Barry Andrews was the background color of XTC. He has a unique style and sound. I'm still very admirative of his ''free style'' and well thought dissonances.
Yes, but Terry Chambers was the heart of the band, such an under-rated drummer. After leaving he joined Kiwi band Dragon for a while, he drives this song - ua-cam.com/video/jM7RcgZ1pLE/v-deo.html

I didn't know this existed. What a great performance. Thank you MrHb! I actually think that the album "White Music" was a major influence on British music and other bands and artists coming out of the punk era and showed a path with musical dissonance that was intentional and not just a result of ignorance. I hear the influence in Kate Bush and the 80's New Romantics at the time but also with Primus (Les Claypool) and even Nirvana. XTC are perhaps the most underrated band I've ever heard.
One of the most unique bands of this time. I loved them then and still do. There is nothing quite like Xtc. I saw them live in Toronto in 1981. I will never forget.
Saw XTC at UCD Belfield, with D.C.Nien supporting, at the start of the Drums and Wires tour. Invited backstage after for a beer and a chat. Lovely blokes. Lucky me!
Terry’s drumming really is something else. The band as a whole are really tight as well. Set Myself On Fire is far better live than on the album, and it was great then. Thanks for uploading this!
I saw this here in New Zealand when it was first available for broadcast. I've been waiting for this to appear on UA-cam for a loooong time, so thanks for posting!
Well done on the great sounding audio! It's surprisingly better than the quality of the video! I'm more of a fan of the years with Dave on guitar, but this is a great window into the bands early days of performing with Andy handling all the guitar parts! Thanks for uploading this!❤
Great to see this in full, and I send you my thanks. I used to do a few checks of UA-cam each year for this, but I hadn't searched for it in a long time. I even used to search all those video sites you only hear of when the BBC tells us a new HateHateHate report wants them all shut down as someone with three viewers on Bitrubbish has disagreed with them!
So sad I didnt get to see these guys live. I had a chance to see them open for Police in Toronto and didnt. #fail . And can we talk about how amazing their cover of Watchtower is, both live and on LP ?
XTC were never PUNK . You are witnessing the birth of NEW WAVE ! Skylarking is the perfect introduction album to XTC, but 2nd to the masterpiece that is English Settelment! Easily they're best.
They are one of the most intelligent bands of all time. Deceptively stupid while being high concept and minimalistic. It’s a great example of absurdism and spontaneity.
@unikadas I looked into it. It's a real group, a nice reggae band. Plenty of material on youtube. It looks like they had some real success and hits as several of the videos have millions of views. Even a couple with 10 million. "Nuclear" is a strange word to describe their sound, though, it's pretty mellow as reggae usually is
Their best phase. Spikey artrock with melodies and hooks. Went wrong when Barry left and I had another 'Gabriel' moment. Some of that later pastural stuff was so arch, word-clunky and politically naff compared to this
This is an early batch of songs from their first album, and their extensive catalog varies in many different musical styles, but you have formed your opinion from one of the bands earliest recorded performances. Like most artists, XTC matures as a band throughout their 20 year period, and I urge you to at least listen to more of the material before coming to your cynical conclusion. For the record, I'm a bit of a cynic myself, but only cynical of lame comment trolls.😂
@@sevchyk I would suggest any of the songs from the album Skylarking (1986)... it's pretty much regarded as their best work (also my personal favorite). It's the album that contains the song "Dear God" one of their best songs (and most controversial). It's a great album all the way through! I apologize for such a harsh reply calling you a troll. To be honest the band XTC is very underrated, and always seemed to be writing unpopular pop songs that deserved more success. The sound of their music changed, and matured through the years from these early days.

@@chrisarmstrong8210 I tried to listen to “Dear God”. The beginning was intriguing and the first verse also, but then they made not good move musically at 1:30, which, in my opinion, made the song aimlessly boring. I enjoyed “King for a Day” more, what other commenter wrote.

Polished, powerful, tight, innovative, style - and my favourite band of all time.
Lucky to see them live in Albany NY back in the 90's and then meet them backstage later - friend got his album signed.
@@mrdnarna Such a long time ago. I was at school and only heard Nigel. It took me another 40 years to delve into them, but better late than never.
I just discovered them. Definitely fucked my world up.
Wonderful!!❤
In my pantheon. There's only room for five.
Set myself on fire is a revelation. Way beyond the recorded version. Wow. Takes me back. I’m old enough to have actually seen them twice.
Good god, Terry Chambers is a beast back there on the drums.

Just brilliant! Wish I'd seen them live! So tight, harmonies are great! Who else could write a song like Neon Shuffle?
Thanks from Japan❤
So glad this exists. Incredible band. Super tight live. Set Myself on Fire is loads better than the album version.
Agree
I had a c90 of this at the time..recorded from either a radio broadcast ot the Tv..loved it.

Thank you for posting this. I has a cassette tape of the show that I recorded off the radio at the time..always loved the set.
Possibly the best band from the new wave...more like tidal wave
Great guitar solo on "Dance Band " - pure jazz-punk.
God Bless you for posting this. If you have any other early XTC shows please upload them!
Yes a lot to get through, keep looking.
Awesome track and band. So under rated.

XTC FOREVER
Their last gig was 7 years before my first unfortunately (for me)😢
Brilliant. Just after my 16th birthday!
Thank you thank you.
a band that made you think you were slow on the uptake

awesome!
They are the best..
Stating the obvious but - How young do they look?!! Great to see footage with Barry Andrews too.
👍
This is so fockin' cool!!
Back when Barry Andrews (later of The League of Gentleman and Shriekback) was a member of XTC.
Loved them when trippin

This audio is from the Transistor Blast box set they released years ago, did your friend work on that?
That was an excellent release, I lost my digital copy and sold the beautiful CDs, but it's a treasure so I knew it would reappear
Did you find someone who'd recorded this performanc off the stereo simulcast broadcast on BBC Radio 1 VHF?
Original broadcast (never been re-broadcasted in full) audio been remixed
In this comment section someone says he did record the radio broadcast on tape....
Whats the nuclear reggae aound of steel pulse? Not familiar with that band
Sometimes this character must have just been making up bands as part of his radio schtick
