I've been listening to this album non stop since rediscovering it online. I lost the vinyl 20 years ago. It''s one if the best in the soundtrack of my life.

I was lucky to find this LP at a jumble sale when I was younger. Picked up a selection of Gospel and rock for 5p an album. I love this so much and it is my favourite LP. Then on my first Christmas Day with my boyfriend (husband)in the 80s we were due at work at 7.00 am we had the tv on and lo and behold it was on tv. I was so excited. My boyfriend grew to love it too.

I had the privilege of working on this album with the legendary live recording master Dave Hewitt of Remote Recording Srv. was an amazing record to be involved with I still enjoy it

Thanks. So you and Hewitt were engineering on this recording? There's no engineering credit on the album cover. In fact there's little information at all. Can you tell me where and when this was recorded? Was it recorded during a public performance? I wonder who has the masters. This should be re-issued.

@@tommiron6762 it wasn't recorded during the public performance. The live version has a different album cover...I wish that you uploaded these track separately.

The cover is a reproduction of the enormous backdrop that was employed for the premier of the original production at the Brooklyn Academy. The original painting was done on a 4 x 7-foot masonite panel by the astronomical artist Adolf Schaller and Alison Yerxa, who also served as the production's set designer. It was enlarged onto a 30 x 70-foot canvas prepared at the Paramount Film Studio lot in Los Angeles, rolled up like a carpet and sent by rail to Brooklyn. Its appearance as the stage backdrop for Gospel at Colonus production in combination with the fantastic colors of the cast wardrobe was greeted with great acclaim by the cast members and all who attended those original performances. The visual impact together with the music was described as "a feast of color that induced a powerful sensation of floating into the sky."

Ok - my favorite song and performance in the universe ever! 43 years ago, I had the LP version and have been searching for it since. Every version of this treasure of a song I did manage to find, just wasn't, forgive me, quite it. THIS is "THE ONE"- the performance that I fell head over soul over so many years ago and recognized, like a mother's voice, the second I heard it. The whole album is amazing, this song of course being the sun around which all things orbit. All the love to everyone involved in its making - beyond that, words are insufficient. Thank you, Tom for posting. PS ...and uh, young Morgan Freeman in cast?!

Thanks for the comment. You prompted a search for this LP. Which I haven't done for a while. I do see some for sale on eBay, etc. Also had to listen again. Yup this is THE ONE.

This was a great stage play production. I watched it on PBS back in 84 or 85, and I know a lot of the quartet singers who participated. Unfortunately, some have passed on. But, one thing I have never heard anyone mention was that the gentleman who played Creon in the television stageplay was Robert Earl Jones, who was the father of James Earl Jones. Of course, even if you did not know that, I am sure you would notice the vocal similarity.

This recording is how I first heard this score. It became my Sunday morning service. I think it has an energy that is lacking in the Broadway cast recording. THANK YOU for posting it!

This studio version is VERY RARE, usually you'll only be able to find the live version on CD/Vinyl

Thank you for posting this version. Saw it at the Guthrie Theater. I bought the cassette (didn't have a CD player). Wore the cassette out. Wish I had the vinyl recording. Grew up on vinyl and reel-to-reel tape. Which explains why I didn't have a CD player when they were the shzz. Love hearing the vinyl crackle. 💜🙌

Skylight Musical Theater is staging this in January 2020, and I can't wait! I almost wore this vinyl album out years ago. I expect it's going to feel a little different to almost 60-year-old me than it did in my 20s, I think I better bring some tissues
