now is retired doing what she loves the most, which is taking care of her family. So separating the problem who consider themselves superior is elitist, racist and a recreation of the caste system.

    I don't think it's fair that there's not enough Asians in professional sports. The process of choosing the athletes is flawed. Let's just scrap the process, it just harms and segregates Asian athletes. I have a great idea... we should create a quota to create more equality! A certain percentage of Asian athletes must be accepted every year, regardless of skill. Personality matters too! not just test scores! just like getting accepted to Harvard!

    As a gifted kid, there was definitely plenty of discrimination. The teachers were able to choose who got in if they passed the test. So like i passed the test and got in, but there were minorities who also passed the test and didn’t get in bc the teachers could choose. Also, intelligence and giftedness are not really real. Intelligence comes in so many shapes and forms, and basing it off of an iq test is pretty stupid.

      @Jokaanan 2 роки тому +2

      Actually, eliminating the program will be a boost for gifted students' future success. Gifted & talented programs tend to not work (which is a less publicized reason why the program is being eliminated). The labeling and praise based on fixed-trait comparison to others can turn kids into insecure incompetent narcissists. All kids need to learn the same universal lessons of hard work & perseverance, to take life one day at a time, to find calm through communal belonging instead of constantly scrambling to maintain a sense of specialness. These are the hardest lessons to learn, especially nowadays, and gifted students have been deprived of them.

    ****I just turned 69, entering 1st grade in 1958. We were all white, so there was no such thing as "racial segregation". Fairly early on in the 1st grade, it was determined - by the teachers, I guess - who was learning to read faster and who were lagging behind. We were then divided into 3 groups. For example: the red birds, the blue birds and the yellow birds. It also became apparent who was progressing the fastest and on which chapter - out of the same reader - that each group was reading. For example, the red birds may be on chapter 6, while the blue birds were still on chapter 5, while the yellow birds were still on chapter 4. It didn't take the kids very long to figure out who were perceived to be the smartest. That way, the smartest kids could reach a higher potential faster. It can be compared to what's going on here, only now RACE figures into it. If it turns out the ones selected for the gifted category tend to be almost all white or Asian, so what? Let them reach their fullest potential and not hold them back so as to share the same struggles with the blacks and Hispanics. I know that sounds - guess what - the dreaded RACIST word! This very thing was partly behind racial segregation of the entire school system years ago.

    The truth is intelligence is subjective and can not be accurately measured! You can't really call these gifted or talented kids; gift or exceptional unless they invent something. Getting the highest marks or grades on an exam or assignments mean nothing.... because many might study their butts off or could even cheat and or have the teacher booklet exams.
    Reminds me of back in college, there was one student who got the highest grades in physics class and scored perfect on all assignments; while people were worshipping him and saying he was brilliant... truth be told.. he took the class 3 times and already had all answers to assignments,quizzes, and exams because the professor reused the same academic packet such as exams, assignments and quizzes every single semester. So my point is... don't be fooled by so called booksmarts or that booksmart people are gift or exceptional. This is just all BS that is fed to us. The real problem with these so called gifted and talented programs are they mainly just reserved for rich and privleged people just like ivy-leagues This is more of a class issue and 100% support by commending, applauding and backing NYC for shutting down these gifted and talented programs.
