Shit - Barry Andrews was absolutely brilliant in the line-up. Incredible video, a band at the peak of their creative powers. And there were others to follow!
ANAZING1 THANKS FOR POSTING! Never seen this! I fell in love with "I am The Audience " all over again! .in, The dissonant modernist tonality of the fadeout. Andy hitting ONE note! Bad Ass! Im starting to be convinced that this is the coolest band that ever existed. What I see here, is no matter what wild genius Andy is, Colin always had the same confidence to match Andy's. Albeit a calmer confidence in himself, what he can deliver as a musician and songwriter. And this was a perfect match or tension that ultimately makes XTC!
Good Lord, "Are You Receiving Me," "Supertuff," AND "I Am the Audience"? Astounding! XTC fans owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to the good folks who put this up! Also worth noting--even at this young stage, they were showcasing three songwriters/ vocalists in one band--kind of like another band from a rough-n-tumble English city far outside of London that we all know...
In Go2 you can kind of hear Colin coming into his own as a songwriter. I feel in White Music he was almost trying to fit in with Andy's craziness. I Am The Audience is a very Colin song.
Each song here is a live vocal with album music. 0:00 "Are You Receiving Me?" (Has a whistling solo instead of a guitar solo; Andy's song) 3:04 "Super Tuff" (Barry's song) 7:31 "I Am the Audience" (Colin's song) Oh hey, the songs went from Andy to Barry to Colin. ABC. Dave showed up later, so they're ABCD. Counting Terry, because he played an instrument without strings, they're ABCD T. I'm kidding, don't take it too seriously. There are also clips from this video session of them playing "Battery Brides" and "The Rhythm" and they're uploaded to UA-cam too.
I've loved xtc for years and I've only just discovered this footage. It's like clearing out your cupboards and finding an amazing xmas present you didn't know was there. Wonderful
Vunderful Good fun! Especially Barry Andrew's.featured Super Tuff. Had vinyl as a young man. Before the internet it was hard to learn much about your music heroes on the other side of the pond. Colin Moulding super underrated bass guitarist!
Hey Hey I shared this on Twitter and got a heads up about the source of the performance. What was said: "It's not Viewpoint. This was done in Bristol for HTV tv channel.Live vocals over track recorded the day before." Wherever it transpired, I think it's brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing!
What genre of music is this? It's a genre known as XTC. As yet only one band ever belonged to this genre and they happend to be called XTC. There's no one else like them. They never made a bad album in their entire career IMO. Not many bands can make that claim.
2:12 I thought Andy said they couldn't whistle. I guess he was improvising for this performance and when he more or less said "We couldn't whistle" he meant "We couldn't whistle (the whistling part in Generals & Majors) so we got a keyboard for the live performances."
I love seeing young Andy "Sir John John" and this pop\ new wave with a dash of punk attitude and performance. This is rare with Barry taking over I love GO2," He's a Supertuff" Intellectual band for a Intellectual audience
My fav album,Andy looks so young and Beautiful .All Barry had to do is come up with punk clothes. Wear a Scottish Mac. And go crazy live then being fired. 🗽🗽🗽🗽🗽🗿 Statue of Liberty💰💰💰
This is a live vocal on top of recorded music, but; the guitar and keyboards are a bit more flushed out than on the album, the bass is quieter and the guitar solo isn't in this one. Kind of interesting, I find. I'd like it released on CD as-is, I'd listen to it.
Barry Andrews Excellent piano\ keyboards no one cared all they focused on is how bald he was and didn't dress punkish or new wave he should have come up with a more attractive image
really? He looks pretty punkish new-wavey to me. Having been 18 then I'd say Barry's tees & tight grey jeans were pretty much standard issue for someone in a band around then. That black & white striped shirt my boy Colin wears a lot was also pretty "classic new wave". It doesn't really matter what Andy wears he's so magnetic & the drummer Terry was actually the hottest one of them all who never gets seen!
Culturally speaking, pop music and aesthetic styling have always gone hand in hand with each other. However, judging XTC’s sense of style only matters if fashion becomes more important than the music. In this particular clip, Barry is dressed like ‘the man on the street’ as are his band mates. Who shall we compare him to? John Lydon? Ziggy Stardust? Must everything be pigeonholed? Incidentally, and unfortunately for Barry’s head, minoxidil was still undergoing trials for hair loss prevention in the late seventies and Barry wearing a wig would look ridiculous. The Undertones got ribbed for the clothes that they used to wear when the public first became aware of them. Ah yes, that green parka that Fergal wore on The Old Grey Whistle Test; the perennial hand-me-down favourite garment of a certain generation. I think those that focused on aesthetics were still in love with the looks that came from the punk and glam rock movements.
+XxzoundsxX I don't know if it's true or not, someone on UA-cam said he was at an XTC concert while Barry was in the band and someone poured a pint of beer in Barry's boot...
Interesting that they used some tracks directly from the album tapes. The drums aren't live, some of the keyboards aren't either. Looks like possibly some of the guitar is, and obviously the vocals. I suspect the bass is from the multitrack as well. Maybe they didn't have enough microphones!
It's always a wonderful moment when you discover a really old video of XTC that you've never seen before. Go 2 era - class.
Shit - Barry Andrews was absolutely brilliant in the line-up. Incredible video, a band at the peak of their creative powers. And there were others to follow!
So fantastic to see my idol laying down the baddest assest bassline on Super Tuff. such an unassuming babyfaced doll- yet there it is. EPIC.
I can’t find any bass tabs for super-tuff anywhere

