GAF which is on 1 out of every 3 homes in America Got Cheap and replaced the copper in the shingle with Limestone. The result especially in the south was a feeding ground for Algae. Most roofs in the south have heavy algae after 5 years from being installed. GAF should be sued in my opinion. They caused a big problem for there customers. Algae is damaging there roof and its not the consumers fault. Its GAF. The are a few draw backs of this product. looks, the cost to install it and the fact GAF had no choice in order to safe face but to put copper back in there shingles as of a few months ago. So now all HDZ have the same algae resistant's as the Timberline Ultra shingle did. So must new shingles going forward from most brands will not have the issues of algae like shingles did in the past.

Interesting observation! GAF is install on most homes in the Chicago market as well. However, I don't see this problem in our market. I've been installing them for 10 years and have had virtually no call backs for blow offs, algae, or any defects. Now with the new technology in the Timberline HDZ, I feel it's the best technology packed into a roofing shingle and am confident installing this brand for our homeowners peace of mind.
The new mechanical fastener, the monolithic bond, coupled with the strong bonding adhesive is reassuring that we won't have any crazy service calls each time a storm blows through.

@@ChicagoRoofer 15 years . 5000 gaf roofs under my belt.
You don’t have algae like we do in the south. It is more of a regional issue. South East.
There shingles are much thinner then 20 years ago.
They don’t hold up well over time in the southern heat and severe storms . Blow offs are not the issue . They suffer higher granule loss in our region compared to other top brands.
Also they damage very easily even from the smallest impact of hail or nuts from a tree above .
Proof is we replaced 20 plus gaf roofs with hail damage all approved by the insurance companies . Same neighborhood they switched to CertainTeed about half way through building the neighborhood .
Not even one of the CertainTeed roofs had any damage. . Not even a blister or mark.
I found out because I knocking the entire neighborhood.
I got a roof approved gaf and was referred to the neighbor CertainTeed with no damage. .
So I stopped knocking in that neighborhood unless it was a. Gaf roof . I inspected 10 roofs with the CertainTeed and not one had damage. .
In the Midwest shingles perform very well overall and the last longer than they do in the south.

Your experience was not one round want our expect. I'm serious about the GAF Timberline roofing shingles being the best.
