Dumb Decisions: The SILLIEST Fourth Down Call Ever
Вставка

- In a 1992 game between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets, head coach Bruce Coslet decided to call a run to Blair Thomas on 4th and 6. To the surprise of no one, it did not work. This is the story behind that.

Great moments in New York Jets history:
1a. 1969: Joe Willie Namath guarantees a Super Bowl III win over the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts.
1b. 1992: Bruce Coslet guarantees a win over the loaded San Francisco 49ers.
2a. Namath plays well, wins game and Super Bowl MVP.
2b. Coslet calls a run on 4th and 6.
3a. Namath points arm upward when leaving field, index finger extended.
3b. Coslet leaves field following game, fans extend a different finger towards him.
The 49ers were also coming off the famous No Punt game vs Buffalo so they were definitely not gonna be caught napping
I like how the Jets fans booed their asses after that asinine call
Coslet earned his team those boos. No wonder he wasn't a successful head coach!
You're more reliable than my dad, keep the content coming my guy!
"And then, the Jets had a great defensive gameplan, that involved just not covering him at all."
Hey, I've seen that before! I think that's also the same gameplan that the Chargers had in Super Bowl XXIX!
EDIT: On a separate note, as we close in on the Draft, if you're open to it, you should do a special episode of this for a dumb draft decision. Regardless, love the series.
Thanks. Definitely trying to work on a draft series regarding picks that were universally panned at the time, but it probably won’t come out for another month or so
@@OfficialJaguarGator9 Good morning sir. I was wondering if will you be making as well posting Marshall Faulk, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Sterling Sharpe, James Lofton, Warren Moon, Priest Holmes, Dan Marino, the Marks Brothers (Clayton & Duper), Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Daunte Culpepper, Matthew Stafford, Herman Moore, Calvin "Megatron" Johnson, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, John (JJ) Jefferson, Wes Chandler, Kellen Winslow Sr., Chuck Muncie, James Brooks, Andre Reed, Thurman Thomas, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, Ricky Watters, Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Henry Ellard, Willie "Flipper" Anderson, Drew Hill, Ernest Givens, Haywood Jeffries, Tony Dorsett, Eric Dickerson, & Bo Jackson touchdown highlights or overall career highlight videos in the upcoming future at your earliest convenience of course?
Love your take on these videos.
Okay. I don't mind the *decision* to go for it on 4th down there. You're the underdog, you have the ball at the 25, if you convert you'll be in the red zone with a good chance to tie the score. May as well be aggressive.
Now, the *play* they chose, on the other hand... THAT was indefensible.
Is that a banjo version of “Staying Alive” by The Bee Gees playing as the soundtrack to this?
I forgot Sunday Night Football on TNT ...
I can see if Coslet called that HB counter if it was 4th down & 2. On 4th & 6, though?! He would've been better off bringing Jason Staurovsky out to take the points.
But Staurovsky couldn’t really kick his way out of a wet paper bag…
@@chrisp679 Trotting him out there would've still been better than running a counter at that point, though.
I remember Bruce Coslet ran a similar play in 1997 when he was the Bengals coach; that may've been a 4th-and-18 or something wild like that (not sure about the opponent).
It was the Jaguars, and then he tried to pass it off on Eric Bieniemy (which is of course the reason EB can't get hired as a head coach today😂😂😂😂)
If you look at the play, they pulled both the RG and RT- DeWayne White and Irv Eatman. Eatman got a decent block, but White totally missed the defender coming off the corner!! Yes, it was a dumb decision to run the ball. It was made worse, by terrible execution by the OL!
I can maybe see a draw, but a simple counter is simply stupid.
Even John Madden said in one of the Madden video game commercials, "Don't do stupid things."
The Jets' game plan in this game looked like Dan Devine's play book. But at least Dan Devine could somewhat be defended by the fact that he had who should have been 1 of the best running backs of his time (if not for horrible play calling) in John Brockington, and another star back in MacArthur Lsne
Was this the worst call you’ve ever seen on 4th down? Leave your thoughts down below
Not NFL, but Penn State's 4th & 5 call against Ohio State in 2018 was as bad or worse than this, especially since this came in the 1st quarter and that running play was with the game on the line coming out of a timeout.
You clearly forgot about the draw on 4th and 9
@@BoltTheEmolga Don't worry. I haven't forgotten about Freddie Kitchens.
That's definitely coming up in a future episode
Official JaguarGator9 Alright. Only thought that because you said that the run on 4th and 6 was the “worst call”, when there was a run on a worse-drawn (pun not intended) play for a longer distance.
Maybe a top 10 worst Kitchens moments? As a Browns fan it’d be great to show off just how set back we were by coaching.
@@BoltTheEmolga Probably gonna make 2 videos on Kitchens just based on 2019 alone. That 4th and 11/4th and 16 play against New England was a special kind of bad
How many old games do you watch in their entirety @JaguarGator9?
Way too many
It’s the Jets. What in the fuck do you expect?
What about Ray Rice 4th and 29?
Not many things the Jets did in the 90s made sense until Bill Parcells arrived.
We learned not to hire Bruce coslett
...and don't expect the Jets not to play like the Jets.
1:02 😂
You know you could probably make a lot of videos featuring Coslet. Not that he would be happy about it.
QB O'Brien telegraphed that it was going to be a run.
It’s okay you counted the ref as a player. Knowing the Jets there was a damn good chance the RB would run into him anyway.
It seems to me that boasting before a game almost always ends in disaster. Whether you're a coach or a player, you should probably just keep your damned mouth shut lest you build a fire under the opponent's ass.
The poor jet fans....I see them suffer year in & year out!
This decision was clearly awful from the start.
Cowboy vs the eagles was the dumbest 4th down
Jets so typical lose lose lose