XTC Est un Groupe Fantastique Et Philosophique Dans La Créativité. ❤

It's not even HTV! It was for BBC East.
I did not know there was a performance of "Super Tuff" like this until today!!
That's how they looked when I saw them at West Runton Pavilion in Feb 1978. I still love 'em!

This is Pop ❤

Great upload, this is my favourite XTC period.

I love Go2 more than is probably normal or healthy. And that sick bassline on Super Tuff gives me LIFE.
Excellent! They never disappoint me.
Happy birthday, Terry Chambers - oh, and thanks for sharing this fine clip ;-)
Absolutely incredible! Many thanks for this.
Fantastic, never saw this. Many thanks.

Holy shite! I never knew this existed!
On top of every other talented thing that Andy Partridge regails us with..he also WHISTLES on command! oh try it you'll see. THESE GUYS!
Fuck i love this band....
Love this. Early XTC was like if PIL could play their instruments and tried to make good music.
Never seen this before, cheers for posting, excellent.
3 of the earlier tunes that I actually liked. And I'd never seen this video until Sept 2018!!
Superb footage. Thanks for sharing it!
Genius. I have never seen this! Wow! Appears to be live.
Vocals were live over recorded track.

Ah, The real music lives.

Timeless music from the great band xtc

So ahead of their time! Go2 their best work!
Still modern stuff, even the set up as simple as it was, timeless...
Great, love this!
my vote for best song
Fantastic.
GREAT! SUPERB! XTC RULEZ.
Great !!
Andy preferred to Barry on vocals
Great live vocals over the original backing track but our Terry Chambers doesn't do mime drums does he ?? lol
Swindon's only claim to fame, besides that roundabout.
And Diana Fluck. aka Dors.
Wow
After all these years I find out that it’s Barry singing. I always thought the voice sounded unlike Andy or Colin and now I know why.
barry andrews is a big foot tapper haha at least he keeps good time
+XxzoundsxX I don't know if it's true or not, someone on UA-cam said he was at an XTC concert while Barry was in the band and someone poured a pint of beer in Barry's boot...
i think they also did battery brides and the rhythm here
My god there so young
So cool
like iodine in my brain
ALA QUE JOVEN ESE CSV
Xtc were so tribal sounding...right up to english settlement
Interesting that they used some tracks directly from the album tapes. The drums aren't live, some of the keyboards aren't either. Looks like possibly some of the guitar is, and obviously the vocals. I suspect the bass is from the multitrack as well. Maybe they didn't have enough microphones!
polite applause excepted
I never could work out that line, thanks!
I don't know why Barry slanted his keyboard like that.
Live old XTC ….NEVER seen before….cool
